NEW YORK -- Michael Taylors parents planned to come see him this weekend, so they missed his smashing start. At least the rookie had a proud souvenir to show them -- barely. Taylor homered in his big league debut, setting off a silly sequence to retrieve the keepsake, and the Washington Nationals backed Doug Fister with four long shots Tuesday night in a 7-1 romp over the New York Mets. "Definitely better than I imagined," Taylor said, his cellphone buzzing every few seconds with happy messages. Bryce Harper homered early, then Anthony Rendon, Ian Desmond and Taylor connected in the sixth inning as the NL East leaders won their ninth straight at Citi Field. Promoted from Triple-A over the weekend, Taylor singled in his first at-bat and later hit a two-run drive the opposite way at one of the majors most spacious parks. A ball boy ran out to right field to pick up Taylors home run ball, but mistakenly tossed it to a young fan in the stands. Alerted to his error, the ball boy and a couple of security guards quickly worked out a trade of another ball to reclaim the prize. Taylor said he heard about the scramble, but didnt see it. He admitted he was "kind of numb" standing at first base after his first hit, and was "just trying to breathe and relax and enjoy it" after his home run. The balls from both moments were in his locker following the game. Taylor finished 2 for 4. The 23-year-old outfielder hit a combined .315 with 22 homers and 35 stolen bases in the minors this season, almost all of it at Double-A. Taylor got to start while star outfielder Jayson Werth got an MRI on his aching right shoulder. The team didnt have the results on that exam right after the game. Fister (12-3) came back from a 25-minute rain delay and pitched seven shutout innings. He gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out three. Fister also hit a single for good measure after a 1-for-30 start at the plate this year. "Doug throws what he wants when he wants and where he wants," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "When you go up there, especially when youre looking at our lineup four through nine, theyre all pretty young, and he can carve you up and he does." Fister sounded more excited about Taylors performance than his own. "Hell always remember Day 1," the veteran pitcher said, adding, "as a young guy, youve got to rag him a little bit." Fister was on deck when Taylor homered. As Taylor passed by on the way back to the dugout, Fister wisecracked to him: "Oh, its that easy, huh?" Asdrubal Cabrera hit two doubles and a single as the Nationals improved to 23-4 at Citi Field dating to 2011. The only Washington starter who didnt get on base was leadoff man Denard Span, ending his 14-game hitting streak and his string of reaching safely at 36 games. Rafael Montero (0-3) was tagged for three homers and five runs in five-plus innings. He was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day after impressive rookie Jacob deGrom went on the disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis. Mets star David Wright singled twice, giving him an 11-game hitting streak. TRAINERS ROOM Nationals: Manager Matt Williams said Werths shoulder was "inflamed and sore," yet added, "I dont think its a DL situation." UP NEXT Fresh off his 200th career win, Mets RHP Bartolo Colon (11-9, 3.97) starts Wednesday night vs. Nationals RHP Jordan Zimmermann (7-5, 3.06). Desmond has tagged Colon, going 3 for 6 with two homers lifetime against him. Zimmermann is 1-1 in his last six starts. DES-TINY Desmond hit his 20th home run, the third straight year hes reached the mark. He connected as the Nats hit three homers in an inning for the first time since Sept. 5, 2012. HOME AWAY FROM HOME This was the fifth time that the Nationals have hit at least four home runs in a game at Citi Field, all in the last two seasons. The Mets have had a total of five games with at least four homers at Citi Field since the park opened in 2009. STRIKE FORCE Williams led the majors with 43 homers for the Giants on Aug. 12, 1994, when a players strike started and wound up wiping out the rest of the season and the World Series. Williams was on a pace for nearly 61 home runs, which wouldve matched the then-record held by Roger Maris. Williams said the strike was painful at the time, but that the effects helped benefit the game in later years. As for his own chance at history, "To say I felt like I had a lost season isnt accurate," Williams said. So, does he think he wouldve reached 61? "I dont think so," he said. "No way." You can watch the game live in the first half of a doubleheader on TSN and TSN GO at 3:00pm et/Noon pt.The NFL Combine wrapped up this week and the impact on the mock drafts and predictions around the league is already being felt. While some players merely solidified their standing on big boards and mock drafts, several others saw their Combine results either boost or drop their placing in the mind of scouts and general managers across the league. Some notes from the NFL Combine Two-Horse Race A look at the most recent batch of mock drafts has two players showing up more often than any others at the top spot. One wont surprise you – South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney – but one certainly could – UCF quarterback Blake Bortles. While questions about his work ethic may knock Clowney out of the top spot, his blistering 40-yard dash time (4.53) ensures that if he does fall, it wont be very far. Bortles meanwhile impressed both on the field and off. Almost all draftniks and experts consider the once unknown QB to be a legit top end prospect. Of the 15 expert mock drafts gathered for TSN.cas database, Bortles had the most first overall picks of any player. Quarterback Battle While mock drafters are slotting Bortles into the first pick (owned by the Houston Texans) more than any other quarterback, that doesnt necessarily mean hes viewed as the top quarterback. Of the 15 expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, Bortles had just the third highest average draft position. First was Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel with an ADP of 3.1 followed by Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater (3.9) and then Bortles at 4.7. Dont Forget Me While hes not in the same boat as Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles, Fresno States Derek Carr reportedly had a very strong NFL Combine showing, particularly while interviewing with teams. At this point Carr appears to be a mid-first round pick at best but his showing has some quarterback-needy teams considering passing on one of the top three QBs early in the draft to fill other positions, while hoping to land Carr later on. There are reports the gap between the Big Three and Carr is not very wide. Moving Up The biggest benefactors of the NFL Combine, among the early picks at least, were Auburn OT Greg Robinson and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. Robinsons athleticism seems to have solidified him as the top offensive tackle on the board and boosted his projected status from Top 10 pick to Top 5. Robinson could even hear his name as early as second overall to the St. Louis Rams. Mack is another former potential Top 10 pick that could easily find his way iinto the Top 5 come May.dddddddddddd While his destination is hard to pinpoint at this point in the evaluation process, respected NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock said he would consider Mack with the first overall pick. Thats high praise! Moving Down The rise of Robinson and Mack is having adverse effects on players of similar talent at the same position of the two in Jake Matthews and Anthony Barr. Once considered two of the top three players in the draft (alongside Clowney) by some, Matthews and Barr are no longer locks to be Top 5 picks and thats in large part due to Robinson proving hes the better offensive tackle, and Mack proving hes far closer to Clowney than originally thought. At this point it wouldnt be shocking to see Barr fall out of the Top 10 picks (ADP currently 8.9) while even Matthews could see himself suffer the same fate (ADP currently 5.9) the way things are playing out. To be fair, in Barrs case, Mack isnt the sole reason the UCLA pass rushers stock is falling; only 15 reps on the bench press could scare away a few teams. Lions targeting a CB The Detroit Lions need help at cornerback and most draftniks expect them to get it at the draft. Of the expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, 86% of them have the Lions taking a cornerback 10th overall. The only question in their minds is if it will be Oklahoma States Justin Gilbert, taken by the Lions in 53% of mock drafts, or Michigan States Darqueze Dennard, taken by Detroit in 33% of mock drafts. The current draft landscape lays out with a slight drop off after the top nine players. From there its still anyones guess as to who leads the second tier of players. Many mock drafters see the Lions filling a need and taking whichever cornerback they have ranked the highest. Wide Receiver Battle This position battle is unlike the quarterback battle as Clemson standout Sammy Watkins is the clear cut top pass catcher in this years draft. The battle is for the second best receiver with USCs Marqise Lee losing his spot to Texas A&Ms Mike Evans in 80% of mock drafts gathered. The receiver class is very deep this year with good pass catchers still likely to be available midway through the second round and if Lee finds himself engulfed in the second tier of receivers, hes no lock to hear his name on the first day of the NFL Draft. The true battle could be between Evans and North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. The difference between their ADP is currently only a couple of picks (Evans: 13.8 to Ebron:16.0). It appears that due diligence is being done to bring an NFL franchise to Toronto. In a letter received by TSN, members of the citys corporate community are being asked for feedback on the potential of an NFL franchise and stadium in the Greater Toronto Area. The letter, which was sent from CSL International - a sports facility planning and advisory firm based in Texas - states that Toronto is "at the forefront of potential relocation markets" for the NFL. While the letter also states that no decisions have been made regarding bringing an NFL team to Toronto, it includes a survey to assess how it may provide an "exciting experience for fans and the corporate community alike." The letter did not specify whose interests were being represented. The 25-year-old Spaniard, who joined United from Chelsea in January, scored twice, including directly from a free kick, to take his tally to three goals in his last two games. "I think he has made us better," United manager David Moyes said. "He hasnt had the goals in the earlier games, but I really thought he played fine in the games. "But recently he has started the get the goals and, more importantly, assists as well. Over the last few seasons in the Premier League, Juan Mata is one of the best assist-makers and he has always got himself a good tally of goals." Showing that United can cope without injured striker Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and substitute Adnan Januzaj added further goals in the second half. Moyes United moved up to sixth place, while Newcastle stayed ninth. The priority for Unitted is to follow up a 1-1 home draw with Bayern Munich with a victory in Germany on Wednesday to reach the Champions League semifinals.dddddddddddd Moyes made wholesale changes for the trip to Newcastle with only three of the players who started against Bayern Munich in midweek -- Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini -- retained with one eye on Munich. However, once Mata had fired them ahead from a 39th-minute free kick which Magpies manager Alan Pardew felt should never have been awarded, United never looked back. Mata added a second from close range five minutes after the restart and Javier Hernandez put the result beyond doubt 15 minutes later, before substitute Januzaj wrapped up a comfortable win with the help of a deft assist by the Spain international. It handed Newcastle a seventh loss in 10 league games. "Its tough. I understand the fans frustration," manager Alan Pardew said. We all have some opinions on the players that come up in daily trade rumours as the NHL trade deadline approaches. This player is a sniper, that ones over-the-hill; this one can still dominate the game, that one is riding the coattails of superior linemates. Then, the deals will start coming and well have to see how those players fit in their new locations. Before the trade flurry beings, though, what do some of the advanced stats say about the players considered in play leading up to the NHL trade deadline? For some, there will be no surprises -- they are who we thought they were! -- but, for others, maybe there are some reasons to have second thoughts. After some digging on www.behindthenet.ca, www.extraskater.com and stats.hockeyanalysis.com, heres a fancy stats look at some of the more notable trade candidates: Thomas Vanek, LW, N.Y. Islanders - There arent any grand surprises in Vaneks profile. Hes a top-line scoring winger, so he tends to face high quality competition (ie. other teams best defencemen), but those matchups have tended to get the better of Vanek in terms of possession stats, leaving him with a negative relative Corsi even though the ice should be tilted in his favour due to starting 59.7% of his shifts in the offensive zone. Of course, the line of Vanek, John Tavares and Kyle Okposo is skilled enough that they can be sub-50% in possession terms and still score more goals and, in Vaneks case, hes on for 40 goals for and 26 against during 5-on-5 play this season. Ryan Callahan, RW, N.Y. Rangers - While the Rangers captain has seen his ice-time reduced under new head coach Alain Vigneault, he still has okay possession stats while facing quality opposition. What is somewhat surprising about Callahan is that hes starting a disproportionate percentage (61.3%) of his shifts in the offensive zone. Considering his reduced power play role, those offensive zone starts are likely due to his spot on Brad Richards wing. Andrew MacDonald, D, N.Y. Islanders - For years, MacDonald has been a favourite on the underrated, or at least underpaid, lists because hes playing big minutes while making $550,000 per season. Now that hes approaching unrestricted free agency, and his stats come under more scrutiny, its clear that MacDonald is getting destroyed in puck possession terms and when one compares his with-or-without-you stats, its plain to see that MacDonald is being asked to do too much for the Islanders. The hope for an acquiring team would be that MacDonald could fit maybe as a No. 4 or No. 5 on a contender and, of course, his contract would be easy to accomodate for teams that are close to the cap. Steve Ott, C, Buffalo - Playing for the Sabres has forced Ott to play more than he should, because Buffalo doesnt have enough quality options, so he gets chewed up in terms of puck possession, but its not out of the realm of possibility that, in a third-line role on a contender, Ott would have a better chance to succeed. Marian Gaborik, RW, Columbus - Theres not much of a sample to work with, considering Gaborik has been injured for much of the season, but in the 18 games that he has played, Gaborik hasnt been particularly effective though he has started an abnormal percentage (47.9%) of his shifts in the defensive zone after three straight seasons with more than 60% offensive zone starts. To be fair, any team that is trying to acquire Gaborik (or any player, really) is going to be looking at more than what hes done this season, so subpar possesion numbers this year cant be considered the whole picture of his contribution. Like Vanek, for instance, Gaborik tends to have a higher on-ice shooting percentage than most, so his goal results tend to be better than the shot data indicates. Sam Gagner, C, Edmonton - This has been a season to forget for Gagner, starting with the broken jaw he suffered in the preseason, thanks to Zack Kassian. Gagner has generally been getting thumped when it comes to puck possession and, while he has plenty of work to do in his own right in the defensive zone, Gagner has been relatively unlucky, compared to previous years, in terms of on-ice save percentage (.891). If a team thinks that they can get quality production out of Gagner for the years ahead, his production this year ought to at least lower the asking price. Matt Moulson, LW, Buffalo - In what was completely expected when his first trade occurred early in the season, Moulson is heading towards his second deal of the year. Its tough sledding in Buffalo so Moulston has been getting beaten up in raw possession stats, yet still positive in relative terms, though being better than the average Sabres skater this season is a decidedly low bar. On a better team, with better linemates and more offensive zone starts, there is still a decent opportunity for Moulson to be a finisher on a contenders scoring line. Mike Cammalleri, LW, Calgary - Injuries have been a standard part of Cammalleris resume, so thats part of the package, but when he has played this year, he has played tough minutes and been relatively effective. Hes undermined by a horrible on-ice save percentage (.867), but the underlying possession stats are pretty favourable for Cammalleri. In a better environment, with better linemates, he should be a productive addition. Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo - While goaltending has its share of mysteries, given our current measurement, its pretty easy to see that Miller has been enjoying a strong season, with a .923 save percentage that is the second-best of his career but, looking over a longer time period, there are some trends to note. Over the past five seasons, his 5-on-5 save percentage is .927, which is good, ranking 11th among goaltenders with at least 2000 5-on-5 minutes played in that span. Where Miller has distinguished himself, somewhat, is in terms of shorthanded play, posting an .897 save percentage in 4-on-5 situations, which is second-best among goalies with at least 500 4-on-5 minutes played. No matter where Miller goes, it will be a better situation in terms of his opportunity to win and, really, his opportunity to be rewarded for strong individual play. David Legwand, C, Nashville - It comes as no secret, after nearly 1000 games, that Legwand plays against tough opponents and, generally, holds his own in the possession game. Like others in Nashville, hes been a victim of a relatively low on-ice save percentage, but that doesnt diminish the fact that Legwand can easily slide into a second or third-line centre role for many teams. Jaromir Jagr, RW, New Jersey - Sure, the ice is tilted in an offensive direction for Jagr, who naturally starts more of his shifts in the offensive zone, but he remains a dominant puck possession player, as he has been forever. He says he wants to stay in New Jersey, but Jagr has been an NHL nomad, playing in Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston and New Jersey since returning from his stint in the KHL. Marek Zidlicky, D, New Jersey - While his name isnt being liberally thrown out like some others, Zidlicky is an aging pending unrestricted free agent who can man the point on the power play. Trouble is, he hasnt been very effective as a possession player even while starting 58.2% of his shifts in the offensive zone. Hes pretty much a specialist, who has 12 of his 29 points on the power play. Tom Gilbert, D, Florida - After he was bought out of his contract by the Minnesota Wild, Gilbert was an inexpensive pick-up for the Panthers, signing a one-year, $900,000 deal. Turns out to have been a bargain as Gilbert is having a very strong season playing alongside Brian Campbell. Naturally, some of his success is due to playing with Campbell, but Gilbert has handled tough minutes and, thoughout his career, has consistently been a solid performer though, admittedly, on mostly bad teams. On a thin defence market, he could help, though the Panthers might want to see about keeping him around a bit longer. Ales Hemsky, RW, Edmonton - Hemskys offensive production is a far cry from his point-per-game days, yet hes delivering solid possession numbers while facing high-quality opposition and starting 43.2% of his shifts in the offensive zone. On a good team, in an offensive role, its easy enough to see that performance translating into Hemsky making a more significant scoring contribution. Nick Schultz, D, Edmonton - The totality of Nick Schultzs NHL existence has involved him playing tough defensive