CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Bobcats have relied heavily on Al Jefferson to put them in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. On Saturday night, they proved they could win without their veteran centre having a big night. "It shows that we have other guys that can step up," point guard Kemba Walker said. With Jefferson double-teamed most of the night, Walker elevated his game, pouring in 31 points to help the Bobcats defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 92-89 for their fourth win in five nights. Charlotte is 4-0 since the All-Star break, marking its longest winning streak since March 2011. The Bobcats won despite Jefferson being held to just six points -- tying a season-low -- on 2-of-13 shooting. Jefferson came in having scored 29 or more points in eight of his last 11 games and at least 20 points in 17 of the last 19. The Bobcats used an 18-3 run in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game and then held on down the stretch with Walker making four free throws in the final 25 seconds to snap Memphis four-game win streak. It was the second straight night Walker hit four free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal a victory. "I shoot so many free throws in practice Im just thinking, "Hey, make them," said Walker, who was 10 of 10 from the foul line. Charlotte had lost the second night of a back-to-back eight straight times before winning two this week. "To win four in a row against good teams and to play this well in a game like that that was hard fought, you have to feel good about it," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. But now the Bobcats face a four-game stretch against the NBAs four best teams -- San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Miami and Indiana -- with the first three games on the road. The Grizzlies were led by Mike Conley, who had 16 points, but twice missed 3-point attempts when he had a chance to tie the game on Memphis final possession. Marc Gasol had 15 points, and Zac Randolph had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which fell two games behind Dallas in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Bobcats trailed 66-64 early in the fourth quarter when Anthony Tolliver got hot from the outside, igniting an 18-3 run with three 3-pointers to give Charlotte a 13-point lead. Tolliver finished with nine points. The Grizzlies battled back to take the lead when Conley knocked down an 18-footer with 51 seconds left. But Josh McRoberts sank two free throws to put the Bobcats ahead for good with 38 seconds left. Conley missed a jumper on the other end and then fouled Walker as he was heading up the court. Walker made two free throws to push the lead to three with 24 seconds left. Gasol answered with an inside layup, but Walker hit two more free throws with 10.7 seconds left to push the lead back to three. Conley had two open looks in the final 6 seconds, but couldnt connect. "We wanted to win, but the Charlotte Bobcats were the aggressors," Memphis guard Tony Allen said. "They were physical. Coach told us before the game that their talent doesnt jump out at you, but what does is just how hard they play. Theres no excuse because they were the aggressors and they pretty much outworked us tonight." The Grizzlies game plan was to make sure Jefferson didnt beat them, aggressively double-teaming the 6-foot-10, 289-pound centre every time he touched the ball in the low post. They limited Jefferson to four points on 1-of-6 shooting in the first half and held Charlotte to 39 per cent shooting to build a 48-42 halftime lead. "Hes shooting it up and theyre going to him a lot," Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said. "We just kept staying in front of him and making his shots tough." Jefferson picked up his third foul with 2:52 left in the first half -- a call that didnt sit well with Bobcats coach Steve Clifford, who was slapped with a technical foul for arguing. It was his seventh technical foul of the season. NOTES: Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson and former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad were at the game. ... The deal was confirmed by the team on Tuesday night. Earlier in the day, outfielder Jason Heyward and the Braves agreed to a $13.3 million, two-year contract. Heyward and Freeman had filed for salary arbitration last month. The 24-year-old Freeman was an All-Star last year when he hit .319 with 23 homers and 109 RBIs. He matched his career high in home runs and set highs in batting average and RBIs which finishing fifth in NL MVP voting. He has topped 20 home runs in three straight seasons. "Freddie has established himself as one of the best young talents in the game," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "We are excited to sign one of our own homegrown players to a contract that will keep him in a Braves uniform for the next eight seasons." Closer Craig Kimbrel is the Braves only player left in arbitration. Heyward, also 24, and Freeman are key members of the Braves core of young stars. Kimbrel, shortstop Andrelton Simmons, outfielder Justin Upton and starting pitchers Julio Teheran and Mike Minor are 26 or younger. Evan Gattis, 27, is replacing Brian McCann as the starting catcher. Heyward was happy to avoid arbitration. "In my head it basically says to me, lets go play some baseball," he said. Heyward is coming off an injury-filled season, and Wren said the relative lack of playing time complicated the arbitration process and helped make the two-year contract possible. Heyward hit .254 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs in a career-low 104 games during his fourth season with the Braves. He had an appendectomy on April 22 and broke his jaw on Aug. 21 when he was hit by a pitch from New York Mets left-hander Jon Niese. "Last year was such a tough year physically, through no fault of his own, with the appendectomy and getting hit in the face," Wren said. "So it also made it tough for both sides in an arbitration situation because its hard to pin a number when youre comparing to players who played a lot more." Heywardd said he has moved past his injuries.dddddddddddd "Physically, I feel great, being 24 years old and being blessed with some genetics to go along with that," he said. "Im growing up still in this game and Im looking forward to what my body is going to allow me to do going forward." Heywards deal calls for a $1 million signing bonus, payable in equal installments on May 1 and July 1, and salaries of $4.5 million this year and $7.8 million in 2015. The 2015 salary would escalate based on a points system for 2014 accomplishments, going up $500,000 for 20 points and then by $25,000 for each additional point. Heyward would earn 10 points each for 502 plate appearances, All-Star game selection, a Gold Glove award, a Silver Slugger award and finishing 11th-to-20th in MVP voting. He would receive 15 points for 6th-to-10th in MVP, 25 points for third-to-fifth and 35 points for first or second. Heyward enjoyed his best season in 2012, when he hit .269 and set career highs with 27 homers, 82 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. Heywards injuries did not prevent him from showcasing his versatility. A 2012 Gold Glove winner in right field, Heyward started 20 games in centre last year. He spent most of the season hitting second in the order before he was moved to the leadoff spot by manager Fredi Gonzalez on July 27. Over his next 22 games, Heyward hit .349 with five homers, 15 RBIs and 23 runs. Heyward is projected as Atlantas leadoff hitter. "He provides a great presence," Wren said. "The one thing we saw, especially after Fredi moved him to the leadoff spot, it allowed him to utilize his speed, it allowed him to utilize his ability to get on base even to a greater degree. "I think other teams felt pressure from the very first pitch of the game, because all of a sudden now youve got a 6-foot-6, 230-pound leadoff hitter that can do some damage from the get-go. That came back to us time and time again, that theres no let up. It starts right away." Heyward is eligible for free agency after the 2015 season. He had asked for a raise from $3.65 million to $5.5 million in arbitration and had been offered $5.2 million. GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer knows what his teams personality has become. And it has nothing to do with his side of the ball. "Were a tough, grind-it-out defensive team," he said. That was apparent on the first play from scrimmage against Houston on Sunday, when the Cardinals forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. It was a sign of what would come in the second half. The Cardinals turned up the defensive pressure and sent the Texans to their franchise-record seventh straight loss, 27-24 Sunday. Palmer threw two touchdown passes and Arizona held on despite a late fumble. The Texans (2-7) were without coach Gary Kubiak, who collapsed on the sideline against Indianapolis last Sunday night with what was diagnosed as a mini-stroke. Defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips is filling in as interim coach. "All in all it seems like the same theme," Phillips said. "Team is playing tremendously hard but not enough plays. One play here, one play there, and they really dominated us in the second half on their defensive side of the ball." Arizona (5-4) got off to a quick start when linebacker John Abraham knocked the ball out of quarterback Case Keenums arm and Matt Shaughnessy returned it 6 yards for a touchdown only 14 seconds into the game. The Texans led 17-14 at the break, but managed just 41 yards in the final two quarters "As a defence, we just told ourselves 17 is the max," linebacker Daryl Washington said. "No more points to be scored. Lets play nasty, lets play dirty." Keenum threw three touchdown passes, two on remarkable catches by Andre Johnson. J.J. Watt forced two fumbles, recovering both of them for Houston. The second one set up Johnsons 5-yard TD catch that cut the lead to three with 4:34 to play. "We made good adjustments," Arizona coach Bruce Arians said of the second half. "The running game was kind of gone. We felt if we could get them in a one-dimension game we could get after the quarterback, and we were able to do that." Palmer completed 20 of 32 for 241 yards. Keenum was 22 of 43 for 201 yards no interceptions, but was just 7 for 17 for 42 yards in the second half. Arizona reeled off 13 consecutive points and Palmers 19-yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts put Arizona up 27-17 with 6:42 to play. The Cardinals, coming off a bye, had trouble holding on. Rashard Mendenhall was stripped of the ball by Watt in a crowd on a run up the middle and the standout Houston lineman recovered at the Arizona 5. On third down, Johnson gathered in Keenums pass and was able to get both feet inbounds for the touchdown. He had scored on a similar catch in the first quarter. "Those were two of the best catches I have ever seen in my life," Keenum said. "You cant even describe it. You have to watch it to see how awesome those catches are. " Houston got the ball back with just over two minutes to play but, at third-and-3 at the 35, Keenum threw two incompletions. Jerraud Powers knocked the ball away from receiver DeAndre Hopkins on fourth down to seal the win. After his first-play miscue, Keenum completed 4 of 4 for 44 yards in an eight-play, 49-yard drive. Johnson got his left foot down then barely dragged his right foot inbounds on a 7-yard touchdown catch and it was 7-all. Arizona regained the lead with its only touchdown drive of the first half. Recently signed tight end Jake Ballard had a 15-yard catch, his first reception since 2011, and Rob Housler got his first pro touchdown catch on a 12-yard screen pass to put the Cardinals up 14-7 with 13:57 left in the half. It was Palmers 200th career touchdown pass. But Keenum responded, going 5 for 6 for 55 yards in a nine-play, 80-yard TD drive. Keenum threw 2 yards to wide open tight end Ryan Griffin for the touchdown that tied it at 14-14 with 9:37 left in the half. Arizona was pinned deep in its own territory after the subsequent kickoff and Palmer tried to throw long to Housler. But D.J. Swearinger intercepted, setting up Randy Bullocks 48-yard field goal that gave Houston its first lead, 17-14, with 6:31 to go in the half. Arizona committed another turnover late in the second quarter. With less than a minute left in the half, Watt knocked the ball out of Palmers hands and recovered at the Cardinals 22. Houston couldnt move it from there, and Justin Bethel blocked Bullocks 40-yard field goal attempt. Bethel has two blocked field goals this season. Arizona tied it at 17 on Jay Feelys 35-yard field goal with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Palmers 26-yard pass to Housler gave Arizona a first-and-goal at the Houston 5 in the final seconds of the third quarter. Feelys 21-yarder put Arizona back on top 20-17 entering the fourth quarter. BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Waiting and waiting for an equalizer, the tension showed on the faces of the Belgium players as the second half wore on in the countrys first World Cup match in 12 years. Algeria was on the verge of a major upset in their Group H opener Tuesday, taking the lead through a penalty in the 25th minute. Try as they might, Belgiums attacking players just couldnt break down Algerias defence. In the end, it was the Belgian bench which found the way, with substitutes scoring twice for a 2-1 comeback win. "We tired them down. We just tired them down," Belgium coach Marc Wilmots said. "I told them, Dont worry, we will score." Algerias surprising lead stood for 45 minutes until Marouane Fellainis strong glancing header, with his back to goal, from a Kevin De Bruyne cross in the 70th. Fellaini, who many had considered would start the match, had only come onto the pitch five minutes earlier and was Wilmots final substitution. Dries Mertens right-foot strike beat Algerias goalkeeper in the 80th after Eden Hazard saw him free on the right and set him up for the decider. Mertens, who went on at the start of the second half, sent his shot high in the net outside of Rais Mbolhis reach. "We knew it would be tough, that there would be no space," Wilmots said. "We made one error and we paid for it. The bench made the difference. We showed mental strength and we came back." The error was an obvious one. Belgium left back Jan Vertonghen dragged down Sofiane Feghouli in the area, and the Algerian attacking midfielder got up and converted the resulting penalty. At that point, Algeria was on course to produce another upset of a major team as it did in 1982 when it beat West Germany in its first group match. "We played a very good game against one of the favourites," Feghouli said. "We have to build on this." The Algerians started brightly but faded toward the end against Belgiums unrelenting attack. "We saw their strength come through. They showed that Belgium has great players," captain Madjid Bougherra said. "We lacked freshness and energy. The heat cost us." Belgium, widely billed as the favourite in Group H, next plays Russia, while Algeria meets South Korea on June 22. Algeria dominated possession in the opening minutes, surging forward and moving the ball with flair. Belgium eventually settled down and regained control, ending the match with 65 per cent possession. Before Belgiums comeback, the Algeria defence held firm, setting up a bulwark in the final third of the pitch. When Belgium had the ball, Algeria defenders allowed them little room to manoeuvr -- defenders at times doubled up on Hazard, shutting down space for him to operate down the left. "We just missed a big upset, a victory," Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic said. "We were so close. "My players have no reason to blush. They may be disappointed, but there is no reason to cry." Defensive midfielder Axel Witsel had Belgiums best two opportunities in the first half -- powerful 25-yard shots parried by the Algeria goalkeeper in the 21st and 34th minutes -- and also snuffed out Algeria threats by protecting the back four and winning numerous aerial duels. Wilmots brought on Mertens for Nacer Chadli after halftime to give Belgium more of an attacking edge. He also took off lone striker Romelu Lukaku, who was left stranded and had a disappointing match, and replaced him with Divock Origi in the 58th. He made his final substitution in the 65th when he brought on Fellanini for Moussa Dembele to give the team more of a physical presence. INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Milos Raonic and Aleksandra Wozniak continued successful injury comebacks as each advanced into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday to next face reigning Grand Slam champions. Tenth-seeded Raonic, playing for the first time in more than a month after suffering ankle ligament damage, fired a modest 10 aces in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Colombian Alejandro Falla with a break per set providing the winning margin. "Im playing well this week, better with each match," said the 11th-ranked Thornhill, Ont., native. "Im proud to be back on court again. Im happy to be back and really happy to be playing so well, so quickly." Raonic lined up a match against Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who struggled to beat Czech Jiri Vesely 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4. Raonic owns a 2-1 lead in that series, winning their last in a 2012 Tokyo semifinal. "I have got to go out there and play well, thats the main thing to focus on," said Raonic. "I have to really take care of my serve, and try to sort of make the most of the situations as they occur. "Andys in a situation where he didnt play for a big chunk of time (back surgery) and Im in mine. I have to really buckle down and focus on myself and make sure I do my things well, and then change a few things that I may need to facing him." Wozniak is making quick progress after a shoulder injury with a 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0 defeat of Russias Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Blainville, Que., native set herself up for a huge test in the next round. She will face world No. 2, top seed and Australian Open champion Li Na after the two-time Grand Slam winner beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-4. This event marks the first time since late 2012, when her shoulder problems began, that the No. 241-ranked Wozniak has gone