NEW YORK — Roberto Perez Jersey , the Nationals appeared ready to reward the faith of the upper management figures who resisted the urge to tear down the perennial National League East champions. But a little more than three weeks later, it’s becoming clearer by the day the Nationals will end the season closer to the Mets than the playoffs. Two teams getting ready to play out the string will square off Friday, when the Nationals visit the Mets in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field. Washington’s Gio Gonzalez (7-10, 4.51 ERA) is scheduled to oppose New York’s Jason Vargas (3-8, 7.67) in a battle of left-handers.Article continues below ...Both clubs lost highly anticipated pitcher’s duels Thursday.Nationals ace Max Scherzer was the losing pitcher as the Nationals fell to Aaron Nola and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.Jacob deGrom, pitching for the host Mets, absorbed another hard-luck defeat when San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner picked up the win by allowing five hits in eight innings of the Giants’ 3-1 victory.Scherzer and deGrom pitching Thursday robbed the series of its one potential bit of intrigue. Scherzer, the two-time defending NL Cy Young Award winner, is locked in an entertaining duel for the trophy this season with deGrom and Nola. Scherzer leads the Senior Circuit in wins (16), strikeouts (244) and WHIP (0.89). DeGrom leads the majors with a 1.71 ERA and is second in the NL in strikeouts (214) and WHIP (0.97). Scherzer and Nola are tied for second in the NL in ERA at 2.13 and Nola ranks second in wins (15) and fourth in strikeouts (169).DeGrom’s pursuit of the Cy Young has long been the main motivating factor for the Mets (56-71), who fell out of playoff contention by going 5-21 in June.“Our playoff hopes are not great because of where we are in the standings Eddie Robinson Jersey , but I feel like everybody’s trying to go out there and win games,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Thursday morning. “They obviously know that Jacob’s in the run that he’s in and it’s going to be a good (race). I think that motivates guys to a certain degree because of that.”The Nationals (64-64) looked like they might have more to play for than individual accolades when they throttled the Mets 25-4 on July 31, just hours after general manager Mike Rizzo declined to trade impending free agent stars such as Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy despite Washington entering the trade deadline at 52-53.A 5-3 win over the Mets the next day pulled the Nationals within five games of a playoff spot, but the momentum proved to be short-lived. Washington, which won the NL East in four of the previous six seasons, has gone 10-11 since Aug. 2 to fall 6 1/2 games behind in the race for the NL’s second wild card and eight games out of first place in the division.Scherzer will never acknowledge his Cy Young candidacy is the biggest remaining objective for the Nationals, but Rizzo began to wave the white flag Tuesday, when he traded Murphy to the Chicago Cubs and allowed the St. Louis Cardinals to claim first baseman Matt Adams.“Just go 1-0 every single day,” Scherzer told reporters Thursday afternoon.Gonzalez took the loss in his most recent start Sunday, when he allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 innings as the Nationals fell to the Miami Marlins 12-1. Vargas picked up the win Sunday, when he gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings as the Mets beat the Phillies 8-2 in the Little League Classic in Williamsport , Pa.Gonzalez is 15-5 with a 2.90 ERA in 25 career starts against the Mets, including 11-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 16 starts at Citi Field. Vargas is 0-3 with a 1.15 ERA in five career games (two starts) against the Nationals. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In a story Aug. 17 about the first game of a doubleheader between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the Mets broke a franchise record for runs set on Aug. 16, 2017, during their 24-4 win over the Phillies. The Mets’ previous record for runs of 23 was set on Aug. 16, 1987, against Chicago Cubs.A corrected version of the story is below:Hoskins homers again, Phillies beat Mets 9-6 to earn splitRhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer, Scott Kingery had a solo shot and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 9-6 to earn a doubleheader spitBy ROB MAADDIAP Sports WriterPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins erased an ugly start with one big swing.Hoskins hit a three-run homer, Scott Kingery had a solo shot and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 9-6 on Thursday night to split their doubleheader. In the first game, Jose Bautista hit a grand slam and had a career-high seven RBIs as the Mets set a franchise record for runs Mike Napoli Jersey , prompting the Phillies to use two position players to pitch the final three innings of a 24-4 rout.Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler defended the decision to use Roman Quinn and Kingery on the mound in the opener and took plenty of heat from fans and media on social media. His players backed him up.“You trust Gabe,” Hoskins said. “It’s worked. We don’t see any madness in his method.”The Phillies moved within 1½ games of NL East-leading Atlanta. The Mets began the nightcap with three straight doubles on Zach Eflin’s first four pitches. Michael Conforto’s two-run double made it 2-0.But then Hoskins crushed one high off the foul pole to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the bottom half against Steven Matz (5-10), just activated from the disabled list. Hoskins, who went deep in both ends of the twinbill, has 11 of his 25 homers since the All-Star break — and three in the last four games.“Rhys set the tone,” Kapler said. “We’re not down for long. We can take a punch and come out swinging.”The Phillies added three runs in the second. Kingery homered, Wilson Ramos had an RBI single and Cesar Hernandez swiped home on a double steal.Eflin (9-4) gave up four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Seranthony Dominguez got the last two outs.“I was in a funk the whole night and didn’t have my best command, but my slider saved me,” Eflin said.In the opener, Corey Oswalt (2-2) allowed four solo homers in six innings, Amed Rosario hit a leadoff homer and had three RBIs and the Mets took advantage of four errors to score 11 unearned runs.Even reliever Jerry Blevins got his first career hit Carlos Baerga Jersey , a line-drive RBI single off Kingery.“There’s nothing better,” Blevins said. “It’s something you dream about as a kid. When I tell the story, I’ll say I turned around a 95 (mph fastball). It’s pretty awesome.”The Mets scored more than 15 runs in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history. They beat Baltimore 16-5 Wednesday night.Hoskins, Maikel Franco, Nick Williams and Jorge Alfaro went deep for the Phillies.Quinn, the team’s fourth outfielder, gave up a homer to Conforto on his second pitch — a 79 mph fastball. Quinn got five outs, gave up seven runs and threw 42 pitches. Kingery went the final 1 1/3 innings and allowed two runs.Mets right fielder Brandon Nimmo left the game after injuring his left index finger hitting a grounder to third base with two outs and the bases loaded in the third. Nimmo fell to the ground as the ball rolled to Franco, who was late tagging third but threw to first to easily get the out.X-rays on Nimmo’s finger were negative and he said he’ll have an MRI on Friday. Bautista replaced him.“I just said, ‘Oh, crud Yonder Alonso Jersey ,'” Nimmo said. “It hit my knuckle.”Phillies starter Ranger Suarez (1-1) gave up eight runs — four earned — and 11 hits in four innings. Mark Leiter Jr. allowed seven unearned runs and four hits in one inning. After Alfaro’s shot cut it to 5-4, the Mets broke loose for a 10-run fifth. Suarez balked in a run and exited after Bautista followed with an RBI single. Another run scored on Alfaro’s throwing error on Oswalt’s sacrifice, and Rosario drove one in on a fielder’s choice grounder.Hoskins then dropped Austin Jackson’s two-out fly ball for an error, and another run scored. After Wilmer Flores’ RBI single, Bautista connected for his 10th homer. Bautista had a chance to hit another slam when he faced Quinn in the eighth but walked on a 3-2 pitch over his head. Bautista added an RBI double off Kingery.RUN BARRAGEThe Mets’ previous record was 23 runs at the Cubs on Aug. 16, 1987.DOMINATING PHILLYThe Mets are 42-19 over their past 61 games at Citizens Bank Park since 2012.GOING DEEPBautista has 13 seasons of double-digit homers since 2005. Suarez and right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. were recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.UP NEXTRHP Noah Syndergaard (8-2, 3.22 ERA) goes for the Mets and RHP Aaron Nola (13-3, 2.28) starts for the Phillies in a marquee matchup Friday night.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Early Wynn Jersey , the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to win. And for the second time in the series, they did it on a ninth-inning homer off All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.“It’s definitely redundant,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Same thing we’ve seen.”The Cardinals clearly love a rerun.Paul DeJong hit the go-ahead, two-run homer Wednesday night for a 3-1 victory and the Cardinals’ first sweep at Dodger Stadium since 2006.The Cardinals’ eighth straight road win helped them improve to 17-4 this month, the most wins in the majors. They’ve homered in 15 straight games, one off the current season mark of 16 in a row by Philadelphia.“It’s been a snowball effect for us,” DeJong said. “We can win every game.”St. Louis remained 2½ games behind the NL Central-leading Cubs.“It shows the resilience of our team. Everyone steps up on a nightly basis,” DeJong said. “It’s always someone new coming through.”For Jansen, it was the same old story. The Dodgers closer, who became a father for the third time earlier in the day, gave up consecutive homers to Jedd Gyorko and Matt Carpenter in the series opener Monday. That was Jansen’s first game back after missing time because of an irregular heartbeat. This time Avisail Garcia Jersey , Gyorko got a broken-bat single off Jansen (0-5), and DeJong followed with his 14th homer to left-center, giving the Cardinals their first lead of the game.“Very frustrating,” Jansen said. “Got to figure out how to get back out of this mess.”The Dodgers went quietly in the ninth, with Jordan Hicks striking out Cody Bellinger, Brian Dozier and Chris Taylor to earn his fifth save.“Hicks was filthy,” Cardinals interim manager Mike Shildt said. “That was elite stuff right there.”Dakota Hudson (4-0) got the win with one inning of relief.Los Angeles loaded the bases in the eighth, but Manny Machado grounded out to end the inning. The Dodgers stranded 30 runners while getting swept for the third time this season. They dropped to 32-33 at home, falling below .500 at Dodger Stadium for the first time since June 30. Rookie Tyler O’Neill launched his first career pinch-hit homer in the top of the eighth off Scott Alexander, tying it 1-all.Jack Flaherty and Walker Buehler dueled in a stellar matchup of rookie pitchers, although neither figured in the decision. Flaherty held the Dodgers hitless through 5 1/3 innings. Joc Pederson broke through after Buehler struck out leading off the sixth , slugging his 19th homer to right field for a 1-0 lead.Flaherty gave up just that one hit in six innings. The 22-year-old right-hander from nearby Burbank struck out 10 and walked two on 101 pitches.“It was special,” Flaherty said. “I wanted to make sure to take in the moment and enjoy it.” Buehler scattered three hits over seven innings, struck out a career-high nine and walked two on 104 pitches. The Dodgers have lost three in a row and they dropped four games behind NL West-leading Arizona in pursuit of a sixth straight division title.“Things are not working in the ‘pen,” Jansen said. “We need to figure it out.”TRAINER’S ROOMCardinals: Placed OF Marcell Ozuna on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation after he received a cortisone injection. INF Yairo Munoz (right wrist sprain) was activated from the DL.Dodgers: LHP Julio Urias (left shoulder surgery) came out of his 2 1/3-inning outing at Class A Rancho Cucamonga “feeling good,” according to Roberts. Urias will get three days off before the team decides where he goes next.RARE SWEEPThe Cardinals had not swept the Dodgers since taking a four-game set in July 2010. St. Louis earned its first sweep at Dodger Stadium since July 21-23, 2006. It was the Cardinals’ sixth sweep of the season.TURNSTILES CLICKINGThe Dodgers became the first team to top 3 million in attendance this season. They surpassed the mark for the seventh straight season and 22nd time in the last 23 years. They have drawn 3,036,253 so far.BABY MAKES THREEJansen’s wife, Gianni, gave birth to Kyrian Jeremiah Jansen, who weighed 8 pounds Bobby Jenks Jersey , 16 ounces. The couple has another son, 3-year-old Kaden Isaiah. Jansen has daughter Natalia from a previous relationship. “It’s a happy, bitter day,” Jansen said after the game.UTLEY & SONSOn his bobblehead night, Chase Utley was joined by his sons to proclaim the traditional pregame announcement: “It’s time for Dodger baseball!” Two of them were his real sons and the other was teammate Enrique Hernandez, who sat on Utley’s knee. Hernandez jokingly calls Utley “Grandpa” and has been close to the 39-year-old second baseman who is retiring at season’s end.UP NEXTCardinals: After getting Thursday off in Denver, RHP Miles Mikolas (13-3, 2.80 ERA) starts the series opener against the Rockies. His victories are the most by a first-year St. Louis pitcher since Kyle Lohse in 2008.Dodgers: After a day off, LHP Rich Hill (5-4, 3.73) starts the series opener at home Friday against San Diego. He’s 4-4 with a 3.44 ERA vs. the Padres while holding their batters to a .199 average. LOS ANGELES — A rookie in name only at this point, the Los Angeles Dodgers are merely looking at Walker Buehler now as simply a big-game pitcher. It means the Dodgers have the right guy on the mound as they go for a three-game series sweep Wednesday over the Colorado Rockies. When the first pitch in the series was thrown on Monday the Rockies led the division. The Dodgers are the club with a 1 1/2-game lead now thanks to Chris Taylor’s walk-off home run Tuesday.Article continues below ...Buehler has given the Dodgers a legitimate 1-2 punch alongside staff ace Clayton Kershaw with a second half that has had a presence about it.The Rockies will counter with a shaky Tyler Anderson as the left-hander continues to search for his first victory since July 4. He is 0-6 over his last 12 starts with a 6.38 ERA.Buehler (7-5 , 2.88 ERA) gave up four runs in a Sept. 8 start at Colorado, but that is where runs come easier than most parks. It is the only time over his last nine starts he has given up more than two earned runs. He has a 1.75 ERA going back to a July 31 outing when he gave up just one run to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Kershaw-Buehler duo is starting to bear a strong resemblance to the Kershaw-Zack Greinke duo that led the charge for Dodgers teams of the recent past.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked if the season from his 24-year-old right-hander has exceeded his expectations.“He has exceeded them in my eyes, but probably not in how own which is a good thing,” Roberts said. “I expect him to help us win a championship so that is what he has done. If you look at the stat line, it’s pretty impressive. You hope for that (and) we’re all impressed.”Anderson (6-9, 4.82) is not exactly creating the same type of buzz, although he has been better of late. He gave up two runs over seven innings at San Francisco in his last outing, but the Rockies lost a 2-0 decision.Since he last won a game, Anderson has given up six runs once, seven runs once and nine runs once. But he has also given up just one run in three starts since July 4, but the Rockies could not finish off a victory. One of those one-run outings came Aug. 9 at Dodger Stadium Carlton Fisk Jersey , but the Dodgers rallied against the Colorado bullpen for an 8-5 victory.“Part of the strength of Tyler is his mentality and his aptitude, body awareness and all those things,” Rockies manager Bud Black said, according to “Going into the game (against the Giants) he was in a pretty good spot as far as his delivery, based on what I saw the last four or five days in between his starts. He will have a chance to repeat that against the Dodgers, who he is 3-4 against in 11 career starts with a 4.10 ERA.If there is one team Buehler knows well since making his major league debut last September, it is the Rockies. He has eight appearances and four starts against Colorado, going 0-1 against the Rockies with a 4.45 ERA. Buehler made his major league debut against the Rockies on Sept. 7 last season.