matchups, with lots of defensive zone starts. At his best, he played that shutdown role. Where Schultz is now, however, is getting crushed in terms of puck possession and while he still starts more in the D-zone (he plays for the Oilers, remember), its not nearly enough to justify the shooting tilt when hes on the ice. Some team will hope that Schultz will fit in a defensive role with more structure than surrounds him in Edmonton, but there is definitely risk involved in that projection when the trend has been going downhill for some time. Brad Boyes, RW, Florida - Another of the Panthers bargain free agents from the offseason, Boyes has still managed to put up decent possession numbers. Not outstanding, but good enough to think that he could offer a bit of an offensive boost for a team seeking a top-nine forward. Ray Whitney, LW, Dallas - Though hes 41-years-old, Whitney is coming off a 2013 season in which he tallied 29 points in 32 games, so he was expected to fill an offensive role for the Stars this year. It hasnt really happened for him as hes played a reduced role and is among the glut of indistinguishable supporting forwards in Dallas. Whitneys puck possession numbers have dipped dramatically from the past couple seasons, but hes also been a little unlucky at the offensive end (with a 7.34% on-ice shooting percentage). A team that chooses to acquire Whitney, would do so on the basis that he could add some juice to the power play, a pretty standard expectation for a player who has 409 career points with the man advantage. Tuomo Ruutu, LW, Carolina - After an injury-marred 2013 season, Ruutu has stayed relatively healthy this year, but has some bad numbers to show for it. He has mediocre possession stats, despite starting 63.6% of his shifts in the offensive zone (the first question: why?!?!), but Ruutu has also been seriously unlucky in terms of percentages at both ends of the rink. Its one thing to pick up Ruutu, expecting the percentages to fall in line with career norms, but his performance to this point likely makes for a very low asking price in trade talks. Chris Stewart, RW, St. Louis - The Blues leading scorer last season, Stewart is averaging under 15 minutes per game for the first time since his rookie season and that decreased ice time is justified. Hes getting destroyed in terms of puck possession while not facing tough competition and starting 60.1% of his shifts in offensive zone, failing despite many situational advantages in his favour. Stewart is a big-bodied forward who can score, which might attract some interest, but his underlying numbers -- if anyones looking at them -- dont help the sales pitch. Lee Stempniak, RW, Calgary - A generally unheralded veteran winger, Stempniak has to take on tough minutes for the Flames, facing quality competition and starting more shifts in the defensive zone. Even so, Stempniaks relative possession numbers are strong, which is a reflection of his teams struggles, but hes also been relatively unlucky offensively, with a 6.33 on-ice shooting percentage, the lowest rate of his career. These are the kind of numbers that might suggest Stempniak is due for some bounces if he fits into a top-nine role with a contending team. Ryan Kesler, C, Vancouver - A late addition to the list of players under consideration for trade, Kesler (who may have a broken hand/finger at the moment) has been healthy this year. He still faces the toughest opposition and still wins possession battles, but not nearly like he did during his peak years from 2009 through 2012. In any case, teams that are looking for a two-way centre that can handle tough matchups defensively and score will naturally be drawn to Kesler and will likely have to pay a hefty price to pry him out of Vancouver. Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay - There was apparently some behind-the-scenes drama when St. Louis was left off the initial roster for the Canadian Olympic team. If the Lightning are inclined to acquiesce to that wish, teams will be looking at a forward who has never been great in terms of possession. Hes been okay, factoring in more offensive zone starts, but St. Louis has consistently had a high on-ice shooting percentage and has maintained it this year, even with Steven Stamkos out since November 11. The gist of it is that St. Louis will still be productive offensively, so long as hes left in that role, though its fair to wonder whether his best interests will be served by playing with someone other than Stamkos (who is targeting a March 6 return to the lineup). After five trips to the championship series in eight years, it would make sense if he had a been-there, done-that attitude when stepping onto the sports biggest stage. He doesnt. On Wednesday James took a seat inside a makeshift interview area, sneaked a quick glance at the NBA Finals signage that was off to his left side, and beamed like a kid in a candy store. Just a couple years removed from being ripped for not delivering in the moments that decide championships, James seems more comfortable in these surroundings than ever. "Im blessed, man," James said. "Thats all I can say." And then, without stopping, the four-time MVP said much more. "This is my fifth appearance in a finals," he continued. "Im blessed. I was a kid who watched so many finals appearances and, you know, watched Michael Jordan and watched Shaq and Kobe ... we watched throwback finals games. ... I just wished maybe I could see the finals verbiage behind me and be a part of this." His wishes come true again Thursday night, when James and the Miami Heat open these finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the NBAs first championship-series rematch since 1998. The Heat are going for a third straight title, the Spurs are trying for their fifth crown since 1999. If Miami wins, the perception will be James came through. If Miami loses, the perception will be he didnt do enough. James knows thats the reality. He doesnt mind. "I play for my teammates, our team, the city of Miami, my friends and family, and I gave it all for that," James said. "And at the end of the day, win, lose or draw, Im satisfied with that. I dont get involved in what people say about me and my legacy. I think its actually kind of stupid." By now, the story behind James rise to a champion is no secret. He left Cleveland in 2010 because he felt Miami gave him a better opportunity to win titles. In 2011, when Miami lost to Dallas in the final round, James said he was relying too much upon proving his doubters and naysayers wrong. So the next season, he vowed to play the game the way he hadd in the past.dddddddddddd Championship No. 1 came in 2012, championship No. 2 came last season in an epic seven-game series against the Spurs, and now the shot at No. 3 is here. "Hes really taken his game to a whole other level," Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. "Obviously as an individual hes grown, as a man, both on and off the court from his own experiences. So I think hes done a phenomenal job. ... If I sit back and look from afar, hes done an unbelievable job under the microscope that hes been under since he was 16 years old of doing things his way and been very successful at doing them." If James is feeling pressure right now, it doesnt show publicly. Away from the public eye, though, teammates have marveled all season about how someone who makes more than $50 million a year in salary and endorsements is working perhaps harder than ever. "Nothing he does is normal," Heat forward Michael Beasley said. "He practices wearing a weight vest. Does that sound normal?" James spent the majority of his question-answering time Wednesday laughing or smiling. Off-stage, he joked with a few other people, chatting and seeming as relaxed as he would if this was the eve of a Heat-Spurs game in January, not one in June. The Spurs are worried about stopping James, they know that wont happen. "We understand LeBron is the best player in the league and just physically hes just a monster," San Antonio forward Tim Duncan said. In 2007, when the Spurs swept Cleveland, James was still learning. In 2011, he felt like he absolutely had to win, and failed to get it done. In 2012 and 2013, he just played the game the way he felt it needs to be played. And its no coincidence that its all fallen into place since. "Every time I come up here and talk to you guys or I do something, you know, very well on the basketball floor or off the floor, my city is rewarded by that," James said. "My family is rewarded by that, my friends are rewarded by that, the kids and all the kids in the world that look up to me are rewarded by that. Thats enough to get me by. Everything else is extra credit." Black China NFL Jerseys Wholesale NFL Hoodies Cheap Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Online Stitched Jerseys NFL Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys 2020 ' ' '
MILWAUKEE - Fatherhood has given Ryan Braun a different perspective on baseball and life in general. The Milwaukee Brewers outfielder has more pressing matters to worry about right now than whether an off-season medical procedure will finally fix the nerve damage near his right thumb that affected his swing. So far, so good — both with the thumb and raising a 4 1/2-month-old daughter. Its a lot of work, Braun said Sunday. Weve been sleep training her this week, which is one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life, but productive for all of us moving forward. So overall its been great.Almost everything sounded rosy on Sunday at the Brewers On Deck winter fan outreach event, where Braun, catcher Jonathan Lucroy and other teammates signed autographs and met fans.In a month, baseball will become more of a priority when spring training begins in Arizona for the Brewers. The slugger hopes to get a better feel by then about what kind of impact that the procedure known as cryotherapy had on his lingering nerve problem. The procedure involved the application of extreme cold. Assistant general manager Gord Ash said Braun and the teams medical staff are very optimistic, but cautioned that until he gets to spring training and gets some continuous at-bats and continuous repetitions, were not going to know for sure. The sore thumb left Braun struggling through a subpar season when he hit .266 — well below his career average of .306. His 19 homers and 81 RBIs were also career lows for a full season. It was Brauns first full year following a 65-game suspension at the end of the 2013 season for his connection to the Biogenesis doping scandal. There was work needed in 2014 off the field to rebuild trust with fans. He also switched positions.Ryan did everything we asked him to do last year, owner Mark Attanasio said. With that all behind him — I think the thumb was the primary thing we were focused on — but being another year removed from the drama, I think, is certainly going to help, and its another year now that hes comfortable in right field. It is his comfort level at the plate that could make the biggest difference in Milwaukee.A predominantly free-swinging club struggled at the plate the last five weeks of the season. A 20-7 start that allowed Milwaukee to stay atop the NL Central for five months was wasted by a 9-22 collapse to finish the season. The Brewers missed the playoffs for a third straight year.Milwaukee tweaked in the off-season instead of making wholesale changes. The hope is that a healthy Braun will make just a positive impact on the lineup as a big free agent addition. Its certainly big. I know hes said that if he was healthy, things might have been different last year and maybe they would have, manager Ron Roenicke said.At the same time, Roenicke said the other hitters need to be more consistent, too.It shouldnt all be on him, the skipper said. Is he a big part? Absolutely. We need him to bounce back and be the kind of hitter we know he is, and be the kind of defender we know he is.Braun said the thumb feels good so far. He started hitting a little earlier than he usually does in the off-season, but otherwise Braun is maintaining his typical routine. The thumb feels much better than it did at this point last year, Braun said. The first real test will come in spring training.I feel as good as I ever do this time of year ... I think its always kind of a progression of getting to the point where you feel really comfortable with your swing, Braun said. That normally happens at some point during spring training. But overall right now it feels good as I could possibly hope for.NOTES: General manager Doug Melvin said he hasnt spoken recently with the Philadelphia Phillies about trading for closer Jonathan Papelbon. That changes day by day. Sometimes you think theres nothing happening and sometimes you get a phone call. But I havent gotten any phone calls lately, Melvin said. ... The Brewers appear to still be in touch with free agent closer Francisco Rodriguez, who had 44 saves last season. In 2014, Rodriguez signed a one-year deal with Milwaukee about a week before spring training started. Jonathan Broxton would be the favourite to close if the Brewers didnt make another bullpen move.___Follow Genaro Armas at http://twitter.com/GArmasAP Custom Chicago Bears Jerseys .com) - The Calgary Flames are spoilers once again. We are still first, theres no problem for now. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Once Ubaldo Jimenez got through the fifth without allowing a hit, he began thinking back to his no-hitter at Atlanta in April 2010. He couldnt help it. Jimenez walked six batters that day. He carried a no-hit bid into the sixth Saturday night, backed by home runs from Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn as the Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics 7-1. Jimenez (9-7) didnt allow a hit until Josh Donaldson lined a run-scoring single to shallow centre with two out in the sixth, ending the pitchers night after 105 pitches. He struck out eight and walked five. "Since I got in the fifth inning, it brought a lot of good memories of my no-hitter in Atlanta," Jimenez said. "Especially when I walked six guys in that no-hitter." Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two runs and Michael Brantley hit a pair of doubles for Cleveland. A day after the Indians matched a season high with 13 stranded base runners, they took advantage of timely opportunities. Swisher drove the first pitch from Dan Straily over the right-field fence for his 13th home run, staking Jimenez to an early lead in the first. Cabrera later added a run-scoring single before hitting an RBI double in the sixth. Pitching on six days rest, Jimenez bounced back after taking a 7-2 loss to the Angels on Aug. 10 for his second straight defeat. He hoped he could have talked manager Terry Francona into staying in the game if hed kept the no-hitter going into the seventh. "We established the fastball in the first inning," he said. "Its not like I was wild. I was pretty much close in the strike zone. ... I wanted to get out of the sixth inning without (more) damage." The As drew two walks from the right-hander in each of the third and fourth innings but failed to capitalize. Jimenez plunked Josh Reddick in the right shoulder with one out in the sixth and Rich Hill began warming up in the bullpen. Jimenez walked Yoenis Cespedes on his 101st pitch and received a mound visit from pitching coach Mickey Callaway. Brandon Moss then struck out swinging before Donaldson singled. The As didnt do much more. "Jimenez was at times effectively wild today," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He does have good stuff, he does have a lot of different pitches that you have to worry about. He walked some guys but we couldnt square him up." Coco Crisp flied out as a pinch-hitter with runners on the corners to end the eighth. Bourns seventh-inning drive ended an 0-for-11 stretch for just his second hit in 21 at-bats during the teams road trip. Swisher added an RBI single and Jason Kipnis a two-run single in the ninth as the Indians won for the fifth time in the first six meetings with the As after sweeping a four-game set at home in May. "To put up seven runs on a team like that, thats doing something," Swisher said. "We got a lot of contributions from a lot of guys ... adding on runs every inning and not just getting up early and coasting." Straily (6-7) extended his losing streak to five games. He is winless in six outings since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on July 20, though he had received no run support in three of those outings since the All-Star break. He allowed three runs and six hits, struck out seven and matched his season high with four walks over 5 2-3 innings. Straily allowed Swishers one-out homer then struck out Kipnis before allowing back-to-back walks to Carlos Santana and Brantley. Pitching coach Curt Young made a mound visit when he went 2-0 to Cabrera, who then hit an RBI single to snap an 0-for-20 streak. After Drew Stubbs doubled to start the Cleveland fifth, Gold Glove right fielder Reddick started a sensational double play when he caught Bourns liner and made the perfect throw to third to get Stubbs. The sold-out Coliseum crowd of 35,067 booed former As fan favourites Swisher and Jason Giambi whenever they came to the plate. "Thats crazy, man," Swisher said. "Me and G. both. I dont get it, it is what it is." Cespedes went 1 for 3 with a walk on a day fans arrived more than four hours early to get his bobblehead. Notes: The Indians scored in the opening inning for the first time since Aug. 3 at Miami and put up multiple runs in the first for the first time since July 24 at Seattle. ... The sports ministry announced Mayweather will arrive on Wednesday for a near-weeklong visit -- his first to Africa and a triumph for the country which finally got its man after trying to lure the 36-year-old superstar as guest of honour at the national sports awards last year. The Ministry of Sport and Recreation also said on Tuesday that the boxer nicknamed "Money" had not been paid any fee to come. It hopes he can do more than just throw a few jabs and sign a few autographs for boxing in South Africa, which was still popular but in steady decline. Mayweathers four-city visit would help "resuscitate" the sport, ministry spokesman Paena Galane told The Associated Press. "Remember, hes the greatest athlete in the world," Galane said. Mayweathers schedule will include an exhibition at a gym in the Johannesburg township of Soweto and possibly a visit to late South African President Nelson Mandelas apartheid-era jail on Robben Island when hes in Cape Town. Mayweather will also visit Bloemfontein and East London on the south east coast, the ciity regarded as the hotbed of South African boxing.dddddddddddd "We wanted someone whos knowledgeable as a fighter and as a promoter," Galane said of South Africas pursuit of Mayweather to be the catalyst for its boxing revival. Mayweather does both better than most. In his last fight in September, Mayweather dominated Canelo Alvarez to improve to 45-0 with 26 knockouts and enhance his reputation as the best boxer of his era. He earned $41.5 million for the fight, which was the richest ever and generated around $150 million in TV revenue alone. The five-division world champion hasnt announced an opponent for his next fight, expected to be in May, although Britains Amir Khan has said he has signed an initial contract that may give him a shot at the undefeated American. Galane dismissed suggestions that reporters wouldnt be allowed to ask Mayweather questions on his future fight plans when he appears alongside South Africas sports minister and the head of its Olympic committee at a promotional event in Johannesburg on Wednesday. While the flamboyant Mayweather is expected to be accompanied by his usual large travelling entourage, the sports ministry said he would arrive on a commercial flight from the United States and not on a private jet. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For Rory McIlroy, the shockingly bad shot came out of nowhere. No worries. By the time he walked off the 18th green, there was little doubt he was still the man to beat at the PGA Championship. McIlroy ripped off four straight birdies on the back side and closed with another at the 18th hole, shooting a 5-under 66 at Valhalla that left him one shot off the lead Thursday. Fridays second round coverage begins with live streaming on TSN.ca at 8:30am et/5:30am pt while TSNs coverage begins at 1pm et/10am pt. Coming off wins at the British Open and Firestone, McIlroy came into the final major of the year as an overwhelming favourite. Even with a major blunder at the 10th, where he knocked his second shot over a fence and took double bogey, he was right on the heels of Lee Westwood, Ryan Palmer and Kevin Chappell. "Im really happy with everything," McIlroy said. "Ive got a good thing going right now. Im trying to ride that momentum as much as I can." Then theres Tiger Woods, who cant seem to get anything going. Playing just four days after his back flared up at Firestone, forcing him to withdraw, Woods proclaimed himself fit but sprayed shots all over the course on the way to a 74 that left him tied for 111th late in the day. "That wasnt very good," said Woods, who made only one birdie -- and had to hole out from the fairway to do that. "A lot of bad shots." One landed in a creek. Another sent the gallery scrambling. Yet another rolled into a fenced-off area where fans can use cellphones, a good 30 yards right of the fairway. Too bad Woods couldnt call for help. "I didnt play as well as I wanted to. I didnt get a putt to the hole," he said. "Thats not a good combo." McIlroy was cruising along when he got to the 10th, having made three birdies on the front side. After putting his tee shot right in the middle of the fairway at the par-5 hole, he yanked the next one out of bounds. A man talking on his cellphone along the fence, not concerned at all with getting in the way, was stunned with he looked up to see a ball sailing over his head. Especially when he learned whose ball it was. "I was really annoyed," McIlroy said. "That second shot at 10 is the worst shot Ive hit in weeks. It came out of the blue." He took a penalty and a drop and missed the fairway with his next attempt as well, resulting in a 7. Still shaken by that miscue, McIlroy made bogey at No. 11 to slip to even on the day. Just like that, he pulled himself together. Four straight birdies pushed McIlroy right back up the leaderboard, and it could have easily been five in a row. A 12-footer slid over the edge of the cup at the 16th. At the final hole, McIlroy reached the green in two for an eagle try to share the lead. If curled off at the end, leaving him with a tap-in -- his eighth birdie of the round. "It could have been better," he said. "But a 66 the first day, thats a solid start." Westwood matched his best round ever at a major, making nine birdies as he carried over the momentum from a closing 63 at Firestone. The 41-year-old Englishman also had a double bogey on his 10th hole of day -- at No. 1, after starting on the back -- but closed with four straight birdies. "The golf course was all there in front of me. I just play it as I see it," said Westwood, who has had numerous close calls but never won a major championship. "Last week, I felt like I turned a corner." Chappell, a 28-year-old Californian in his fourth year on the PGA Tour, turned in a bogey-free round. The final major of the year has produced some unlikely champions -- remember Shaun Micheel? -- and Chappell hopes to be the latest. "I cant complain about being in the lead of any golf tournament," said Chappell, whose only professional win came on the Web.com Tour in 2010. "I just look forward to keeping it rolling." Palmer birdied five of the nine holes on the back side, which is where he started his round. He said the greens were more inviting than he expected. "I was surprised how soft they were," he said. "It was a pretty easy, relaxing nine for me." McIlroy was joined at 65 by Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson, Edoardo Molinari and Chris Wood. For Furyk, it was another strong start in a tournament he nearly won a year ago. He took a lead to the final day at Oak Hill, only to lose to Jason Dufner by two strokes. Dufners title defence lasted only 10 holes. Plagued by a sore neck, he withdrew after a triple-bogey left his score at 8 over, probably ending his Ryder Cup hopes as well. He came in ranked No. 8 in the standings and hoping to somehow play well enough to stay in one of the nine qualifying spots. "I tried to do what I could to be able to compete some and give it a go," Dufner said, "but it is just pointless." Niles Paul Jaguars Jersey . The Bombers (2-0) face the hard-charging Montreal Alouettes (1-1) defence when the teams meet Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium. Catch the game live on TSN starting at 7pm et/4pm pt. Winnipeg opened the season with home wins over Toronto and Ottawa, piling up a league-leading 81 points in two games. They face a team than has allowed fewer than 20 points per game, including last weeks 24-9 win at home over British Columbia. "Theyve had a good defence for a long time," Willy said Thursday. "Theyve got a lot of good veterans. "You can tell theyve played together a long time. This week we were preparing, looking at the different looks theyve given in the last few games and the past few years, so well be ready to go. Im looking forward to going against them." The Alouettes offence has yet to find its stride under new starting quarterback Troy Smith, although he was better against the Lions than in the season opener in Calgary, a 29-8 loss. Smith has yet to pass for more than 200 yards in a game or throw a touchdown pass, but his execution improved and the Alouettes hope the offence takes another step the third time out. Willy has had no such problems so far in his first CFL season as a starter. He played eight games over the past two seasons with Saskatchewan as Darian Durants backup. The 27-year-old was traded to Winnipeg on Feb. 6 for receiver Jade Etienne. In his two games, Willy has passed for 615 yards, second only to Torontos Ricky Ray, and four TDs. He completed two-third of his throws, 40 for 60. Smith has completed only half of his passes, 35 for 70, for 341 yards. The Bombers have also been successful on the ground, where newcomer Nate Grigsby has rushed for 184 yards and three TDs on 35 carries. "Hes made some huge plays for us," said Willy. "Hes been able to get the tough yards we need late in games near the goal-line." Montreals aggressive, ball-hungry defence will be a test, however. Last week, they sacked B.C.s Kevin Glenn five times and caused three turnovers. "Weve just got tto play assignment football," said defensive tackle Alan-Michael Cash.dddddddddddd "They do have a good running back, but we pride ourselves on stopping the run, so itll be a good match." The defence also produced an early TD for the Alouettes, when defensive lineman Scott Paxson picked off a pass and pitched it to linebacker Chip Cox for an easy jaunt into the end zone. Cox said the challenge will be to slow down a Winnipeg offence that has early-season momentum. "Big plays man, theyre getting a lot of big plays," he said. "If we can eliminate them, I think well be fine." Few expected such a strong start from the Bombers, who went 3-15 last season. Winnipeg has missed the playoffs in four of the last five years, with a 30-60 record over that span. So far, they look to be a better, more disciplined club under new head coach Mike OShea. "Two games, weve been successful twice," cautioned OShea. "The players are doing what the coaches ask of them and the effort is there and theyre doing whats needed to win, so far." Still, the wins have not only given them points, but a much-needed morale boost as well. "Its very important, as I stressed through training camp, that this team tasted winning early, especially the veteran players who had experienced more than their fair share of losing," said OShea. "Theyve got that taste in the mouth now and they like it, so I believe theyll continue to do the things they needed to do to win those two games." They also havent been tested on the road. Home teams went 7-1 in the first two weeks. "Being on the road, from my recollection, can be good," said OShea, a former standout linebacker for Toronto. "You get more time to sit with your teammates and watch film together and talk football because theres not the distractions (of home). Its a business trip." Winnipeg will move Johnny Sears to safety to replace the injured Maurice Leggett. There were fears that receiver Aaron Kelly would sit out, but OShea said hes ready to play. Montreal has safety Mike Edem back from injury, but cornerback Chris Smith is out with a concussion and will be replaced by Dominique Ellis. First reported by FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal, its unknown if the impetus for the deferral proposal came from players or management, but it never left the preliminary stages. Rosenthal says that a pair of agents had heard word of the plan, but that they were never approached by Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos. Santana turned down a one-year, $14 million offer from the Jays and signed with the Atlanta Braves on the same deal after the Braves lost Kris Medlen for the season with Tommy John surgery. Whether or not the actual deferral proposal would fly in practice is another discussion altogether, as there would likely have been significant hurdles from the MLBPA, who is normally loath to allow its players to concede any sort of contractual edge without commensurate compensation. "I never took it that seriously," an agent told Rosenthal. "No way it would have ever passed the (union) unless there was some gain for the players who did that." In an interview with Matt Galloway on CBCs Metro Morning, Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston confirmed that such discussions took place, but maintained that payroll was there if needed. "There was discussion about that and, to be very honest with you, I think, had it gone that way, it would have been fine, but we are at $140 million [in payroll] right now," said Beeston. "The one thing that we do have is a very generous owner from the point of view of what they have committed to try to build the team. I think that the Rogers people, more importantly [former Rogers Communications CEO] Nadir [Mohamed] last year and carried on this year with [current CEO] Guy Laurence and the Rogers family, have given us the dollars weve wanted, that we need to put a contending team on the field. Its up to us to bring them together." For his part, Anthopoulos believed the deal was done. He would not, however, get into the specifics of how the pact would have been structured. "The takeaway for me is we felt that we had an agreement in place," Anthopoulos told reporters prior to teh Jays Friday home opener. "He was prepared to come here. We had the dollars. How we chooose to structure those dollars, those are things that we keep in house.dddddddddddd "But I believe if Kris Medlen had not been hurt, Ervin Santana would be here today." Not that Anthopoulos was about to hold that against the 31-year-old. "He had a lot more interest going into the NL, which is his right," he said. When pressed on whether or not the teams spending was capped, Beeston insisted that it wasnt. "Were a business, so the answer to that is that we have a budget," said Beeston. "Its not a cap. If we can increase our revenue, we can increase our expenses, but we run it as a business." With the Jays only signing catcher Dioner Navarro during the offseason, Beeston said that free agency is not the only avenue to improve his team and that trades could be made over the course of the season. "You have to organize it in manner that you might have to make some trades," Beeston explained. "You may have to look at different ways of bringing your players along, but I dont think from the point of view of money, money is our problem. One of the issues that we have is that we had to build our farm system up and we have done that over the last three or four years, but its not like hockey or basketball, where you come right out of the colleges or out of the minor leagues and move right into the Majors. So some of the pitchers that we have down there like [Marcus] Stroman and [Aaron] Sanchez, theyre just ready to come, but those are the guys that you will want to have introduced into your organization because they have to play three or four years before they make the big dollars. So you need a mixture of the players who are at the minimum, as well as your stars. But you dont win without stars." While Beeston acknowledged that teams can win with smalled budgets, free-spending teams are the ones most likely to find success. "Lets be realistic about it," said Beeston. "You can do it, but youre gonna get lucky and have everybody pop at the same time. Ultimately, teams like the Dodgers and the Yankees and Boston, that are spending all kinds of money, are basically the teams that have star players at every position." The Jays open a three-game set with the New York Yankees on Friday night at the Rogers Centre. East Lansing, MI - Connor Cook threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a score, as ninth-ranked Michigan State had another easy tune-up for the Big Ten schedule with a 56-14 rout of Wyoming on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. Jeremy Langford ran for 137 yards with a score on 16 carries and Nick Hill chipped in 71 yards on the ground for the Spartans (3-1), who completed their non-conference slate and will open Big Ten play next Saturday at home against Nebraska. After a bye following their 46-27 loss at No. 2 Oregon three weeks ago, the Spartans have dominated the opposition the last two weeks. Last Saturday, Michigan State piled up 336 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in a 73-14 demolition of Eastern Michigan. Against the overmatched Cowboys, Michigan State bettered that mark with 338 yards on the ground with five scores. Shaun Wick ran for 85 yards on five carries, including a 57-yard score, for Wyoming (3-2), while Colby Kirkegaard threw for 188 yards with a touchdown and an interception in defeat. The Cowboys have won each of their three home games and have been blown out by ranked opposition in their road outings. Wyoming went to Oregon two weeks ago and left with a 48-14 defeat against the Ducks. Michigan State scored 49 points in the first half of last weeks contest and nearly matched that total on Saturday, racing out to a 42-14 lead. Langford ignited the first Michigan State series with a 36-yard run and a Cook 25-yard pass to Tony Lippett set up a first down at the Wyoming 3. Langford was unable to bang it into the end zone on three tries, but Cook kept the ball on a fourth-down option and scored from the 1 to give the Spartans the early lead. After a Wyoming three-and-out, Cook finished a 10-play, 69-yard drive with a 19-yard TD strike to Lippett, but Wyoming answered when Wick burst up the middle and raced to the end zone from 57 yards. Michigan State responded quickly with a three-play set for a score, as Keith Mumphrey took an end around 33 yards to the end zone. A Kirkegaard fumble on the final play of the first quarter led to a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cook to Josiah Price just over a minute into the second for a 28-7 margin. The Cowboys had a field goal blocked on their ensuing possession and a 26-yard return set up the Spartans at the Wyoming 35. Tyler OConnor took over at quarterback for Michigan State and finished a nine-play drive with a 6-yard TD pass to Mumphrey. Kirkegaard fumbled again on Wyomings next series and Delton Williams capped the 25-yard Michigan State drive with a 4-yard TD run for a 42-7 cushion, but Kirkegaard threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to J.D. Krill in the final minute of the half. The Cowboys had the ball to start the second half, but Dominic Rufran fumbled after a reception on the first play from scrimmage to give Michigan State possession at the Wyoming 31. The Spartans were unable to cash in, as Cook threw incomplete on fourth down from the 7-yard line. Michigan State added to its lead late in the third on Langfords 29-yard TD run. Langford accounted for all 68 yards, rushing four times for 63 and catching one pass for five. OConnor then returned under center for the Spartans and scored on a 12-yard run early in the fourth to account for the final margin. Game Notes Langford recorded the ninth 100-yard game of his career ... Cook threw for 126 yards on 8-of-12 passing ... The Spartans outgained the Cowboys, 533-286 ... Bryan Murray made an announcement after the GMs meetings - and as was reported by Pierre LeBrun a couple of weeks ago - that Jason Spezza wants a trade out of Ottawa. Whats the latest on that? Pierre LeBrun: Yes, he made it public. As you said, we talked about this for a couple of weeks but I think that Murray felt compelled to stop playing around with this. Its not a rumour. Jason Spezza wants out and Murray has taken calls from other teams. Nothing is imminent, and Murray believes that things will heat up around the draft. But in any package for Spezza, he wants a player that helps them now plus some futures - it will be a high asking price. The Stanley Cup Final is on but GMs are already focusing about next season. We expect Brad Richards to be bought out by the New York Rangers - what about Mike Richards by L.A.? Darren Dreger: Well the Los Angeles Kings dont plan on buying out Mike Richards because then they would have to replace him. But Mike Richards doesnt want to be a fourth-line centre next year for the Kings. The Kings are expected to push Richards in the off-season to improve his conditions and get a little bit stronger. But we also know that Richards is a strong and confident young man and he may not want to follow the path that the Kings want him to follow. So this could get very interesting. Is current Philadelphia Flyer Vincent Lecavalier soon to be an ex-Flyer? Dreger: Hes a fourth-line forward making $4.5 million and I cant believe that Ron Hextall is going to want to pay him that. So the word on the street is yes, Lecavalier most definitely is in play. But keep in mind that he has a no-move clause. I know that his agent Ken Hughes has already talked to Hextall about the possibility of moving his client. There are no specific teams yet, theres no list, but if they want to move him they are going to have to go to Vinny and identify a specific place. LeBrun: To the disappointment of many teams, one player who is not on the move is Shea Weber and IIm not sure why.dddddddddddd For whatever reason, his name pops up all the time as a trade target. David Poile, the GM of the Predators, after the meeting on Wednesday said, "I am never trading Shea Weber." Hes not going anywhere, theyre building their team around him...thats the end of it. Dan Boyles rights are owned right now by the New York Islanders. But could he end up a Toronto Maple Leaf? Dreger: The Toronto Maple Leafs are high on Dan Boyles list. Hes expected to alert Islanders GM Garth Snow at some point this week as to whether or not he intends to negotiate with the Islanders with the possibility of staying there after New York made the trade for his negotiating rights. I know that the Islanders have already made an offer but there is no negotiation. Boyle wants a two-year deal, and the money might be more than the Leafs are willing to pay but they definitely have interesy, the Chicago Blackhawks are going to open the vault again for Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Chicago GM Stan Bowman told us today that he wants them signed by July 1. He has to set up his entire off-season and his cap room by knowing how much these guys will make. Hes optimistic that these deals will get done shortly between now and July 1. Bob Nicholson has left Hockey Canada, but we will find out shortly what his new job is going to be. Dreger: Yes, very soon news will break that Bob Nicholson is jumping into the National Hockey League. He left Hockey Canada and will join the high ranks of an NHL team in a high executive capacity - above the level of president and below that of an NHL owner. But hes joining the NHL. The NHL GMs discussed the draft lottery and possibly changing the odds, but is there no consensus just yet? LeBrun: Well it was sort of a confusing day. We spoke to Tim Murray of the Buffalo Sabres who said he was relieved, because he has three first-round draft picks in 2015 and his understanding is there wont be changes to the lottery before then. But we heard from league sources that its still possible that Bill Daly and commissioner Gary Bettman will make a proposal to the Board of Governors in less than two weeks. So its up in the air at this point. China Jerseys Cheap Cheap Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Discount NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys 2020 Wholesale Jerseys 2020 Wholesale NFL White Jerseys ' ' '