past the second round at a WTA-level tournament. Wozniak was pleased to advance after fighting and losing a second-set tiebreak but dominating in the final set to sweep to victory. "I"ve had a tough year and a half with my shoulder," she said. "It was a good match for me today. Russians are always tough, I had to being my A game today." Wozniak claimed victory in just under two hours, committing 10 double-faults in the match but breaking on nine of 13 chances. Wozniak credited her French coach Nathalie Tauziat with helping her to the victory. "She gave me encouragement and a boost for the third set," Wozniak said. "I was playing a little too far back on the court in the second. My balls were not as deep as in the first. "In the third, I tried to step up more, take the ball early. I didnt want to let her get back into it like I did in the second set." Wozniak, who will move into the 180s on ranking according to WTA estimates, is pleased with her comeback, which has bloomed this week in the desert. "Its really good, Im happy, Im progressing with every match, step by step," she said. "Im finding that aggressive way I used to play. It gives me confidence to start finding my game like before." Wozniak will next play Li for the fourth time, standing 1-2 in the series. "Its a privilege to play her," Wozniak said. "Ill have to play the way I know I can, like Ive played this week. She loves to dictate from the first ball. Ill stay on her and try to have a good match. "I wont be any more nervous than usual. I know how to handle these situations because Ive been in them before. It will be important to start from the first point and stay with her in the rallies." Grant Hill Jersey . The 25-year-old native of Milford, Conn., has 18 points in 41 games this season. Virginia Tech (7-6) registered its 22nd consecutive winning season with the victory. J.C. Coleman ran for a season-high 157 yards for the Hokies, who piled up 210 yards on the ground. Michael Brewer threw for just 94 yards on 14-of-24 passing with a touchdown and interception. Beamer was coaching from the coaches box, where he was ordered to be following throat surgery earlier in the month. His son Shane Beamer was the acting head coach. I tip my cap to Shane Beamer and how he and the rest of the team represented Virginia Tech, said Bearcats coach Tommy Tuberville. Gunner Kiel completed 14-of-26 passes for 244 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Bearcats (9-4), most of which came in the first half. Kiel exited the game early in the third quarter with a reported head injury. Chris Moore and Shaq Washington had 103 and 100 receiving yards, respectively, for Cincinnati, and Moore caught a pair of touchdowns. Backup quarterback Michael Colosimo led Cincinnati with 54 rushing yards. Holding a narrow 13-10 lead at the break, Virginia Tech was able to gain some breathing room on the first two possessions of the third quarter. Brewer capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Malleck on the opening possession of the second half to extend Virginia Techs lead to 20-10. On the Bearcats first possession, Kiel was hit hard by Deon Clarke and lost the ball. Defensive tackle Nigel Williams scooped up the loose ball and after he was stripped on thee return, teammate Greg Stroman recovered the ball and dragged a Cincinnati player into the end zone as the Hokies took a 27-10 lead.dddddddddddd Kiel would not return to the game, and Cincinnati mixed in Washington taking snaps in the wildcat and Colosimo over the following two drives. Colosimo was pressed into action because the more experienced backup quarterback, Munchie Legaux, was unable to play. After two drives stalled in Kiels absence, the Hokies added to their lead with a 38-yard Joey Slye field goal. The Bearcats offense finally got into a rhythm. Colosimo missed on his first three pass attempts, but his next two went to Moore for 23 yards and then a 43-yard score to get Cincinnati back into the game. I thought he was scared to death but he competed well, especially that one pass that he threw for a touchdown that he could not have thrown any better, said Tuberville. Colosimo could not duplicate that success, and Virginia Tech added one more field goal to account for the final margin. The teams were tied at seven after a first quarter that saw each team touch the ball five times and turn it over once. Kiels 31-yard pass to Moore opened the scoring, and Coleman responded with a 1-yard plunge on the following drive. In the second quarter, Slye made field goals of 45 and 49 yards. Andrew Gantz kicked a 25-yarder for Cincinnati. Game Notes Virginia Tech now owns a 6-5 lead in the all-time series, including a 2-1 record in bowl games ... Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at firstname.lastname@example.org. Hey Kerry, I enjoyed your opinion on the Burrows hit. Please give us a breakdown of what happened between Andrew Ference and Zack Kassian on Saturday night. It seems to me that the Oilers players have been trying to get revenge on Kassian for some time now and maybe its enough already. Ference jumped off the ice and in my view the principal point of contact was the shoulder to the head. At high speed. I look forward to your unbiased breakdown. Wayne Buhler --- Kerry, why isnt anyone talking about Andrew Ferences hit on Zack Kassian in the Edmonton-Vancouver game on Saturday? Do you think its different/should be looked at differently than the Alex Burrows hit? Mark Westgate Wayne and Mark: The illegal check delivered by Andrew Ference to the head of Zack Kassian was not of the two minute variety but deserving of a match penalty under rule 48.5. As a repeat offender, Ference was suspended three games. Ference was last suspended for one game on May 2, 2013 following an illegal check to the head of Mikhail Grablovski in game one of the Bruins-Maple Leafs playoff series. In the explanatory video Brendan Shanahan said, “Ference makes the decision to check Grabovski after playing the puck, however in doing so, he lunges toward Grabovski, extending his left arm and shoulder, picking Grabovski’s head and making it the principal point of contact.” On January 22, 2012 Ference was imposed a three-game suspension for charging Rangers defenceman, Ryan McDonagh. The referee assessed a 5 minute major and game misconduct on the play. McDonagh was shaken up as a result of the hit but was not injured. On this most recent play, Ference was set in a coiled posture as he cut across to make a hit on Kassian when the Canuck forward carried the puck wide near the top of the left end zone face-off circle. Once Kassian dished the puck into the middle slot Ference elevated his posture and with skates off the ice, delivered a shoulder cap check making Kassian’s head the main point of contact. Ference also elevated his right arm/elbow through the illegal check. Kassian’s posture was upright and therefore did not contribute in any way to being contacted in the head by his smaller opponent. The main difference between this illegal hit and the one that Alex Burrows was suspended three games for is in the timing. Burrows picked off Alexei Emelin’s head through excessively late contact. I thought the Ference hit on Kassian was more in line with the four-game suspension just levied to the Predators’ Anton Volchenko following his illegal check to the head of Michael Ferland of the Calgary Flames. Even though Ferland was injured and Kassian was not, Volchenko (like Ference) has been suspended two previous times during his NHL career. The team selected him first overall in the expansion draft to stock the CFLs ninth franchise, and following years of uncertainty he was preparing to once again be an undisputed No. 1 pivot. Then almost overnight, circumstances changed dramatically. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats released veteran quarterback Henry Burris -- who led them to last years Grey Cup -- at the end of January after signing Zach Collaros to be their new starter, creating an opportunity the Redblacks felt they couldnt pass up. Ottawa signed Burris to a three-year contract a few days later to be the face of the franchise -- a move that Glenn met with a trade demand, one that was finally granted last month at the draft when the Redblacks dealt him to the B.C. Lions. Now at training camp with his new team and happy to be wanted, theres still a tinge of bitterness in Glenns voice when talk turns to the way things played out in the nations capital. "Everybody knows the situation in Ottawa," the 34-year-old said this week. "I was kind of blindsided into what was going on because, not getting into everything ... they knew that I wanted to be the guy in order to be in Ottawa." He said the Redblacks didnt notify him they intended to sign Burris, simply adding: "I got it in the news the same day that it actually happened." Glenn wouldnt speculate on how things would have played out if Ottawa had let him know what they were thinking prior to the move, but hes comfortable with his new teammates and eager to contribute. "To me, its just a better situation than it was in Ottawa. Im just being honest, from top to bottom," he said. "It is it what it is. You dont worry about that kind of stuff. You sit back and you let everything else take care of itself. You only handle what you can handle." He points to a roster filled with players who won a championship three years ago as why he was willing to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Travis Lulay in B.C., something he wasnt able to accept with the Redblacks. "This is not any knock towards the Ottawa franchise or the league or the fans in Ottawa or anything," said Glenn. "Youre dealing with an expansion team versus a team (with) a lot guys who actually won the Grey Cup in 2011." Glenn could have eventually been given a shot behind Burris, who turns 39 on Wednesday, but theres a chance he might start the Lions season opener as Lulay continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. "Its more opportunity. Im going to be honest," he said. "I think thats one of the reasons why B.C. made the trade -- just to say we can get another quality guy. "I think the biggest thing for us is we have two guys who can win games." Lions head coach Mike Benevides said the team was desperate to add experienced depth at quarterback and it just worked out that Glenns situation changed at the right time. "I cant overstate how important it was to get Kevin," said Benevides. "When you take a look at where Travis is, we know were going to need all of training camp to get him where we need to get him to.dddddddddddd When you take a look at Kevin, what Ive seen thus far (is) an outstanding teammate, a pro thats been around 14 years." Glenn led the Calgary Stampeders to the 2012 Grey Cup game and has thrown for 39,418 yards and 222 touchdowns against 151 interceptions over his career while completing 62 per cent of his passes. "Hes thrilled to be here. He wanted to change. He got the change that he wanted, and for us now he gets to explore a lot of our offence," said Benevides. "Its a good marriage and I think hell be able to play at a moments notice." First-year Lions offensive co-ordinator Khari Jones, who has both played with and coached Glenn in the past, said it was critical to add a viable second option under centre after B.C. lost backup Thomas DeMarco in the expansion draft. "In this league right now you can never have too many quality quarterbacks," said Jones. "Its a tough league. Its a tough league to play 18 games and you want to have the opportunity when your starter might not be in there to have someone whos a starter in his own right to come in and play good football and help you win games." Although they both want to be on the field when B.C. opens its regular-season schedule later this month, Glenn and Lulay have already struck up a good working relationship, even making the four-hour drive from the Vancouver area up to Thompson Rivers University for training camp together in the same car. "Hes welcomed me with open arms (even though) were two guys fighting for the same position," said Glenn. "That right there, hands down I have respect for you. Were not even talking about stuff on the football field and how you play, but just the person that he is." Lulay said he watched Glenn from afar as an opponent and was impressed by how he dealt with platoon situations in Hamilton and Calgary in recent years. "He was always a guy I thought pretty highly of. Hes been a consistent guy and been able to play at a high level. Hes been in a lot of different situations," said Lulay. "Being able to overcome that and focus on being able to go out and play and playing well, that built a lot of respect from your peer group. "Knowing that hes a guy whos seen the highs, hes seen the lows of playing the position in the league, that just builds a lot respect before I even had known him. It helps us break that trust barrier a little quicker." Glenns ability to work in a number of different scenarios has also taken some of the pressure off Lulay to rush back from injury for a team that will be feeling the heat to perform in the tough West Division as Grey Cup hosts. "One of the things about being injured is you feel like youre letting your teammates down by not being able to be out there with them," said Lulay. "Having a guy you can trust to lead the team is really important. "A guy that plays 14 years in this league, that doesnt happen by accident." PITTSBURGH -- The first slump of Gregory Polancos major league career didnt last very long. Polanco hit a two-run homer and reached base three times, and the Pittsburgh Pirates won for the fifth time in six games, 5-1 over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old phenom entered his fourth week in the majors without a hit in 12 at-bats over his previous three starts, dropping his average 50 points to .288. But a night after singling in his first pinch-hit at-bat, Polanco doubled, walked and hit his third home run. "This game is all about adjustments," Polanco said. "You have to adjust quick. The faster you adjust, the better you do." Charlie Morton continued his effective pitching at home for Pittsburgh, which clinched its fourth consecutive series victory. Morton (5-9) limited Arizona to one run, five hits and three walks in six innings to lower his ERA at PNC Park to 2.13. Pittsburgh (44-40) has won nine of 11 and moved a season-best four games over .500. "We had a bad April. We dug a hole," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Weve been digging out. Thats all were doing right now, is digging out." Polanco has taken the opposite approach, reaching safely in 19 of 21 major league games. His line-drive shot to right off Chase Anderson in the second inning gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead. "Its fun to watch him," Hurdle said. "Hes got skills and he pays attention. The league has adjusted to him to some degree already and now hes starting to fire back a little bit." Paul Goldschmidt went 3 for 4 with a run for the Diamondbacks, who have lost three straight. Last-place Arizona had three errors. "We made some mistakes tonight, and it came back to haunt us," Goldschmidt said. "Thats uncharacteristic of this team and these guys; we take a lot of pride on our defence. . Tonight we didnt get it done." Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates, who earlier in the day was named NL player of the month for June, did not play the field in the ninth inning. He fouled a ball off his left foot and winced in pain in the eighth, but continued his at-bat and singled. After the game, McCutchen said, "Im good to go . feel good," but would not commit to being able to start Thursdays game. Morton has worked into the sixth inning during all eight of his home starts this season and has allowed four earned runs over 33 2-3 innings in his past five starts at home. "When I got into a tight spot I made some good pitches," Morton said. "But I really didnt get ahead of guys. I think when I did get in a situation where some pitches had to be made, I made some pretty good pitches." Justin Wilson, Tony Watson and Mark Melancon each worked a scoreless inning for Pittsburgh. Run-scoring hits by Starling Marte and McCutchen in the eighth inning eliminated a save opportunity for Melancon. Russell Martin went 2 for 3 with a walk for the Pirates. Anderson (5-4) allowed 11 baserunners and did not get out of the fourth inning. "I wasnt able to establish the inside part of the plate tonight and just didnt do a good job of putting myself in good counts to be successful," Anderson said. "That games on me, for sure." Winnipeg Jets 4 Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (Jets 35-34-10, 18-18-4 road) – After getting mathematically eliminated from the playoff race Thursday, the Jets talked about finishing the season playing the right way, establishing good habits and playing for each other. Considering everything, it was a very solid effort and a character win by the Jets. The loss leaves the Leafs out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, in what was their final home game of the season. Jets played without Evander Kane, coachs decision, then lost the services of Dustin Byfuglien late in the second with an upper body injury. Jets got great efforts from pretty much the entire lineup. The Leafs opened the scoring, Phil Kessel with his 37th on a great pass from Tyler Bozak. Bryan Little with his 23rd tied the game less than four minutes later, assists to Michael Frolik and Mark Stuart. Little had his seven game point streak snapped Thursday, but with the goal is 3-6-9 in his last nine. The Leafs took the lead on Nazem Kadris 20th of the year. It was an easy open net tap in power play goal after Ondrej Pavelec misplayed a dump in, had it go off his stick to the front of the net making it 2-1 Leafs. A big goal for the Jets came in the dying seconds of the first as Jacob Trouba out fought James Van Reimsdyk for a loose puck in front of the Leafs net for his 10th of the year. Frolik and Andrew Ladd drew assists. Shots in the first were 12-8 Jets. The second period was all Jets, despite having to kill off two penalties in the first half of the period. On their second power play in the back half of the period, Toby Enstrom with his 10th of the year gave the Jets their first lead of the game. Enstrom walked the line from left to right and fired a screened shot past James Reimer. The goal ties a single season career high for Enstrom, assists went to Ladd and Blake Wheeler. Shots in the second period were14-7 in favour