HOUSTON (AP) —made a highlight-reel catch on a ball hit by Robinson Cano for the second out of the eighth inning Monday night , Seattle manager Scott Servais started to think it just might not be his team’s night.Turns out he just had to wait a little bit longer.Rookie pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach hit his first career grand slam two batters later, lifting the Mariners over the Houston Astros 4-1 on Monday night. The Mariners trailed 1-0 when Nelson Cruz singled off Hector Rondon (2-5) with no outs in the eighth, and Kyle Seager singled with one out. Cano then hit a ball into shallow center field that looked like it would drop, but Marisnick, who also made a nice grab for the inning’s first out, sprinted before diving and extending his arm to make the catch.Rondon walked pinch-hitter Denard Span to load bases before Vogelbach sent a 97-mph fastball into the bullpen in right-center.“Obviously a great at-bat by him and really coming through in a big moment,” Servais said. “It seems like we had to figure out a way to get the ball away from Marisnick. … We figured out a way to hit one where he couldn’t catch it.”It was the third pinch-hit grand slam in Mariners’ history and the first since Franklin Gutierrez hit one on July 21, 2015 at Detroit.“I think I’ve learned my lesson pinch-hitting and failing multiple times with trying to be really patient and trying to go up there and work an at-bat like I was starting,” Vogelbach said. “So just going up there and trying to get something elevated and hard and put a good swing on it and see what happens.”The loss cut Houston’s lead in the AL West to four games over Oakland, which was off Monday night.Marwin Gonzalez had an RBI double to give the Astros the lead in the fourth. But they couldn’t muster much else on a night they managed just three hits Scott Feldman Jersey , with the last one coming in the fifth.Mariners starter Wade LeBlanc allowed three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. Ryan Cook (2-1) struck out one in a perfect seventh for the win, and Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth for his MLB-leading 56th save.“We had a rough night offensively,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “It didn’t look like we were picking the ball up very well. Leblanc always does this cat-and-mouse game of moving the ball around. We’ve had pretty good success against him, but for whatever reason, we weren’t taking great swings against him.”Houston’s Framber Valdez walked five but gave up just two hits in five innings. Rondon allowed four hits and four runs for his second straight loss after giving up three hits and two runs in 1 1/3 innings of a loss to Arizona on Friday night.LeBlanc walked a batter in both the first and second innings but didn’t allow a hit until Yuli Gurriel doubled with two outs in the fourth. Gonzalez followed with his double, which bounced off the wall in left center, to score Gurriel and make it 1-0.TRAINER’S ROOMMariners: LHP James Paxton rejoined the team Monday after resting at home for a few days after being diagnosed with pneumonia. He said he had a fever of as high as 104 degrees and it was the sickest he could ever remember being. He’s feeling much better now but is still a little week and lacking energy. He’ll try to throw a bullpen session either Tuesday or Wednesday but isn’t sure when he’ll feel good enough to rejoin the rotation.Astros: OF Josh Reddick was replaced by Marisnick in the bottom of the fifth inning because of discomfort in his right ankle.THEY SAID ITMarisnick and his mentality in center field: “Anytime I’m out there, I’m trying to take away as many hits and runs from the other team as I can. Our pitchers have carried us through big spots all year and as a defense, we take pride in helping them out when we can.”UP NEXTThe Astros will push back Gerrit Cole’s scheduled start until Friday and start rookie Josh James (0-0, 4.22 ERA) in the second game of the series on Tuesday night. Hinch said they wanted to give Cole a little extra rest before his next start as his innings have started to pile up. The flame-throwing James has made two appearances out of the bullpen since making his major league debut in a start on Sept. 1. Mike Leake (10-9 Eugenio Suarez Jersey , 3.99) will pitch for Seattle. HOUSTON (AP) — Seattle’s Felix Hernandez has lost his spot in the rotation in the wake of his latest terrible start in a season filled with struggles. The right-hander, who threw a perfect game in 2012, will pitch out of the bullpen for the first time in his career. He’s having the worst season of 14-year career as the Mariners chase their first playoff berth since 2001. Hernandez has a career-high 5.73 ERA this season and is 0-4 in his last five starts, capped by a clunker against the Rangers on Tuesday when he allowed a career-high 11 runs — seven earned — on eight hits in six innings. The six-time All-Star and 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, who earned the nickname King Felix for his majestic presence on the mound, trotted from the dugout to the bullpen after the third inning Thursday night against Houston but did not pitch. Manager Scott Servais announced the decision postgame.Servais said he spoke with Hernandez before the game and informed him of the decision. Hernandez has spent his entire career with the Mariners, where all his 398 appearances have been as a starter.“He’s done an unbelievable job as a Mariner,” Servais said. “And I certainly don’t take any of this lightly, but I just think trying to make the best decision for the ballclub and really the best decision for Felix at this point is just take a breath. Step back, gather yourself.”Servais said the conversation was a difficult one.“Certainly , respect him and everything he’s done here throughout his career, but these things happen and ultimately it’s about the team,” he said. “It’s never easy but again hopefully he takes it the right way. He’ll get a chance to pitch at some point down there and maybe he can work his way back in the rotation. We’ll see. He’ll let us know on that.”Hernandez declined to speak to reporters when approached after the game. The 32-year-old right-hander is 168-124 with a 3.32 ERA in his career. But after posting an AL-leading and career-best 2.14 ERA in 2014, Hernandez has become increasingly less dominant each year, bottoming out this season by going 8-10 in 23 starts.Hernandez got two wins to end the month of June before a terrible July where he went 0-3, with the lowlight coming when he allowed six hits and seven runs in just 2 2/3 innings of an 11-5 loss to the Angels.Servais said the team hasn’t decided who will take Hernandez’s spot in the rotation Sunday in the finale of this four-game series.

G Fiume/Getty ImagesKyle Freeland Jersey , the New York Mets are not intending to trade pitchers Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard before Tuesday's non-waiver deadline.According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Mets do not plan to rebuild and instead want to remain in contention in 2019.DeGrom is under team control through at least the 2020 season, while Syndergaard cannot become a free agent until after 2021.Olneyalso noted this willingness to contend in 2019 has created hesitation to deal fellow pitcher Zack Wheeler, who has one more season before hitting free agency. The Mets are well out of contention in 2018, entering Monday in last place in the National League East with a 44-59 record. This has led to trades of pending free agentsJeurysFamiliaandAsdrubalCabrera. However, the team is being much more careful about assets who can help for next season.Despite the disappointing effort this year, things could theoretically be different in 2019 with better luck on the injury front. Key players likeSyndergaard,YoenisCespedes, Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier and others have missed significant time this year and haven't lived up to expectations even when healthy. All of these players remain under contract for next year Chris Iannetta Jersey , giving plenty of hope for what could happen if they replicate their past production. Adding in the emergence of starting pitchers Wheeler and StevenMatz, the Mets front office clearly believes there are brighter days ahead. The team has previously said it would "consider" offers for bothSyndergaardanddeGrom, perTimHealeyofNewsday, but the asking price has remained high.A trade involvingSyndergaardwould likely be selling low because of his health concerns despite his 6-1 record and 2.89 ERA. He has only made 13 starts this year because of a finger injury and, more recently, hand, foot and mouth disease.DeGromcould offer a bigger return thanks to his major league-best 1.82 ERA, but the Mets want him to keep getting outs for them next year and possibly beyond. Through the first two games, the slugger is 3-for-7 with one walk, four RBI and a double. His series has been highlighted by a clutch go-ahead hit in Game 2:It's important to note that Martinez is currently dealing with an ankle injury he suffered in Game 1. PerESPN, Boston skipper Alex Cora would not commit to Martinez being in the lineup on Friday. Then again, losing the designated hitter could also affect the World Series MVP chase. Betts may shift to the infield and play second base to clear room in the outfield for Martinez if the slugger is healthy. Both Martinez (.330 average, 43 home runs and 130 RBI) and Betts (.346 average, .438 on-base percentage , 32 home runs and 80 RBI) are in the mix for the American League MVP award this season as well.Benintendi has gone 4-for-8 with one walk, one double and one RBI (and an impressive catch) through the first two games, and 2018 ALCS MVP Jackie Bradley Jr. has been unable to carry over his momentum from the previous series, going just 1-for-7 against Los Angeles so far.David Price (+1500) comes in at fifth after throwing six innings of three-hit, shutout baseball in a 4-2 victory in Game 2. Entering the 2018 postseason, he faced long odds to be considered for the award, given his teams lost each of his first 10 career postseason starts. However, he is 2-0 in his last three starts this postseason, with Boston winning all three games. There are six Red Sox players on the list before the first Dodger shows up, with Manny Machado coming in at +2500. The midseason acquisition is just 2-for-7 in the series Miguel Cabrera Jersey , but he leads Los Angeles with three RBI.Los Angeles first baseman David Freese was named the 2011 World Series MVP after playing the role of hero for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has once again shown up on baseball's biggest stage, leading his team with a .600 average (3-for-5).Of course, a series never truly gets underway until the road team wins a game. Boston successfully protected home-field advantage at Fenway Park, and now, the series shifts to Dodger Stadium. That means the pursuit of the World Series and of the MVP award will be taken up a notch.