DETROIT -- When Brad Ausmus was a player -- which wasnt that long ago -- the mental aspect of the game always came pretty easily. "I always enjoyed the cerebral part," Ausmus said. "It was much more difficult to hit -- that was the part of the game I didnt really enjoy." Perhaps it was inevitable that Ausmus would become a manager, and hell have that chance now. The Detroit Tigers hired the 44-year-old former catcher to replace Jim Leyland at the helm of the three-time defending AL Central champions. Ausmus has little managerial experience, and the Tigers will entrust him with a talented roster that is expected to keep right on winning. "Im well aware that you dont generally get dropped into a situation like I will be this coming season," Ausmus said. "I understand Im very fortunate. That being said, Im not taking anything for granted. No details will be glossed over. Im not assuming anything going into the job." Ausmus, who worked in the San Diego Padres front office as a special assistant to the general manager, emerged as Detroits pick less than two weeks after Leyland stepped down. He takes over a team that has reached the AL championship series three straight years and should be well positioned for another big season in 2014. The Tigers lost to Boston this year in the ALCS. "Were not going to re-invent the wheel here. This is a pretty darn good team," Ausmus said. "I think I would be foolish to come here and try to make sweeping changes." Ausmus managed Israels team for the World Baseball Classic, but hes inexperienced as a manager compared to some other potential candidates. Ausmus played in the majors from 1993-2010. The Tigers also interviewed Padres bench coach Rick Renteria and Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach -- as well as Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said hed planned to interview former Cincinnati Reds star Barry Larkin, but Larkin decided not to interview because he wasnt in a position to make the time commitment necessary for the job. If continuity was Detroits main concern, McClendon may have been the choice, but the Tigers acted a bit more boldly in hiring the Dartmouth-educated Ausmus, whose name also recently surfaced in connection with the Chicago Cubs job. "When we interviewed, we were -- not just me -- taken back at how impressive he was," Dombrowski said. "It really became quite clear for us, that he would do an outstanding job for us. It was probably not where I started, but its where we ended, and we feel very good about that." There will be one important holdover on Detroits coaching staff. Leylands bench coach, Gene Lamont, will remain in that role. Ausmus agreed to a three-year deal with a club option for 2017. Lamont agreed to a two-year deal. Ausmus is 24 years younger than the man hes replacing, and he inherits a roster with a high payroll and several big names, including Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera. Hell have a chance to win right away, and hell have to deal with high expectations. "Anybody you hire has some risk attached to it," Dombrowski said. "Even a veteran manager that you bring in with a new club, where they are in their life, theres risk attached to that." The contrasts with the 68-year-old Leyland are obvious, and Ausmus will have to prove he can guide this star-studded team through the inevitable rough patches -- but it wasnt long ago that Ausmus was on the other side of that player-manager relationship. He played in 1,971 games with four different teams. He played for the Tigers for part of the 1996 season, and again from 1999-2000. "Ive got to be me," Ausmus said. "Jim Leyland -- great, Hall of Fame manager. Im not going to be Jim Leyland. I would never make an attempt to be Jim Leyland. Im going to be who I am." Detroit is one of at least three teams with first-time major league managers who should have a chance to win right away in 2014. The Washington Nationals hired Matt Williams to replace Davey Johnson. The Cincinnati Reds, who fired Dusty Baker after a 90-win season, went with pitching coach Bryan Price as their new manager. Ausmus is the latest former player to take over a contending team with little managerial experience. Mike Matheny succeeded Tony La Russa in St. Louis after the Cardinals won the World Series in 2011, and Matheny reached the NL championship series in 2012 and won the National League pennant this year. Former New York Yankees star Don Mattingly is the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team the Cardinals beat in the NLCS this season. "I was just playing the game three years ago," Ausmus said. "I have a pretty good understanding of how the locker room dynamic is." Detroit Lions Jerseys . The Blue Jays lost to the New York Yankees 3-1 Tuesday night, their seventh defeat in 10 games. The Kings have won three straight in the series to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven set. Another victory on Wednesday would get Los Angeles back in the Cup Finals for the second time in three years after claiming the franchises first title in 2012 by beating the New Jersey Devils. A win also would avenge the Kings loss to Chicago in last seasons West finals, which the Blackhawks won in five games. Chicago entered this postseason with a chance to become the first NHL team to win back-to-back Cups since Detroit pulled off the repeat in 1997 and 98, but that dream is looking bleak at the moment. The Blackhawks, who also won a Cup in 2010, need to win three straight to take the West Finals and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third time in five years. The Blackhawks have come back from down 3-1 to win a series only once in their history, but it was last spring against Detroit, which won three of the first four games against Chicago in the Western Conference semifinals before losing the final three tilts. The Blackhawks also needed to win Game 7 in overtime to down the Red Wings. "That was a special feeling last year when we came back from 3-1 and were able to win it in seven games in overtime," said Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane. "Who knows? Thats probably what its going to take to try and get back there." If Chicago does stave off elimination on Wednesday, the clubs will meet Friday in Los Angeles for Game 6. Kane ended a three-game stretch without a point with an assist in Game 4 at Los Anngeles, but it wasnt nearly enough as the Kings claimed a 5-2 decision to keep Chicago from tying the series.dddddddddddd L.A. scored three times in the opening period and extended the cushion to 4-0 in the second stanza. Jake Muzzin, Marian Gaborik, and Dustin Brown scored in just under a seven-minute span in the opening frame and Drew Doughty added a goal in the second. Jonathan Quick stopped 22 shots for the Kings. "We are trying to win one game, whether we are up 3-1, down 3-1, 2-2, no matter what the series is, that doesnt change what we are trying to do the next game," said Quick. Anze Kopitar had two assists in the win, and leads all postseason skaters with 22 points on five goals and 17 assists. Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell scored for the Blackhawks, who saw Corey Crawford give up four goals on just 20 shots in the loss. Chicago has lost three straight since winning Game 1 on home ice by a 3-1 score. The Blackhawks held a 2-0 lead late in the second period of Game 2 before allowing L.A. to score six unanswered goals. "Its all about our game and our preparation, theres things we need to do better," said Chicago captain Jonathan Toews. "We make mistakes and things wind up getting compounded quickly. We just need to forget about this and find a way to play like we did in Game 1." The Blackhawks were 7-0 on home ice in this postseason before dropping Game 2 to the Kings. Chicago is 18-3 at the United Center since the start of the 2013 playoffs. L.A. is 6-4 as the road team in the 2014 playoffs. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State made a move to fill an important role behind point guard Stephen Curry on the first day teams were allowed to speak with free agents. The Warriors and guard Shaun Livingston agreed to a three-year contract worth about $16 million Tuesday night, a person familiar with the deal said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because teams cant sign free agents until the NBAs moratorium ends July 10. "We intend to enter into a player contract with Shaun Livingston once the moratorium period ends," Warriors general manager Bob Myers confirmed in a statement. Per league rules, Myers could not comment further. Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement. The Warriors are hoping Livingston can bring some relief off the bench behind Curry, which proved problematic at times last season after Jarrett Jack left for Cleveland in free agency. Golden State started the season with Toney Douglas before trading him to Miami and acquiring Jordan Crawford and Steve Blake in separate trades. Crawford and Blake are not expected back. The 28-year-old Livingston averaged 8.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists with Brooklyn last season. The veteran guard started 54 games -- several when point guard Deron Williams was injured -- to help the Nets rebound from a horrific start and reach the second round of the playoffs. "Thank you Brooklyn for embracing me....," Livingston wrote on Twitter. "Golden State, excited to be part of the movement!!!" The 6-foot-7 Livingston is a big, versatile point guard that would seem to fit well in new coach Steve Kerrs system, which is predicated on ball movement and slashing. Livingston is known for his good instincts and strong post game, and his defence has improved throughout his career, which was nearly cut short by a severe knee injury. Livingstons days on the court seemed over when he tore three ligaments and dislocated his left kneecap with the Los Angeles Clippers in a game against Charlotte on Feb. 26, 2007. Livingston, who skipped college and was the No. 4 pick in the 2004 draft, missed an entire season and played in just 12 games with Oklahoma City and Miami when he returned in 2008-09. Livingston has worked his way back ever since, and he became a solid rotation regular for the Nets last season. The Warriors will be the ninth team he has played for in his professional career. MAYNOOTH, Ireland -- Paul Casey made a 60-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole Sunday and won the Irish Open by three strokes. The 35-year-old Englishman trailed by four shots entering the final round. He closed with a 5-under 67 that featured a stretch of five birdies in six holes from No. 8 to No. 13. He finished at 14-under 274 in winning his 14th career title. "Ive never holed a putt like that to win a tournament," Casey said. "Ive always felt so at home here, so winning today is like a home victory." Englands Robert Rock (71) and third-round leader Dutchman Joost Luiten (74) shared second at 277. According to multiple reports, Jim Harbaugh has agreed to become the new head football coach at the University of Michigan, ending weeks of speculation over where he would coach next season. Though it hasnt confirmed the reports, Michigan said it will hold a news conference at noon ET on Tuesday to make a major announcement. Harbaugh arrived in Detroit on Monday. I think well have some comments tomorrow, he said after being approached by the universitys student newspaper, The Michigan Daily. Earlier reports said the 51-year-old would sign a six-year, $48 million deal. A former Wolverines quarterback, Harbaugh parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday after four seasons, a move the team called mutual and one that was long seen as imminent even after he led the team out of a down period to a Super Bowl appearance. At Michigan, Harbaugh would replace Brady Hoke,, who was fired on Dec.dddddddddddd2. after four seasons. Interim athletic director Jim Hackett said that was long enough for Hoke to produce the kind of results the school expected from the program, but didnt see. Hoke was 31-20 coaching the Wolverines, losing more games each year following an 11-2 debut in 2011. Harbaugh played for legendary Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler from 1983-86, then spent 14 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL, half of them with the Chicago Bears. He was hired by San Francisco in January 2011 after four successful seasons as the head coach at nearby Stanford and turned a losing 49ers team into a winner that made three consecutive NFC Championship Games. Harbaughs Niners lost the Super Bowl to his brother Johns Baltimore Ravens in February 2013. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have the latest on the future homes of Jarome Iginla, Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek as well as updates on the top potential NCAA free agent and the NHLs search for fresh officiating. Jarome Iginla has been one of the stories of this season individually. Hes been a great fit in Boston and his 28 goals leads the team. Does he end up there beyond this year and re-sign? Darren Dreger: Thats certainly the hope of the Boston Bruins and of Jarome Iginla as well. I know Peter Chiarelli, the Bruins general manager, reached out to Don Meehan from Newport Sports last week. Theres been no official back-and-forth in terms of dialogue or a negotiation and the reality is that the Bruins dont have the tag room or the cap space to close this deal in-season. But, most definitely, Chiarelli and the Bruins want to extend Iginlas stay. He loves Boston. They love him in Boston. I think a deal gets done. Pierre LeBrun: Another top-line right-winger whos slated to be a UFA come July 1 is Ales Hemsky, who came over at the trade deadline to help the Ottawa Senators. Now, he has helped them, even though the Senators have struggled. Ottawa has seen enough of Hemsky that in the very near future they are interested in reaching out to his representatives to see if hes interested in staying on and to talk about an extension. Obviously, the money has to be right for the budget-conscious Senators, but right now Bryan Murray would like to bring Hemsky back for next season. Does Ryan Miller stay in St. Louis? LeBrun: That is what Doug Armstrong and the St. Louis Blues would love to do. Theyve already reached out to Mike Liut, the agent for Ryan Miller, and told Miller: ‘Once this season is over, we want to bring you back. They are being aggressive in their overtures and telling this player that they do not want him to go to the July 1 market. They believe he is a long-term fit for their team which will contend for a number of years. Bob McKenzie: The conventional wisdom among the hockey community is that one of the reasons Miller wants to wait until free agency on July 1 is to see if theres any interest from the Anaheim Ducks. There was all sorts of speculation that the Ducks tried to make a trade with the Buffalo Sabres earlier this season for Miller, but that it fell through and they werent able to do it. Millers wife is an actress. She does all sorts of work in Hollywood and the possibility of being on a California team might be something that is really good for Ryan Miller. So, well wait and see where that goes. Its college free agent signing season. The most sought-after right now is Christian Folin, a 63”, 210-pound defenceman from Sweden who plays for the River Hawks and UMass. Who are the front-runners to get him? McKenzie: The Philadelphia Flyers, the Minnesota Wild, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Edmonton Oilers are amongst the teams believed to have the best chance to try to get Christian Folin out of UMass Lowell. Now, I should point something out. Firstly, theyre playing in the NCAA tournament Friday night against Minnesota State. If they lose, hes got a decision to make. He has not yet fully committed to making the decision that hes coming out of college. The likelihood is that he is, but he hasnt made that decision just yet. Lots of teams are getting the sense now that theyre out of it and that those teams I just mentioned are the front-runners. The NHL is apparently seeking officials... Dreger: Theyre calling it the NHL Exposure Combine and the belief is that theyre hoping to bring in upwards of 60 high-level prospects. Theyre going to collect these, literally, from around the world, but yes, they will send invites to certain universities and NCAA colleges for those graduating hockey players who perhaps want to pursue a career as an NHL on-ice official. Theyll hold the combine in August in Buffalo. There will be considerable physical testing but its all part of trying to expand the search and every other year, theyll do an amateur version. McKenzie: I smell a reality show coming: “So You Wanna Be a Ref?” Pierre LeBrun has a quick one-timer for us on Thomas Vanek. LeBrun: Vanek is obviously loving his time in Montreal so far but I spoke with his agent Steve Bartlett earlier on Tuesday who said the plan has not deviated. They told the Sabres last summer that theyre going to July 1. They told the Islanders after he got traded that its going to July 1 and that remains the plan right now. Lets see if a little playoff magic might change his mind. Darryl Dawkins Jersey . The Blue Jackets play Thursday night at New Jersey in their first game after the NHLs Olympic hiatus. The National Labor Relations Board said Thursday it will hear an appeal by Northwestern challenging the decision from a regional NLRB director who ruled the players are university employees and thus have the right to unionize. The board said the ballots will be impounded at least until it issues its decision later this year. If the case lands in court, it could be a far longer before the results of the vote are known. The vote comes one day after leaders at the NCAA endorsed a dramatic proposal to give its biggest and most powerful member schools the autonomy to make decisions for its athletes, including more robust funding of scholarships, the ability to address health concerns and other key areas. Union supporters say they are seeking guaranteed coverage of sports-related medical expenses for current and former players. There have been no raucous rallies or demonstrations on the 19,000-student campus just north of Chicago, just official notices about the vote posted near the Wildcats locker room. But there has been plenty of lobbying in the form private meetings, calls and emails, and everyone from coach Pat Fitzgerald to NCAA President Mark Emmert has called for a "no" vote. The 76 scholarship football players eligible to cast ballots know the spotlight is on them, said Ramogi Huma, president of the College Athletes Players Association, which would represent the players at the bargaining table if the pro-union side prevails. Some of the pressure they feel stems from dire Northwestern claims about the consequences of unionization, he said. "Theyre looking at anything and everything to invoke fear in the players," said Huma, a former UCLA linebacker and longtime critic of the NCAA. "We feel like some of the tactics are scare tactics." Northwestern, which is required by law to let the vote proceed, denies applying undue pressure on players to vote "no." However, it recently sent a 21-page question-and-answer document to the players outlining the problems with forming a union. In it, Northwestern said it hoped unionization would not lead to player strikes in the event of a dispute -- but if it did, replacement players could be brought in to cross picket lines. "The tension created in such a situation would be unprecedented and not in anyones best interest," it said. The school also said divisions could emerge between scholarship players eligible for union membership and walk-ons, coaches and staff. "There is no question but that the presence of a union would add tension in terms of creating an us versus them feeling between the players it would represent and those it would not," it said. Northwestern did not release the document publicly, but The Associated Press obtained a copy and a spokesman for the universitys athletic department, Paul Kennedy, verified its authenticity.dddddddddddd Alan K. Cubbage, the schools vice-president for university relations, dismissed Humas suggestion that the school was using scare tactics "I would say strongly that Northwestern has conducted an election campaign ... according to the procedures and the rules of the NLRB," he said. When outgoing Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter announced in January that he would lead the drive to unionize, helped by CAPA and the United Steelworkers, he said nearly all of his fellow teammates were behind him. Safety Davion Fleming said his teammates slowly began to understand the issues arent clear-cut. "When the union talk initially started, it wasnt very clear what was going on," said Fleming, who cant vote because his eligibility is exhausted. "I think they didnt understand the implications." Huma said Northwestern seemed e facts, and said the