of the Jets. When the Leafs did get chances, Pavelec was there to shut the door. Jets continued their strong play in the third, Coach Paul Maurice having to do some juggling with no Byfuglien. The Jets continued to be first on loose pucks and a great play by Wheeler, using his speed to set up Olli Jokinen for his 18th of the year making it 4-2. Jokinen has now scored in back to back games. The Leafs pulled Reimer with 2:45 remaining but a couple key saves from Pavelec and Wheeler using his speed to negate an icing call, helped the Jets close out the game. Shots in the third were 15-10 Jets and 41-25 Jets on the game. Jim Slater in his 499th NHL game, all with this organization, was key in the face-off department, winning nine of 15. Ladd, Wheeler and Frolik all had two point nights. Since December 1st Wheeler has 50 points in 51 games. He has 17 points in his last 14 games. Jacob Trouba at 26:10 again led the Jets in ice time. After missing the net 18 times Thursday, the Jets missed the net another 17 times tonight. The Jets directed a total of 71 shots at Reimer. Coach Maurice was "really happy" for his team. "We competed for pucks, played with tenacity, the bench was great. We got a bad break on their second goal but the bench stayed up beat and kept talking." Coach Maurice would not elaborate on Kane not playing, other than "coachs decision." "With Byfuglien out we had a hole in our forward lines. Eric Tangradi and Eric ODell gave us some good shifts. Key face-off wins for Jim Slater. Our team believed what they said, they would play for each other. One thing about this group, they care." Jets are home to Minnesota Monday and Boston Thursday (both TSN Jets, TSN 1290), then close out the season in Calgary Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Isaiah Crowell Jersey . Amid a rain of confetti, Shabazz Napier basked in the celebration on the court after being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four following the 60-54 win over Kentucky. Napier had 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting with six rebounds, and played lockdown defence in his final collegiate game. His career began as a freshman on the 2011 Connecticut team that won the title behind star guard Kemba Walker. Now, Napier is the man. "I will say one thing when they say Ray, Rip, Ben, Emeka, Kemba -- theyll soon say Shabazz," former coach Jim Calhoun, who won the 2011 title, said after watching the 2014 squad cut down the nets. Calhoun was referring to Ray Allen, Richard "Rip" Hamilton, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor and Kemba Walker. All except Okafor were guards. Not bad company at all. The Huskies steelyy point guard outshined Kentuckys freshmen phenoms.dddddddddddd Napier and fellow backcourt mate Ryan Boatright controlled the tempo and together outscored Wildcats twin guards Aaron and Andrew Harrison 36-15. On Saturday against Florida in the semifinals, Napier had 12 points and six assists. "Hes up there, hes up there," forward Niels Giffey said when asked where Napier rated among the history of Huskies guards. "He bleeds blue. He bleeds UConn." Napier looked like a floor general the way he directed players on offence with forceful motions. Instead of sulking after one blown play, Napier waited down court for his teammates and raised his right fist. Giffey said Napier promised his team after the 10-point loss to Louisville in the AAC tournament finals last month that they would cut down the nets in Texas. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics are opening up quite a cushion in the AL West. Josh Donaldson hit a two-run single in a four-run third inning against Oakland nemesis Jered Weaver and the As completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 6-3 victory on Sunday. "We played well this series," Donaldson said. "Got some timely hits and we pitched well. I definitely think its one of those series we walk away and feel good about ourselves." Jed Lowrie homered and drove in two runs and Coco Crisp added an RBI double against Weaver (6-4) to give the As their first home sweep of at least three games against the Angels since June 29-July 1, 2004. Oakland leads the AL West by 4 1/2 games over Los Angeles, its largest pre-All-Star break lead since being 5 1/2 up in 1990. "We stubbed our toe this weekend but were looking at the big picture," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Were a good team and our pitchers are a big part of that." The big inning was more than enough support for Sonny Gray (6-1), who allowed a pair of sacrifice flies and an RBI double by Erick Aybar in 6 2-3 innings to rebound from a rare rough start. Gray has 11 quality starts in 12 outings this season for a 2.45 ERA. "We all knew coming in it was tight and they were playing really good baseball and we needed to take care of business at home," Gray said. "The way we were able to put these three games together ... that was awesome." As good as Gray has been this season, Weaver has been even better against the As of late. He allowed just two runs in 44 1-3 innings over six starts the past two seasons against Oakland, proving to be the one Angels pitcher who befuddled the As on their way to back-to-back AL West titles. Oakland more than doubled that scoring output in the fourth inning with a rally that got started when Craig Gentry hustled to beat out a potential double play. Gentry went to third on Eric Sogards single and scored on Crisps double. Donaldson added his two-run single and Lowrie capped the inning with a two-out single that made it 4-0. "This is a totally different As club," Weaver said. "They have great pitching, guys who can get on base at the bottom of the order and who can do the little things. I had one inning that got away from me. I wish we played better this series, but it is not the end of the year. Well see them again." Grey escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Hank Conger to end the fourth inning before allowing the sacrifice flies to Aybar and Albert Pujols in the fifth. Lowrie, who entered the game in a 4-for-30 slump, hit his solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to put Oakland back up by three and the As added an unearned run in the sixth as Oakland matched its highest scoring output ever against Weaver in 27 career starts. "I think he just left some pitches up," Donaldson said. "He tries to execute up at times, but there are times when he left some off-speed pitches up and that gives us a chance to definitely hit the ball a little bit harder." Grey was replaced by Dan Otero after Aybars two-out double in the seventh made it 6-3. Otero struck out Pujols to end the inning. Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless eighth and Sean Doolittle struck out the side in order in the ninth for his fifth save in six chances. Kozun scored two goals and assisted on another while Drew MacIntyre stopped 27 shots as the Marlies topped the host Milwaukee Admirals 5-2 on Saturday in American Hockey League playoff action. Toronto now leads the best-of-five first-round series 2-0. "Its nice (to have the puck go in), but its nicer to get the win," said Kozun. "Were up 2-0 now. Milwaukees played well and given us all we can handle. Now we go back to Toronto and try to finish it." Including the regular season, Kozun had gone 15 games without a goal, registering just one assist. "We knew he would break out at some point," said Marlies head coach Steve Spott, "And in a game like tonight where we werent that tidy, it was great to have him break out and get a couple of big goals for us." Sam Carrick, Korbinian Holzer and Jerry DAmigo also scored for Toronto, which registered three power-play goals on eight opportunities while killing off all seven of Milwaukees chances with the man advantage. Calle Jarnkrok and Bryan Rodney scored for the Admirals, who face the daunting task of needing to win three straight, all in Toronto. Kozun hit the crossbar early in the game, but he broke through at 18:51 of the first period to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Kozun fired a low wrister from the top of the left circle that found its way through traffic past Milwaukee goalie Marek Mazanec, who never saw it. Carrick made it 2-0 at 8:07 of the second with his third goal of the series, scoring during a two-man advantage. Carrick was all alone at the left post and took a pass from Trevor Smith straight across the goalmouth. Milwaukee had committed four penalties in a span of three minutes 15 seconds to set up that opportunity. The Admirals finally got on the board in the first minute of the third period. Jarnkrok beat MacIntyre from inside the top of the right circle off a faceoff 53 seconds in.dddddddddddd. Milwaukee had life, and another opportunity came their way when Toronto defenceman Dylan Yeo went to the box for four minutes on high-sticking call just two minutes later. But the Marlies killed off all four minutes with little trouble, then added an insurance goal on another power play. Mazanec stopped the initial shot by Holzer, but lost sight of the puck between his legs and Kozun poked it in at 11:31. Holzer added a third power-play goal for the Marlies at 17:21. Rodney scored for Milwaukee with 1:06 remaining before DAmigo added an empty-net goal with 39.5 seconds left. "I think special teams are always a huge part of success in the playoffs," said Holzer. "All the guys sacrificed and we had (MacIntyre) standing on his head. It was a great effort by the whole team -- by every killer out there and the guys on the bench cheering guys on after they blocked shots. Its a whole-team effort and something to be proud of." "Our power play the entire game -- the entire series so far -- has been very average," said Milwaukee head coach Dean Evason. "We definitely have to be better for sure." MacIntyre stopped all 15 first-period shots from Milwaukee, then stoned Colton Sissons on a point-blank shot from just outside the right post a little over a minute into the second. Game 3 is Thursday, May 1 in Toronto. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, would be Saturday and Sunday. Milwaukee has never come back from a 0-2 playoff deficit. "If were the first team, that would be awesome," said Evason. "Why not? You just look back to last year, we won three in a row to get into the playoffs by one point. St. Paul, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Nino Niederreiter scored the winning goal with 4:33 to play as the Minnesota Wild rallied in the third period to take a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders. Mikko Koivu and Thomas Vanek each posted a goal and an assist while Jason Pominville and Erik Haula also scored for the Wild, who have won two of their last three. Niklas Backstrom made 15 saves for the win. Josh Bailey, Matt Martin, Brock Nelson and Michael Grabner all lit the lamp for the Islanders, who have lost their last two. Chad Johnson allowed all five goals on 30 shots. Trailing by three goals entering the third, the Wild got one back 2:51 in after Koivu skated from the right of the net to the circle and used a defender as a screen to zip a wrister past Johnson. The next goal didnt come until 11:03 when Haulas turnaround shot from the right side went off the skate of New Yorks Thomas Hickey in front and went in. Just 45 seconds later, the Wild tied the game as a right circle faceoff win saw the team control the puck, and a shot on net from the right point saw Vanek eventually jam home the rebound. Niederreiter scored the winner less than four minutes later as the bouncing puck wound up in front and he tapped home his own rebound. The Isles were given a power play with 2:28 to play and pulled Johnson to skate 6-on-4 for much of the advantage, but were unable to pot the equalizer. It was all New York in the first period as Grabner scored on a wrister from the slot 8:31 in, and Nelson tipped in a Nick Leddy shot at 17:15 on the power play. Just 32 seconds later, the Isles made it a 3-0 game when Martin shot home a rebound from the left side. The Wild got one back at 9:01 of the second on the power play thanks to Pominvilles tip of a Ryan Suter shot. New York didnt have its first shot of the second period until there was 2:43 left in the frame, but the team made it count as Bailey buried a backhand for his fourth of the year. MINNEAPOLIS -- There will be plenty of drama for the Oakland Athletics as they head down the home stretch in the pennant race. Probably not the kind of drama that unfolded Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins, though. Jed Lowries foul ball that turned into a two-run double after umpires changed the call highlighted a 10-run fourth inning as Oakland pounded Minnesota 18-3. Every Oakland starter had at least one hit, one run and one RBI as the As recorded a season-high 22 hits and extended their lead over Texas in the AL West to three games. Lowrie, Coco Crisp and Stephen Vogt also homered. Yoenis Cespedes had three RBIs to help the As score their most runs in a game since beating Boston 20-2 on Aug. 31, 2012. "Once we got rolling there, we never stopped," Josh Donaldson said. Lowries foul ball turned two-run double helped keep the As rolling in the fourth. With runners on second and third and three runs already in, Lowrie lined a ball down the line that first-base umpire Bill Miller ruled foul as he danced out of the way. Lowrie pointed at the ground inside the white line where he thought the ball hit. Oakland manager Bob Melvin came out to argue, and Lowrie was eventually awarded a two-run double after the entire umpire crew huddled and changed the call. "Bottom line is thats an impossible call for Bill," Lowrie said. "His natural reaction is to get out of the way. They told me they just want to get the calls right, and they did." Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected by Miller after a long argument, the fifth time hes been tossed this season and the 67th ejection of his career. Fans at Target Field sarcastically cheered Miller when he gave the foul signal after Brandon Moss, the next batter, lined a foul ball down the first-base line. Gardenhire didnt want to talk about the call after the game. "Were not going to talk about anything else. Im not going to talk about all that crap," he said. "Cant do anything about it now." Sonny Gray (3-3), who had received fewer than four runs of support over his last six starts, struck out seven in five innings for the win. The right-hander had to sit in the dugout for 35 minutes during the marathon fourth inning, but welcomed the extra run support. "I wish we could score as many runs as possible every day," Gray said. "Its a confidence boost for our whole team." Grey almost had a couple more runs. In the fifth, Josh Reddick of the As drove a ball off the top of the wall in the right-field corner that Miller ruled a home run. The call was overturned after a replay review -- the first at Target Field this season -- and Reddick had to trot back out of the dugout to second base. Mike Pelfrey (5-12) was removed with no outs in the fourth, before all the theatrics that followed Lowries hit. He allowed seven runs and eight hits and has won just once since July 11. "This is probably the worst outing Ive had in a long time," Pelfrey said. "I fell behind guys and threw balls over the middle, and thats whats going to happen." Relievers Josh Roenicke and Ryan Pressly combined to allow six runs and six hits before the fourth inning was finally finished. Eric Fryer, called up from Triple-A Rochester on Monday, hit his first career home run in the sixth to give the few fans remaining at Target Field something to cheer about. The Twins allowed season highs in runs and hits. "Ive been a part of some games that have been lopsided," As manager Bob Melvin said. "But never a game where all the starters had one hit, one RBI and one run scored." As it tries to hold off the Rangers down the stretch, Oakland will play the Twins five more times. The As will only see the Rangers for one more three-game series -- this weekend in Texas. NOTES: Twins GM Terry Ryan said C Joe Mauer "didnt have a good day" so the team sent him home early. Watch the game live on TSN2 and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. The teams will finish off a two-game set at Turner Field Tuesday night, then head to Fenway Park for two more on Wednesday and Thursday. Boston picked up a much-needed 8-6 victory on Monday to snap a 10-game slide, its longest since an 11-game skid from June 8-19, 1994. David Ortiz did most of the heavy lifting with a three-run homer that tied the game in the fifth inning, then a sacrifice fly in the seventh to put the Red Sox in front. Dustin Pedroia, who had been struggling along with Ortiz, also drove in a pair of runs and finished 1-for-3. "In 10 games prior to today, theres one RBI combined (from Pedroia and Ortiz)," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "Today there is six between the two. I think the outcome is directly correlated to their performance. Thats not to put it all on them because we had a lot of good at-bats all the way up and down the lineup today. But them being in the middle of the lineup, their contributions are key for us." The Red Sox used seven different pitchers to get the job done as starter Clay Buchholz was pulled after only three innings as he allowed six runs and a staggering eight walks. Braves starter Ervin Santana went five innings and was also charged with six runs. "We know we still have the core of a winning team here and were going to win," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said before Mondays win. "But weve got to get there. Weve got to focus on today and just try to start playing a little bit better first." Atlanta has split its last six games overall and currently owns a two-game lead over Miami in the National League East. The Braves will send veteran Aaron Harang to the mound for Tuesdays game. Harang began the year with a 0.85 ERA through five starts, but he has gone 1-3 with a 6.11 ERA over his last five. He faced Milwaukee last week and gave up four earned runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings for a no-decision. It was only the second time in his last 10 starts that Harang gave up more than two earned runs. Boston will counter with ace Jon Lester, who has yielded three earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts. Like Harang, Lester is coming off a subpar outing as he gave up a season-high seven runs over the first two innings against Toronto. "I dont think were excelling in any one area, but I do think we have players capable of excelling and some of that is going to happen naturally," said Cherington. "There are other things that maybe you can do at some point to try to make the whole thing a lot better. "What we believed this offseason, what we believed in Spring Training, in terms of potential of this team, the position were in with people in the clubhouse, the depth of the talent -- that hasnt changed. We just have to perform. We have to find ways to perform better, and thats going to come in a number of ways." Boston has won 15 of the last 20 meetings in the head-to-head series. Reds at Dodgers, 10pm et/7pm pt (TSN2) Zack Greinke will try to keep the mound presence going for the Los Angeles Dodgers when they resume a three-game series versus the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday from Chavez Ravine. Greinke has to follow two superb outings from teammates Josh Beckett and Hyun- Jin Ryu when he makes his 11th start of the season.dddddddddddd Beckett started LAs current pitching trend with a no-hitter Sunday at Philadelphia and retired 23 straight at one point. It was Ryus turn in Mondays 4-3 win over the Reds and he followed suit by retiring the first 21 batters he faced until Todd Fraziers double in the eighth inning. Ryu came within six outs of a perfect game and finished with three runs allowed across 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none, and also added an RBI and a run scored. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly believed Ryu running the bases wore him down. "That long inning hurt him," Mattingly said of Ryu. "It broke the momentum for him. At the end of the night, we got the win." Kenley Jansen threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for his 15th save. Carl Crawfords two-run double highlighted a three-run seventh inning and he finished with two hits for the Dodgers, winners in three of four and eight of their last 13 games. The Dodgers will also host Pittsburgh and Chicago (White Sox) on this 10-game homestand. Greinke will try to pitch Los Angeles to its third straight win and he is 7-1 in 10 starts with a 2.01 earned run average. Greinke is coming off a no- decision in Thursdays 5-3 loss to the New York Mets and he was tagged for three runs -- one earned -- in five innings. Greinke snapped his streak of 21 straight starts allowing two runs or fewer. However, he has allowed two or fewer earned runs in a record 22 consecutive regular-season starts since July 30, 2013, going 14-2 with a 1.76 earned run average in that time. He surpassed Roger Clemens mark of 21 from 1990-91. The right-hander is 3-0 in four home outings and has a 4-1 record to go along with a 2.62 ERA in eight career starts against Cincinnati. Cincinnati opened a seven-game western swing with Mondays loss at Dodger Stadium and Frazier was able to spoil the show with his hit in the eighth. Reds ace Johnny Cueto was dealt the loss for surrendering four runs, one of which was earned, and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. Cueto was outdueled by Ryu and fell to 4-4 with his second straight loss after winning four straight decisions. After Frazier doubled to start Cincinnatis late rally, Ryan Ludwick singled and Chris Heisey followed with a sacrifice fly to put the visitors on the board. Brayan Pena then singled and Skip Schumaker walked one out later before Billy Hamilton stroked a two-run double. The Reds had two runners on base in the ninth, but Devin Mesoraco flied out to end the game. "Our silver lining was we rallied late," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We have to hang tough. Weve played a lot of close games, but unfortunately weve come out on the short end." Cincinnati has lost three in a row since winning three of four games, and will send Alfredo Simon against Greinke Tuesday night. Simon is 6-2 with a 2.31 earned run average in nine starts and is 5-1 in the past six decisions. He won his second straight start in last Wednesdays 2-1 victory at Washington and delivered seven innings of one-run ball. Simon struck out six and walked one for the second straight start. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Reggie Jackson came off the bench and outscored teammates Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook by himself. The Oklahoma City Thunder needed every point from their top reserve to win yet another overtime game against Memphis. Jackson scored a personal playoff-best 32 points, and the Thunder beat the Grizzlies 92-89 Saturday night, tying up their first-round Western Conference series at two apiece. "Reggie played an outstanding basketball game," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "He was able to attack and finish around the rim like hes done all year, and I knew he would bounce back ... Hes done a great job of coming in and giving us that lift offensively when we needed it as a sixth man." The Thunder sure needed him to avoid going back home in a 3-1 hole after three straight overtime games. Jackson had only scored 15 points combined in this series, but the guard shook off his shooting woes by hitting 11 of 16. Durant and Russell Westbrook, who struggled through their worst scoring game of the series with a combined 11 of 45 and 15 points apiece. He said a few made layups finally got him going. Jackson said Durant and Westbrook were allowing him to play. "They told me to just keep going and be aggressive," Jackson said. The Thunder blew a 14-point lead with Memphis, and the Grizzlies blew a third straight fourth-quarter lead themselves. Jackson tied up Memphis with five straight points in the final minute of regulation, and he hit all six free throws in overtime as the Thunder survived an extra period with seven lead changes. "Theyre running plays for him with Durant and Westbrooks spaced out," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "If youre going down, my hats off to them, both guys did a great job, and Reggie Jackson did a great job just being in attack mode." Durants two free throws with 1:02 left in overtime put the Thunder ahead to stay. "One of the things I was pleased about was the way Russ and KD took a backseat tonight and let Reggie take over," Thunder centre Kendrick Perkins said. "That says a lot about them also." Game 5 is Tuesday night back in Oklahoma City. Mike Conley missed a 26-footer just before the buzzer that could have forced a second extra period. Oklahoma Citys Serge Ibaka also blocked a Tony Allen shot with 2.7 seconds left in regulation to keep the Thunder alive for overtime. The Thunder won for only the second time in seven playoff games in Memphis, and this was just their second in eight overtimes with the Grizzlies since the start of the 2010-11 season. Oklahoma City also snapped Memphis franchise-record 15-game winning streak. Ibaka added 12 points for Oklahoma City. The Thunder outrebounded Memphis 58-49 and got 12 offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime combined. Marc Gasol led Memphis with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Allen had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Conley had 14 points and Zach Randolph added 11. Gasol said he expects the Grizzlies will be more aggressive with Jackson in the next game. But he also noted they have to do better against the likes of Ibaka and Caron Butler. "Those are the guys that are going to be the difference in the series," Gasol said. The Grizzlies blew a fourth-quarter lead for a third straight game. They last led 87-86 after Conley hit a step-back jumper. Then Duran hit two free throws with 1:02 left to put the Thunder ahead to stay, and Jackson sealed it with four free throws in the final 12.2 seconds. With NBA commissioner Adam Silver and former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer on hand, the Thunder got back to passing the ball and shooting better with the exception of Durant and Westbrook. Oklahoma City took its biggest lead of the game at 64-50 on a layup by Durant with 26.3 seconds left in the third. Then the Grizzlies put together their best stretch with a 15-5 spurt with Memphis coach Dave Joerger going with a small group of shooters including Mike Miller, Beno Udrih and Conley. Miller hit a 3-pointer that brought fans to their feet, and Allens layup off his own miss with 3:55 gave the Grizzlies their first lead since 20-18 early in the second quarter. But they couldnt hold the lead on a day where former owner Michael Heisley died at the age of 77. After Allen and Gasol hit jumpers pushing Memphis lead to 80-75, Jackson hit a 3 and then drove the lane to tie it up at 80 with 30.6 seconds to go. Notes: Derek Fisher played in his 244th career playoff game, tying him with Robert Horry for most post-season appearances in NBA history. ... PHILADELPHIA -- The Braves followed a familiar pattern -- using timely hitting and stingy pitching -- to complete a four-game sweep of Philadelphia. B.J. Upton tripled and drove in two runs Sunday to lead streaking Atlanta to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies and their first four-game sweep in Philadelphia in 50 years. Gerald Laird had two hits with a double and RBI for the Braves, who won for the sixth time in seven games while ending their road trip 8-3. Atlanta avenged a three-game sweep by Philadelphia June 16-18 at Turner Field. "We had timely hitting and the pitching was really good," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "You cant ask for more than that." It was the Braves first four-game sweep in Philadelphia since Sept. 24-27, 1964, when the franchise was in Milwaukee and their four wins at Connie Mack Stadium contributed to the Phillies infamous season-ending collapse that year. Marlon Byrd hit a pair of solo home runs for the slumping Phillies, who have lost eight of 10 to drop to 10 games under .500. "It didnt go our way," Phillies slugger Ryan Howard said. "The ball didnt bounce our way. It just wasnt meant to be for us in this series." Chase Utley singled in the seventh inning for his 1,500th career hit. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman greeted Utley with applause and a pat on the back, and the crowd of 33,215 gave the Phillies second baseman a standing ovation. There wasnt much else for the home fans to cheer. Philadelphia dropped to 18-27 at Citizens Bank Park and fell to 7-35 when scoring three runs or less as the offence continued to struggle. The Phillies were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, finishing the series 3 for 32. "Hitting in the clutch and hitting with men on base is a component we have to get better at," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We came up short in this series. It couldve been a big point for us." Aaron Harang (7-6) got the victory despite allowing 11 hits in seven innings. He gave up two runs, struck out four and walked two. "Harang battled through some tough innings, gave us a great effort," Gonzalez said. "Hes a wily vet." Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth, but had to work out of a jam for his 24th save in 28 opportunities. Kimbrel got the first two batters out before consecutive singles by Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins put runners on first and third for Utley.dddddddddddd But Utley flew out to right to end the game. "This was a heck of a series," Upton said. "We really played well. Nobody really tried to do too much. It was a little out of character for us not hitting a lot of home runs, but it all came together for us. Now we just have to keep grinding." David Buchanan (4-4), making his eighth start in place of injured left-hander Cliff Lee, allowed three runs on five hits and five walks in five innings to snap his three-game winning streak. The Braves went ahead 2-0 in the second on Uptons two-run triple off the wall in centre. Harang scored on the play after singling to centre with two outs. The pitcher had been 1 for 25 on the season before the hit. After the first of Byrds two solo homers brought Philadelphia within 2-1 in the bottom of the frame, Lairds RBI double plated Tommy La Stella to push Atlantas advantage back to two runs. It was the fourth extra-base hit in the last three games for La Stella, who had two doubles and a triple in Saturdays doubleheader. In the bottom of the frame, Byrd homered into the Philadelphia bullpen to make it a one-run game again. The Phillies threatened in the sixth when they put runners on first and second with nobody out. But Koyie Hills sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in the lead runner being forced out at third, and pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr. grounded into an inning-ending double play. Philadelphia had runners on first and third with one out in the seventh when Howard grounded into another inning-ending double play. DENVER -- Both the NFL opener and Peyton Manning were a little tardy. It was well worth the wait. Manning and the Denver Broncos waited eight long months, then another 33 minutes to get the season started because of a lightning storm. After three punts to start things off, Manning threw a record-tying seven touchdown passes, something no one had done in 44 years, in directing Denver to a 49-27 victory over Super Bowl champion Baltimore on Thursday night in a much-anticipated rematch against the team that ended the Broncos playoff run in January. Manning connected with his most prized addition, Wes Welker, and former college basketball player Julius Thomas and Demaryius Thomas for two TDs each in piling up the most points scored on the Ravens in their 18-year history. "I dont like excuses but I do think that lightning delay did slow us down," Manning said. "You guys have seen teams break it down: you come up for the team prayer, you put your hands in and you say, Broncos on 3, and you go out to the field. "We did it three times tonight," Manning said. "We did it, went back and sat down for 10 minutes and came back up again. Broncos on 3, now sit down for another 10 minutes. I know they had to deal with it, too, but it took us a while to get started." Wearing an orange-and-grey glove like the one he wore on that icy January night the last time these teams met, Manning took a while to get warmed up against a defence that had to replace seven Super Bowl starters. He ditched the glove when the rain stopped -- and then was unstoppable. "Peyton had an amazing night," Broncos coach John Fox said. "Peytons had a lot of amazing nights." Not like this, though. Manning is the sixth QB in NFL history to throw seven TD passes in a game and the first since Joe Kapp for Minnesota against Baltimore on Sept. 28, 1969. The others read like a Whos Who of passers who defied the 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust days long before the NFL became so pass-happy: Sid Luckman, Adrian Burk, George Blanda and Y.A. Tittle. Tom Brady never did it. Nor Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Steve Young or Terry Bradshaw. Or, for that matter, No. 7 himself, John Elway, who had his binoculars trained on the action from his perch in the luxury seats. "I felt like we had to keep scoring because Baltimore can score at any time," said Manning, who was 27 of 42 for 462 yards with no interceptions for an off-the-charts quarterback rating of 141.1. "Hes phenomenal. To continue to come out every year and put that kind of performance on for us, its amazing," Julius Thomas said. All part of a thorough thrashing of the team that put a harsh end to what had looked like a Super Bowl-bound 2012 in Denver. The rematch came nearly eight months after Baltimore beat Denver 38-35 in double overtime on an icy January night in the same stadium. The hero on that night was Jacoby Jones, who caught a 70-yard TD pass over Rahim Moore with 31 seconds left to tie it in regulation. This time, his night was cut short when he went back to field a punt in the first half and teammate Brynden Trawick plowed into him, sending him to the sideline with a sprained right knee. "Thats an experience problem, hes an inexperienced guy," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. When the teams finally took the field after the long delay, it was clear how much had changed. Pass rusher Elvis Dumervil moved from Denver to Baltimore as part of a bizarre, fax-infused contract squabble. Receiver Brandon Stokley also switched sides. The Broncos lost their best defender, Von Miller, to a drug suspension while Baltimore had to rebuild its "D" after losing emotional leaders Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. The Ravens suffered another loss of sorts when they were forced to play the seasons traditional opener on the road because of a conflict with the Orioles in Baltimore. The NFL hung a Flacco banner above Denvers stadium, but he hardly felt at home. Armed with a new six-year, $120.6 million contract, he matched the Broncos score for score in the first half and went into the locker room up 17-14 but had to play catch-up after falling behind 35-17 early in the third quarter. His final numbers: 34 of 62 for 362 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. "It was a pretty good game for a while and it got away from us," Flacco said. It was such a runaway, the Broncos were throwing away touchdowns by the end. Linebacker Danny Trevathan fumbled his pick-6 just shy of the goal line, pulling a Leon Lett imitation by celebrating too soon and the ball bounced out of the end zone for a touchback instead of a touchdown. No worries. Denver was ahead 42-17 at that point. "It was just a young mistake," Trevathan said. "It was kind of selfish. Im going to take full responsibility. Im going to grow from it." Mannings seventh TD pass was a blitz-beater that Demaryius Thomas caught in the left flat and raced up the seam for a 78-yard score that capped Mannings big night. "It didnt seem like that many," Welker said. "Youre just sitting there like, That was seven? Because hes so nonchalant about it." Flacco could only marvel at Mannings seven TDs. "Thats a sweet way to start a season," Flacco said. "You get ahead throwing that many touchdowns. I mean, shoot, hes almost halfway to 20 already." Demaryius Thomas finished with five receptions for 161 yards, Julius Thomas had five catches for 110 yards and Welker led the way with nine grabs for 67 yards. Welker is the first receiver to catch TD passes from both Brady and Manning. He has said he cant compare the two pre-eminent QBs, saying thats like choosing between Michaelangelo and Picasso. This night was certainly a masterpiece for Manning. Notes: Broncos injuries: KR Trindon Holliday (lower left leg), Eric Decker (right shoulder) and S Omar Bolden (left shoulder). ... It goes against our ingrained notion, particularly in sports, that hard work is rewarded and that players create their own luck. But, the truth is, there are so many things that happen on the ice over which a single player has little to no control. Advanced stats pioneer Gabriel Desjardins has taken the position that, in a given season, 38% of the standings results are luck-driven. (Start with shootouts and go from there.) When it comes to individual players, there are a couple of numbers to look at to see if a player has been lucky, getting the bounces, whatever, and that is contributing to better-than-expected results. On-ice shooting percentage refers to the 5-on-5 shooting percentage of all players when a particular player is on the ice. League average goaltending offers about a .922 save percentage in 5-on-5 situations so, naturally, average on-ice shooting percentages come in at 7.8%. Not every player shoots the puck with the same effectiveness, but even the best skaters can only have so much impact on a metric that involves four other skaters at any given time. Very few players can, over the long haul, generate a substantially higher on-ice shooting percentage because it is so dependent on the performance of others. Sure, Sidney Crosby can hover over 11% and random fourth-liners hang around 5% year after year, but somewhere in between is where the vast majority of players fall. (Since 2007, among skaters to play at least 1000 minutes at 5-on-5, 592 of 796 skaters -- 74.4% -- fall between 6.5% and 9.0% on-ice shooting.) The opposite angle of that percentage game is a players on-ice save percentage during 5-on-5 situations and this is another number that, over a larger sample, is beyond a skaters control. A lot of it will depend on the goaltender, though a factor like quality of competition can play into those results too. If youre facing top lines every night, for example, its not easy to hold their shooting percentages to five or six percent. While the standard short-form measure for whether a player has been lucky is PDO (which combines on-ice shooting and save percentages), I thought I would break it into components because, while the tendency is to have a PDO around 1000 over the long haul, there are players that are outside that range. Of 796 skaters to play at least 1000 5-on-5 minutes over the past seven seasons, 39 players have a cumulative PDO higher than 102.00, while 44 players have a PDO lower than 98.00. That leaves 713 of 796 (89.6%) within that 98-102 range. What Ive done is pulled out those players that have the largest differential from their previously-established on-ice shooting and save percentages to see who has benefited or being punished, essentially, by luck. (minimum 1000 5-on-5 minutes 2007-2013; 500 5-on-5 minutes this season) HIGH ON-ICE SHOOTING Francois Beauchemin, D, Anaheim 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 6.86 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 11.30 Difference: +4.44 Vladimir Sobotka, C, St. Louis 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 5.91 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 9.14 Difference: +3.23 Ryan Getzlaf, C, Anaheim 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 9.51 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 12.62 Difference: +3.11 Tyler Bozak, C, Toronto 2007-2013 On-ice SH%: 8.43 2013-14 On-ice SH%: 11.40 Difference: +2.97 Its difficult for individual players to affect on-ice shooting percentage, but especially so for defencemen, because they tend not to shoot the puck as often as forwards. So, Francois Beauchemin being far above his previous norms can be tied to spending a lot of his time on the ice with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Oh, and it turns out that Getzlaf is even having more success than usual this year. Blues C Vladimir Sobotka is an interesting case because hes spent much of his career as a third and fourth-liner, and been plenty effective in that role, but with St. Louis, hes had the opportunity to move up the depth chart. His most common linemates have been Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko, much better than typical checking line fare, and that should be at least part of the reason for his dramatic increase. Then we get to Tyler Bozak, the Maple Leafs centre who has come under so much criticism in recent seasons, but has quieted critics this season, scoring 45 points in 53 games. Certainly, Bozak reaps the rewards of playing with Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk on Torontos top line, but thats not unfamiliar territory -- Bozak has played a lot with Kessel over the years -- so the conclusion to be drawn from this is that Bozak (like anyone far exceeding their established norms) is likely due for some regression because, no matter how much of a Tyler Bozak supporter you might be, theres no argument to be made that he somehow creates scoring chances at the same calibre of Sidney Crosby over the long haul. However, Bickell has also managed just two assists in 53 games -- the last one coming December 30 -- so no one is doing much scoring with Bickell on the ice and, in the rare instances that they do, hes rarely part of the scoring play. Veterans Dan Cleary and Steve Bernier run into fourth-line problems. Theres no guarantee that skating on the fourth line is going to leave you with an on-ice shooting percentage that low, but thats not going to happen with a full season on the first line either. To an extreme, look at what has happened with Matt Hendricks, already starting from a relatively low point and still finding a way to cut that percentage more than in half -- he hasnt recorded an assist in 27 games withh Edmonton.dddddddddddd Ville Leino and, since traded Steve Ott suffer from the effects of playing together in Buffalo, apparently. Kris Letang and Alexander Edler counted among the unluckiest defencemen, epecially so in Letangs case since his most common forwards have been Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin -- not exactly lacking in finishing skill. Of course, we cant ignore Alex Ovechkin, who has spent plenty of time with Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson, but Ovechkin has been the only one on the Capitals scoring when hes on the ice 5-on-5. In those situations, Ovechkin has 20 goals on 215 shots (9.3%) and the rest of the Capitals on the ice with him have combined for 10 goals on 309 shots (3.2%). Its such a dramatic departure from Ovechkins previous levels, that it doesnt reasonably figure to be the new norm, unless the Capitals decide to keep skating Ovechkin with Jay Beagle on a regular basis. Paul Ranger is at the extreme end, but his data also has a large gap for the years that he didnt play between the Lightning and the Leafs. Kyle Clifford and Anze Kopitar have strong goaltending in Los Angeles, but theyve had strong goaltending in the past, so it sure seems that theyre extra fortunate this year. The Colorado trio of John Mitchell, Cody McLeod and Maxime Talbot is certainly reaping the rewards of Semyon Varlamovs play. Its those fortuitous percentages that leave them with positive plus-minus numbers despite subpar puck possession stats. Where the value comes in seeing these numbers is in terms of perception. Nikita Nikitin or Marco Scandella may not be held in terribly high regard, but these numbers show that there is some luck involved in their respective plus ratings this season, the type that would be due to regress in time. Not especially. Theres an all-time great two-way forward, Pavel Datsyuk, and a puck-rushing defenceman-turned-forward Dustin Byfuglien that might be considered at opposite ends of the defensive spectrum by some, but it really appears to be a random list that includes both offensive and defensive players. Are they players who have had some shaky goaltending behind them this year? Yes. Stempniak, Galiardi and Cammalleri have been victims of Calgarys subpar puck-stoppers, while Elias and Clowe take some lumps with New Jerseys goaltending. This group consists of the players that have been unlucky relative to previous seasons and, aside from Pyatt and Stempniak, who joined Pittsburgh in-season, the rest are all on teams that rank in the bottom third of save percentage this season. The takeaway, then, is not to worry so much about Stempniak being minus-21 in 52 games with the Flames because, with better goaltending alone, he would be due to improve, and hes quickly plus-5 in his first 15 games with Pittsburgh. Patrik Elias may be a minus player, but he continues to be a strong possession player whose numbers would appear more favourable with the randomness of better goaltending when hes on the ice. Thats the story to be revealed by some of these numbers, that some players are getting good breaks this year, others arent and, in the relatively small sample of a single season of hockey, these things happen. Over time, those numbers tend to even out, so the players that have been fortunate this year, may be hard-pressed to duplicate their success, while those that have been getting a bit of a raw deal could be expected to have better days ahead. Eden Prairie, MN - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson released a statement Monday and said he is "not a child abuser." Peterson was deactivated by the Vikings on Friday for this past Sundays home opener against New England after last weeks indictment by a Texas grand jury for reckless or negligent injury to a child. He returned to Montgomery County, Texas on Friday night and was booked into jail, then released on bond early Saturday morning. An investigation into Petersons discipline of one of his sons revealed the 2012 NFL MVP used a switch (a thin, flexible tree branch) to punish his son. The Vikings, on Monday, said Peterson will return to practice this week and is expected to play Sunday against New Orleans. The team said it will come to a further conclusion on Petersons status once the legal system runs its course. Peterson said in the statement he wouldnt discuss the case, but offered an apology and said he had learned much from the proceedings. "My attorney has asked me not to discuss the facts of my pending case," Peterson wrote. "I hope you can respect that request and help me honor it. I very much want the public to hear from me but I understand that it is not appropriate to talk about the facts in detail at this time. Nevertheless, I want everyone to understand how sorry I feel about the hurt I have brought to my child. "I never wanted to be a distraction to the Vikings organization, the Minnesota community or to my teammates. I never imagined being in a position where the world is judging my parenting skills or calling me a child abuser because of the discipline I administered to my son. "I voluntarily appeared before the grand jury several weeks ago to answer any and all questions they had. Before my grand jury appearance, I was interviewed by two different police agencies without an attorney. In each of these interviews I have said the same thing, and that is that I never ever intended to harm my son. I will say the same thing once I have my day in court. "I have to live with the fact that when I disciplined my son the way I was disciplined as a child, I caused an injury that I never intended or thought would happen. I know that many people disagree with the way I disciplined my child. I also understand after meeting with a psychologist that there are other alternative ways of disciplining a child that may be more appropriate. "I have learned a lot and have had to reevaluate how I discipline my son going forward. But deep in my heart I have always believed I could have been one of those kids that was lost in the streets without the discipline instilled in me by my parents and other relatives. I have always believed that the way my parents disciplined me has a great deal to do with the success I have enjoyed as a man. I love my son and I will continue to become a better parent and learn from any mistakes I ever make. "I am not a perfect son. I am not a perfect husband. I am not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser. I am someone that disciplined his child and did not intend to cause him any injury. No one can understand the hurt that I feel for my son and for the harm I caused him. My goal is always to teach my son right from wrong and that?s what I tried to do that day. "I accept the fact that people feel very strongly about this issue and what they think about my conduct. Regardless of what others think, however, I love my son very much and I will continue to try to become a better father and person." Peterson rushed for 75 yards on 21 carries in Minnesotas season opener, a 34-6 win at St. Louis. He ran for 1,266 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Not even LeBron James departure changed his mind. And shortly after the Heat took a King-sized hit, their future started coming together. Bosh is staying in Miami, agreeing Friday to a five-year contract that will be worth about $118 million, said two people familiar with the deal. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side had confirmed it publicly. Keeping Bosh addresses one of the Miamis top priorities after getting the news earlier in the day that James was leaving the Heat and returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Theres still plenty of work for Heat President Pat Riley to do, however. But first, he and the team lauded what James meant to them over the last four seasons. "While I am disappointed by LeBrons decision to leave Miami, no one can fault another person for wanting to return home," Riley said in a statement Friday night. "The last four years have been an incredible run for South Florida, Heat fans, our organization and for all of the players who were a part of it. LeBron is a fantastic leader, athlete, teammate and person, and we are all sorry to see him go." Next up for the Heat: More than likely, its a deal with Dwyane Wade, who has spent all 11 of his NBA seasons in Miami. Wade and Miami were negotiating a new contract Friday, a move that was expected from the very moment that the 2006 NBA Finals MVP opted out of a deal that would have paid him about $42 million over the next two seasons. "I know where Im going," Wade told The AP on Thursday, one day before James let the world that he was going elsewhere. While Miami is working to get a Wade deal finalized, its unclear when Bosh will actually sign his contrract -- though that wont hold up the Heat from making other moves.dddddddddddd Hes expected to be in Ghana until next week, which creates a logistical challenge. Bosh is an All-Star who averaged 16.2 points on 52 per cent shooting last season, and now figures to potentially get many more shots in the Heat offensive scheme. For his career, Bosh has averaged 19.2 points in 11 NBA seasons. This much is certain: Theres no shortage of openings on the Heat roster. Miami has agreed to deals with Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger, which should get finalized once the Heat figure how to allocate their spending now that James is gone. Guard Norris Cole was the only holdover from last season with a guaranteed contract, while young centre Justin Hamilton has a partially guaranteed deal and point guard Shabazz Napier came to the Heat on draft night. Wade and Udonis Haslem, who also opted out with hopes it would help the team keep James, will almost certainly be back, and the team thinks highly of James Ennis, who played overseas last season. But that means a ton of slots in the locker room at AmericanAirlines Arena that is currently being renovated -- a fitting metaphor if there ever was one -- will be available between now and training camp. Riley said the Heat mantra that he, managing general partner Micky Arison and coach Erik Spoelstra have cultivated will not be changing. "Over the last 19 years, since Micky and I teamed together, the Miami Heat has always been a championship organization," Riley said. "Weve won multiple championships and competed for many others. Micky, Erik and I remain committed to doing whatever it takes to win and compete for championships for many years to come. Weve proven that we can do it and well do it again." It appears there are three bidders to buy the Buffalo Bills. According to multiple reports, Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, real estate developer Donald Trump and a Toronto-based group involving Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment CEO Larry Tanenbaum, the Rogers family and musician Jon Bon Jovi entered bids to purchase the NFL team. The New York Post is reporting that Pegulas bid was in excess of $1 billion. The three bids will now be reviewed by the investment bank handling the sale of the team. The bank will then decide which ones are approved for the next stage in the process. Were not talking about Hank Aaron, or Bob Gibson or Roger Clemens, Cal Ripken Jr. or Barry Bonds. Were talking about Dr. Frank Jobe who passed away Thursday night at the age of 88. He is the surgeon who pioneered the ulnar collateral ligament transplant surgery that saved so many elbows and prolonged the careers of so many players, pitchers and position players alike. Dr. Jobe first performed his landmark surgery in 1974. He was actually in the stands watching at Dodger Stadium when Tommy John, for whom the operation will forever be known, blew out his elbow in a game against the Expos. John was out of action for 18 months after the surgery. But he not only returned, he flourished. Tommy John was named Comeback Player of the Year in 1976 and went on to win another 164 games with the Dodgers and Yankees before retiring at age 46. He finnished with 288 victories and a 3.34 ERA. He appeared in three All-Star Games after his surgery. He was never the best pitcher of his generation or anything close to that, but his career numbers and the fact he rebounded from this operation the way he did should in the Hall of Fame in my mind. Just how important has this operation been? Well before last season, 124 of the 360 pitchers on the opening day rosters had undergone at least one "Tommy John". Its not just the pitchers though, whove gone through this career-saving surgery. Carl Crawford, Rafael Furcal, ex-Jay Kelly Johnson and current Jays catching prospect A.J Jimenez have all undergone this elbow surgery. The first Blue Jays pitcher I could find who had the operation was David Wells back in 1985. But the list