Division standings will meet Friday night at Kauffman Stadium in the first contest of a three-game series. The first place Cleveland Indians (73-54) will face the fifth-place Kansas City Royals (38-90) , who are 35 1/2 games behind division leading Cleveland. For the Indians, this will be the final three games on a seven-game two-city road trip to Boston and Kansas City. The Indians split a four-game series with the Red Sox, who have the best record in the majors. Now comes a three-game series with the Royals, who have the second-worst record in the league.Article continues below ...The Indians won the first two games in Boston, and lost the last two, including a 7-0 blanking by the Red Sox on Thursday. The only good to come out of Thursday’s game for the Indians was the return of right-hander Josh Tomlin, who was activated off the disabled list prior to the game and pitched the last three innings of Thursday’s blowout. That was the silver lining to the loss, according to manager Terry Francona.“Josh got into a good rhythm and gave us three innings, so now we go into Kansas City with our bullpen back to where it should be,” Francona said. “(Friday’s game) will be every bit as important to us as (Thursday’s game).”Friday’s pitching matchup will be Cleveland right-hander Mike Clevinger (9-7, 3.25 ERA) versus Kansas City right-hander Brad Keller (6-5, 3.32).Clevinger is coming off an 8-0 victory over Baltimore in his last start Sunday. In that game , Clevinger pitched six scoreless innings on seven hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk. He was removed from the game because his pitch count was at 104.Clevinger has rebounded nicely from a midseason slump. After going 1-4 with a 4.85 ERA in five July starts, Clevinger is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four August outings. In two starts against the Royals this year, Clevinger is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. His last appearance against Kansas City was a 6-2 win on May 12, when he pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. In seven career appearances against the Royals, Clevinger is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA.Keller has split the 2018 season between the starting rotation and the bullpen. In 14 starts, he is 5-4 with a 3.67 ERA. In 21 relief appearances, he is 1-1, 2.01.Keller’s last start was a 5-4 win over the White Sox on Saturday, when he pitched five innings , allowing one run and five hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. In his last six starts, Keller is 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA.Friday will be Keller’s first career start against Cleveland. He has made two relief appearances against the Indians this season, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 4 1/3 innings. The Indians will be without reliever Neil Ramirez, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with lower back spasms.Despite losing their last two games in Boston, the streaking Indians come to Kansas City having won nine of their last 12 games. Cleveland is 15-6 in the month of August. The Royals have lost five games in a row and are 5-17 in August. TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin picked a great year to have a great year.Corbin will be one of the most coveted free agents in the majors this winter, and entering the market after a career year is never a bad plan.He will bring a 10-5 record and a 3.06 ERA into his 29th start of the season Friday in the second game of a four-game series against Atlanta at Chase Field. The Braves will counter with right-hander Kevin Gausman (9-9, 3.78 ERA).Article continues below ...Atlanta won the series opener, although it was not easy. The Braves took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, lost a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth on a Paul Goldschmidt game-tying homer, and rallied for a 7-6 Brandin Cooks Jersey Elite , 10-inning victory to avoid a second straight difficult loss. The Braves lost a six-run lead in the eighth and a one-run lead in the ninth in a 9-8 loss to Boston at home on Wednesday.“I tell you what it speaks to, the makeup of that team in there,” Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said, nodding toward the clubhouse. “The resiliency. The fight. The grit. It speaks volumes. After what we experienced (Wednesday) and to potentially get your heart ripped out again … and those guys pulled off a win.”The Braves increased their NL East lead to 3 1/2 games while the Diamondbacks fell 2 1/2 games behind NL West-leading Colorado. The Diamondbacks have lost five of six and will look to Corbin to turn it around.Corbin, 29, is third in the NL with a career-high 214 strikeouts, trailing only Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. Corbin is averaging 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings, second in the NL, and his 5.2-to-1 ratio of strikeouts to walks is third.About all he has lacked this season is consistent run support. Those numbers probably would have translated into more victories had he received more than an average of 4.04 runs per start. Corbin has turned it up down the stretch, having given up as many as four runs only twice in his last 13 starts. Nine of those were quality starts.Corbin was chosen to make his first Opening Day start this season, threw a one-hit shutout in his fourth start and kept rolling. He recently tied Miguel Batista’s team record for starters by going 11 consecutive starts without giving up a home run. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said he was impressed by the offseason commitment Corbin showed after going 14-13 with 4.03 ERA in 2017.“It’s not a surprise to me — it is what he had in him,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said of Corbin’s year.“The type of offseason , work-wise, that he had was leading me to believe he was prepared physically for the season. Emotionally is always a wild card. You just don’t know where they are going from a mindset standpoint. But fundamentally I knew that he was going to be locked in.“It was a big year for him personally for a lot of different reasons. I know he wanted to contribute to this team the best that he could. My conversations with him, they seemed very directed and pointed toward a healthy year. When he was named the Opening Day starter, I think it took him emotionally to a whole new level.”Gausman, the fourth player taken in the 2012 draft, has pitched like it since joining the Braves in a July 31 deadline deal with Baltimore, a trade that also brought reliever Darren O’Day in exchange for a package of four minor league players and international bonus pool money. After a few minor tweaks to his approach, Gausman has posted a 4-1 record and a 1.66 ERA is six starts for Atlanta, including four quality starts. He has given up as many as three earned runs only once. In 38 innings, he has given up 26 hits and has 26 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .190 batting average.“They’ve made some adjustments,” Snitker said. “I think they did something with the delivery. Our system, the game-planning Authentic Robert Woods Jersey , has benefited him. He’s another one who has really fit in great here. He’s been really, really good for us.”Gausman was 5-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 21 starts with the Orioles, where he spent his previous five seasons. The Braves control him for one more year before possible free agency.Gausman has never faced the Diamondbacks.Corbin has made five quality starts in his last six appearances, and he threw five scoreless innings against the Dodgers in the one game he did not, receiving a no-decision in a 3-2 loss last Saturday in Los Angeles. He had 48 strikeouts against four walks in that span.Corbin faced Atlanta in their first series this season, giving up six hits and four runs in six innings of a 5-1 loss on July 15, the final game before the All-Star break. Corbin was named to the NL All-Star team but did not pitch in the game. He is 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA in eight career appearances (six starts) against Atlanta. That is Corbin’s lowest ERA against any opponent he has faced more than once.

NEW YORK (AP) Frank White Jersey , and the weight became a burden as his record fell to 2-14, the most losses in the major leagues.”At a certain point of that stretch, I’m just hoping not to get a loss,” he said. ”Not even hoping for wins at that point, I’m just hoping not to lose.”Given a five-run lead in the second inning, Cobb breezed and ended skids for himself and the Baltimore Orioles.Cobb allowed one run and seven hits in six innings in a 7-5 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday that ended the Orioles’ streak of 11 consecutive road losses.”He’s handled it so well,” manager Buck Showalter said. ”I’m sure there’s some sarcastic response to that, but he’s a pro and he’s pitched better than that. He’s going to be a good pitcher for us when all’s said and done. He’s got a lot of ways to get you out.”Cobb (3-14) had been 0-7 since a June 5 victory at the New York Mets, losing his last five outings. Since he last won , the Orioles traded Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Brad Brach, Jonathan Schoop, Kevin Gausman and Darren O’Day. Even with the win, they are a major league-worst 33-75.”It’s going to take a lot of clawing and fighting for wins right now,” he said. ”It’s going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, and we’re going to have to fight for everything we get. But if you understand that and if you embrace it and you kind of go with the journey that we’re on, it makes it a little easier.”Cobb committed to the Orioles in March when he signed a $53 million Kelvin Herrera Jersey , four-year contract.”When I was younger, I remember talking to veteran players. They would tell me how fortunate I am to be in the system when we were winning ballgames,” he said. ”They would say stories of being on losing teams and just how miserable it really is. And I’m getting a little taste of reality on that with seeing all these good players that we have being shipped off, and just the overall where the season’s gone and seeing it come to a head these last couple of days with the trade deadline. It’s not fun.”Trey Mancini and Renato Nunez each had three hits and two RBIs as the Orioles took a 5-0 lead in the second and a 7-1 lead in the third against Sonny Gray (8-8). Gleyber Torres homered twice and had four RBIs for New York.Mancini hit a run-scoring single in the second, and Caleb Joseph reached on a bunt single as third baseman Miguel Andujar delayed his throw because Torres didn’t sprint from his second base position to cover first. Nunez followed with a two-run double and Tim Beckham had a two-run single .Torres led off the bottom half with his first home run since July 1 , and Cobb struck out Giancarlo Stanton to end the inning with the bases load.Mancini homered into Monument Park behind center field in the third, and Breyvic Valera greeted Lynn with a grounder to Didi Gregorius. The shortstop looked to second for a force, saw Torres wasn’t there, and then threw too late to first as another run scored as Valera got his first hit and RBI with the Orioles.Andjuar got a based loaded-single against Mychal Givens in the eighth , but Paul Fry got pinch-hitter Neil Walker to ground into an inning-ending double play. Torres homered against Mike Wright Jr. in the ninth.Mancini knows that others will be counted on for more run production following the departures of Machado and Schoop.”Try not to put too much pressure on yourself, but obviously those are two humongous voids that can’t be filled immediately,” he said.DEBUTCody Carroll, a 25-year-old right-hander obtained from the Yankees last week in the deal that sent reliever Zach Britton to New York, pitched a scoreless, one-hit seventh in his major league debut.CONSTRUCTION PROJECTOrioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said of the team’s turn toward youth: ”It’s a lot like building a house. I think if you demolish the house and build it with the foundation from the ground up rather than renovating it one room at a time, I think it helps in terms of the overall progress you can make.”CATCHING UPINF Jonathan Villar is scheduled to report to the Orioles at Texas on Thursday, two days after he was acquired from Milwaukee.LEAPINGEasily out at the plate on a relay throw from Torres in the fifth when trying to score from first on Nunez’s double, Joseph slowed and jumped Jason Hammel Jersey , grabbing Austin Romine and falling gently together with the catcher in an effort to avoid a collision.TRAINER’S ROOMOrioles: Strength and conditioning coach Joe Hogarty was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Adam Jones. ”It doesn’t look like anything’s broken, but he’s got some lacerations and contusions,” Showalter said. ”It got him in the mouth and the nose.” Showalter said he asked head athletic trainer Brian Ebel ”are we at the point where now where we can kid or laugh about it?” and Ebel responded ”not quite yet.”UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Andrew Cashner (3-9) is scheduled to start Thursday for the Orioles and RHP Yovani Gallardo (5-1) for the Rangers.— NEW YORK (AP) — David Wright finally made it back into a major league game Friday night, grounding out in his first plate appearance for the New York Mets in nearly 2½ years.Sidelined by neck, back and shoulder injuries since May 27, 2016, Wright came up as a pinch-hitter against the Miami Marlins and received a warm ovation from the Citi Field crowd. With fans on their feet and his wife and two young daughters in the stands, the 35-year-old Wright led off the bottom of the fifth inning and swung at the first pitch he saw, a 96 mph fastball from Jose Urena. The seven-time All-Star hit a bouncer to the left of third baseman Brian Anderson , who made a nifty pickup of a short hop and threw across the diamond to retire Wright. The Mets’ captain returned to the dugout, where he high-fived and hugged teammates with a big smile on his face.Wright is scheduled to start at third base Saturday night against the last-place Marlins in his goodbye game before a sellout crowd. Unable to overcome all the injuries, he’s said he expects this weekend to mark his final appearance in the big leagues.Wright was on deck when the last out was made in the fourth, causing the crowd to boo loudly when the inning ended. He clutched his bat and paced the dugout for most of the next half-inning before bounding onto the field even before the Marlins took their positions with a 3-1 lead in the fifth.Once one of the top players in baseball, Wright was reinstated from the disabled list Tuesday but didn’t play in New York’s three-game series against NL East champion Atlanta this week. With the Braves trying to earn home-field advantage in the Division Series, the Mets did not want to compromise the integrity of the pennant race.Wright made his major league debut for the Mets in 2004, three years after they drafted him 38th overall. He is the longest-tenured active player to spend his entire career with one team.