schools "subliminal messages" included the suggestion that a "yes" vote could throw their amateur status into question. "No one is taking about striking," he said. "They are trying to rattle players." The fight has been noticed by incoming recruits, too. "I went there for many reasons, more than just football," said Justin Jackson, a running back recruit from Carol Stream. "Theres no possible way that it would have deterred me from signing back in February." Like the players themselves, recruits and their families have a long list of potential questions should a football players union become a reality. One of the biggest issues is whether scholarships would be counted as taxable income. "I dont feel that were really in the position to get involved in anything like that with it yet," said Phil Jackson Sr., Justins father. "But it does obviously would have an impact on the students as far as the scholarship not being a grant but actually being considered income, yeah, that definitely would be a concern. "But at the same time we also understand theres some important issues that need to be hashed out and were kind of letting the process play itself out for right now." Trevor Siemian, who is expected to replace Colter as the starting quarterback, has said he will be voting against a union. "Ill say theres a significant number of guys on the team who feel the same as me," Siemian said earlier this month. Fleming also said doesnt support unionization, though he said the drive has prompted a much-needed debate about conditions for players. After weeks of both sides vying for votes, he said he detects a common sentiment among players. "They just want this to be over -- and to focus on football," he said. The then-Pat Quinn-led Maple Leafs were jostling for top spot in the Eastern Conference and wanted to add some Hall of Fame punch to their lineup. So on Mar. 3, 2004 - with John Ferguson Jr. installed as general manager - Toronto swung a deal with New York for Brian Leetch; a swap that would cost them two prospects, (and of much more significance to the future) a first round pick in 2004 and a second round pick in 05. Six days later they would fire another draft selection - a fourth round pick in 05 - to Carolina for Ron Francis. It was only one year earlier that they surrendered their first round pick in 03 and two young players - Alyn McCauley and Brad Boyes - to San Jose for Owen Nolan. Theyd sacrifice another second round pick (04) for Glen Wesley less than a week after that. Later was constantly being sacrificed for now in an era when draft futures held little of their current premium for a big spender like the Leafs. But it was that strategy of now for later - two firsts, two seconds in a string of three drafts - that helped damage the club in the years that followed the second lockout; useful (and inexpensive) prospects in a cap era were nowhere to be found. Sending out another first (07) in the Vesa Toskala trade and two more (10, 11) in the Phil Kessel swap, the Leafs had, over the course of nine drafts (03-11), traded five of their first round selections. The result was a prospect cupboard continually lacking in NHL-caliber talent and an organization short on internal depth. That prospect could be changing with a collection of youthful talent - the likes of Petter Granberg, Josh Leivo, Jerry DAmigo, Stuart Percy, and Andrew MacWilliam among others - edging closer to potential jobs with the Leafs and others - such as Matt Finn, Connor Brown, Tom Nilsson, and Carter Verhaeghe - in line to follow. With the eighth overall selection (at the time of this writing) in the 2014 draft, the club will add another asset to that mix. Fronting the charge for that selection is Dave Morrison, the teams director of amateur scouting, who spoke with TSN.ca about the Leafs draft history, Brendan Shanahan and his role in the draft process, high-risk, high-reward picks, a burgeoning group of blueline prospects and an unpredictable draft in Philly. SIEGEL: Youve talked to me in the past about looking for indicators as far as prospects go, indicators that will tell you that a prospect can play in the NHL - whether thats speed, size, or a shot. In terms of that personality, how would you say its progressed from when Brian Burke was in charge to now that you have Brendan Shanahan at the helm? MORRISON: Well, those things never really change because I think some of those core indicators really do need to stay the same. They have to be able to get to a certain proficiency in skating, if theyre not already elite skaters. Some kids just are naturally very gifted on their feet; other kids have to really work at it. Does their brain function fast enough to be able to play at the next level? And if theyre not a good skater does it function fast enough to compensate for their lack of foot speed? Do they have enough courage? The game has changed a lot and courage, probably the definition of it and how it pertains to the player being able to play in the game has changed too a little bit. Its a little different than it was 10, 15 years ago. But a lot of those things havent changed in the sense that you have to be able to put a value on them and make sure that down the road theyre going to have those things that are going to enable them to play or give themselves a chance to play. SIEGEL: Is foot speed more important now than maybe 10 years ago? MORRISON: Absolutely. I think pre-original lockout there was a lot more hooking and holding. I think strength, size, the ability to battle through things was really, really important. Its still important. As you can see in the playoffs, teams that are big and strong and have those bodies can be really effective at this time of year. But it has changed in the sense that the smaller player is maybe getting a little bit more of an opportunity. I think speed, you can really see speed and what it can do in a game. So it has changed a little bit in that sense. I think all things being equal you would like a big player with great speed, with great hands and with great hockey sense (laughs). SIEGEL: Perfect player. MORRISON: Yeah, its always been that way, but unfortunately its never as clear-cut as that. SIEGEL: We got a pretty good understanding when Brian was here; he liked that North American player, black and blue style. His first draft in 2009 you picked seven North American players. So now that youve had one draft under Dave Nonis and obviously Dave Nonis and Brendan Shanahan are now at the top [together], what does a Brendan Shanahan player look like now? What kind of player has he passed along to you that he would like in the system? MORRISON: You know Brendan himself was a black and blue, skilled player. He was a very competitive, skilled player. I think he himself likes those kind of players as well. We as an organization, weve always sort of wanted those kind of guys. Yes, along the way weve maybe tried to get a different type of player at different times and sometimes thats difficult to do. But I think anybody in our organization would tell you that competitiveness is really important and obviously you need to have skill on your team. Those are important ingredients. But you also have to have a certain number of physical players that play hard and can play the game two ways; preferably everybody plays hard and two ways. You do have different types on your team. Competitiveness is really important to us. Certainly you want to be a big, strong, skilled team if you can be. SIEGEL: When you look at the current group that you have, youve got some prospects that look like they could be ready to take that next step...but when they project right now you can see them more as role players at the NHL level. Do you feel like youve got to keep injecting more skill into the prospect cupboard? MORRISON: I think you always want to inject everything into your prospect cupboard every year. If you look at the past it always sounds like our cupboard is bare of skilled players - what I read and what I hear - but if you look at a kid like Andreas Johnson, who was just the Swedish Elite League rookie of the year with 15 or 16 goals as a 19-year-old in that league, I see a skilled player. I see a Connor Brown, who won the scoring [title] in the CHL. Does he need some development time? Yes. But hes a very skilled player. Fabrice Herzog [scored] over 30 goals in his first year with Quebec last year. Do we have some skill in the pipeline? Yes. Do we have role players? Yes. Do you need to inject skill players? Yes. You always need to do that. Kids like Nazem Kadri and Morgan Rielly, I think those kinds of players you do have to draft and weve drafted them in the past and well draft them again. SIEGEL: Well and I think you could probably add Carter Verhaeghe to that list as well - you look at what he did last year in Niagara. But whether its Andreas Johnson, Fabrice Herzog, can you look at those guys and say theyll be high impact players at the NHL level? MORRISON: I think they have a chance to be [high] impact players, Jonas. I think any prospecct has a chance and an opportunity to do that.dddddddddddd The blue-chip type, those franchise-type guys, theres not many of those available every year. And I think you can throw a lot of other players in as they develop, the closer they get they get closer maybe to being a blue-chip [prospect]. But its always an opportunity and a chance for these kids to become those players and thats part of the development process that weve been putting a lot more work and effort into the last few years. Were hopeful that were going to see the fruits of that labour at some point here. And I know theres an impatience in Toronto and I understand it totally and its incumbent upon us to change things and put a winning team on the ice - thats just the bottom line. SIEGEL: Whats the balance when youre putting together your list, and its obviously a really rigourous process, but whats the balance between ranking a player who is maybe a safer bet to make the NHL as opposed to a player whos higher risk, but potentially offers higher rewards? MORRISON: Thats a million dollar question. Sometimes if you think you can get a third line player, big centre like Fred Gauthier well use an example. Is he going to be an impact player in his own way? Well, we believe he is. Is it going to be as an offensive player? No. Is he going to be an integral part of a winning team at some point? We certainly hope so and we think so. So theres a lot of these different things that you think about. And it takes a lot of different pieces to make a winning team and some people get focused on the idea that you have to get 150 points in junior to be a good NHL player and that certainly is a good indicator, but its not everything. Weighing everything out, yes, youd love to get that high-impact offensive, first-line player with every pick. The reality is thats very tough to do. So when were doing that youre weighing well what are the odds of this guy getting there versus this guy? And what will he bring to your lineup? And is it going to be valuable? And is it going to be tough to find when you need that? Thats another question. Teams will give up first round picks for players because they dont have [that specific skill] at some point. SIEGEL: But couldnt you make case that its more difficult to find skill than it is a role player? If youre going to get that player dont you have to draft him? MORRISON: Yeah, I dont disagree with you in that sense. Yes. Skill, a guy that will be a top-line player, is definitely harder to find and we are trying to do that at all times. Certainly at some points youre looking at that guy and youre saying Well, how far away is he? Does he have a chance? And then youre ranking him versus another guy, whos maybe not a first-line player, but a second-line player, but you say Hey this guy has those intangibles, maybe we do that? We havent done that with every pick weve made. Again Jonas, were always trying to get that top guy with every pick and we feel like we can get a guy that can impact our lineup were going to take him. SIEGEL: Yeah, I guess its just easy to look at some of the teams that have advanced deep into the playoffs, Chicago, L.A., and theyve managed to find some steals later in the draft. I understand its a crap-shoot and picking Andrew Shaw in the fifth round, theres got to be some degree of luck to that, but when you look at the [Leafs] organizations drafting history, is there something youve identified and said You know what, we can do that better? MORRISON: Well, youre always trying to get better. In our group, our amateur scouting group here, we talk about it constantly throughout the whole year every year. What can we do better? With this particular pick what did we do wrong? What can we improve upon? What did we miss? Whats something we can make ourselves better at? We do that constantly. And I think most scouts would tell you theyre extremely proud of the players that theyve picked that have made it, but they also talk about the failures. We often compare it to a batter going up to the plate; youre going to fail more than youre going to succeed. And thats an unfortunate reality that we really dont want to come to grips with and we dont. We go into that draft thinking with seven picks were going to get seven players and we want to get seven players out of every draft. So were always, always trying to get better at. I believe in this scouting [staff]. I think if you look at a lot of scouting staffs, over time with experience, they all tend to get better. SIEGEL: When you look at the group that youve put into place, are you most excited about some of the prospects that youve been able to assemble on the back-end? You look at Petter Granberg, you look at Tom Nilsson, Matt Finn, the year that he had. Is that the area where you probably have the most strength right now? MORRISON: Thats the group right now thats further along in the cycle. Am I proud of that group at this particular point? Yes, I am. But they havent got there yet Jonas and until they get there Im not satisfied and neither are they. I see a group of forwards too that I think have a lot of potential and are trying to get to that ultimate goal as well. I just think that all the picks weve made weve put a lot of our heart and soul into and these kids we know are doing the best they can to get there. We just need them to take those extra steps and a lot of them seem to be doing it. And right now it appears some of these defencemen we have are getting very close so thats a good thing. SIEGEL: When you look at this years draft, does the unpredictability at the top make it difficult to project what youre going to be able to land at the eighth pick? MORRISON: I would say so. You look at a lot of these independent lists and things online and different publications and theres a real difference in the lists. Maybe, other than a few guys at the very top, there seems to be a real difference in who likes who. I would think that its probably the same with 29 teams. Its difficult, but at the end of the day we know what we like and we know what wed like to get and thats I think the most important thing going into the draft. SIEGEL: When you look at some of those publications, aside from the 2-3 guys at the top, it seems to be winger-heavy at the point where youre picking. If thats the case and obviously this organizations strength, one of its strengths is on the wing, are you okay with picking another winger or do you look and say weve got to find a way to keep addressing the need at centre? You added Gauthier last year. How do you balance that juggling act? MORRISON: I think we take the best player. I think we dont think about the position so much as the player and the talent. And thats the way were going to look at it. We want to get the best player we possibly can, the player with the most NHL potential and potential impact at the NHL level when they get there. So thats what were going to do. We wont be position-specific; its more about the player. SIEGEL: I dont want to go through all the different guys, but is there a type that youre looking at within that group, because you seem to have some power wingers, youve got a couple two-way centres; what about the group coming into this draft strikes you? MORRISON: This group, theres all different flavours there. Theres really a different bunch of styles and types in that group. We like quite a few of them. Weve got a framework now for our list obviously. We know who we like and were confident were going to get a good player. Its exciting going in. ST. LOUIS -- All Adam Wainwrights balky elbow needed was a little rest. The St. Louis starter tossed eight strong innings, and Matt Holliday broke an eighth-inning tie with a run-scoring double to lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 win over Philadelphia that snapped the Phillies season-high five-game winning streak on Saturday. Wainwright (10-3) allowed one run and six hits, struck out seven and didnt walk a batter for the Cardinals, who broke a three-game losing streak. He pitched on 10 days rest after missing a start due to elbow tendinitis. "That was the right decision," Wainwright said of skipping an outing. "I felt real good all game. Sometimes you never know how youre going to respond when you havent thrown very much. But I was fine. "The only time I even felt anything in my arm at all was my first swing where Cole Hamels jammed me and I grounded to third." Wainwright needed to be on his game to beat Hamels in a matchup of heavyweight arms. "It was a pitchers duel as advertised," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Both guys were outstanding." Wainwright was slightly better. He never let a runner get beyond second base except in the third when the Phillies scored their only run. Wainwright, who lowered his ERA to 2.08, threw 104 pitches, 68 for strikes. "All of his pitches were sinking, and he mixed them up well," Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz said. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny was impressed with Wainwrights command following the layoff. "Its just amazing how sharp he was," he said. "It looked like the Adam weve watched all season." Trevor Rosenthal backed up Wainwright by striking out two in the ninth to earn his 21st save in 24 attempts. Hamels (2-4) gave up three runs and seven hits over 7 1-3 innings. He had a scoreless streak of 24 2-3 innings snapped on Matt Adams second-inning sacrifice fly. Hamels refused to speak with reporters after the game. Holliday ripped a one-out double to bring in Matt Carpenter and break the 1-1 tie. Carpenter coaxed a leadoff walk to begin the eighth. "At that point in the game, youre looking at having a chance to win if you can scratch across one run," Holliday said. "Luckily, (Hamels) left it up a little and I put a good swing on it." St. Louis added two more runs in the eighth to go up 4-1. Jhonny Peralta brought in Holliday with an infield ground out, and Adams followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game. "We grinded it out," Matheny said. "Were getting good at those close games by just staying the course." Philadelphia had tied it 1-1 in the third inning on successive singles by Cody Asche and Hamels, and a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Rollins. Asche, who grew up in nearby OFallon, Missouri, recorded his first hit at Busch Stadium. Rollins extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the eighth inning. The people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet complete. Schaub must still pass a physical in order to finalize the trade. ESPN first reported the trade and said the Raiders would give up a late-round pick in this years draft for Schaub. Schaub was Houstons starter from 2007 until last season, when he was benched in favour of Case Keenum after a terrible start to the year. The Texans were expected to contend for a Super Bowl last season, but instead became the NFLs worst team, sinking to 2-14, which tied the worst record in franchise history. It was clear after last season that Schaub didnt have a future in Houston, but his departure looked to be imminent on Thursday night when the Texans signed veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Houston also has the first overall pick in this years draft, which includes top quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel. The pending acquisition of Schaub is the latest attempt by general manager Reggie McKenzie to find a quarterback to lead the Raiders back into relevance after 11 straight years without a winning record or playoff berth. Since dumping Carson Palmer last spring, McKenzie traded a 2014 fifth-round pick for Matt Flynn before cutting him early last season; spent a fourth-rounder last year on Tyler Wilson before losing him off the practice squad to Tennessee; and signed Matt McGloin as an undrafted free agent. McGloin showed flashes in his six starts last season but is viewed more as a potential backup than a starter. The only other quarterbacks on Oaklands roster are Terrelle Pryor, whose running style does not fit what the coaching staff wants to do offensively, and veteran Trent Edwards, who was signed earlier this off-season. The move puts less pressure on Oakland to use a high drraft pick on a quarterback in May.dddddddddddd The Raiders pick fifth overall in the draft but could use that selection to fill another hole. With loads of salary cap room to start the league year, the Raiders have targeted veterans with only one of their acquisitions younger than 29. That appears to be part of an effort to turn the team around quickly. McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen oversaw back-to-back four-win seasons since arriving in Oakland and owner Mark Davis is running out of patience with this regime. They are hoping last year was an aberration for Schaub. While the Texans had plenty of problems, Schaubs poor play was perhaps the biggest. The Texans won their first two games before Schaub began to struggle and he threw six interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns in the next three games. He started the sixth game of the season and left with an injury before being replaced in the starting lineup by Keenum, an undrafted free agent who spent 2012 on the practice squad. Keenum was injured late in the season, forcing Houston to go back to Schaub for the last two games. He didnt fare any better than he had before he was benched and he threw four interceptions combined in the last two games as Houston wrapped up the season with a 14-game skid. The 32-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowler, who last made the game in 2012. He had been solid for the Texans since taking over the job after being traded from Atlanta in 2007, but his best seasons came in 2009 and 2012 when he started each game. In 2009, he led the NFL in yards passing (4,770), completions (396) and attempts (583) and was fifth in touchdown passes (29). In 2012, he threw for 4,008 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to help Houston to its second straight AFC South title. He spent three seasons with the Falcons as Michael Vicks backup before joining the Texans, and has thrown for more than 24,000 yards with 130 touchdowns in his 10-year career. SALT LAKE CITY - Scrapping together enough offensive energy was no simple task for the Utah Jazz in their first post-Christmas game.Everything changed in the fourth quarter, when Utah finally found a rhythm and pulled away for an 88-71 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.Once it came down to the fourth quarter, everybody just wanted to get the game over with, Jazz centre Derrick Favours said. We picked up the energy and picked (up) the intensity. Got enough stops on defence to help the offensive end. Everybody took their time. Everybody touched the ball and made shots.Favours had 17 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead Utah. With his team clinging to a three-point lead, Favours converted a three-point play and drove for a dunk on back-to-back possessions. It pushed the Jazz lead to 74-66 with 4:52 remaining. Those two baskets touched off an 18-3 run to seal the win.Trey Burke added 17 points, Gordon Hayward chipped in 15 and Enes Kanter finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz (10-20), who won for the fourth time in their last five games.Tony Wroten scored 20 points and Robert Covington added 17 for the Sixers (4-25), who could not overcome a sluggish offensive performance before halftime. The Jazz outscored Philadelphia 52-30 in the paint and finished with a 20-7 advantage in second-chance points. The Jazz limited the Sixers to just 12-of-40 shooting (30 per cent) from the field before halftime. Michael Carter-Williams particularly struggled, shooting just 1 of 13 in the first two quarters. He finished the game 2 of 20.Its tough, Carter-Williams said. I just need to bounce back from it. I cant dwell on it. Its going to definitely push me to get better — I wont forget moments like this.Favours helped Utah get off to a quick start. He blocked three shots in the first 5 minutes and added three baskets, culminating in a dunk that gave the Jazz a 12-5 lead. Utah pushed its advantage to 23-10 late in the first quarter when Hayward made a pair of baskets and a pair of free throws on three straight possessions. After taking a 44-32 halftime lead, the Jazz let it slip away during a sluggish third quarter start. Utah missed 11 straight shots to open the period. The Sixers wasted no time taking advantage of the prolonged drought - opening the half with a 15-2 spurt.Covington fueled the run with a pair of 3-pointers and then Wroten tied the game with a driving layup. The Sixers finally took a 47-46 lead on a free throw from Jerami Grant with 6:21 left in the quarter. We were down 14 and we found a way to compete and claw our way back on the road, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. We just couldnt sustain it, and its just a really true learning lesson that guys have to understand - especially on this side of the world in the Western Conference.Utah trailed only briefly. The Jazz scored six unanswered points to go back in front 53-47.Philadelphia cut it to 60-59 on a basket from JaKarr Sampson early in the fourth quarter. The Jazz kept the Sixers at arms length. Burke converted a 3-point play just a minute later to keep Utah from falling behind.I wouldnt call it sloppiness, Burke said. I just felt like we didnt hit shots. I didnt think we were sloppy. I just felt like we had a lot of good looks that we didnt make, but our defence made up for it.TIP-INSJazz: The Jazz outscored the Sixers 17-3 in second-chance points in the first half. ... "It was a weird play," Seager said of the triple in the fourth inning.TORONTO -- Understandably, Ryan Nelsen is torn about Jermain Defoe and the World Cup. Talk to the Toronto FC manager and he lists off the reasons why his star striker should go to Brazil. But he better than anyone knows that Englands gain would be his loss. "Look, for Toronto FC Id love him to stay obviously, because hes a quality player," said Nelsen, who captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup. "But for Jermain, if I was the England manager, I probably would pick him. Because you know what youre going to get with him -- you absolutely know what youre going to get with him." Defoe, who played at the 2010 World Cup, offers England experience and a scoring touch off the bench. He has potted goals everywhere he has played -- including 19 in 55 appearances for his country. The 31-year-old striker says he is in the dark, waiting for the phone to ring. "Its down to the manager," said Defoe, referring to England boss Roy Hodgson. "He picks the squad. "Im sure he knows what every player can do. And even before he was the England manager, he probably knew all the players anyway. So Im sure that the manager knows his squad. And he probably knew his squad a long time ago -- maybe just one or two additions that youre not sure about. "I dont know. Its up to the manager. As players, you just concentrate on playing for your club and then, like you said, you wait for the call." Hodgson has apparently made up his mind. He is set to announce his 23-man squad Monday as well as seven standby players. "Ive known for a while," he is quoted on Englands Football Association website. England will travel to Portugal on May 19 for a training camp that runs through May 23. The squad will reassemble May 27 with a friendlyy against Peru at Wembley on May.dddddddddddd 20. The 23-man World Cup squad will be confirmed June 2. England has friendlies June 3 against Ecuador and June 7 against Honduras, both in Miami, before heading to Brazil for its World Cup opener June 14 against Italy. Realistically Defoe is hoping to land a spot as a reserve striker with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck of Manchester United, Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool and perhaps Rickie Lambert of Southampton ahead in the pecking order. Given that, some argue that it would make more sense to take a younger player over Defoe. The argument there is that it would be an investment in the future. Nelsen sees the other side to that coin, suggesting his man has the seasoning and mental toughness to survive the England spotlight. "Probably the Brazil and the England national team are the hardest teams in world sport to play for, in terms of expectation and pressure," he said. "You know Jermain can handle that. On the worlds biggest stage, you want to kind off knock out the variables. And I think Jermain does that." "With my TFC hat on, I hope he doesnt (go). I hope he stays here," Nelson added with a laugh. Barring injury, U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley and Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar will leave Toronto for the World Cup. Nelsen expects Cesar to leave his team after the May 23 game against Sporting Kansas City. "Jermain, if he does (go), (will be) roughly about the same time," he added. "(U.S. manager Juergen Klinsmann) Juergen wants Michael now. Or tomorrow," Nelsen said with a smile. "But were trying to hold that. I think for Michael, it will probably be the 19th or the 20th that we lose him." The World Cup runs June 12 to July 13. INDIANAPOLIS -- Kurt Busch just made his attempt at completing The Double a lot tougher after crashing during Mondays practice at Indianapolis. Busch spun coming out of the second turn on the 2.5-mile oval and slammed hard into the outside wall. It was the biggest crash of the month. Andretti Autosport said Monday night the car would not be repaired by the Indy 500 and Busch will drive teammate Marco Andrettis backup car. Busch will still start 12th. Debris flew into the air, there was a small fire and one of the tires rolled dangerously down the track as the car rolled to a stop on the infield grass. But the hardest part for Busch was contemplating all the work that must be done now as he becomes the fourth driver to attempt completing both the Indianapolis Indy 500 and NASCARs Coca-Cola 600, 1,100 total miles, on the same day. Both races will be held Sunday. "This created a lot of work for the Andretti guys. I feel bad for that," he said. "As a rookie, theres things you learn and put it up on the edge and get away with and then theres times when it will bite you. Its just tough." Fortunately, Busch was not seriously hurt. IndyCar medical director Dr. Michael Olinger checked him at the infield medical centre and immediately cleared him to drive. Busch said he was fine and ready to return to racing Friday when the final 1-hour practice sessions will be held. Busch said it wasnt a big deal he had to switch cars because he completed his Indy rookie orientation program earlier this month in a different Andretti Autosport car. "The ability of the Andretti Autosport team to field the car, it doesnt matter how it starts, or where it comes from, theyve been very accurate with everything," Busch said by phone. "Ill get over it quick. Ive wrecked cars before." In the garage area, crew members covered the damaged right side of the car with blankets before moving in into the garage and closing the door. When some fans attempted to take parts from the car, Andretti Autosport team members chased them down and retrieved the parts. The team then took the car back to its Indy shop to determine whether the car could be repaired. "Weve already worked our crews to death, trying to work with this schedule," said Kyle Moyer, Andrettis director of racing operations. "But well get it done." Initially, officials said Busch would start from the back of the field if he used another car in the race. Series officials later clarified that would not be the case, something that should help Busch. He qualified 12th, the outside of Row 4 on the 33-car starting grid. No driver has won Indy after starting 33rd. What happened? "I was starting to feel comfortable," Busch said. "Thats when I made the mistake of just letting my guard down or settling into that long run-type mentality whereas with an Indy car you have to be on edge. You have to keep track of where you are at all times and the adjustments in the car." Other IndyCar drivers thought Busch may have been done in by his NASCAR roots. "It looked like he just got loose in two and it looked to me like he overcorrected, like you would in NASCAR," Josef Newgarden said. "The thing looked like it almost snapped straight, but then it went in on its side." Here are five other things from practice. NEW LEADER: Though the speed chart from Mondays practice means little because teams were working on race setup in traffic, Newgarden, who drives for Sarah Fishers team was the fastest of the day. His best lap was 227.105 mph. Juan Pablo Montoya, the 2000 Indy winner who drives for Roger Penske, was second at 226.532. Scott Dixon, also a previous Indy winner, was third at 226.433, for Target Chip Ganassi and Russias Mikhail Aleshin was the fastest rookie at 226.371. Aleshin was fourth. ACTING PRESIDENTIAL: NCAA President Mark Emmert got a chance to show a different side at Indianapolis. He opened practice waving the green flag and also got a chance to ride around the track with three-time Indy winner Dario Franchitti, who retired last fall. "That was the best ever," Emmert said. "He (Dario) was always my favourite driver. It was a complete surprise that he was driving it. It was wonderful to chat with him, and of course, ride around the track with him." MARRIAGE VOWS: Long-time Indianapolis 500 fans Cory and Linlee Patterson of Lafayette, Indiana, were married Sunday in one of the Tower Terrace suites. They met speedway president Doug Boles, pole-winner Ed Carpenter. They have attended the past five 500s together. OLYMPIC QUEST: Dallas Robinson and Abe Morlu, who worked with the U.S. bobsled and luge team at the Sochi Olympics, were at the track working with Buddy Laziers team Monday. They met Laziers engineer, David Cripps, at the Olympics and were reunited at the track. Robinson and Morlu worked with the team and took a ride in the 2-seater driven by Mario Andretti. THE SWITCHBACK?: NASCAR driver Parker Kligerman started his career in open-wheel cars. Now the 23-year-old is considering a move back. He would replace Busch in the Coca-Cola 600 if Busch doesnt make it back in time. "I have a love for open-wheel cars and its something that me and my manager Bob Perona have talked about," Kligerman said. "Ive been given a bit of a vacation right now, so Im taking the opportunity as a race fan and a racer to see whats out there and what the possibilities are." Employees may use any workplace object or surface in order to injure other employees. Remember: violence encourages others to better understand your way of thinking, and fosters respect in future disagreements. Those who attempt to settle minor disagreements with reason and dialogue shall be in violation of The Code. Major disagreements shall be settled by dropping the gloves and chucking knuckles. The last employee standing shall be considered in the right, though both employees shall be sent home for the duration of that workday. Third parties in disagreements are strictly forbidden, and any third party combatants shall be sent home without pay for the duration of the workweek, though will be considered to have grit and admirable character. Third party incidents shall be ignored if the number of those in the disagreement grows to include the division or team its entirety. Those not participating in a full-division disagreement shall be in violation of The Code and will be considered to be absent of grit and admirable character. 1.2 Benefits and Compensation Benefits and compensation shall henceforth be awarded without reason or rationale. Lower level employees will inexplicably, at times, be better compensated than executives or long-serving employees. Those in the Toronto offices shall be compensated at a rate double of that in regional offices. Performance shall have little to do with compensation. Unquantifiable intangibles will be cited as reasons for inflated remuneration. Those who have outstanding fourth quarters shall be rewarded for that quarter in ignorance of all previous quarters. Those who carry the bulk of the workload and adhere to The Code shall be rewarded in empty platitudes, but not monetarily, though will be considered to have grit and admirable character. 1.3 Responsibility Failure and underperformance by teams and divisions shall fall upon the team leaders and divisional executives. If teams or divisions fail to meet expectations, the team leader or divisional executive shall be summarily dismissed. Teams and divisions will publicly praise their dismissed leaders, and will promise to continue to support the organization with efforts of no less than 110%. 1.4 Discrimination and Harassment We expect and demand a respectful and professional work environment. Discrimination shall not be accepted under any circumstances, with the following exceptions: If it involves Europeans. If it involves French Canadians. If it involves non-Canadians. If its really funny. Harassment shall be tolerated only under the following circumstances: If it involves interns. If it involves first-year employees. If it involves guys who had it coming. If its really funny. For circumstances that do not fall into the above categories, please refer to The Code. 1.5 Statement on the Bearing of Firearms Carrying of firearms is strictly prohibited. This is not the NFL. 1.6 Health & Safety All workplace-related injuries and illnesses shall be kept private, and referred to only as upper- and lower-body ailments. Employees who are absent while suffering from workplace-related injuries and illnesses shall be considered to be lacking grit and admirable character. Should an employee be absent due to non-workplace health issues (hangovers, STDs, pregnant in an adulterous affair), their ailment shall be referred to as the flu or food poisoning. Information concerning hangovers, STDs, and pregnancies from adulterous affairs shall be kept within the organization, under the purview of The Code, and because they are indicative of grit and admirable character. For safety purposes, suits and protective headwear shall be worn at all times on the premises, and removed only in instances of disagrreements (see 1.dddddddddddd1) or celebration. Athletic supporters are not mandatory, but, cmon. 1.7 Nepotism Nepotism shall be rewarded and encouraged. Family members of previously successful employees shall be determined to possess equal or superior skills to the aforementioned. Automatic respect will be garnered. 1.8 Alcohol & Drugs Use of alcohol and drugs on work premises are strictly forbidden, except during celebrations or getting ready for a big day. Alcohol and drug use on employees personal time shall be discouraged, though ignored if said employees are productive or adhere to The Code or have grit and admirable character. 1.9 Media Relations After each workday, all employees shall be required to address the media. Team leaders and divisional executives shall issue brief statements, followed by terse and adversarial responses to the medias questions. The media shall, at all times, be considered ill-informed and intrusive. Employees will be permitted to answer questions with only the following five responses: We gave a 100% and put in a full day. Its all about the team. I refer you to The Code. Were taking it one day at a time. Only time will tell. Any media member who challenges the policies or activities of the organization will be questioned for not having previously worked in our industry, and dismissed for a lack of understanding of The Code or the merits of those who have grit and admirable character. 2.0 Treatment of Co-Workers All co-workers shall refer to each other by their first name or surname with a –y added to the end (Smith=Smithy or Smitty, Dave=Davey) or by a nickname that is equally affectionate and insulting. Adolescent, insulting, and vile language is henceforth the norm. Employees are encouraged to insult co-workers by calling each other by names that are not gender appropriate, referring to having intercourse with each others mothers and/or partners, and to question both the size and effectiveness of employees manhood. Such language is noted to adhere to The Code, and those who excel at its employment are seen to have grit and admirable character. 