grows from there. Jimmy Key in 1988, former skipper John Farrell in 1991 while he was pitching for Cleveland and the list goes on. You have Billy Koch, A.J Burnett while he was with Florida, Jason Frasor who had it done twice, B.J. Ryan in 2007, Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum, Josh Johnson while with Florida and Chris Carpenter with St. Louis in 2007. All owe their careers to Dr. Jobe and those surgeons who have followed his trailblazing path. The disturbing thing is the way elbow injuries have increased. There were 24 documented "Tommy John" surgeries in 2013, including those of Mets star pitching prospect Matt Harvey and Blue Jays journeyman pitcher Ramon Ortiz, who underwent the operation for a second time. But the worst year by far was 2012, when there were 46 "Tommy Johns" including four to Blue Jays Drew Hutchison, Kyle Drabek, his second, Luis Perez and the aforementioned A.J. Jimenez. There are two known pitchers who actually had three elbow ligament transplant surgeries. Jose&nbbsp;Rijo who helped spark the Reds to victory in the 1990 World Series and Jason Isringhausen, who turned from a top starting prospect with the Mets to a standout reliever later in his career.dddddddddddd Rijo is truly a remarkable story. After being named an All-Star with the Reds in 1995, he suffered a serious elbow injury and was out of the game for five full seasons. He finally battled back in 2001 as a reliever with Cincinnati. It was said after three "Tommy John" surgeries and two other arm operations, his elbow had almost no ligament left. But ironically, the arthritis in his elbow, the scar tissue and the fact he had built up the muscles in his forearm to such an extent, he was still able to throw against all odds. Rijo retired in 2002 but not before winning the final ball game ever played at old Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. One pitcher who doesnt need to worry about his ulnar collateral ligament is Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Thats because he was born without one. Like Rijo, Dickey has defied the odds with many a doctor saying Dickey shouldnt be able to pitch without that ligament in his elbow. Yet two years ago, he won the Cy Young Award with the Mets and is still going strong with the Blue Jays at 39. At least 85 per cent of "Tommy John" patients make a complete recovery and in most cases, their elbows are stronger than ever. However, there are some who dont make it all the way back. Blue Jays closer B.J Ryan was never the same after his surgery in 2007 and was out of the game within a couple of years. But cases like that are the exception rather than the rule and the game would be a pale shadow of itself without the medical marvels of Dr. Frank Jobe. As a footnote, we should also mention Dr. Jobe pioneered a surgical technique on another Dodgers star, Orel Hershiser. It was a less invasive shoulder procedure that reduced the risk of collateral damage to the shoulder structure and sped up the recovery time. This and That Phillies infielder Freddy Galves will one day be the answer to a trivia question. On Thursday, he became the first player to hit a home run off the Yankees Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka. I try not to get too caught up in the struggles of pitchers in spring training since theyre often just working on command or one specific pitch but Ive got to admit on Wednesday, I was a little bit concerned when Brandon Morrow gave up five runs on six hits over three innings to the Pirates. Then I noticed on the same day, White Sox ace Chris Sale gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in just 2-2/3 innings against the Padres. Then, the Cubs Jeff Samardzija surrendered three runs on four hits in three innings in a 7-5 loss to Colorado. At that point, I realized its too early to be making hard judgements. REGINA -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders have agreed to a one-year contract extension with president and CEO Jim Hopson. Hopson joined the Roughriders as their first CEO in 2005. He will remain with the CFL club into 2015. "This started about a year ago between the board and Jim," said Roger Brandvold, the Riders chairman of the board. "We spent a fair bit of time talking about the future of Saskatchewan Roughriders and where we need to be. "When I reflect on some of the successes Jim has had, it certainly enabled us to move forward in what we plan to do. Hes assembled a tremendous group of individuals . . . but hes allowed them to grow and hes allowed them to play a critical role in the future of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and where we are today. On top of all that, hes played a tremendous role in who we are and how we continue to grow this organization." During Hopsons tenure, the Riders have advanced to the Grey Cup four times, winning in 07 and last year. The franchise has also recorded record profits under Hopson. Hopsons extension is the latest this off-season for the defending Grey Cup champions, who signed head coach Corey Chamblin, GM Brendan Taman and quarterback Darian Durant to new deals before coming to terms with their top executive. A former Regina Rams junior player, Hopson was an offensive lineman with the Riders from 1973 to 76. He retired after Saskatchewans heart-breaking 23-20 Grey Cup loss to Ottawa -- the Rough Riders won on Tony Gabriels 24-yard TD grab with 20 seconds remaining -- for a full-time career in education. Hopson graduated from the University of Regina with a degree in education and earned a masters degree from the University of Oregon. Brandvold said the CFL club will search for Hopsons successor ahead of the completion of the Riders new stadium, which is slated to open in 2017. Brandvold said it was Hopsons decision that the franchise have a new top executive in place once the facility is completed. "The transition to the new stadium is going to be a significant one and one that has to be well managed and one that has to be very much committed to by the CEO," Brandvold said. "And while Jim has played a very critical role in getting us to where we are today in this new stadium, its one that he felt maybe wouldnt fit into his schedule. "I respect Jims decision." United will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday after suffering a 1-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC last week on home turf. Seattle struck for the only goal of the contest in the 39th minute through Chad Barrett. Gonzalo Pineda set the play in motion with a well-placed cross into the area and Barrett rose highest to nod home a powerful header. The home sides best chance at a late equalizer was their last, when in the 90th minute, Sean Franklin found himself on the end of a well-placed through ball from defender Bobby Boswell, but his right-footed attempt from seven yards was dealt with expertly by Seattle goalkeeper Stefen Frei. But TFC was ultimately denied the three points when Rookie of the Year candidate Harrison Shipp found the leveler midway through the second half and the clubs were forced to share the spoils. "Sometimes, when youre away from home, youre down to 10 men and youve got a lead, you want to protect it," head coach Ryan Nelsen told MLSSoccer.com after the match. "We probably fell back a bit too deep and allowed them to take a lot more of the play." Toronto FC will get a lift against United as United States international Michael Bradley returns to TFC following World Cup duty. It will be difficult for Bradley to get back into the lineup so quickly, but Nelsen left the possibility open. "Well see," Nelsen said. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With Arizonas No. 1 ranking hanging precariously in the balance, T.J. McConnell hustled over to the corner for the biggest offensive rebound of the game. Then Nick Johnson drew a foul, and the Wildcats overtook Michigan at the free throw line. Johnson made six free throws over the final 25 seconds, and Arizona held on for a 72-70 victory over the Wolverines on Saturday after rallying from an 11-point deficit in the second half. Michigan led by one with under a minute to go, but McConnell was able to rebound his own miss to keep a crucial possession alive. Johnson drew a foul on a drive with 24.6 seconds left, and he put the Wildcats ahead to stay. "This was as quality of a win as you can have, in my opinion, in the country," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "I felt like today -- were going to be better if we won, were going to be better if we lost." Michigan (6-4) certainly gave the Wildcats a test, leading for most of the game. Arizona finished with 17 offensive rebounds, but that translated into only a 34-28 scoring advantage in the paint. If the Wolverines had been able to come up with McConnells late miss, they might have been the ones shooting free throws at the end to put the game away. Instead, Arizona got the ball to Johnson, who was fouled and gave his team a 67-66 lead from the line. Michigans Nik Stauskas missed at the other end, and after a tie-up, the possession arrow gave the Wildcats (11-0) the ball with 9.5 seconds remaining. Johnson pushed the lead to three with two more free throws, and Arizona fouled Spike Albrecht at the other end. Albrecht made only one of two free throws, and after two more free throws by Johnson made it 71-67, Albrecht made a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left. Arizonas Gabe York added a free throw to end the scoring. "The first two were the ones that I had to really concentrate about," Johnson said. "After I made those, I knew that the next two, four, were going in." The Wildcats finished 14 of 15 from the free throw line. Brandon Ashley scored 18 points for Arizona, which finally wore down Michigan inside in the final minutes. "I feel like they were just throwing it at the rim and just going up and playing volleyball," said Michigans Jon Horford, who did his best to protect the basket with four blocked shots. "We have to get tougher in that aspect." Glenn Robinson III had 20 points for Michigan, but he did most of his damage in the first half. Caris LeVert contributed 15 points for the Wolverines, but this game was decided by Arizonas late free throws and the one miss by Stauskas when Michigan had a chance to go back ahead. Michigan led 37-28 at halftime, and Mitch McGary pushed the lead to double digits with a dunk for the first points of the second half. But Arizona went on an 11-2 run to pull within two. Michigan led 58-50, but the Wildcats again had an answer. Aaron Gordon and Ashley made consecutive baskets, and a dunk by Ashley cut the lead to two. Johnson, Gordon and Kaleb Tarczewski had 14 points each for Arizona. Tarczewski went down with what looked like a right leg injury around the midpoint of the second half, but he was able to return. Its been a quiet start to the season for Robinson, who showed enough potential in 2012-13 that he considered a jump to the NBA after his freshman year. Against Arizona, he showed why hes a definite candidate to play at the next level. Robinson made all seven of his shots from the field in the first half, including a contested 3-pointer in the final seconds that gave Michigan the nine-point halftime lead. "We didnt feel going in at half that we were down nine," Johnson said. "We felt good about ourselves. We had a few easy shots that we didnt finish." Opponents were shooting only 27 per cent from 3-point range against Arizona coming into the game, but the Wolverines were 6 of 11 in the first half. They finished 8 of 17. The Wildcats rallied late when they finally started converting around the basket. A three-point play with 2:32 to play by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson gave Arizona its first lead of the second half at 63-62. The lead changed hands four more times after that -- for good when Johnson made the first two of his six late free throws. Rollins hit his 200th career homer and pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr. had a tiebreaking two-run double that put the Phillies ahead for good in a wild 14-10 victory over the Rangers on Monday. Rollins matched Cal Ripkens major league record by starting his 14th consecutive opener at shortstop for the same franchise. He also became the 19th player in major league history with at least 400 doubles, 100 triples and 200 homers. "J-Roll, with the big pop early, just really set the tone and got things going," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "I think it was contagious after that." The Phillies had 17 hits and their most runs in a season opener since 1900. It was more than enough to make up for a rough outing for Lee (1-0), who was unable to protect a 6-0 lead after Rollins homered in the second inning. Rollins, whose wife is expecting their second child, flew to Texas on Sunday, a day after the rest of the team did. "I didnt want to come here and then have to fly to Philadelphia," Rollins said. "The baby has let me go out and play ball for a few more days." Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche also homered for the Phillies, who beat the Boston Beaneaters 19-17 in their 1900 opener. Converted Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers gave up seven runs over four innings. But the game was tied when Scheppers threw his last pitch. Mayberry, a first-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2005 who never played for the big league club and was traded three years later, got his tiebreaking hit in the fifth against Pedro Figueroa (0-1) for a 9-7 lead. Lee matched his career high by allowing eight runs and struck out only one, but the left-hander made it through five innings in another less-than-stellar opener for him in the Rangers home ballpark. "I dont like being on the pitching side of that, but fortunatelyy we outscored them and got the win, the main thing," said Lee, who had a solid spring.dddddddddddd "Jimmy hitting that grand slam busted it open. And we kept adding it on and we needed it, as it turned out." Lee got a nice ovation before pitching in Texas for the first time since starting for the Rangers in Game 5 of the 2010 World Series. The lefty also made a season-opening start here for Cleveland in 2009, when the then-reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed seven runs over five innings in a 9-1 loss. With starters Yu Darvish, Matt Harrison and Derek Holland on the disabled list, Scheppers became the first pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981 to make his first career start on opening day. Scheppers, who had 76 relief appearances last season, struck out two and walked three. "I was extremely disappointed. You bear down there. My pitches were around the zone," Scheppers said. "I was just trying to be too fine with everything, trying to hit corners. Unfortunately, I put the guys in a big hole." Texas went ahead 7-6 on Alex Rios three-run homer in the third, but Philly got even in the fourth on Chase Utleys RBI single, the first of his three hits. Phillies leadoff hitter Ben Revere also had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. He hit .305 last season, but missed the entire second half with foot problems. PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Brett Lawrie hit his first homer of the spring and the Toronto Blue Jays held AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays to just three hits in a 5-0 victory Friday. Erik Bedard, in his final bid to earn the Rays fifth rotation spot, struggled through 5 2-3 innings. He gave up four runs over 94 pitches, walking one and striking out four. Bedard is in a three-way competition with LHP Cesar Ramos and RHP Jake Odorizzi. Manager Joe Maddon said the decision on the fifth starter will come Saturday morning. "The other guys Im competing with are really good, (so) Im sure its a hard decision to make," Bedard said. "Theyre probably going to crunch some numbers and go with their gut feeling, and well see. When you dont have a guaranteed deal, you have to compete." Bedard signed a minor league deal with the Rays in February. As recently as March 18, he said he would opt out of his contract if he doesnt make the starting rotation, but he appeared to relax his position Friday. "Competition is always fun, but I guess everyone is ready to know," Bedard said. "I feel good, and maybe the numbers dont show, but they show for Ramos, who had a very good spring. Well have to see because I dont make the decision." Bedard has a 6.88 ERA over 17 innings with 13 strikeouts and two walks, while Odorizzi has a 3.75 ERA over 12 innings with eight strikeouts and six walks. Ramos has the best numbers of the competition: a 2.63 ERA over 13 1-2 innings with 11 strikeouts and a walk. "Its not easy," Maddon said. "Theyve all represented themselves extremely really well. We just got to try and figure out how this thing fits and whos going to give us the best chance to win coming out of the gate." STARTING TIME Rays: Opening-day starter David Price threw 106 pitches in a simulated game vs. minor league hitters Friday morning. Price pitched into the eighth inning and said he didnt reach a three-ball count until the last hitter in the seventh. "Curveball was extremely sharp -- it was a good day," Price said. "It was essentially a game, minus an anthem, walkout songs and umpires. Guys were out there trying to get on base and steal. It was good." Jays: Aaron Sanchez, the teams 21-year-old top pitching prospect who hasnt been above Class A, looked sharp in his first start of the spring Friday, throwing 5 1-3 scoreless innings, while giving up just three hits, walking three and striking out two over 69 pitches. Sanchez has a perfect 0.00 ERA over 12 1-3 innings of this spring, but will probably be sent to Double-A New Hampshire. "I wont be disappointed if thats what happens," Sanchez said. "Ill go there and keep working to get better." NAVARRO BACK IN AL EAST When the Blue Jays signed journeyman catcher Dioner Navarro to a two-year, $8 million deal in December, they put faith in the former Tampa Bay Rays All-Star would be able to catch more than a 100 games, something he hasnt done since 2009. "Im 100 per cent sure I can play all season," he said. "Physically, mentally and spiritually feel ready and they obviously have faith that I can, too." Navarro will be seeing familiar faces back in the AL East, and for Maddon, thats a good and bad thing. "He helped us become the Rays," Maddon said. "As a young player, he was very calm through some stressful situations and threw out some good baserunners in some big moments. I like