CLEVELAND (AP) —The two-time Cy Young Award winner pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout this season and new arrival Leonys Martin homered again for Cleveland Danny Salazar Jersey , leading the Indians to a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.Kluber (14-6) got better as the game went on, and his performance eased any concerns the Indians had about the star right-hander. Kluber had lost two of his three previous starts and received an injection in his right knee before the All-Star break. He walked one, hit a batter and struck out seven. He’s back.“It’s wonderful,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “It seemed like he was in command the entire night, and early on we weren’t doing anything offensively, so it wasn’t like he had a cushion to pitch with.”Kluber matched zeros for five innings against Felix Pena (1-3), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Martin hit a leadoff homer. Martin has quickly endeared himself to his teammates and Cleveland fans by hitting two homers and batting .500 with three RBIs and three runs in just three games since being acquired in a trade with Detroit.“I’m really happy, man,” Martin said. “I came here to help. And I want to do my best to help this team to get where we want. We’ve got a long way to go still.”The AL Central-leading Indians only got four hits but notched their 60th win.The Angels were again without All-Star outfielder Mike Trout , who missed his third straight game with a sore right wrist. But even with Trout in the lineup, Los Angeles would have had a tough time against Kluber. The right-hander was never in trouble and he cooled off Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, who homered twice in Friday’s win.Ohtani came in batting .643 with four homers and eight RBIs in three games against Cleveland, but went 0 for 4 and struck out twice against Kluber.“It wasn’t a whole lot different than what we had been (doing), or at least I tried to do the last time I pitched against him,” said Kluber, who gave up Ohtani’s first homer on April 4. “Last time he hit the home run off me, I made a mistake up and out over the plate. I just didn’t make that mistake tonight.”Pena didn’t get out of the first inning in his previous outing, and the right-hander started poorly Edwin Encarnacion Jersey , walking the first two batters. However, Pena settled in and didn’t give up his first hit until the sixth, when Martin drove a 3-1 pitch 415 feet to right-center.Moments before Martin connected for his second homer in two days, the Indians attempted to jinx Pena by displaying — “Felix Pena is currently throwing a no-hitter” — on Progressive Field’s enormous scoreboard. The strategy worked as Martin ended Pena’s flirtation with history. The Indians added a second run when Francisco Lindor followed with a double and scored on Michael Brantley’s single.“Got the ball right in the middle, and thank God, I put a good swing on it,” Martin said.SUPER SHORTSTOP Lindor took an infield hit away from Justin Upton with a sensational play in the sixthUpton hit a pop between the mound and second base that the All-Star shortstop snagged barehanded on one hop before throwing in time to get the Angels left fielder.Martin remembers Lindor making similar plays against him.“I used to hate that guy,” he said, smiling. “I use to hate him. He’s really good. He’s one of the best in the game. He made that play look so easy.”TROUT UPDATETrout expressed frustration that his wrist isn’t healed. He’s still having trouble swinging since injuring his wrist while sliding on Wednesday.“It’s just a day-to-day thing Andrew Miller Jersey ,” he said. “I want to be out there. It’s frustrating. You don’t want to be sitting on the bench watching your team out there.”STAR POWEROhtani showed off his power to all fields in Friday’s game, homering to right and left against Mike Clevinger.Although Ohtani doesn’t have a typical slugger’s swing, Francona says he’s got plenty of pop.“And he can run,” Francona said. “He’s an interesting guy. He’s got a chance to be pretty special.”TRAINER’S ROOMAngels: LHP Tyler Skaggs was placed on the disabled list with a strained hip muscle. Manager Mike Scioscia said Skaggs, who was scheduled to pitch Sunday’s finale, felt tightness in his previous start on July 31.Indians: C Yan Gomes will be out of the starting lineup for several games due to hamstring tendinitis. Gomes has been bothered with the condition for a while, and aggravated his leg while running out a double in the second inning on Friday.UP NEXTIndians rookie Shane Bieber will make his first start against the Angels, who will call up rookie Deck McGuire from the minors. Bieber pitched into the seventh inning against Minnesota on July 30, but didn’t factor into the decision. BALTIMORE — Kendrys Morales will have a chance to tie a major league record Monday when his Toronto Blue Jays come to Oriole Park to start a three-game series versus Baltimore.Morales homered for the seventh consecutive game Sunday in a loss to the Phillies. The major league record for homers in consecutive games is eight Tyler Naquin Jersey , shared by Ken Griffey Jr. (1993), Don Mattingly (1987) and Dale Long (1956).“It’s pretty impressive,” Toronto manager John Gibbons told the media Sunday. “It’s a surprise he still gets pitches to hit. It really couldn’t happen to a better guy.”Article continues below ...Morales also could be helped by the fact that he’s coming to Camden Yards, a place the baseball tends to fly out of on a warm summer night.Morales comes into the Baltimore series with a .264 average, 21 home runs and 53 RBIs. His homer Sunday that stretched the streak to seven came in the first inning against Philadelphia.Toronto had won five in a row before Sunday’s loss, so the Blue Jays will try to start another winning streak. They’ve done well against the Orioles this season, winning 12 of 13 games versus Baltimore. In fact, the Blue Jays took all 10 games they played against the Orioles in Toronto this season. The Blue Jays (60-70) will start Sam Gaviglio (3-6, 4.94 ERA) while Baltimore counters with David Hess (2-8 , 5.50). Gaviglio’s last start came versus Baltimore, when he picked up the win after allowing two runs in seven innings in Toronto’s 7-2 victory Tuesday. He is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in two starts versus the Orioles.Hess is 0-1 and has a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Blue Jays after allowing one run in seven innings of a 6-0 loss at Toronto on Wednesday. He has been pitching better lately for a Baltimore team that’s been having problems everywhere. The Orioles (37-94) come into the series having dropped eight straight games after the Yankees completed a four-game sweep with a 5-3 victory Sunday night. They also lost rookie center fielder Cedric Mullins with a hip injury. He did not play Sunday. Manager Buck Showalter told the media that Mullins suffered the injury during Saturday’s doubleheader loss.“He’s not sure exactly which play,” Showalter told the media. “He thought it was probably on a throw he made, kind of off-balance, awkward throw. Just didn’t think it was in his best interest (to play Sunday). I don’t want it to linger on.”Mullins has a .309 average in 15 games since coming to the major leagues for the first time Aug. 10. That’s when Showalter moved long-time center fielder Adam Jones to right field. In fact, Showalter kept Jones in right field with Mullins out Sunday because he wants the veteran to get as used to that position as much as possible. The skipper used Craig Gentry in center field in place of Mullins on Sunday. The Orioles are hoping the Mullins’ injury won’t be one that keeps him out for a long stretch as he’s already become a solid lead-off hitter.

Pham awoke to the news he had been traded on Tuesday morning , courtesy of a phone call from St. Louis Cardinals President John Mozeliak. The outfielder is headed to join the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the deal, a year after establishing himself as one of the National League’s top outfielders – and providing yet another shakeup for the struggling Cardinals in the process.”I was really shocked,” Pham said in an interview on MLB Network Radio. ”When you wake up to your boss calling you and telling you you got traded, it’s shocking.”St. Louis sent the 30-year-old and $500,000 in international signing bonus allocation to the Rays for a trio of minor leaguers: outfielder Justin Williams, left-hander Genesis Cabrera and right-hander Roel Ramirez. The move is another dramatic change for a disappointing St. Louis team that entered the day fourth in the NL Central and fired former manager Mike Matheny in mid-July. The Cardinals are likely to miss the postseason for a third straight year for the first time since 1997-99.”It hurts, specifically for me because I’ve been underperforming from my expectations,” Pham said on MLB Network Radio. ”I feel like if I had just done my job better, we wouldn’t be so far down in the standings.”Pham has been a member of the Cardinals organization since selected on the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft. After a series of injuries, the center fielder had a breakout season in 2017 when he hit .306 with 23 homers and 25 steals in 128 games. He was 11th in the NL MVP voting.Pham is hitting .248 with 14 home runs Max Kepler Jersey , 41 RBIs and 10 stolen bases this season. He talked during spring training of a 30-30 season in homers and steals, and he batted .358 in April before dropping to .197 in May and June.Pham is eligible for salary arbitration for the first time next winter, and Rays manager Kevin Cash said he would start Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.”This is a total player,” Tampa Bay general manager Erik Neander said. ”Yes he’s 30, yes we’re talking about a young core of players, but it’s three years of control with a guy we think has the potential to be an impact outfielder.”His departure could lead to more playing time for Harrison Bader, who is hitting .265. The Cardinals also called up outfielder Tyler O’Neill, who is hitting .311 with 26 home runs in 61 games at Triple-A Memphis, and promptly put him in the lineup against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.”It’s not about me and what this creates for me as a player individually,” Bader said. This is about how this opening will help this team win and make a push.”Williams , 22, is a former second-round draft pick and left-handed hitting outfielder who was batting .258 for Triple-A Durham. He made his major league debut this month and was an International League All-Star.Cabrera, 21, is 7-6 with a 4.12 ERA in 21 games for Montgomery of the Double-A Southern League. Ramirez, 23, was 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 26 games as a reliever for Montgomery. Also on Tuesday, the Cardinals traded minor league outfielder Oscar Mercado to the Cleveland Indians for minor league outfielders Conner Capel and Jhon Torres. It was the trading of Pham, however, that had Mozeliak answering questions about another shakeup to a Cardinals team that’s failed to meet expectations this season.Mozeliak said the trade had nothing to do with an article in Sports Illustrated earlier this season in which Pham complained about not being called up from the minor leagues sooner.”He was in the organization for 12 years, injured a lot Michael Pineda Jersey , a lot of ups and downs, but in the end we were the ones that believed in him,” Mozeliak said. ”Most people who have his track record don’t make it here.”— OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Once they got behind closed doors in the clubhouse, the Houston Astros showered Justin Verlander with champagne. No, it wasn’t for helping them avoid a sweep at the Coliseum. But that was a nice benefit, too.Verlander pitched just well enough to earn his 200th career win and the Astros hit five home runs, beating the Oakland Athletics 9-4 Sunday to retake sole possession of the AL West lead.“That was one of the tougher wins I had to get this season,” Verlander said. “Our boys swung the bats and that made for a great day.”The surging A’s had won the first two games at the Coliseum to tie shaky Houston atop the division. But Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Evan Gattis, Alex Bregman Fernando Rodney Jersey , Marwin Gonzalez and Martin Maldonado later homered for the defending World Series champions. Maldonado also tripled and doubled.“What a great way to get Verlander his 200th,” Bregman said. “We hand the ball to JV and he wins. He got us going in the right direction. He battled his head off for us.”Verlander (12-8), who has not given up more than four runs in any of his 20 career games against the A’s, entered the day with a major league-leading 1.74 ERA on the road. Matt Chapman and Khris Davis hit solo homers off Verlander in the first inning, and Davis added his 36th homer, a two-run drive, in the third that made it 4-all.Gattis put the Astros ahead for good in the fourth with his 24th home run.“I’m guessing this won’t be his last win,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said of Verlander. “You just look at his numbers. He’s something special.”Verlander gave up four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six but gave up three home runs and has allowed 25 this season. He became the 114th pitcher with at least 200 career wins.“When you reach a milestone, you look back, understand and relish what you’ve done ,” the 35-year-old Verlander said. “I look around from when I started and realized it’s a long journey. From age 21 to now, mentally, it’s been a process.”Brad Peacock took over for Verlander in the sixth, with two runners on and one out. He struck out Stephen Piscotty on a full count, walked Marcus Semien and got Mark Canha swinging on a 2-2 pitch. Four Houston relievers shut down the A’s on one hit over 3 2/3 innings. The Astros won for the second time in nine games. The Athletics had won 13 of their past 16 games to draw even with Houston. After allowing six runs in three previous August starts combined, Sean Manaea (11-9) gave up six in four-plus innings against the Astros.TRAINER’S ROOMAstros: 2B Jose Altuve (right knee) began a rehab assignment Sunday for Triple-A Fresno at Tacoma, going 1 for 3 with a strikeout and hit by pitch. … C Brian McCann (right knee) went 0 for 3 and caught six innings on Saturday night for the Grizzlies.UP NEXTAstros: RHP Gerrit Cole (11-5, 2.71) starts for Houston at Seattle on Monday night.Athletics: RHP Mike Fiers (8-6, 3.38) takes the mound against Texas Monday night.

the St. Louis Cardinals to remove the interim from his title as the team’s manager.Hours after the club announced Tuesday that it signed Shildt through the 2020 season D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey Elite , St. Louis showed why he canceled its intentions of a highly publicized offseason search for a skipper to replace Mike Matheny. With Jose Martinez and Tyler O’Neill slamming two-run homers to complement seven good innings from rookie Jack Flaherty, the Cardinals improved to 27-12 under Shildt with a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates to solidify their position atop the National League wild-card standings.Article continues below ...St. Louis (74-58) will attempt to win its 10th straight series Wednesday night when it plays the middle game of its set with Pittsburgh.“We just felt like we could not do better,” Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said. “Clearly the relationship he has with our players and coaching staff and front office and ownership, it just made this a very seamless decision. We didn’t agonize too much over it because we have a lot of confidence in him.”As they should. Shildt has played a more aggressive brand of baseball than Matheny preferred, unafraid to start runners regardless of the hitter or runner. He’s also helped revamp the bullpen, introducing young arms such as Dakota Hudson and Daniel Poncedeleon to high-leverage situations and also adding Opening Day starter Carlos Martinez to the mix last week. The effects could be obvious if St. Louis can continue this run and qualify for the playoffs. In Hudson and Martinez, it has two power arms who could play the Andrew Miller role that Cleveland manager Terry Francona created for its trade deadline acquisition in 2016, helping the Indians come within a win of breaking their now 70-year World Series drought.“Everybody’s doing their job, just having so much fun and competing ,” Flaherty said.Miles Mikolas (13-3, 2.94) takes the mound for the Cardinals after his worst start of the year, allowing five runs (four earned) and 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings Friday night of a 7-5 win at Colorado. Mikolas gave up all his runs in the fifth inning, getting the hook one out shy of qualifying for his sixth straight win.The All-Star right-hander has faced the Pirates (64-68) three times this year, going 0-1 with a pair of no-decisions. He’s 1-1 in five career games with a 2.91 ERA.Opposing Mikolas is right-hander Trevor Williams (10-9, 3.44), who’s enjoying the best season of his three-year career. Williams is coming off a no-decision Aug. 22 in a 2-1 loss to Atlanta, pitching six innings and allowing only one run off two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.Williams has been outstanding in his last seven starts, permitting four runs over 42 innings , although he’s only 3-2 in that span. But he’s struggled mightily in 10 career games against St. Louis, posting a 2-4 mark with a 6.93 ERA and giving up a whopping 56 hits in only 37 2/3 innings. MILWAUKEE (AP) — The pitch from Bob Uecker was, predictably, just a bit outside. The Milwaukee Brewers announcer is always good for a laugh, even before the first game of the NL Championship Series.“Bob will be throwing out the (ceremonial) first pitch tonight,” a press conference moderator said as Uecker walked to a podium a couple hours before the Brewers hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.“I am,” the straight-faced Uecker joked quizzically. There is perhaps no better ambassador for Brewers baseball than the 84-year-old Uecker.Fittingly, he’s known by the nickname “Mr. Baseball.”In his 48th season calling Brewers games, Uecker is beloved in his hometown of Milwaukee for his dry wit and entertaining calls. The Brewers have two statues dedicated to Uecker at Miller Park David Price Jersey , including one in the last row of the upper deck that commemorates one of Uecker’s commercials for Miller Lite in which he repeated the phrase “I must be in the front row!”He remains an important member of the Brewers, considered as much a part of the organization as MVP candidate Christian Yelich or veteran outfielder Ryan Braun.A Hall of Fame broadcaster, Uecker can relate to the current generation of players in different ways.First off, he’s a former major league catcher, having played six years with three teams. His career ended in 1967, when the lifetime .200 hitter managed just a .150 average playing with the Phillies and Braves.“Well, I think for the most part they know that I played, and I think that’s where the relation really comes in,” Uecker said.“I’ve been on the same side where you’ve got a 10-game losing streak. You’ve got to talk to the press. It’s not sometimes the most pleasant thing , but you have to do it. And I know what that’s like,” he added. He also starred in the TV series “Mr. Belvedere” and the movie “Major League,” two sequels to the baseball franchise – though don’t get him started on the third one.“The third one stunk,” he said. “It was really bad. I could have played in that one.”But he is thoroughly enjoying the Brewers’ run to the NLCS in their first postseason appearance since 2011.“And I think the bottom line is that Bob … belongs in a baseball clubhouse. He fits. He gets it,” manager Craig Counsell said. “His sense of humor doesn’t have an age span.”__