2.1 Transferability Henceforth, all employee contracts are transferable. Without notice or warning, any employee may be transferred to another organization. Reasoning for the transfer must include: Spite. Mismanagement. An attempt to shake things up. Disagreement over compensation. Perceived disrespect. Employees request. Failure to adhere to The Code. Lack of grit and/or admirable character. Alternately, employees may now be demoted to subsidiary organizations with lesser facilities in lesser locations, though these subsidiaries are known to foster grit and admirable character. 2.2 Repercussions Minor violation of any of these policies, or any act that violates The Code, will result in a half-day banishment to a secured cubicle that has been built in each divisions workspace. While in the secured cubicle, penalized employees will feel shame. Major violations shall require suspensions at the purview of management, though the length of any suspension shall not be related to any other. At the discretion of management, minor and major violations may be ignored if they are deemed to fall under the discretion of The Code. In such instances, the offending party shall be labeled as having grit and admirable character. Conclusion Each of these policies may change without notice or rationale at the discretion of management, and every 4-8 years the workplace shall be shutdown for 8 months to reevaluate all policies to the great frustration of our valued customers. All employees are forthwith encouraged to adhere to The Code and develop grit and admirable character, or they should go work for a European organization. MONTREAL -- It will be up to Frank Klopas to salvage something from an all-but lost 2014 season and try to build the Montreal Impact into a winning team. Club president Joey Saputo removed his friend and long-time Impact player, coach and manager Nick De Santis from his job as sporting director on Wednesday and handed control of the Major League Soccer team to Klopas, the head coach and director of player personnel. "Nick will have an administrative role, but will not be involved in the management of the technical team," said Saputo. Pressure from fans and the media had been building since the end of last season to replace De Santis, who seemed to be out of answers for a free fall that began with a 1-6-1 finish to the 2013 regular season and a 3-12-5 start to the 2014 campaign. De Santiss failure to make off-season changes other than replacing coach Marco Schallibaum with Klopas was his undoing, as the same weaknesses on defence and in the midfield that were exposed late last summer carried into this season. Now Klopas will have full control to decide who will play and who will sit out, and what trades or signings will be made. "He will have the responsibility to tweak this team according to what he feels he needs to be more competitive for the remainder of this season, the 2014 CONCACAF champions league and the 2015 season," said Saputo. The Impact have already made a handful of player moves since April, shipping out defender Jeb Brovsky, midfielders Collen Warner and Sanna Nyassi and forward Andrew Wenger. Midfielder Hernan Bernardello left in midseason to sign with a Mexican club. None of the moves made much difference as the Impact, now on a five-game losing run, sank further into the MLS basement. Saputo hopes to eliminate confusion over who is in charge, particularly among the players brought in by De Santis and those acquired by Klopas. "I want the message passed to the players that the person on top is Frank Klopas and not Nick De Santis. Its Frank who is the players boss," he said. Klopas is the Impacts third head coach in as many seasons in MLS, following Jesse Marsch for the expansion season in 2012 and Schallibaum last year. Saputo said he has assured Klopas, who signed in December for two years plus an option year, that he will have his job at least until the end of the 2015 campaign. "He has the security regardless of what happens this year, so if Frank decides tomorrow that he wants to start playing some of the younger players, I give him full responsibility, knowing that his job is not on the line," said Saputo. "Its obvious we need to change." The 47-year-old Klopas has extensive MLS experience as a player and as a former technical director and head coach of the Chicago Fire. It was De Santis who pushed for him to be hired. While reaching the MLS playoffs will be a long shot with only 14 regular season games left to play, the Impact can save face with a strong showing in the Champions League. They begin CONCACAF play Tuesday at home against FAS of El Salvador. One of the clubs high points came in 2009 when they drew more than 50,000 fans to Olympic Stadium for a quarter-final against Santos Laguna of Mexico. They also expect to have a second designated player, Argentine midfielder Ignacio Piatti, in camp starting next week. More player signings, although not a new DP, are planned for the off-season. Saputo did not say what De Santiss new duties will be. Montreal native De Santis has been part of the Impact since the team was formed from the ashes of the defunct Montreal Supra in 1993. The 46-year-old won an APSL championship as a player in 1994, won the A-League title as coach in 2004 and got a USL First Division championship as a manager in 2009. "He was a key element and architect of this organization and one of the reasons we are in MLS today," Saputo said of De Santis. "He is a friend, however, we are in a results-driven business and unfortunately, since July 2013, our results have not been what we expected them to be and hes paying the price for it." The Impacts next game is at home Saturday against Toronto FC. Diamondbacks Jerseys . SEATTLE -- Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon wants his team to take responsibility for this loss. Right fielder Cole Gillespie committed two of Seattles season-high five errors in a 9-7 loss Sunday to the Kansas City Royals. The five errors were three more than they had in a game this year and the teams most since Sept. 5, 2011, against the Los Angeles Angels. "One thing I dont do is make excuses for guys, so the onus is on the players in the locker room today," McClendon said. Johnny Giavotella had a three-run homer in a four-run seventh inning, helping the Royals rally from a 7-5 deficit. Alcides Escobar had given the Royals the early lead with a second-inning grand slam off starter Roenis Elias. But the Mariners rallied behind Dustin Ackleys two homers and Kyle Seagers two-run shot to take the 7-5 lead after five innings. Danny Farquhar (1-1), though, took over in the seventh and yielded all four runs. Farquhar was upset by a critical call by home umpire Marcus Pattillo three batters before Giavotellas home run. The Royals seventh began with a double by Eric Hosmer. Farquhar then struck out Billy Butler and appeared to strike out Danny Valencia on a 2-2 curveball. But Pattillo called it a ball, causing Farquhar to throw up his arms in disgust. "Im pretty sure umpires dont like that," Valencia said. Farquhar was upset and it seemed to have an impact on the rest of his inning. He ended up walking Valencia and Alex Gordon, loading the bases. Lorenzo Cain tied it with a sacrifice fly to centre. Then Giavotella, promoted from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday, hit Farquhars first pitch for his first home run. "Sometimes you want pitches and they are not called," Farquhar said. "You cant let that affect you. I want everything called a strike, so that is nothing different for me." Valencia added, its part of the game. Its going to happen. No ones perfect out there. Fortunately, it was in my favour." Royals manager Ned Yost, when asked about Farquhars borderline pitch, said, "We were upset when we didnt get a third strike on (Mike) Zunino, too, which ended up costing us two runs. Thats part of the game." That pitch came during the Mariners three-run, second-inning rally. After Ackley hit his first home run to open the iinning, Stephen Romero was hit by a pitch, bring up Zunino.dddddddddddd Starter Jeremy Guthrie believed he had Zunino struck out but it was called a ball. Zunino then singled to right and both runners scored on a double by Brad Miller, ending a 0-for-19 slide. Greg Holland came on in the ninth to pick up his ninth save in 10 opportunities. Louis Coleman (1-0), who worked a scoreless sixth, earned the victory. A pair of errors in the fourth allowed the Royals to build the lead by to 5-3. Giavotella walked and Escobar singled. Catcher Zunino tried to pick Giavotella off second but his throw scooted into centre for an error, with the runners advancing. First baseman Justin Smoak then bobbled Nori Aokis bouncer, allowing Giavotella to score. Seager, who missed the previous two games with flu-like symptoms, hit his sixth home run in the fourth followed by Ackleys second, his first career multihomer game. Ackley also had a home run in the sixth inning Saturday, giving him three in three straight at-bats. He has four on the season. "Ive been seeing the ball pretty well," Ackley said, "putting good swings on balls and not missing things." The Mariners added a run in the fifth on Corey Harts two-out single, scoring James Jones from second. Entering the game, the Royals had hit just 14 home runs, lowest in baseball. But seven of their nine runs scored via the long ball. "Sometimes errors are as contagious as hitting is," Ackley added. "Anything is contagious. We just have to scratch this one and move on. It was a tough game. I think we should have won it." NOTES: Mariners RF Michael Saunders, who slipped chasing a flyball in the third inning of Saturdays game, missed the game with a hyper-extended left knee. "Its a little sore but nothing thats going to hinder me from missing significant time," Saunders said. He pinch hit in the eighth and struck out. ... Mariners pitchers James Paxton (strained lat muscle) and Taijuan Walker (shoulder impingement) threw bullpen sessions before the game. Paxton is up to 40 pitches and will have another session Wednesday before a decision will be made where he will pitch next. DENVER -- Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run home run after No. 3 hitter Carlos Gonzalez was intentionally walked in front of him, Tyler Chatwood pitched seven strong innings for his first win of the season, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-1 Friday night. Tulowitzki went 3 for 3 on the night, drove in five runs and drew a key walk during the Rockies four-run first inning. Drew Stubbs and Charlie Blackmon added three hits apiece and the 1-2 hitters in the Rockies batting order combined to score five of Colorados runs. The 18 hits represented a season high for the Rockies and their run total matched a season high. Chatwood (1-0), who missed the first two weeks of the season with a left hamstring strain, allowed one unearned run on two hits in his second start of the season and first at home. Chatwood struck out six and walked one. Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (0-1) went four innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits. He was in trouble from the outset, giving up four runs in a 36-pitch first inning. Blackmon and Stubbs each singled to start the inning. Gonzalez was robbed when second baseman Chase Utley leaped high in the air to catch his sharply hit line drive, but Tulowitzki worked a walk to load the bases in a 14-pitch at-bat that included 10 foul balls, eight with the count full. Justin Morneau followed with a two-run double. Wilin Rosario had a run-scoring groundout and Nolan Arenado singled up the middle to drive in the Rockies fourth run. It didnt get any better for Pettibone in the second as Blackmon singled and was sacrificed to second. The Phillies opted to intentionally walk Gonzalez, a lifetime .395 hitter in 23 previous games against Philadelphia, and go after Tulowitzki. He responded by driving an 0-1 offering into the stand of evergreens beyond the centre field wall for his second home run of the season, upping Colorados lead to 7-0. The Rockies went up 8-0 on Tulowitzkis run-scoring double in the fourth, before the Phillies got on the scoreboard in the fifth. After Carlos Ruiz reached on third baseman Arenados two-out fielding error, Cody Asche singled to centre for the Phillies first hit of the game and pinch hitter Jayson Nix, batting for Pettibone, singled to score Ruiz. Colorado got that run back on Tulowitzkis RBI single in the sixth. The Royals took advantage of their chances while the Blue Jays came up empty. Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain homered as Kansas City defeated Toronto 6-1 on a glorious spring evening at Rogers Centre. Jose Bautista went deep for the Blue Jays, who left 14 men on base and were outhit 9-8. Jason Vargas outduelled J.A. Happ in Kansas Citys second straight victory over the Blue Jays, who had their nine-game winning streak end a night earlier. Toronto (32-24) was a woeful 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position. "When you get on one of those hot streaks that we were on, we were cashing those in," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "But Vargas was really, really good." The Kansas City starter allowed seven hits and one earned run over six innings. Gordon homered in the fourth and Cain added another two-run shot in the eighth to knock Happ out of the game. Despite the loss, Toronto maintained its 2 1/2-game lead on second-place New York in the American League East division standings after the Yankees dropped a 6-1 decision to Minnesota. The Blue Jays entered this four-game series on an offensive tear, piling up the runs over three straight series sweeps. The trick will be keeping that win streak hangover to a minimum. "When you win nine games in a row, you expect to come out the next day and win," said Toronto catcher Erik Kratz. "That mentality hasnt changed the last two nights. We were a couple inches away last night from winning and tonight we were a couple hits away from being back in this game." After the game, the Blue Jays announced that top prospect Marcus Stroman had been recalled from triple-A Buffalo and would start Saturday afternoon. "We want to see him as a starter," Gibbons said. "Hes been really good down there this year and this is his opportunity." Toronto looked ready to do some damage in the first inning after Jose Reyes led off with a triple and Bautista reached on a walk. But like he did all night, Vargas snuffed out the threat. "I feel something like that hopefully sets the tone for the game and fires us up," he said. "We were able to get a run the next inning and keep it moving from there." Kansas City (26-28) padded its lead when Gordon smacked his fourth home run of the season. That waas more than enough offence for Vargas (5-2), who allowed seven hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out seven.dddddddddddd Bautista gave the crowd of 21,543 a charge in the fifth with his 14th home run of the season. Edwin Encarnacion followed with a two-out walk but Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., struck out. Happ (4-2) was tagged for six earned runs and nine hits over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two batters and had six strikeouts. Toronto brought the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh against reliever Aaron Crow. Bautista walked and Lawrie hit a two-out single but Dioner Navarro flew out. In the eighth, Cain tacked on some insurance runs with his second home run of the season. "This is more of the offence that we envisioned coming out of spring training," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "Were not going to be a club thats going to lead the league in home runs but weve got home run power that we havent used." Recent triple-A callup Bobby Korecky relieved Happ in the eighth and retired the lone batter he faced. With the bullpen in need of a rest, he stayed on for the ninth and retired the Royals in order. Korecky was sent back down after the game. Notes: Stroman pitched in a relief role earlier this season before being stretched out again in Buffalo. The move also allows the Blue Jays to give Drew Hutchison -- whos coming off Tommy John surgery -- a little more rest. Hutchison will now start Tuesday. ... Bautista threw out a runner at first base for the second straight night. Omar Infante hit a flare into right field that he thought was going into the seats. Bautista slid and trapped the ball after it bounced before getting Infante in plenty of time at first base. "I dont know if youll see a better play in baseball today than that play right there," Yost said. "Omar hit the ball and lost it, he thought it was foul. For Bautista to come, smother the ball, one, and then still see that he had a play at first base, I dont think Ive ever seen a play like that. Tremendous play." ... Encarnacion, who has hit 16 homers this month, walked three times. ... The game took three hours one minute to play. ... Right-hander Aaron Brooks (0-0) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Royals. ... The Blue Jays have homered in 12 of their last 13 games. ... HAMILTON - The Abbotsford Heat twice battled back from a goal behind on Sunday, before finally edging ahead in the shootout. Markus Granlund scored the shootout winner as the Heat defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 in the American Hockey League. "It was tough on us, losing the last few games, and with this being our last game before Christmas we will definitely take the win," said Granlund. Dean Arsene and Ben Hanowski had goals for the Heat (21-9-2), while Joni Ortio stopped 32 shots. The win ended a three-game losing streak for Abbotsford. Joonas Nattinen had a goal and an assist, and Joel Chouinard also scored for the Bulldogs (12-14-4). Dustin Tokarski made 39 saves. Hamilton has now lost five consecutive games. "We have to bring those points home," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "Its disappointing. "Abbotsford is a good team, and theyre not in first place in our conference for nothing. Theyre a team that battles and competes." Granlund scored on Abbotsfords second attempt of the shootout, while Corban Knight added a goal on the fourth attempt. Ortio stopped all four Hamilton shots. A penalty to Hamiltons Mike Blunden just 49 seconds into the first period put the Bulldogs on their heels, and the hosts struggled to exit their defensive zone early in the period. It took Hamilton nearly seven minutes to register its first shot, but the Bulldogs began to manufacture offensive pressure with the trio of Nattinen, Justin Courtnall and Stefan Fournier establishing a cycle midway through the period. The Heat forced several tough saves from Bulldogs goaltender Tokarski, with the sharpest of those coming with four and a half minutes to play in the period. Abbotsford broke into the offensive zone through the right wing, and Tokarski denied a low slap shot intended for his far post and smothered the loose puck. The goaltender turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the first period, while his counterpart Ortio successfully stopped nine. Hamilton capitalized on offensive pressure in the aftermath of a power play to open the scoring at 4:35 of the second period. Morgan Ellis took a low slap shot from the point that bounced to Fournier in the low slot, and he tipped it ahead to Nattinen. The centre moved to his backhand and slotted the puck past a diving Ortio. As Abbotsford chased an equalizer, it was Blunden who nearly doubled Hamiltons lead a minute and a half later when Martin St. Pierre found him with a cross-ice pass and the winger fired a rising wrist shot that Ortio knocked to the corner with his shoulder. The Heat found the tying goal on a seemingly harmless play, as Arsene took a long-range wrist shot that eluded Tokarski and clipped his far post as it crossed the goal line at 9:56 of the second period. Arsenes goal was his first of the season. Hamilton re-established a lead at 11:18 of the second period, when another defenceman, Chouinard, scored his first goal of the season. Jordan Owens found Nattinen in the high slot with a centring pass, and the forward responded to defensive pressure with a drop pass to Chouinard at the blue-line. The defenceman fired a low slap shot that moved through traffic and beat the screened Ortio. The Heat struck early in the third period to level the game once again, as Hanowski pounced on a rebound to score at 4:47. Tokarski reacted well to stop Josh Jooris initial shot with his left pad, but Hanowski beat the Bulldogs defenders to the rebound and chipped it high and past the downed goaltender. The play was wide open and frantic in the final minutes of the third period as