him. Ive always like him and really happy its worked out well for him, though not liking that hes in our division now against us." Last season, Navarro started 89 games for the Chicago Cubs, hitting 13 homers with a .300 average. He knows coming back to the AL East will be a challenge. "Everyone always talks about the (AL) East -- always have, so its no different (to be back)," Navarro said. "You have to have your A game every day." TRAINERS ROOM Rays: Juan Carlos Oviedo said he wont be ready by opening day because of his visa issues getting into the country. Oviedo said hes feeling good and expects to pitch Sunday vs. Boston in Fort Myers. . Matt Joyce received more treatment for his stiff neck, and Maddon said he was uncertain about when he will return to the lineup. . Tyler Johnson Lightning Jersey .Simon will work with head coach Gord Dineen and associate coach Derek King behind the bench of the Toronto Maple Leafs American Hockey League affiliate for the 2014-15 season. The Buffalo Sabres continued to move assets for picks and the Minnesota Wild added a bona fide scoring winger to help their playoff push. Numbers Game looks into the Wild getting Matt Moulson from Buffalo. The Wild Get: LW Matt Moulson and LW Cody McCormick. Moulson, 30, has been a productive scoring winger throughout much of his career with the New York Islanders and, to a lesser degree, this season with the Buffalo Sabres, scoring 129 goals since the start of the 2009-2010 season, ranking 16th in the league over that span. He gives the Wild better complementary scoring, figuring to slot in on the second line behind Zach Parise on the left wing depth chart, perhaps with Mikko Koivu and Charlie Coyle, and giving Minnesota a nice offensive upgrade and while Moulson may not play as prominent a role as he did in Buffalo and New York, he could benefit from more favourable matchups as a result. Moulson, who comes at a cap hit of $3.133-million per season, will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, so he could end up being little more than a rental, which is fine because the price paid isnt too steep. McCormick is a tough 30-year-old forward who hasnt been able to hold down a regular spot in the lineup, yet comes at a cap hit of $1.2-million (on a deal that expires this summer). He offers some depth if the Wild feel a need for fourth line toughness, but he could just as easily be a spare part. The Sabres Get: RW Torrey Mitchell and second-round picks in 2014 and 2016. Mitchell, 29, hasnt been able to live up to his contract in Minnesota, playing a little over 10 minutes per game while hes signed for a cap hit of $1.dddddddddddd9-million per season, including a salary of $2.5-million next season. Mitchell has been crushed in possession terms, but hes also been asked to play difficult minutes, starting 34.6% of his shifts in the offensive zone. Going to Buffalo, it would be reasonable to expect Mitchell to take on a more significant role as a checking forward, playing more minutes and quite possibly handling tougher matchups defensively. Part of the reason that its possible to expect Mitchell to get a better opportunity is that his contract is a tad pricey for a fourth-liner but, like most of the forwards on the Sabres roster, Mitchell gets to use the rest of the season help establish expectations for next season. The Sabres get two more second-round picks to add to their deep pool of accumulated picks. The 2014 pick comes from Minnesota while the 2016 pick is via Winnipeg. A pair of second-round picks offer better than a 50% chance of netting an NHL player. It was no surprise that the Sabres would be moving Moulson and while Buffalo took on some salary in the deal, they added more draft picks, helping to offset the couple of second-round picks that they had included in their earlier trade with the Los Angeles Kings. (Sports Network) - Russell Wilson is a man of faith, family and friends. Its hard to believe the Seattle Seahawks quarterback used to be a bully. I used to beat people up. Truthfully, I used to beat people up a lot, Wilson told The Players Tribune months ago. Many of you readers probably think I have been Mr. Goody Two-Shoes my whole life, but honestly, I was a bully growing up. In elementary and middle school, I threw kids against the wall. I rubbed their heads in the dirt at recess. I bit them. I even knocked teeth out. Wilson had a lot of anger as an adolescent and was unsure how to distribute his temper for good. It wasnt until Wilson was 14 years old when he started to utilize his faith for others instead of himself. Wilson will admit hes not perfect, and the only person he can change is the one in the mirror. The reflection was different then, but now it resembles a role mode and Super Bowl champion. In a league where domestic violence, drug use and all sorts of controversy runs rampant, Wilson is the voice of reason. He transformed himself from a complicated kid to a responsible young man, and children across the world can learn from his story. Seattles prodigal son dedicates his life to children every Tuesday, when he takes time from his busy life as a quarterback to put smiles on the faces of those going through a battle more strenuous than a meaningless football game. Wilson was asked what his message to sick children would be during the circus that is known Super Bowl Media Day. To all kids in all of Childrens Hospital ... obviously, I go to Childrens Hospital every Tuesday in Seattle and unfortunately I had to miss today. But to all of the kids out there, Im just praying for you guys and praying for miracles. Keep the faith and be strong against cancer, thats something Ive been really big into in Seattle. Im just rooting for everybody. Wilson can be sure the Emerald City and surrounding areas are pulling for him and the Seahawks Sunday against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. The 26-year-old Wilson still has the bully deep inside and it shows solely on the playing field. Watching Wilson in person, especially on the road, is quite a spectacle because of the angst and aggravation he puts on the home fans. He has defeated the odds as a quarterback at 5-foot-11 and proves that size doesnt really matter. Wilson is a dual threat with his legs and strong arm, and knows kids are looking up to him in admiration. He has some advice for young players striving to be great. I think the advice that I got from my dad is keep things in perspective, have a great purpose in life, have great perspective and always persevere, Wilson said. I think for me, thats kind of been my story so far in my life. I just keep believing in the people I have around me. I surround myself around great people that really encourage me every day. Wilson said education was important and helped him change his life in a positive matter. Sports is something that comes last for Wilson. That may seem irrelevant because hes a Pro Bowl and Super Bowl quarterback, but being a better person than a signal caller opens the pearly gates wider at the end. What is Wilsons perspective on his legacy both on and off the field? In terms of my legacy on the field, I want to be considered a winner. Thats ultimately the goal in terms of playing quarterback, is win, win, win. Thats all that really matters at the end of the day, Wilson said. In terms of my legacy off the field, I want to be a Christian man that helps lead and helps change lives and helps serve other people. Its not about me, you know? Its not about me and its about just helping other people. So thats kind of where I keep my focus. One of the brightest young stars in the NFL, Wilson uses his athletic gift to glorify his faith in God. He knows people look up to athletes and that its imperative to be a good role model. Wilson admits hes not perfect and is just trying to do the right thing. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll embeds a team-first mentality on his players and back-to-back Super Bowl appearances is proof the players are listening. Wilson is the biggest ambassador for Carrolls ideology with his competitive nature and despite to make those around him better people. When Wilson looks across the field Sunday in Arizona, he will see a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady. Wilson grew up watching Brady, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and his personal favorite, Drew Brees. Wilson beat Manning in last years Super Bowl and has a chance to knock off two QBs who will have busts in Canton, Ohio. Im not sure if its about just playing against those guys, but winning back- to-back Super Bowls is history in itself, Wilson said. But also to play Peyton Manning and to play a guy like Tom Brady ... like I said, two of the best to ever play the game ... I think its special just because youll never forget it. You want to play the best. To be the best, you have to beat the best, and its going to be exciting for us. Wilson is only in his third season in the NFL and will be the youngest quarterback in league history to start two Super Bowls. Wilson is 42-13 as a starter, including a 6-1 mark in the playoffs. He won his only start against New England on Oct. 14, 2012 in a 24-23 victory and tossed the go-ahead touchdown pass to Sidney Rice with 1:18 to go. He had three TD passes and no interceptions, while Brady passed for 395 yards with two scores and two picks. Sundays QB matchup will feature two different styles, as Brady is a more standard pocket passer and Wilson uses his mobility. Russell and Tom Brady are both great winners, Carroll said. Tom has had a long time to prove that. Russell is at the early stages of proving that to the world. But hes got a chance to be similar. If Wilson wins on Sunday hell have one less ring than Brady. And that deserves a lofty pay raise, right? That could present challenges, according to Seattle general manager John Schneider via 710 ESPN. Wilson will be eligible for a new deal in the offseason which could fetch up to $20 million a season and prevent the team from bolstering the roster further. Quarterback is the most important position in all of sports and salaries should resemble such. Wilson isnt concerned about finances and will cash in down the road. The focus is on winning a second Super Bowl. Its about the New England Patriots and bringing another championship to the Pacific Northwest for Wilson. Teammates, family and fans of all ages will be in his corner Sunday in Super Bowl XLIX and he doesnt want to let them down. I think the biggest goal is for us to win because of all the hard work weve put in this year. The journey that weve been on has been unbelievable. Weve had a great journey and weve come a long way, so to get back back-to-back years is pretty special. So hopefully we get this win. ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Kansas City Royals have gotten some relief help, acquiring veteran reliever Jason Frasor from the Texas Rangers for Triple-A right-hander Spencer Patton. The trade was made Wednesday, the same day Patton was in the Triple-A All-Star game. The Rangers assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock. Frasor was 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 38 appearances this season, his second in Texas. The right-hander spent nine seasons with Toronto (2004-12), returning to the Blue Jays after being traded to the White Sox in July 2011 and finishing that season in Chicago. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said catcher Geovany Soto will be activated from the disabled list before Fridays game at Toronto and set for his season debut in the majors after knee surgery. The injury-plagued Rangers (38-57) went into the All-Star break with the worst record in the major leagues. They were 21 games behind AL West-leading Oakland. Daniels said the deal with the Royals is "just a good baseball trade and we like the return" and not any indication that Texas will start unloading potential free-agent players, such as the 36-year-old Frasor. "Its not necessarily related to anything else we may do," Daniels said. "Were certainly going to listen. I think the closer guys are to free aagency, its just the more natural those conversations are to take place.dddddddddddd But were still going to make good baseball trades at this point." Kansas City (48-46) is second in the AL Central, 6 1/2 games behind Detroit. To make room on their roster for Frasor, the Royals optioned Louis Coleman to Omaha and designated utility player Jimmy Paredes for assignment. Patton is 4-3 with a 4.08 ERA and 14 saves in 34 relief appearances for Triple-A Omaha this season. The 26-year-old righty has 60 strikeouts in 46 1-3 innings while holding opponents to a .161 batting average. In 624 major league games, Frasor is 31-35 with 36 saves and a 3.65 ERA. Soto had surgery for torn cartilage in his right knee after getting hurt near the end of spring training. Before that, he had been limited to only six spring games because of a surgical procedure on his left foot. The Rangers acquired Soto from the Chicago Cubs at the non-waiver trading deadline in 2012. He hit .245 with nine homers in 54 games last season for the Rangers. Soto was arrested last week and charged with misdemeanour possession of marijuana under two ounces after a traffic stop by police in Grapevine, Texas. A post-season that started with the Kings having to dig themselves out of a three-game hole against San Jose ended Friday night in a 3-2 double-overtime triumph over the New York Rangers to seal their second Cup in three seasons. The final lasted five games, with three going to overtime -- including two double OT contests. It was the only playoff series that didnt go the distance for the Kings. Alec Martinezs winner at 14:43 of the second overtime was a fitting conclusion to a post-season slog that saw the Kings run a gauntlet of Western Conference heavyweights before dispatching the speedy Rangers in the final. It was the 26th game of the Los Angles playoff run, matching the single-year league record set by Philadelphia in 1987 and Calgary in 2004, who both lost seven-game series in the final. L.A. did set a record for most playoff games by a Cup winner. The Kings had to go through a murderers row in the West just to get to the final after finishing 10th in the league with a 46-26-8 record and 100 points. Los Angles had to get by San Jose (111 points), Anaheim (116) and defending champion Chicago (107) in one of the most gruelling post-season routes on record. They overcame a 3-2 series deficit in the second round against Anaheim and rallied from 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 deficits in Game 7 of the Western Conference final in Chicago. Their latest campaign lasted 115 games, counting seven pre-season, 82 regular-season and a record 26 post-season contests. Los Angeles went 7-0 in playoff elimination games along the way. Only the 1975 Islanders won more (eight). The Kings are only the fourth team in playoff history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit in rallying to beat the Sharks in the first round. And they are the first team to play -- and win -- three Game 7s on the road in a single post-season. Throughout it all burned the belief that if the Kings played their game, they knew they were tough to beat. "We really earned it," said forward Justin Williams, named winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after opening the scoring with his ninth goal and 25th point of the post-season. "Its been a wild year," said forward Jeff Carter. "A lot of hockey, a lot of ups and downs ... We had to dig deep. We really had to battle." Like teammate Drew Doughty, Carter won Olympic gold and hoisted the Cup in 2014. "A hell of a year," he said. "Couldnt ask for anything more." Captain Dustin Brown hoisted the Cup first, then handed it off to veteran defenceman Robyn Regehr, a spectator since suffering an injury in Game 1 of the Anaheim series. Brown sacrificed his body to get to the Cup, delivering 125 hits in the post-season. The native of Ithaca, N.Y., is the first U.S.-born captain to win multiple Stanley Cups. Family and friends packed the ice as fans pressed their nose to the glass to watch the post-game partying. Coach Darryl Sutter watched with a smile, his son Christopher -- who has Down Syndrome -- hoisting the Cup in the celebration. "You got to give these guys full marks," he said simply of his players. The Kings squandered 3-0 series leads both times en route to hoisting the Cup. But they got the job done in five games -- three wins coming via overtime -- this time compared to six against New Jersey in 2012. Los Angeles remarkable road to this Cup was long and tortuous. It was an edge-of-your-seat record-setting ride though all-comers that will be hard to beat. Martinez ended the longest game in Kings history, surpassing Game 5 of the 2013 Western Conference final (91:40), by wristing home a rebound of a Tyler Toffoli shot to seal the Cup. "I havent been married and I havent had kids but as far as Im concerned so far this is the greatest feeling in the world," Martinez said. "It came out pretty quick," he said of the rebound. "I just tried to get it on net then I blacked out." It was the 17th Stanley Cup-clinching overtime goal in NHL history. Martinez eliminated the Chicago Blackhawks in OT in Game 7 of the Western Conference final at Chicago on June 1. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he joins Martin Gelinas (Calgary, 2004) and Adam Henrique (New Jersey, 2012) as the only players in NHL history to notch two series-clinching overtime goals in one post-season. Amazingly Los Angeles did not hold a lead in the first three games of the final. The Kings led for just 14.6 per cent of the first four games -- a 40:01 stretch that was all in Game 3. The Kings trailed 2-0 the first two games of the series but rallied both times to win in OT. The Rangers probably deserved better. "Obviously everybodys very disappointed in the outcome," said New York coach Alain Vigneault whose team went past Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Montreal en route to the Rangers first final in 20 years. "You go into this hoping that you dont regret anything. We put it out there," he added. "We gave our best shot, best effort. Three games here all went to OT. What can I say?" The never-say-die Kings, who trailed by two goals four times in the first two games of the final, proved once again that the third period is their domain. They have four victories thhis post-season when trailing after two periods.dddddddddddd And in mounting the latest comeback, they put an end to New Yorks remarkable 5-0 record in elimination games. The win improved the Kings playoff overtime record in 2014 to 5-2. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist kept the Rangers in the game for the second outing in a row. The elegant Swede stood on his head for much of the evening, especially when push came to shove. "During the regular time he made some big saves. I thought in the overtime, though, thats when we played our better hockey of the night," said Vigneault. "Had some real good looks. Both goaltenders were outstanding." Lundqvist ended the evening face down in disbelief. He may still be shaking his head. The contest started slowly and took its time to boil, but finished in nail-biting, adrenalin-pumping end-to-end fashion. The third period was all Kings as a goal by Marian Gaborik pulled Los Angeles even at 2-2 some eight minutes in. Gaborik knocking in a rebound of a Doughty wrister from the point at 7:56. It was his 14th of the playoffs -- following a season in which he had 11 goals in 41 games. Los Angeles outshot New York 12-3 in the period and 29-15 in regulation time. The shots were 42-25 for L.A. after four periods of hockey and 51-30 when the dust settled. Overtime was a thrill ride as both teams hit the post and Los Angeles poured it on. The Kings also had to kill off a minor penalty in each overtime. New York defenceman Ryan McDonagh hit the post with a blast from the blue-line in the first OT period. Toffoli also rang a shot off the post, some 13 minutes in. Lundqvist stopped Williams twice at point-blank range during one sequence late in overtime as the Kings turned the screws. Then the Rangers mounted two assaults on the L.A. goal before Chris Kreider fired wide on a semi-breakaway. In the second overtime, a Dan Girardi shot clipped the outside of the Kings post and L.A. goalie Jonathan Quick make several key saves. Kreider and Brian Boyle scored for the Rangers in a 3:53 stretch late in the second period -- the first on the power-play, the second short-handed -- as New York clawed its way back to lead 2-1 after 40 minutes that saw just 12 shots on the L.A. goal. That New York outburst silenced the sellout crowd of 18,713 at Staples Center. The Rangers were 11-1 when leading after two periods in the playoffs and had won 39 of 43 games in that scenario including the regular season. But L.A. refused to go quietly. The Kings have outscored their opponents 30-16 in the third period this post-season, including 3-0 in the Cup final. Fridays game was the 93rd game of the 2014 playoffs, surpassing the previous single-year record of 92 established in 1991. It was also the 63rd post-season game for the Kings dating to 2012, tying the NHL record for most games over a three-year span (Dallas, 1998-00; Detroit: 2007-09). It was the 25th post-season game for the Rangers, who finished 12th in the league at 45-31-6 and 96 points but still made it to their first final in 20 years by eliminating Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Montreal. Going into Friday, the Rangers were 5-0 when facing elimination. Lundqvist led the way in such games with a 1.00 goals-against average and .971 save percentage. The Rangers record in elimination matches is now 11-3 dating back to 2012. New York hadnt got a shot on target by the time the Kings went ahead at 6:04, with Williams scoring on a deft backhand as linemates Jarret Stoll and Dwight King poked away at Lundqvist after a shot from the point by Willie Mitchell. It took New York almost eight minutes to record a shot on goal. That followed a third period in Game 4 in which they only managed one shot. It took the Kings some 27 minutes to crack double digits in shots. New York, frustrated for stretches by the L.A. forecheck, was stuck at seven. The New York power play, 1-for-19 in the final up until then, finally clicked at 15:37 of the second period as Kreider tipped in a McDonagh feed from the faceoff circle to tie it at 1-1. McDonagh threaded the pass through three Kings to set up the goal, which came on the Rangers 11th shot of the night. McDonagh, who turned 25 on Friday, becomes the first player to record a point on his birthday in the Cup final since Jari Kurri did it in 1990 for the Oilers. Boyle then scored shorthanded to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 19:30. The big man deftly roofed the puck after a nice curl-and-drag past Doughty, with New Yorks Dominic Moore in the penalty box for hooking. The speedy Carl Hagelin triggered the play, beating defenceman Slava Voynov to the puck, as Boyle notched his third of the post-season. The Rangers third short-handed goal of the playoffs had Moore celebrating in the box. The Kings ranked 26th in the league in average goals per game during the regular season, averaging 2.42 a game. It helped that they led the league with just 2.05 goals against per game. They found their scoring touch in the playoffs, leading all teams with an average of 3.40 goals a game going into Friday. It was the 26th overtime game of the playoffs, tied for the third-highest total in one year (the record of 28 was set in 1993). Los Angeles is the 17th team in NHL history to win the Cup in overtime and the first to do so at home since the 1908 Islanders. TORONTO -- To prepare his players for the biggest game of their lives, Raptors coach Dwane Casey borrowed from the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks. "I go back to my experience. (Mavericks coach) Rick Carlisle has a thing, Wipe off the blackboard. Just wipe it off," said Casey, an assistant under Carlisle on that 2011 Mavs squad. "Nothing on the blackboard is really going to make a difference at this time of year. At this game, Game 7, its mental." The Raptors host the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday in a game that will either advance them into the second round of the post-season for just the second time in the franchises 19-year history, or send them home. Sundays winner faces the two-time NBA defending champion Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals beginning Tuesday in Miami. By wiping the blackboard, Casey trusts the Raptors that have scraped and clawed to so many huge wins in this unexpected season of success wont go down without a fight Sunday. The coach likens his team to Freddie Krueger -- the unkillable villain from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" movies and a name Casey has mentioned after virtually every unlikely victory this season. "Its our approach," Casey said Saturday. "Its our toughness. Its our persistence on getting open. Our persistence in defending. Our persistence in going for loose balls, rebounds. Thats what this game is going to be about." Casey had the Raptors at the Air Canada Centre for a long session Saturday, the morning after a woeful 97-83 loss to the Nets in Game 6 at Brooklyn. In a series that has been feisty since before the first ball was even thrown up, Nets centre Andray Blatche fired the latest shot Saturday night. "We guarantee were going to go there and take care of business and go to Miami," Blatche told reporters at Barclays Center. The Raptors shrugged off the comment. "I dont care what he said," said Raptors all-star DeMar DeRozan. "He can say what he wants, honestly. He can go out there and say hes going to hit the lottery tomorrow, I could give a hell." Raptors backup guard Greivis Vasquez added: "I dont know who does he think he is. Hes not KG (Kevin Garnett) or Paul Pierce or Jason Kidd. Were not going to listen to his nonsense. Hes gotta earn that, and he hasnt yet." Vasquez said the Raptors are focused only on themselves, and with good reason. They could have closed out the series Friday night, but instead slogged out to their worst opening quarter of the series Saturday night, and trailed by as much as 26 points. Once again, Casey showed his players video footage of the bouncing and cheering mass of fans that turned out to watch the game at Maple Leaf Square. "This is what youre playing for," Casey told them. While the vastly-inexperienced Raptors battled nerves early on in the quarter-final series, Casey would have liked to have seen some Friday night. "I wanted nerves in the first quarter because we came out like we were in never-never-land," the coach said. "We want the passion. We want the feelings. I dont mind nerves because a couple of times up and down the floor you get hit, you get knocked down, those nerves go away. "Weve just got to come out with a stronger constitution out of the locker-room." DeRozan, who has shone in his first-ever play appearance, said theres more pressure on the Nets. Brooklyn assembled a star-studded squad with its sights set on an NBA title, signing all-stars Pierce and Garnett in the off-season. "Yeah, man. We aint got no 100 million, whatever payroll they got," DeRozan said -- the figure is actually US$180 million-plus with payroll and taxes. "Hey, thats all on them. At the end of the day they have more to lose than us." The Raptors know that this season will be considered a success even if they dont make it to the second round. They were all but written off when the season began, and played to the low expectations until the blockbuster seven-player deal in December that sent Rudy Gay to Sacramento. The turnaround was remarkable. They went on to win their second Atlantic Division title, earning the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. The players -- the majority of whom had little to no playoff experience when this series began -- are soaking up every moment of their post-season run. "Honestly, this is what you live for, man -- to play and be in moments like this, honestly, because they last forever," DeRozan said. "Memories like that are going to last way after Im finished playing so youve definitely got to take advantage of it and understand youve got to go out there and play youre A-game." Vasquez was asked how exciting it is to play a Game 7 at home. "See, thats the best question," he replied. "Thats the best question. Were in a position right now to really make a solid push and then shut everybody up. You dont have to talk about our experience or anything like that, were going to get it done. "This is what you dream about. Thats when you go play at the park, you think about Game 7 against those guys. Its just fun." Chuck Hayes, acquired in the Sacramento trade, has played in two Game 7s with the Houston Rockets. The Rockets lost them both, and he talked to the team about playing with that win-or-go-home urgency and energy. "You should be exhausted by the time the game is over with," Hayes said. "You should be exhausted every timeout because the intensity is going to be risen, the atmosphere, everything. You probably wont even be able to hear yourself think. Its a fun experience though." DeRozan, who likes to go to the Air Canada Centre to shoot baskets late at night, said he planned to head home after practice Saturday and have a nap. Hed then watch Friday nights Game 6 again, and "get mentally ready for (Sunday)." Vasquez, a father of two children, said he would spend Saturday night relaxing with his family to take his mind off the game. "I dont really like thinking about the game, like Ahhh, putting so much pressure on myself," he said. "I think when you relax and let the game come to you -- obviously, you focus, you get your rest, you watch other NBA games -- thats the way I do it. "Im not going to lie, its a big game. Ive been in a Game 7 before to go in the conference finals and that was one of the best experiences I ever had. And (Sunday), I know for sure its going to be the best game of my life." Gal controlled the flight of her ball and picked up three birdies on the back nine at Tiburon Golf Club, giving her a 3-under 69 and a three-shot lead going into the weekend of an LPGA Tour finale that pays $700,000 to the winner. The 28-year-old German has spent much of the year working on a shorter swing and hitting a variety of shapes and trajectories, and that was put to good use in the blustery conditions. And the fact she opened with a 64 didnt hurt. "My advantage was yesterday," Gal said. "Shooting 8-under was big. Today it was hard for everybody to catch up. Thats what gave me that three-shot lead." Gal was at 11-under 133. Sun Young Yoo, the former Kraft Nabisco champion, had a 68 and was alone in second. The degree of difficult was best measured by what Yoo considered her best shot of the round -- a 6-iron on the 18th hole that didnt even hit the green. "Im very pleased with how I played," Yoo said. "I recovered very well." Lydia Ko, the 16-year-old from New Zealand making her pro debut, played her final 10 holes without a birdie and finished at 71, leaving her nine shots behind. "I thought I played much better today than yesterday, but the score was the same," Ko said. "I left a couple of my putts short just in front of the hole. Then when I got my speed right, the direction was wrong, so that was kind of frustrating." Gal hasnt won since her inaugural title at the Kia Classic two years ago, and her biggest disappointment this year was not getting picked for the Solheim Cup team. She felt her game was turning around, but not in time to warrant a captains pick. Instead, she might have to settle for the biggest payoff in womens golf. To win this week would amount to one-third of her career earnings. "Its easier for people to say, I dont care about the money, I only want to play well. But they dont mean it, right?" she said with a smile. "But Im not out here to play for money. Im out here to play with heart and to inspire others. Its a huge purse. But at the end of the day, when you win a tournament, youre happy about fighting and overcoming fear.dddddddddddd" Cristie Kerr had to fight plenty hard to get another 69 and lead the group at 6-under 138, five shots behind. Kerr thought she took take a 6-iron through a gap in the trees on the par-5 opening hole, and instead knocked it into the water. She had to drop in pine straw, and sent her fifth shot over the green. Her chip hit the pin, allowing her to tap in for a double bogey. What followed was a "horrendous" shot at the third (bogey) and a "horrible" shot on the fifth into a bunker. But she saved par, and that changed her thinking. "I wasnt going to let this tournament go down the toilet," she said. Kerr then ran off three straight birdies, knocked in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 12th, and then holed an 80-foot putt for eagle on the 17th that put her back in the mix. "On 17, I mean I was just due. I dont know how to describe it any other way than that," she said. Morgan Pressel had a 67, the low score of the second round. Four players failed to break 80. Inbee Park was within a shot of the lead early in the round, reaching 7 under, until she fell back to a 72 and was seven shots behind. Park headed off to rehearse her speech one last time before accepting LPGA player of the year at the awards dinner Friday night. Most players are nervous to stand before a big room for such a big moment. "Ive had a lot more pressure," Park said with a smile, a reference to going after a fourth straight major earlier this year at St. Andrews. Stacey Lewis (73) and Suzann Pettersen (72) were in the group at even-par 144, significant only as it relates to the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average. Pettersen would have to finish nine shots higher than the American to win the award. Gal stayed in the lead most of the day, and one last birdie stretched her lead. She would expect to make birdie on the 17th, the shortest of the par 5s. Just not this way. She hooked her tee shot into the trees and wasnt sure she could find it. "Happy to find my ball," she said. "Had a swing -- very happy. Had an 8-iron and thought, Lets go for the pin, and almost holed it out. Made the putt (from 15 feet). All very simple Never in doubt." PINEHURST, N.C. -- Jason Millard was disqualified from the U.S. Open on Saturday after reporting a self-imposed penalty for grounding his club in a bunker in sectional qualifying. "We commend Jason for bringing this matter to our attention," said Daniel B. Burton, USGA vice-president and chairman of the championship committee. "At this time, we have no recourse but to disqualify him under the Rules of Golf and specifically Rule 34-1b." Millard, a former Middle Tennessee State player who qualified in Memphis, Tennessee, with two rounds of 68, was playing his third shot on the 18th hole on Colonial Country Clubs North Course -- his 27th hole of the day -- when the penalty occurred. "Im pretty sure I grounded my club in the bunker," Millard said. "I didnt see anything for sure, but I felt something and I saw a small indentation. It happened so fast, I really dont know 100 per cent, but deep down, I believe I did. I couldnt find peace about it. For five days, I practiced and I couldnt get it off my mind. Its heart-breaking, but what I was feeling in my heart didnt feel right. Its the right decision and I am sticking with it." PORTLAND, Ore. - Gaston Fernandez scored on a header in the 85th minute to pull the Portland Timbers into a 3-3 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. There were a flurry of goals in the final 10 minutes. Portlands Will Johnson tied the match at 2-all in the 80th minute. Ethan Finlays shot deflected off a Portland player for an own goal for Columbus a minute later. The draw snapped a three-match losing streak for Columbus, but the Crew (3-4-4) remain winless in their last eight matches. Columbus hadnt scored a goal since April 26 in a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls. Federico Higuain had a pair of goals for the Crew and Maximiliano Urruti opened the scoring for Portland (1-3-7) in the fifth minute. Portland defender Alvas Powell was sent off with a red card for a foul on Chad Barson in the 34th minute, putting the Timbers down a man for the rest of the match. The Timbers finished atop the Western Conference standings last season, but have just one victory this year even though they havent dropped a match at Providence Park this season. The Timbers were coming off a 1-1 draw at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy last weekend, with both goals coming in stoppage time. Columbus was without defender Michael Parkhurst, who is training with the U.S. national team in advance of the World Cup. Fellow defender Waylon Francis has been called up for duty with the Costa Rican national team. The Timbers were without midfielder Diego Chara and defender Michael Harrington because of injuries in last weeks draw with the Galaxy.