the release of second baseman Chase Utley on Friday to facilitate his retirement from baseball.Utley confirmed his intention to end his MLB career following the 2018 season in July."I transitioned to a part-time player , something new for me, but I took it in stride," he told reporters. "Also, a part-time strength coach, part-time pitching coach, occasionally part-time catching coach as well as a part-time general manager. The thing I'm having the most difficult time with is being a part-time dad. So that's really the reason I'm shutting it down. I'm ready to be a full-time dad."Utley had one season left on the two-year, $2 millioncontracthe signed with the Dodgers in February, so the release was required to make his retirement official. The 39-year-old California native spent the final three-plus years of his career with the Dodgers. He rose to prominence with the Philadelphia Phillies across 13 seasons that featured six All-Star Game selections Bill Melton Jersey , four Silver Slugger Awards and a World Series title in 2008. He also finished in the top eight of MVP voting three times in a four-year span starting in 2006.Utley said during his July press conference going from that type of top-tier superstar to somebody fighting to just get at-bats with the Dodgers in recent seasons was key in his decision to step aside."Going from making several All-Star teams to being a part-time player kind of wrenches your pride a little bit," he said. "My goal, the reason I came here, was to win a championship. I didn't want to get in the way of that. If I'm part of it, great. If not, I'm still happy."L.A. fell short of that title goal, losing to the Boston Red Sox in the 2018 World Series.Utley posted a lackluster .213/.305/.305 triple-slash line with one home run in 87 games for this Dodgers in his final season. His career numbers, including an .823 OPS , 259 homers and 154 stolen bases in 1,937 games, better tell the story of a player who was among the National League's best at his peak. HOUSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will be back with his teammates for Game 3 of the AL Championship Series after an overnight stay in a hospital because of a stomach illness.Boston said it planned to wait until he rejoins the team in Houston on Tuesday before deciding when the lanky lefty will get back on the mound.“Everything’s fine,” manager Alex Cora said before the Red Sox held a brief workout on Monday night. “So we’ll see how he feels physically, and then after that we’ll decide what we’re going to do.”Sale was released Monday from Massachusetts General Hospital, where he had gone because of a stomach illness after he pitched in the series opener at Fenway Park. He was hospitalized Sunday night for observation and did not travel with the team to Houston.Cora said Sale will be in Houston before Game 3 of the best-of-seven series.“It’s great. I think we’re all more concerned for his personal well-being and not necessarily the team,” right fielder Mookie Betts said. “So to know that he’s OK is definitely huge.”The 29-year-old Sale struggled with his control in Boston’s 7-2 home loss to the Astros on Saturday night. The left-hander allowed two runs, four walks and hit a batter in four innings.Cora said Sale started feeling ill and was throwing up right after the game. Sale went to a hospital early Sunday morning. The illness was announced by the team during Game 2 on Sunday night Early Wynn Jersey , which the Red Sox won to even the series.“When I got to the ballpark, they told me he was there. Nothing serious. He was going to go through a battery of tests and see what was going on,” Cora said. “He’ll be here tomorrow and, hopefully, physically he’s ready to go, and we’ll decide when he pitches.”Nathan Eovaldi, the Red Sox starter for Game 3, said team members were surprised when they heard about Sale being in a hospital.“I’ve heard nothing but good things about him now Avisail Garcia Jersey ,” Eovaldi said.Sale made just one start between July 27 and Sept. 11 because of mild left shoulder inflammation, then made four starts during the rest of the regular season. He beat the Yankees in the Division Series opener and pitched one inning of relief in Game 4 as the Red Sox won the best-of-five series.Asked whether Sale lost weight because of the stomach illness, Cora jokingly responded, “Hopefully not.”

  • sLos Angeles Angles starDatum16.01.2019 04:17

Mike Trout's lingering wrist problems have landed him on the disabled list. The Angels announced Friday their all-world outfielder was placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to Aug. 6.Trout hasn't played since Aug. 1 when he jammed his wrist on an awkward slide into third base during a 7-2 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.Through 109 games Alen Hanson Jersey , Trout has put together another MVP-caliber season. He's batting .309 with 30 home runs, 60 RBI and a .624 slugging percentage. The 27-year-old leads all MLB players with a .459 on-base percentage.Trout leads all position players in WAR (7.6), per FanGraphs, but his team's lack of success on the field could torpedo his campaign for a third MVP.The Angels sit 15 games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West, and they're almost certainly headed for a fourth straight season without playoff baseball.Trout's importance to the Angels largely goes without saying. Losing him for any stretch of games may be the final nail in the coffin for Los Angeles' postseason hopes. Joe Girardi made a surprising announcement that he was pulling out of the running for multiple vacant managerial positions so that he can wait till next off-season for a more desirable destination.According to Jon Heyman , Girardi was in the running for both the Cincinnati Reds and the Texas Rangers managerial positions. He reportedly informed the Reds organization on Friday that he was no longer pursuing their manager role.Girardi surprised reds by pulling out Friday. He had a chance to win job at that point but they never got to point of talking money with him. He also pulled out of rangers derby. Industry speculation: he waiting a year on Chicago— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) October 21, 2018It's being speculated around the industry, that Girardi's intentions are to pursue either of the Chicago Cubs or White Sox next offseason.advertisingHeyman also tweeted that the Rangers had informed Girardi that the team wasn't going to move forward in the interview process with him any further. But, it was unlikely that Girardi would have pursued the position any further as well.To clarify the rangers told Girardi they were going in another direction (tho JG did pull himself out of reds derby)— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) October 21, 2018It would be very interesting if the Cubs were not to bring back their current manager Ryon Healy Jersey , Joe Madden after next season and replace him with Girardi. Under Madden, the Cubs have had three post-season appearances. They have 19 playoff victories which ranks first in Cubs franchise history.Madden also helped to end the 100 year-plus World Series curse. He has arguably been the Cubs best manager since Frank Chance, who managed the club from 1905 to 1912.advertisingWith that being said, Madden's current contract expires after next season. The Cubs and Madden have reportedly not even begun talks about any extension yet either. So, it wouldn't be out of the question to see Girardi as Madden's replacement after next season. CBS SportsGirardi definitely has a solid resume to back-up any future manager positions he may pursue. He managed the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017. Under that time , he took them to the post-season four straight seasons in a row(2009-2012).In 2009, Girardi's second season with the Yankees he helped them win their 27th World Series. The Yankees also won three AL East division titles under Girardi.advertisingEven in Girardi's last season with the Yankees, he helped them to the American League Championship Series and they finished one game sort of making it to the World Series.Regardless of whenever Girardi decides he wants to return to the MLB, any team will be acquiring a reliable and proven manager who knows how to win in this league.

So for me, there is really no discussion to be had. My job is to show up and play baseball."During the Marlins' fire sale last offseason, when Giancarlo Stanton Mickey Mantle Jersey , Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich were traded away, Realmuto's agent made it clear his client wanted to leave the organization."He would like to be traded to another organization before spring training so he has an opportunity to compete for a championship,"Jeff Berry told Barry Jackson of theMiami Herald.Berry reiterated his client's stance during an Oct. 30 appearance on MLB Network Radio (h/t, saying Realmuto told Miami's ownership and front office he won't sign an extension. The Marlins still have Realmuto under team control for two more seasons. The 27-year-old is projected to earn $6.1 million in 2019 through arbitration, per MLB Trade Rumors' Tim Dierkes.Realmuto was named to the National League All-Star team for the first time last season. The Toronto Blue Jays are set to officially part ways with manager John Gibbons, following months of speculation , according to TSN's Steve Phillips.Sources indicate that the #BlueJays will announce before today game vs #Astros that John Gibbons will not return as manager in 2019. He will likely finish the season with the club.— Steve Phillips (@StevePhillipsGM) September 26, 2018Gibbons hinted at his departure on MLB Network Radio back in August, saying he didn't want to stick around for a rebuild and that the Blue Jays would be better off with a fresh voice. That was the unofficial closure that he wasn't coming back, but Phillips all but confirmed it this morning. The 56-year-old Gibbons has compiled a 791-787 record as Blue Jays manager over two different stints. The first one began in the midst of the 2004 season and lasted until mid-season in 2008, before he was fired.advertisingA close friend of former Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopolous, Gibbons was brought back for the 2013 season. Sokolowski-USA TODAY SportsBut the Blue Jays are headed for a second consecutive losing and non-playoff season, and change was inevitable throughout the organization. President and CEO Mark Shapiro has been linked to possibly leaving the Jays and taking a job with the New York Mets, while veterans like Yangervis Solarte, Kevin Pillar and Russell Martin stand to possibly get traded in the offseason.advertisingBob Nightengale of USA Today added that Eric Wedge and Stubby Clapp are two possible candidates to take over for Gibbons. The former has managed the Cleveland Indians (2003-09), and Seattle Mariners (2011-13) Phil Rizzuto Jersey , and currently works as an advisor in player development for the Blue Jays.Clapp, a native of Windsor, Ontario, is manager of the Memphis Redbirds minor league team. With MLB teams looking to hire younger managers with deep knowledge of analytics and advanced statistics, Clapp certainly sounds out in that regard as an option for the Blue Jays.Gibbons' tenure as manager in Toronto can be best described as a rollercoaster. It had its up and downs over time, but the Blue Jays simply decided that change was necessary.advertising

  • PHILADELPHIA (AP) —The 33-year-old right-handed reliever and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a $23 million , two-year contact on Thursday. Robertson gets $10 million this year and $11 million in 2020, and the Phillies have a $12 million option for 2021 with a $2 million buyout.“The Phillies are a great organization, and they have that hunger to get back in the postseason and they’re going in the right direction,” Robertson said. “It’s a place where I’ll get a lot of opportunities to pitch in the back end of the bullpen and I don’t see any reason why we can’t get in the postseason.”Robertson went 8-3 with a 3.23 ERA and five saves in 69 games last season for the New York Yankees. He left the Yankees after the 2014 season to sign a $46 million, four-year contract with the Chicago White Sox, who traded him to New York in July 2017.An 11-year veteran and a 2011 All-Star, Robertson has appeared in at least 60 games in nine straight seasons. He could get opportunities to close in Philadelphia, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2011. Seranthony Dominguez led the Phillies with 16 saves last season, and manager Gabe Kapler likes versatility in his bullpen.“He’s going to pitch high-leverage innings for us,” Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said of Robertson. “That’s what he’s done very effectively and consistently for a long time. The fact he has experience pitching the ninth inning is very appealing for us.”Hector Neris led the Phillies with 26 saves in 2017 and had 11 last year. He’s also in the mix to pitch the ninth. It’ll likely be determined by matchups.Robertson has even better numbers against lefties than righties during his career. He has held lefties to a .188 batting average and .268 on-base percentage vs. .222 and .302 for righties.“I want to pitch whenever I can to help the team win games,” Robertson said. “If I have to pitch in the sixth, seventh, eighth or even the ninth, it doesn’t matter to me. I just want to be in the back end of the bullpen when the big outs need to get made.”Robertson represented himself in contract negotiations for the first time. Klentak said he was impressed and called it a “unique” experience talking money directly with the player.“He was very well prepared Carlos Gomez Jersey , he knew the market very well, he knew what was important to him and he was able to articulate it well and that helped us get to a deal,” Klentak said.Robertson spent parts of nine seasons in the majors with the Yankees, who selected him in the 17th round of the 2006 amateur draft. He made a pair of relief appearances against the Phillies in the 2009 World Series, allowing a two-run single to Raul Ibanez in the eighth inning of the opener and an RBI groundout to Carlos Ruiz in the third inning of Game 5.Robertson replaced Mariano Rivera after he retired following the 2013 season and had 39 saves in 2014.He’s 53-32 with a 2.88 ERA and 137 saves in 654 career appearances, all in relief.“I had a great time playing in New York. They are an excellent organization,” Robertson said, adding he spoke to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman about returning. “New York will always hold a special place in my heart. It was just time for me to go someplace else.”The Phillies have been active this offseason, acquiring shortstop Jean Segura and signing outfielder Andrew McCutchen. They finished 80-82 last year after leading the NL East in August.Klentak said the team had a “productive” meeting with Manny Machado last month.“I expect that the dialogue there will continue,” Klentak said. The team also is scheduled to meet with Bryce Harper.____ NEW YORK – Jacob deGrom may never be willing to look back on his record-setting 2018 season, at least publicly. But as the New York Mets ace gets ready for his final scheduled start of the season Wednesday night, Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker is more than willing to marvel at deGrom’s success – and how his unrewarded dominance against the Braves symbolizes a Cy Young candidacy like no other in history.DeGrom will get one more chance to burnish his National League Cy Young Award resume Wednesday night, when he takes the mound for the Mets in the middle game of a three-game series against the NL East champion Braves at Citi Field.Article continues below ...DeGrom (9-9, 1.77 ERA) is lined up to face Braves left-hander Sean Newcomb (12-9 , 4.04 ERA).The Braves earned a 7-3 win in the opener Tuesday night, when they came back from a 3-0 deficit by scoring all their runs in the seventh and eighth inning. Atlanta (89-68) entered Tuesday a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the race for the second seed and home-field advantage in the NL Division Series. DeGrom’s other-worldly statistics outside of his won-loss record appears to have him ahead of the Washington Nationals‘ Max Scherzer and the Philadelphia Phillies‘ Aaron Nola in the three-way race for the Cy Young. In addition to leading the majors in ERA and ranking second (behind Scherzer) in WHIP, strikeouts, strikeout-to-walk ratio and innings pitched, deGrom has set single-season big league records by allowing three runs or fewer in his last 28 starts and throwing a quality start in each of his last 23 outings. But deGrom wasn’t ready to try to put his season into context last Friday, when he earned the win by allowing one run over seven innings as the Mets beat the Washington Nationals, 4-2.“When I reflect on the season, it may sink in a little bit,” DeGrom told reporters. “But you’ve got to prepare for next season.”By that point, he’ll know whether or not the Mets’ remarkable lack of support cost him the Cy Young. New York has scored just 83 runs for deGrom while he’s been on the mound in his 31 starts. He has allowed three runs or fewer over at least six innings yet not recorded a win 19 times, which is also a record.Outside of the Mets (73-84), nobody knows deGrom’s hard-luck story better than the Braves. DeGrom is 0-2 despite a 1.09 ERA in five starts this season against Atlanta, which has won all five games.“You don’t like to face him, but man Sergio Romo Jersey , I love watching him compete, how he gets after it, how he competes, and the stuff – everything,” Snitker said Tuesday afternoon. “The record and all that’s probably not what he wants, but you watch that guy and how he goes out there every time. I like turning the TV on and watching him pitch.“It’s a challenge. I mean, you don’t look forward to facing a guy like that. But those guys – (that’s) what we do, competition. And he’s the best.”While deGrom will be looking to lock up the Cy Young, Newcomb will be hoping he can make a last-ditch case for a spot in the Braves’ postseason rotation.Newcomb, who is likely vying with right-hander Anibal Sanchez to be the fourth starter in the playoffs, took the loss in his previous start Sept. 16, when he allowed five runs over three innings as Atlanta fell to the Nationals, 6-4.The 25-year-old southpaw is 2-4 with a 6.52 ERA in eight starts since coming within one out of no-hitting the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 29.DeGrom is 5-5 with a 1.83 ERA in 16 career starts against the Braves. Newcomb is 2-2 with a 2.15 ERA in five starts against the Mets.

  • MILWAUKEE — have taken a big hit over the last two weeks , and even after taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field this week they sit 7 1/2 games out of wild-card contention.Still, the Pirates could go a long way in determining who does make the National League postseason field this season. They play the NL Central’s top three teams 19 more times this season, including nine meetings with the Milwaukee Brewers, who they will face in a three-game set starting Friday at Miller Park. The Brewers have not fared well against the Pirates this season. Milwaukee has dropped eight of the first 10 meetings, including a five-game sweep in Pittsburgh to close out the first half.Article continues below ...“It’s major league baseball so every team you play is a good team,” Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich said. “Their record might not be as good as other teams, but there are talented players on every team and if they put it together Bill Lee Jersey , you can lose to them on any given night.“It’s really hard to win a major league baseball game. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, it’s going to be tough. We know that. Especially down the stretch here, every single game counts the same and it has equal importance.”The Brewers got some help Wednesday when right-handed reliever Matt Albers returned from the disabled list. If he can revert to his first-half form, when he posted a 1.08 ERA through 21 games, it would be a major lift for a bullpen that’s struggled since closer Corey Knebel was moved out of the ninth-inning role because of command issues. Joakim Soria could slide into that spot if he is cleared to return this weekend, following a 15-day DL stint for a strained thigh.“I think we’re in good shape,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “I feel like we’re healthy and we’re getting healthier. So Xander Bogaerts Jersey , there’s a lot of what I feel like are good signs. “Pittsburgh will also make a roster move Friday. The team sent struggling reliever Michael Feliz to Triple-A Indianapolis during its off-day. It was the second demotion of the season for Feliz, who was acquired in the Gerrit Cole trade last January and has a 6.05 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 41 2/3 innings this season. That made him the weak link in a bullpen that has been stellar over the last few weeks as the Pirates surged back into contention, only to be stymied by an offense that all but disappeared during their recent home stand when they only scored seven runs against the Cubs and Braves.“We’re doing some things really well,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “We’re not scoring runs at the end of the day, which can complicate things and put you under a magnifying glass in every other aspect of the game. But I can’t look any of the hitters in the eye and not see fight, not see want-to, not see effort and all those other things. It’s tough sledding right now.”Right-hander Joe Musgrove (5-7 , 3.31 ERA) gets the start for the Pirates on Friday. He struck out seven while holding the Cubs to a run over seven innings to get the win in a 3-1 victory on Saturday. In his only career start against the Brewers, he did not get a decision after allowing five runs to Milwaukee in the Pirates’ 7-6 victory at PNC Park on July 15 this season.Milwaukee hands the ball to left-hander Wade Miley (2-2, 2.18) for the series opener. Miley has established himself as one of the team’s top pitchers after battling through groin and rib injuries to start the season. He has held opponents to no more than three earned runs in any of his nine starts and allowed two or fewer in eight of those contests.Miley is 2-3 with a 3.77 ERA in eight career starts against Pittaburgh, and in his only start against the Pirates this season, he gave up two runs, four hits and five walks in five innings and took the loss in a 6-3 defeat on July 12. Mitchell Layton/Getty ImagesThe Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielderAdeiny Hechavarria and cash considerations from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcherMatt Seelinger, the team announcedMonday.Hechavarria Blake Swihart Jersey , 29, is hitting .258/.289/.332 with three home runs, seven doubles and 26 RBI this season. However, the Pirates aren't likely bringingHechavarria aboard because of his bat.Rather, he's a quality defensive addition for a team that enters Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies ranked 13th among all National League clubs in fielding percentage (.982).To date, Hechavarria has tallied0.8defensive wins above replacement across 512.1 innings at shortstop. His four defensive runs saved also ranked tied for third among all qualified American League shortstops (minimum 400 innings played), according toFanGraphs.Seelinger , meanwhile, owns a 3.03 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 11 walks in 32.2 innings with Single-A West Virginia this season.Stats courtesy ofBaseball Referenceunless noted otherwise.

  • NEW YORK (AP) — for error even while having the best ERA in the majors. Finally , on Wednesday, he got the run support he needed.DeGrom struck out 10 over six innings, received rare significant run support and earned his first win in nearly two months as the New York Mets blanked the Cincinnati Reds 8-0.“Almost every game he’s pitched in, one pitch can cost him the game,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “So I feel like all of those are stressful innings.“Jacob is so relaxed, he might not feel the stress of those, but I would have to think every time a runner gets in scoring position or every time a home run hitter gets up that he steps on the gas a tad more to make sure he doesn’t even give up one run.”Brandon Nimmo tied a team record with three doubles and drove in three runs as the Mets won for the 22nd time in their last 66 games.DeGrom (6-7) ended a seven-start winless streak, allowing four hits in a 100-pitch outing and lowering his ERA from 1.85 to 1.77. He won for the first time since June 18 at Colorado, where the Mets scored 12 runs.It was his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season and 27th of his career. His first nine strikeouts were on change-ups and fastballs, and deGrom used his curveball to fan Scooter Gennett to end the sixth.“When I go out there Joey Gallo Jersey , I don’t want anybody to score,” deGrom said. “I don’t like giving up runs whether it’s 8-0 or 0-0, and that’s how I approach this year, go out there and keep guys from getting around the bases.”DeGrom allowed one earned or fewer for the 13th time this season, tying him with Justin Verlander, Blake Snell and Chris Sale for the major league lead. He held an opponent under three runs for the 20th straight time.“He’s definitely one of the best in the game,” Gennett said. “His numbers show it.”He was 0-5 with a 2.47 ERA during the winless skid, with the Mets giving deGrom a combined eight runs in those games. They scored plenty on Wednesday for deGrom, who helped himself with an RBI walk in the fourth. It was the second straight outing he drove in a run.Austin Jackson drove in two runs with a double in the second and a single in the fifth as the Mets built a 5-0 lead. Nimmo hit an RBI double in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amed Rosario in the fourth.Nimmo also added a two-run double in the eighth and Jackson capped the scoring with a single.Rosario’s sacrifice fly came after deGrom drove in his third run of the season and 15th of his career. With runners at second and third, the Reds intentionally walked Devin Mesoraco , but starter Robert Stephenson (0-1) threw four straight pitches out of the strike zone.“I wanted to throw just whatever I could throw for a strike, and that at-bat, I wasn’t able to throw any for a strike,” Stephenson said.Stephenson made his season debut for the Reds after going 6-0 in his last seven starts for Triple-A Louisville. The former first-round pick allowed three runs on three hits in four innings. The Reds wound up moving left fielder Phillip Ervin to the mound to finish the eighth.Seth Lugo, Jerry Blevins, and Robert Gsellman each pitched a scoreless inning for the Mets.METS MILESTONESNimmo’s three doubles marked the 29th time in team history it happened and the first since Yoenis Cespedes on Aug. 3, 2015, at Miami. … 3B Jose Bautista scored his 1,000th run in the fourth inning, becoming the 10th active player to reach the milestone.GOOD HITTING PITCHERWhen the Reds wanted to bat for Stephenson Ferguson Jenkins Jersey , they didn’t turn to their bench. Instead, they went to their pitching staff, sending out Michael Lorenzen. Lorenzen hit a 324-foot fly ball to left right field, lowering his average from .267 to .250. It was the fourth time he pinch hit and stayed in the game.TRAINER’S ROOMReds: 1B Joey Votto (right knee) missed his second straight game and sat out for the third time in four games. Votto was hit by a pitch by Washington RHP Ryan Madson and missed his 10th game since the start of the 2015 season. Manager Jim Riggleman said Votto is feeling better and that the slugger will play Friday. . OF Preston Tucker (toe) did not play for the second straight game. He was hit on the right foot by RHP Noah Syndergaard’s slider on Monday. Riggleman said Tucker’s foot is still sore and he will consult with trainers and undergo tests during Thursday’s off day.Mets: C Devin Mesoraco was hit in the groin while attempting to catch a deGrom pitch in the first inning but stayed in the game.UP NEXTReds: After a day off, RHP Anthony DeScalfani (6-5, 4.98 ERA) will start the opener of a three-game series against Arizona on Friday.Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (6-6, 3.89 ERA) starts the opener of a three-game series at Miami on Friday. Wheeler is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in his last seven starts. LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers recent tendency to score late and win often will probably have to continue Monday, whether they want to operate that way or not.The reason is they are facing New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom, who is putting together an historic season despite being on one of the worst teams in the majors. The Dodgers took nine days to erase a 4 1/2-game deficit in the National League West by using their late-inning rally strategy to perfection.Article continues below ...Matt Kemp moved the Dodgers into sole possession of first place in the NL West with a game-ending two-run double off Brad Boxberger to give Los Angeles a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday. Los Angeles moved into a tie atop the division Saturday when Kemp hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning. The Dodgers won Friday on late home runs from Enrique Hernandez and Justin Turner.“It’s the coaches, the players and just the hyper-focus on each day ,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Sunday’s victory. It’s hard to not scoreboard watch and feel that 4 1/2 (games) is not a big number to (overcome). Our goal each day was to just play good baseball.”In order to stay in front in the NL West on their own terms, though, the Dodgers will have to get through deGrom. The right-hander is on a march to possibly win the National League Cy Young Award, even if his 8-8 record seems to suggest otherwise. He will enter with a 1.68 ERA, the third best since 1968.A pair of Mets records could belong to deGrom exclusively by the time Monday’s game ends. He currently has 24 consecutive starts of three earned runs or less, tied with Dwight Gooden (1985) for the longest run in franchise history. His 19 consecutive quality starts are also tied for the most in team history.“He continues to do the job,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said, according to “He’s just an all-around player, and the best pitcher in baseball at this point.”The Dodgers can hang their optimism on the fact that the Mets are somehow just 11-16 in games deGrom has started. They can also feel good about their eight victories over their past nine games, as they aim for their sixth consecutive NL West title. At 61-75 Ryan Rua Jersey , the Mets are out of contention in the NL East, but deGrom still has plenty to pitch for. His main competition for a Cy Young Award appears to come from the Nationals’ Max Scherzer, the Rockies’ Kyle Freeland and the Phillies’ Aaron Nola. The competition at present, though, is a Dodgers offense that has surged thanks to hot bats from Manny Machado (nine home runs in 41 games with the Dodgers) and Justin Turner (.402 batting average, 1.213 OPS in August). The Dodgers will call on Alex Wood to start opposite deGrom. The left-hander has worked his way through nagging leg injuries this season but has still managed to post an 8-6 record with a 3.42 ERA.Formerly a member of the NL East when he pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Wood knows the Mets well having made nine starts against them in his six seasons. Wood is 1-3 against New York with a 3.83 ERA.In seven starts against the Dodgers in his career, deGrom still does not have a victory over the West Coast foe. He has a 3.43 ERA against them over 44 2/3 innings.

  • LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Freese from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night in exchange for a minor leaguer. The deal was completed just ahead of the deadline for traded players to be eligible for postseason play. Freese hit .282 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 94 games for the Pirates.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Freese would be used off the bench against left-handing pitching.“Veteran presence , offensive, great clubhouse guy,” Roberts said.Starting third baseman Justin Turner was effusive upon learning of the trade after the Dodgers edged NL West-leading Arizona 3-2.“Definitely happy to have him,” he said. “He’s a professional hitter. I love watching him take his at-bats.”In a statement, Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington said it was a “difficult decision” to trade Freese. Huntington said the move was made to give Freese an opportunity to pursue a World Series championship while giving opportunities to Pittsburgh’s younger players.Freese won a World Series title in 2011 with St. Louis. He hit .545 and had 12 hits in the National League Championship Series, earning MVP honors. He was also named World Series MVP.The move brings him back to Southern California. Freese played two seasons for the Angels in 2014 and ’15.In exchange for the 35-year-old veteran, the Dodgers sent minor league infielder Jesus Manuel Valdez to the Pirates. Valdez spent his first professional season playing for the Dominican Summer League Dodgers, batting .230. NEW YORK (AP) — Sure, Julio Teheran had perfected his home run celebration. Plenty of times, clowning with Atlanta pitchers during batting practice. He just never got to trot it out.Teheran hit his first big league homer to begin Atlanta’s comeback Jason Heyward Jersey , and Nick Markakis homered in the 10th inning to send the Braves over the New York Mets 5-4 Sunday.Long a Mets nemesis on the mound, Teheran found a new way to torment them. He stepped up in the fifth as a career .153 hitter, clubbed a high fastball over the left-field wall, and took a leisurely jog.“You don’t know when you’re going to hit one,” he said, adding: “It’s a homer, you enjoy it.”Now in his eighth season in the majors, the two-time All-Star said his last home run came in high school. Not much at the plate since then.“I didn’t feel like running the bases,” he kidded. He got the ball, too , a nice souvenir on an afternoon when a lot of Atlanta players contributed.Markakis finished with four hits and took over the NL lead from teammate Freddie Freeman. Ender Inciarte also homered and Ronald Acuna Jr. delivered a key single as the Braves posted their sixth victory in seven games. The NL East contenders took three of four at Citi Field for their first winning road series in more than a month.Teheran continued to have control trouble and walked four in 5 2/3 innings. His solo home run off rookie Corey Oswalt came with Atlanta trailing 3-0.“He kept us in the game. He got us back in the game,” manager Brian Snitker said.Devin Mesoraco hit a tying home run in the Mets ninth — he was standing at second base when a replay review showed the ball cleared the wall, making it 4-all.“I couldn’t quite tell the first view. But then the second one, I knew it was,” Mesoraco said.A.J. Minter (4-2), who had been 8 for 8 in save chances this year, got the win despite giving up Mesoraco’s solo drive with one out.Braves rookie Jesse Biddle worked around Wilmer Flores‘ leadoff double in the 10th for his first big league save. Jose Bautista, in an 0-for-23 slump, and Todd Frazier grounded out with Flores on third to end it.New York rookie Tyler Bashlor (0-1) was tagged for Markakis’ 13th homer with one out. The Mets have lost five of six, and fell to 4-12 against Atlanta this season.Acuna hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth that put Atlanta ahead 4-3.The Braves pulled off an unusual double play to stay close in the sixth. The Mets led 3-1 when Flores opened with a single and went to third on Michael Conforto’s single. Bautista hit a hard grounder to third baseman Johan Camargo Ben Zobrist Jersey , who got a quick forceout. Second baseman Ozzie Albies alertly saw Flores breaking for the plate and threw him out.Recently acquired Austin Jackson hit his second homer in eight games for the Mets.BAUTISTA’S STRUGGLESBautista went 0 for 5, striking out three times, hitting into that odd double play and stranding the tying run at third in the 10th. He’s batting .198 overall this year. He played 12 games for Atlanta in May and helped Teheran earn a win with a three-run homer at Wrigley Field.“He’s been chasing a little bit more, the balls in the dirt. The good breaking balls, he seems to not recognize it as well, at this moment,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “And the walks just aren’t coming for him. So just a few things, he’s kind of off-kilter.”TRAINER’S ROOMMets: Right-handed reliever Anthony Swarzak was put on the disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder. The move was retroactive to Saturday, and RHP Jacob Rhame was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. The 32-year-old Swarzak is 0-2 with three saves and a 6.00 ERA in 22 games during his first season with the Mets. He missed about two months earlier this year with a strained oblique.UP NEXTBraves: After a day off, Atlanta plays a day-night doubleheader at Washington. LHP Max Fried (1-4 , 3.38 ERA) starts the day game and LHP Sean Newcomb (10-5, 3.23) goes at night. Newcomb’s previous outing was last Sunday — he came within one strike of a no-hitter against the Dodgers and was pulled after 134 pitches. Following the game, the 25-year-old apologized for racist, homophobic and sexist tweets he sent as a teenager.Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 2.98) starts vs. RHP Homer Bailey (1-8, 5.87) and the Reds. Former Mets ace Matt Harvey, traded to Cincinnati in May, returns to Citi Field. He’s not scheduled to pitch in the three-game series.

  • BOSTON — in the first two games of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees or Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park.Games 1 and 2 are set for Oct. 5 and 6 and the two left-handers are in line to make those starts — both chasing the first postseason wins (as starters) of their proud careers.Club president Dave Dombrowski revealed on MLB Network Radio that Sale will “be scheduled to start (the opener) Curtis Granderson Jersey , I don’t think it’ll surprise anybody, the first day of the postseason. I don’t mean to usurp anybody’s announcements, but I think it’s one of those that have been pretty clear.”Article continues below ...Price is a sure bet to start Game 2, especially if it’s the Yankees, thus keeping him from pitching at Yankee Stadium, his house of horrors. If Oakland is the opposition, the door would be open to break up the lefties by having Rick Porcello throw in Game 2.For now, it’s all about getting tuned up, and after Tuesday night’s game was rained out, Price will start the opener of Wednesday’s day/night doubleheader and Sale will work the nightcap. The Orioles, who have already tied the franchise record for losses in a season, will counter with rookie Ryan Meisinger (2-0, 4.50 ERA) in the opener with the Game 2 starter yet to be determined for the starter-short Orioles, who can’t get to Sunday fast enough. Jimmy Yacabonis had been scheduled to start Tuesday.Price is 2-8 lifetime in the postseason. But both wins came in relief, where the left-hander has done some dynamic work over the years. Sale was 0-2 with an 8.38 ERA in two starts against the Houston Astros in last year’s ALDS.There has been talk — all from the outside — of Price again working out of the bullpen, but there was no indication that would happen.Sale (12-4, 2.00 ERA) is working his way back from two stints on the disabled list from left shoulder inflammation. He has built up from 26 to 42 to 73 pitches, and the hope for this outing in 90-plus.On Monday night, the Red Sox recorded their franchise-record 106th win and locked up home field advantage throughout the postseason with a 6-2 victory over Baltimore.Price , who has more trouble pitching in Yankee Stadium than he does anywhere else, suffered his first loss since the All-Star break last time out, allowing three homers in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees. That dropped Price to 5-1 since the break.Price, 15-7 with a 3.53 ERA overall on the season, is 2-0 against the Orioles in 2018 — two earned runs, 18 strikeouts in 15 innings — and 14-5 with a 2.67 in 27 career starts against the Birds.Sale is 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three starts against Baltimore this season, 7-2 with a 2.49 lifetime.Nathan Eovaldi, in line to start Game 4 of the ALDS, was the winner Monday (10 strikeouts), saying, “I definitely feel like we’re the team to beat.”As far as the club breaking a record that was set in 1912, manager Alex Cora said, “It’s unreal. You think about the history of the game and the history of this franchise. To be part of this, I can’t even explain it. Obviously it’s something where we should call time out and enjoy this one.”Monday’s loss was Baltimore’s 111th, which ties the 1939 St. Louis Browns for the most in franchise history.Adam Jones, who refused a deal that could have sent him to a contender at the trade deadline, electing to play out his contract with the Orioles, was in left field Monday night — his first time at the position since Sept. 30, 2007. He was a Seattle Mariner at the time.“It’s coming to an end here. The season ends. My contract ends Yangervis Solarte Jersey ,” said Jones. “I’m an optimistic person. You never know what could happen. You always got to keep your options open.”Yefry Ramirez, in line to start Wednesday’s finale, won’t make that appearance because of a cut on his hand. The Orioles are hoping to see him pitch before Sunday’s season finale. The Red Sox are 15-2 against the Orioles this season. He has a 3.28 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 46.2 innings.Charlie Morton (15-3, 3.13 ERA, 201 K, 167.0 IP) and Rick Porcello (17-7, 4.28 ERA, 190 K, 191.1 IP) are the scheduled starters for Game 4, and both pitchers have enjoyed their fair share of recent postseason success.Porcello picked up the win in his ALDS start by allowing one run in 5.2 innings in the Game 4 clincher.Morton didn't take a turn in the ALDS as the Astros swept the Cleveland Indians, but he was instrumental in the team's World Series success last year. He posted a 1.74 ERA and 0.58 WHIP with 11 strikeouts in 10.1 innings in one start and one relief appearance. Both teams have stacked offenses, so if one of those back-of-the-rotation starters can turn in a dominant start, it could swing the entire series. The ace matchup of Justin Verlander and Chris Sale will be on tap again for Game 5, and the pitching decisions from there will be dictated by who is on top in the series. We're just two games in, but this series already has the makings of a seven-game classic. • LOS ANGELES (AP) —with play-by-play announcer Charley Steiner , who will work a reduced schedule in 2019 at his request. The team said Monday the deal extends through the 2021 season. Steiner, who is 69, is entering his 15th season with the Dodgers.Steiner says he’s trying to keep pace with Father Time, Mother Nature and the road, all of which he points out have “never lost a battle.”The Dodgers have hired Tim Neverett to handle play-by-play for an unspecified number of games on SportsNet LA while TV announcer Joe Davis works national assignments and on AM 570 radio while Steiner is off.Neverett worked the last three years as the radio play-by-play voice of the Boston Red Sox, who beat the Dodgers in the World Series in October.Previously, the 52-year-old announcer spent seven years as the radio and TV voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Neverett had other broadcasting jobs in Denver, including with the Rockies, and in Las Vegas, where he called games for the Dodgers’ and San Diego Padres’ Triple-A teams. BOSTON (AP) — The AL wild-card game will be in the Bronx Joe Maddon Jersey , where the New York Yankees bats have always felt at home. The Yankees cleared the Fenway fences four times on Friday night to tie the major league single-season home run record, clinching home-field advantage for the upcoming one-game playoff against Oakland with a 11-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox.The win in the opener of the three-game series settled the AL’s last remaining postseason question with two games to go. The Yankees will host the Athletics on Wednesday for the right to play Boston in the divisional round.“That’s an exhale right there, for the moment,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. “Now we can start working on getting ready as best as we can for that Wednesday game. It’s nice to finish that off.”The Red Sox, who clinched the best record in baseball with a franchise-record 107 wins, were hoping to make things difficult for their archrivals — and the A’s, too — by forcing the winner of the wild-card game to fly cross-country next week. The ALDS begins in Boston on Friday.Instead, the Yankees will sleep in their own beds, and play in the park where they were 53-28 while hitting 144 home runs.“It’s not the end-all, be-all by any means ,” Boone said. “But when push comes to shove you want to be at home.”Reigning Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge hit his first homer since coming off the disabled list Sept. 14, and Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks and Luke Voit also homered to give the Yankees 264 home runs for the season. That matches the mark set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.AUDITIONSJ.A. Happ (17-6) pitched three perfect innings and allowed just one hit through five. Staked to an 8-0 lead, he loaded the bases in the sixth for Steve Pearce’s grand slam but got Rafael Devers on a groundout to end the inning. In all, Happ allowed four runs on four hits and two walks, striking out seven in six innings. He would be on regular rest for the wild-card game.“I’d love to get the nod,” he said. “But I think we’re going to feel good with whoever is out there.”LONG BALLSSanchez homered to lead off the third, just his second homer and fourth hit of any kind in two weeks. Hicks hit a three-run shot in New York’s six-run fourth. Voit hit a solo shot in the seventh and Judge hit his 27th of the year in the eighth to make it 11-4.Boone said he wouldn’t have expected to set home run records in a season without Judge and Giancarlo Stanton hitting 50 apiece. Judge battled injuries after hitting 52 as a rookie; Stanton dropped from 59 to 37.Twelve players hit 10 or more homers and six topped 20.“We’re getting a lot of production from a lot of guys,” Boone said.LATE THREATBoston scored once and loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth against Dellin Betances, but Eduardo Nunez lined out to second to end it. The Red Sox loaded the bases in the ninth before Zach Britton walked Xander Bogaerts to score a run and cut the deficit to 11-6.But Pearce grounded out on a 3-2 pitch to third base to end it Albert Almora Jr Jersey , giving the Yankees their 99th win.“I loved the way we fought,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Got to Betances; got to Britton. We had the big inning against Happ.”PASSING THE MESSAGEPearce is 6 for 32 with six homers against Happ in his career. Asked why he’s struggled so much to keep Pearce in the park, Happ said with a smile, “I don’t know, why don’t you go over there and ask him why it’s so easy for him. I’d like to know what he says.”(When that was relayed to Pearce, he also smiled and said, “It’s not easy. He’s a good pitcher.”)FOR THE RECORDRed Sox left-hander Brian Johnson (4-5) allowed two runs in three innings and left with a 2-0 deficit. William Cuevas came out to start the fourth and gave up six runs on six hits and a walk while getting just one out.DOUBLING UPMiguel Andujar’s fourth-inning double was his 44th of the season, tying Joe DiMaggio for the record by a Yankees rookie.Second base umpire Andy Fletcher appeared to hurt his calf while calling Andujar safe on the play. The game was completed using three umpires. According to Major League Baseball, Fletcher sustained a muscular injury and will need further evaluation but will likely be replaced for the rest of the series.TRAINER’S ROOMYankees: SS Didi Grigorius returned to the lineup for the first time since Saturday because of torn cartilage in his right wrist. Hicks also returned to the lineup; he missed two games with tightness in his left hamstring.UP NEXTRHP Lance Lynn (9-10) is scheduled to face RHP Nathan Eovaldi.

ANAHEIM , Calif. (AP) — Blake Parker with one out in the eighth inning, spoiling the Los Angeles Angels‘ bid for an unprecedented no-hitter against the Texas Rangers.Los Angeles was closing in on the record for most pitchers used in a no-hitter. The Houston Astros set the mark with six pitchers while shutting down the Yankees in 2003. Roy Oswalt started that game but was injured in the first inning. The Mariners matched that record in 2012.Jim Johnson opened Tuesday night’s game with 1 1/3 innings, and Noe Ramirez, Hansel Robles, Cam Bedrosian, Justin Anderson and Jose Alvarez followed with no-hit ball. Parker retired Willie Calhoun to start the eighth before Kiner-Falefa lined a clean single into right field. The Angels led 1-0 through seven innings.Unlike the Astros in their no-hit bid, the Angels planned to make this one a bullpen game Mallex Smith Jersey , following a trend started by the Tampa Bay Rays this season of using relievers as openers. Los Angeles is using the strategy to cover for an injury-decimated rotation that is without Shohei Ohtani, Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs and more. Manager Mike Scioscia used four bullpen games in August. CLEVELAND — With a chance to clinch a third consecutive American League Central title, the Cleveland Indians will host the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Progressive Field. The Indians’ magic number for clinching the division is one. Even if the Indians lose Saturday, they would clinch the title if Minnesota loses to Kansas City. With a 15-game lead over the second-place Twins, the Indians will obviously clinch the division at some point. The only question is when. This will be the fourth time the Indians have made it to the postseason in the six seasons since Terry Francona became manager in 2013.Article continues below ...“We take a lot of pride in that,” Francona said. “It’s hard to do. Not everything goes your way , but we’ve found a way to be good enough, and done it in a good way.”Whenever the Indians clinch the division, Francona said it’s a celebration worth having, no matter how big the margin.“I want our guys to enjoy it because it’s really hard,” he said. “But then you turn the page and it’s ‘What’s next?'”The Indians will likely play the Houston Astros in the Division Series, but what’s next is Saturday’s home game against the Tigers in which Cleveland right-hander Mike Clevinger will face Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer.Clevinger (11-8, 3.16 ERA) will be making his 30th start of the season. His last start was a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Sunday in which he pitched six innings Rob Refsnyder Jersey , allowing three runs and four hits, with nine strikeouts and two walks. That is Clevinger’s only loss in his last eight starts, during which he has a 4-1 record and a 2.40 ERA.Clevinger’s last start against the Tigers was a 2-1 loss on July 28, when he pitched five innings, giving up just two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. In two starts against Detroit this year, Clevinger is 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA. He has made eight career appearances (seven starts) against the Tigers and is 4-2 with a 2.52 ERA.Fulmer (3-11, 4.56) has had a tough year. He hasn’t won a game since June 14. In nine starts since then , he is 0-6 with a 5.23 ERA.Fulmer’s last start against Cleveland came June 8. He got no decision in a 4-1 Tigers loss. In that game, Fulmer pitched seven innings, allowing one run and five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. In two starts against the Indians this year, Fulmer is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA. In seven career starts against Cleveland, he is 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA. In five career starts at Progressive Field, Fulmer is 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA.The Tigers won the first game of the series Friday night, snapping their four-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory that also halted their 10-game losing streak at Progressive Field. Two of Cleveland’s six hits were by third baseman Josh Donaldson Joey Wendle Jersey , who in the sixth inning, in his first game at Progressive Field as a member of the Indians, belted his first home run in a Cleveland uniform. The Indians acquired Donaldson in a trade with Toronto on Aug. 31.Donaldson will not play in Saturday’s game as the Indians are easing him back into the lineup after he missed 3 1/2 months earlier this season with a strained calf.

  • KANSAS CITY Ronald Acuna Jr. Jersey , Mo. (AP) — and Royals manager Ned Yost told his recently recalled rookie catcher to help get pitcher Jorge Lopez through one more inning. So when Viloria headed to the bench after the seventh, that task successfully complete, he plopped down and began to relax. Puzzled, Yost looked at him and asked, “What are you doing?”“You said,” Viloria replied, “get him through one more inning.”Yost didn’t mean Viloria’s day was done, though. And when he went to bat in the eighth, Viloria came through with his first big league hit, a two-run double that put a nice cap on a game Lopez and the Royals dominated. The 9-1 rout of the Baltimore Orioles wrapped up a three-game sweep of the only team in the majors with a worse record than Kansas City’s own.“It feels great,” said Lopez, who allowed Jonathan Villar’s home run in the first inning but little else while striking out a career-high eight. “The defense was good and the offense has been hot.”As for Viloria, the kid behind the plate who had just arrived from Class-A Wilmington?“That kid’s something special,” Lopez said. “Communication, the game plan, we were right on it.”It was the first win for Lopez , who was part of the late-July deal with Milwaukee for third baseman Mike Moustakas, since Sept. 29, 2015, when he was still with the Brewers.“That’s why he was so well-thought-of and sought-after in trade,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “The things David (Hess) has done when he’s successful, that young man did today.”Alcides Escobar also had three hits and an RBI as Kansas City piled up 14 hits, its sixth straight game with at least 10 and the longest such streak since June 24-29, 2016.Most of the damage came against Hess (3-9), who allowed five runs on nine hits and a trio of errors — all of which came after the Baltimore pitcher’s own mistakes during a dreadful third inning. The first error came with nobody out, when Hess threw the ball away trying to pick Merrifield off first base. Then, with two down, Hess tried to chase Jorge Bonifacio back to second and the ball squirreled away again. Bonifacio headed for third and second baseman Breyvic Valera tried to throw him out there, but the ball bounced away for yet another error that allowed Bonifacio to score.“The toughest thing is giving them extra bases and extra outs to work with,” Hess said. “That’s something that I’ve prided myself on throughout the minor leagues and up here as well. I’ve been able to field my position well and do what we need to do to keep guys honest out there.“I mean, they beat me at that today,” he said. “It’s something that we’re going to learn from.”STATS AND STREAKSThe Royals have won five straight, all in come-from-behind fashion Preston Tucker Jersey , their best stretch since July 19-28, 2017. … Merrifield reached base for a career-best 22nd straight game. He also stole his 30th base, matching Seattle’s Dee Gordon for the AL lead. … The Orioles were swept for the third time in four series. … Baltimore has lost seven straight road games.FIRST PITCHRoyals vice president Mike Swanson threw out the ceremonial first pitch to honor his 40 years in baseball. Swanson’s mother, Betty, spent nearly four decades working for the Royals and Chiefs, while her son has worked for the Rockies, Padres and Diamondbacks along with his time in Kansas City.CLOSER CONCERNSShowalter said he will try several options in the closer role after Mychael Givens blew another save Saturday night. “You’ve got to get people out, and pitch when you’re asked and take advantage of the opportunity,” Showalter said, “including Mike and some other guys.”TRAINER’S ROOMOrioles: RHP Pedro Araujo (right elbow strain) will not pitch again this season. He’s been on the DL since June 11. “He’s going to be fine, I think, for next year,” Showalter said, “but I don’t think he’ll pitch in September. I don’t see any of the feedback that fits that scenario.”Royals: OF Jorge Soler (fractured left toe) experienced a setback in his rehab and will likely shut down for the remainder of the season, Yost said. Soler went on the DL on June 16, when he was hitting .265 with nine homers and 28 RBIs.UP NEXTThe Orioles head to Seattle for three games beginning Monday night, when LHP Josh Rogers (1-0 , 5.40 ERA) is on the mound. The Royals begin a trip to Cleveland and Minnesota with RHP Jakob Junis (7-12, 4.53) taking the hill against the Indians on Monday night. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — If this was it for Zack Wheeler, he finished strong and — probably most importantly — healthy.Wheeler pitched seven solid innings for his career-best 12th win in what may have been his final start of the season, Michael Conforto had a career-high six RBIs and the New York Mets beat the fading Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 on Monday night.Wheeler (12-7) allowed four runs and three hits to become the first Mets pitcher since Steve Trachsel in 2001 to record nine wins after the All-Star Game. Since the break, the right-hander is 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 11 starts.“Probably the best pitcher in baseball the last 1½ months,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said.New York was eliminated from playoff contention Monday night when St. Louis beat Atlanta. Callaway wants to be cautious with Wheeler and said he would discuss with Mets management whether he makes another start. The right-hander is three innings shy of his career best, the 185 1/3 he threw in 2014 before injuries halted his promising career. Wheeler didn’t pitch at all in the majors in 2015 or 2016 following Tommy John surgery, and was limited to 86 1/3 innings last season due to a stress reaction in his pitching arm.“We want to make sure we’re taking care of the player,” Callaway said.Wheeler, who opened the season in the minors, is relieved to be pitching and feeling so well.“It’s been smooth sailing for the most part this year,” he said.Asked if he wanted to continue to pitch, Wheeler said, “Still feeling good. It’s not my call. I’ll leave it up to those guys.”Conforto, after a rocky start, also is feeling good. The Mets outfielder already has 22 RBIs this month, giving him 75 for the season.“If I put the work in and stayed positive Adam Jones Jersey , I knew at some point it would come around,” he said. “It feels like I’m not searching so much. It took five months I guess, but I finally got it.”Conforto had a two-run single in the fifth, an RBI double in the seventh and a three-run homer in the ninth for the Mets, who have won seven of 11 and are 26-17 over their last 43 games. Conforto has 45 RBIs since the All-Star break, second-most in the NL over that span behind Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich.“This is the Michael Conforto everyone wants to see,” Callaway said. “This is one of the better players in the league when he’s going like this.”The Phillies, as a team, have been heading in the opposite direction.J.P. Crawford had a three-run triple for the Phillies, whose slim playoff chances took another hit. Philadelphia is 6½ games back of first-place Atlanta in the NL East and five games out of the wild card. The Phillies have lost eight of 11.Conforto’s two-out double in the seventh off Tommy Hunter (4-3) snapped a 4-all tie and helped the Mets continue their mastery of Philadelphia.Wheeler didn’t allow a hit until Wilson Ramos‘ leadoff single in the fifth that caromed off the glove of diving second baseman Jeff McNeil and into short right field.