both teams searched for a winning goal. Tokarski made two exceptional saves before the period came to a close, and denied Sven Baertschi from close range without a stick with 23 seconds to play. Lefebvre was not content with his teams loose play in the period that repeatedly forced Tokarski into action. "Thats not the style that we want to play," he said. "We got stuck in our own zone on a few long shifts, and (Abbotsford) got a few good scoring chances. Thats where Tokarski had to be good, and he gave us a chance to win the game tonight." Abbotsford enjoyed a minute and a half of 4-on-3 power-play time to open the overtime period, but could not find a way past Tokarski. Numbers Game looks at the Wild signing Thomas Vanek. The Wild Get: LW Thomas Vanek. Vanek, 30, has been one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the game. Since 2006-2007, his 252 goals ranks fourth, behind Alex Ovechkin, Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk. Vanek is a four-time 30-goal scorer who has scored at least 20 goals in each of the last nine seasons. Only Ovechkin and Rick Nash have managed that same feat. So, with that goal-scoring resume, Vanek should have been incredibly appealing as a free agent, but there was the small matter of his slump in the playoffs that left a sour taste for some. Vanek had eight points in 10 games, through Game Six of the Boston series, but fell flat after that, managing two assists and a total of eight shots on goal in the next seven games. He played under 15 minutes in each of his last eight playoff games. For a season in which he played a career-high 19:21 per game, with the Sabres, Islanders and Canadiens, that role reduction made it clear that Vanek would be moving on from Montreal. This following a season during which he scored 15 points in 18 games with the Habs, giving him 68 points in 78 games while moving around the Eastern Conference. Which brings us to Minnesota, which had been linked to Vanek pretty much from the get-go of his contract year. Vanek played college hockey at the University of Minnesota. His wife is from Minnesota. The Wild would have Dany Heatleys $7.5-million cap hit coming off the books. Former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville was playing well for Minnesota. It was all lining up for Vanek with the Wild. Ultimately, nothing really changed that. Maybe a great playoff would have given Vanekk more leverage on the open market, but he didnt sign a break-the-bank deal, inking for $19.dddddddddddd5-million over three years. The $6.5-million annual cap hit is actually less than Vaneks previous contract, but when a player has a preferred destination, and particularly when he has earned a boatload of money in his career already (more than $57-million in his career, according to Cap Geek), there is an opportunity for a team to get him for less than the top price on the market. That Vanek was willing to accept a three-year term is a clear indication that Minnesota was his preferred location. When it comes to his game, Vanek doesnt use his size (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) very effectively, aside from when hes in front of the net, where he positions well for tip-ins, deflections, screens, etc. Throughout his career, Vanek hasnt been much of a puck possession player, varying up and down a little bit in relative terms from year to year, but Vanek has always been a high-percentage finisher in his own right and consistently had high on-ice shooting percentages (which includes others on the ice with him in 5-oin-5 play), so hes going to bring offence to Minnesota. Depending on how the Wild want their lines to shake out, Vanek should have either Mikael Granlund or Mikko Koivu -- two pass-first playmaking centres -- setting the table for him and if Vanek is getting opportunties -- he had a career-high 3.18 shots on goal per game last season -- take 25 goals to the bank, with 30 or 35 possible at the top end. This is a nice upgrade for the Wild, who made some noise in the playoffs and have added a premier goal-scorer to their mix and have done so without spending too much in order to get him. ORLANDO, Fla. -- When Magic coach Jacque Vaughn was asked about his teams noticeable win discrepancy this season in games at home versus on the road, he likened their home floor to feeling like a "fluffed pillow" for his young team. It found that warm embrace again, this time at the expense of a team fighting for its playoff positioning. Tobias Harris had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Orlando beat the Portland Trail Blazers 95-85 on Tuesday night to stop a nine-game losing streak. Nik Vucevic added 22 points and 10 boards for the Magic, who led by just eight at the half but used scoring spurts in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away. Victor Oladipo had 13 points and six assists. Orlando improved to 16-18 at home, compared to 4-34 on the road. "When you play on the road its a lot different," Harris said. "Their crowd gives them energy just like our crowd does. We know we have to get better on the road, but were playing good at home and tonight was a good win for us." The Magic earned their fifth victory against a Western Conference team, but just their third over one that entered the night in position to make the playoffs. Orlando previously posted wins against the Clippers and Thunder in the Amway Center. The Magic also matched their win total for all of last season with nine games remaining. "I was really pleased with the mental focus that we had from the beginning of the game, to come out and not use being on the West Coast as an excuse," Vaughn said. "It was impressive to hold that team to 85 points." Robin Lopez led Portland with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Blazers, who entered the night in fifth place in the West, have lost three straight. They were without forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed his seventh consecutive game with a lower back contusion. After getting blown out at Charlotte on Saturday, the Blazers rebounded and showed lots of fight in nearly upending defending champion Miami on Monday night. They didnt seem to have anything left at times against Orlando, which went right at Portlands front line. The Magic outscored the Blazers 46-44 in the paint. Portland coach Terry Stotts said before the game that the tight playoff race in the West dictated a need to "accumulate wins where we can get them." He acknowledged afterward that they missed one of those opportunities against the Magic. "This is a very, extremely disappointing loss and in fact it was a game we needed to have," Stotts said. "Weve got 10 games left. Theres got to be a sense of urgency every game. Playoff race is tight. Wed like to look forward, but weve got four teams that are right on our heels, and every game has a new sense of urgency." The Magic closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run and increased their lead to 19 in the opening minutes of the fourth. Harris was the most active player for Orlando in the final quarter, scoring eight points. The Blazers were finally able to string together some baskets and cut the lead down to 11 points on a 3-pointer by Wesley Matthews with 2:31 to play. But the Magic were able to close out the game from the foul line. Orlando took an eight-point lead into halftime after shooting 50 per cent from the field in the first half. Vucevic led the scoring effort with 14 points. The Magic also had 10 assists on their 21 baskets, including four from Oladipo. Lopez scored 10 first-half points for Portland, which shot just 40 per cent from the field. The Blazers also struggled from the foul line, connecting on only 2 of their 12 attempts. The victory aside, Vaughn said there wont be any heavy focus on wins or losses for his team the rest of the way. "Have not mentioned one time what our record is to the team," he said. "What I do mention to those guys, and (will) when we practice on Thursday, is lets come to work and get better. Thats how well continue to judge each other and continue to push each other." NOTES: Orlando improved to 5-24 against the Western Conference. ... The Magic honoured Grant Hill between the first and second quarter as part of their "Legends Nights" season-long series to honour former players as part of the teams 25th anniversary season celebration. NASHVILLE -- Nashville desperately needs better offensive players for new coach Peter Laviolette, and the Predators believe they took a very small gamble with the chance for a big reward by signing veteran forwards Mike Ribeiro and Derek Roy to one-year contracts. General manager David Poile called signing Ribeiro a great opportunity to add a talented, experienced and creative centre Tuesday when he introduced the veteran at a news conference. Ribeiros contract is worth $1.05 million after being bought out of the final three years of a $22 million contract by the Coyotes recently. "He knows hes living day to day," Poile said of Ribeiro. "Hes on a one-year contract." Ribeiro has 202 goals and 454 assists in 865 career regular-season games but had only 16 goals and 31 assists in 80 games for the Coyotes last season after his new deal. Arizona general manager Don Maloney said Ribeiro had "real behavioural issues" they could not tolerate, and that kept Ribeiro available until he and his agent called Poile last week. Ribeiro and his wife even paid for their own airfare, flying to Nashville to spend the past four days in town. The 34-year-old centre said Tuesday that he was separated from his wife during the season and rarely saw his children. Once the season ended, he said he went to work on his personal life and now has his head clear. He and his wife are looking at buying a house in Nashville. "Im really glad I have a chance to come here and to prove to everyone that I can still play, and that I am a good person and that Im committed to my family but to the team too and to do well," Ribeiro said. "And Im glad that I have a chance to do that." Poile said the Predators did their "due diligence" by talking too former teammates, coaches, managers and others.ddddddddddddThe general manager also talked to Ribeiros wife during their visit to Nashville. That made the Predators comfortable with signing Ribeiro. Roys deal is worth $1 million. He had nine goals and 28 assists in 75 games for the St. Louis Blues last season. He has 177 goals and 315 assists in 666 career regular-season games, but he said in a conference call Tuesday afternoon that he has spent this summer working in Toronto after dealing with knee and shoulder injuries. He hopes to regain the form that saw him score more than 63 points in four straight seasons in Buffalo. "Its been a tough few years bouncing around, and hopefully this is going to be good for me and I know that," said Roy, who has been with Dallas, Vancouver and St. Louis over the past two seasons. Its been a busy off-season for Nashville after missing the playoffs for a second straight year. The Predators not only replaced Barry Trotz with Laviolette, they also swapped a couple players to Pittsburgh for James Neal and signed Olli Jokinen. Roy will help replace centre Mike Fisher, who is out up to six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon this summer. Poile said the Predators could have up to six new forwards once the season starts, which should help a team led in scoring by defenceman and captain Shea Weber last season. "These are significant additions to change the way our team has played," Poile said. Notes: The Predators have signed Viktor Arvidsson, their fourth-round draft selection in June, to a three-year, entry-level contract. Arvidsson, 21, took part in the teams development camp last week, and he ranked ninth with 40 points in the Swedish Hockey League in the 2013-14 season. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Ready to Start The Ottawa Senators fourth loss in five games against the Hurricanes on Saturday dropped them to 12th in the Eastern Conference but the team remains just three points back of the final wild card spot, held by their division rivals from Detroit. Ottawas brain trust has concluded meetings to discuss strategy for the trade deadline and the teams new assistant general manager Pierre Dorion told The Ottawa Citizen that he feels the Sens group is ready whenever business picks up. “We identified possible targets for possible trades,” he told the Citizens Ken Warren. “You always have to be ready for that possibility, for players that could help us in the short or long term.” Warren believes the Sens have prioritized a winger for Jason Spezza as being the teams greatest need and that they could be in the market for a rental such as Matt Moulson or Ales Hemsky. Shane-O Max? Calgary Flames defenceman Shane OBrien cleared waivers on Sunday and the veteran was assigned to Abbotsford of the American Hockey League. Going unclaimed does not bode well for his future in Calgary, but acting Flames general manager Brian Burke hopes to do right by OBrien before the deadline. “We thought someone might grab him because hes a good player,” Burke told the Calgary Herald. “Obviously the extra year of his contract is the killer, so now well see if we can structure a trade and well see if theres a team that would take him if we arent part of the obligations...that will be the first order of the day." Jets Packed Currently seven points out, the Winnipeg Jets playoff odds might point to them selling off pieces before the deadline. Rentals such as Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi are believed to be available, but the Jets face a tough decision with defensive stalwart Mark Stuart. He is eligible for free agency come summer and The Winnipeg Free Press has speculated that he could be available in hopes of garnering assets from a contender before re-signing him during the off-season. The paper adds that its a risky proposition, but if the Jets cant reach a deal with Stuart before Mar. 5 yet are still confident in luring him back come July it could prove a shrewd move by GM Kevin Chevaldayoff. Made Marian Its long been believed that the Columbus Blue Jackets could be moving veteran forward Marian Gaborik prior to the deadline. However, his recent injury history may actually bode well for his future in the Ohio Capital. The Columbus Dispatch noted that Gaboriks experience - plus his recent injury struggles - could place him in a unique position for his next contract. Should Gaborik remain on injured reserve through the Olympic break, Aaron Portzline notes he will exceed 100 days. NHL veterans who have played 400 or more career games and spend 100 days or more on injured reserve are eligible to sign contracts with bonus structures. Serena Williams likes to make one thing clear: She is never satisfied, no matter how many matches and tournaments she wins. Driven as ever, Williams won plenty this year. She went 78-4 with 11 titles, including at the French Open and U.S. Open, raising her Grand Slam championship total to 17. She compiled a 34-match winning streak. She earned more than $12 million in prize money, a record for womens tennis. In February, she became the oldest No. 1 in WTA rankings history and never left that perch. Thanks to all of that, Williams was honoured Wednesday as The Associated Press 2013 Female Athlete of the Year. Its the third AP award for Williams, following 2002 and 2009. Only two women have been chosen more often as AP Athlete of the Year since the annual awards were first handed out in 1931. "Whenever I lose, I get more determined, and it gives me something more to work toward," Williams told the AP in an interview shortly before the start of the U.S. Open. "I dont get complacent, and I realize I need to work harder and I need to do better and I want to do better — or I wouldnt keep playing this game." The vote by news organizations was about as lopsided as many of Williams matches this season. She received 55 of 96 votes, while Brittney Griner, a two-time AP Player of the Year in college basketball and the No. 1 pick in Aprils WNBA draft, finished second with 14. Swimmer Missy Franklin was next with 10. The Male Athlete of the Year recipient will be announced Thursday. Williams, who grew up in Compton, Calif., and turned 32 in September, produced the finest womens tennis season in years. According to the WTA: — her .951 winning percentage was the best since Steffi Grafs .977 in 1989; — her 11 titles were the most since Martina Hingis 12 in 1997; — her winning streak was the longest since her sister, Venus, had a 35-match run in 2000. "She just continues to be an inspiration to American tennis," said Gordon Smith, the executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association, which runs the U.S. Open. "Her year this year? Unforgettable." By adding a fifth career U.S. Open championship, and a second French Open title, Williams also moved within one Grand Slam trophy of the 18 apiece won by Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. The record is 24 by Margaret Court. Pretty heady company. Evert is one of the only two women with more AP awards than Williams. Evert won four from 1974-80, while Babe Didrikson collected a record six — one for track in 1932, and five for golf from 1945-54. "Serena already has provided significant contributions to taking our sport to the next level. ... She is chasing records and no doubt will break many records before shes finished," WTA Chairman Stacey Allaster said. "That obviously just brings a lot more attention to our sport." Two particular moments in 2013 stuck out to Allaster. One came at Qatar in February, when Williams cried after assuring herself of returning to No. 1 for the first time since 2010, the year the American needed two operations on her right foot and got blood clots in her lungs. "You could see the joy, the tears of joy. It meant so much to her, from everything she had been through, to be able to be back at the top of the sport, a sport that she does truly love," Allaster said. The second moment came during Wimbledon, when Williams joined other women who have been ranked No. 1 at a celebration of the WTAs 40th anniversary. "It was an opportunity to see her in a leadership position. ... She did a remarkable job at speaking on behalf of all those great athletes and speaking to future players," Allaster said. "Theres a little girl, perhaps out there in Compton, who is dreaming of playing on the WTA, and Serena said, Were waiting for you, and we cant wait to meet you." The Maple Leafs dropped a 4-2 decision to the hosting Washington Capitals on Friday.Martin St. Louis will be in the lineup tonight when the New York Rangers face the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference second round series. St. Louis mother France passed away suddenly on Thursday. Head coach Alain Vigneault said St. Louis traveled to his familys home in Montreal the night before but has since returned and will play. Pittsburgh has pushed the Rangers to the brink of elimination as the Penguins hold a 3-1 advantage after dropping the first game of the series in overtime. Since losing Game 1 in the Steel City, the Pens have rattled off three straight wins, outscoring New York by a combined 9-2 margin along the way. After getting shut out by Marc-Andre Fleury in Games 2 and 3, New York was able to score twice in Wednesdays meeting in Manhattan but it wasnt enough to even the series. Instead, the Penguins earned a 4-2 decision to grab a commanding lead in the best-of-seven set and give them a chance to end the series tonight on home ice. New York has won seven of its last nine games when facing elimination, including two of four on the road. Pittsburgh, however, is 9-2 all-time in series when holding a 3-1 lead. The last time the Penguins blew a 3-1 lead was in the 2011 Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Tampa Bay when both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were injured and missed the series. New York halted a scoring drought at 145 minutes, 30 seconds on Carl Hagelins goal early in the second period of Game 4, but the club continued to struggle on the power play. The Rangers went 0-for-2 with the man advantage on Wednesday and have now failed on 36 straight power-play chances. The last power-play goal for the Rangers came in Game 2 of their first-round victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. "We havent earned it enough, we havent executed enough," Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said of his teams overall effort in this series. "We have looks, cant finish, and havent made it hard on the goalie and are not capitalizing on the chances we are given. We have to play better on all areas of the ice (Friday)." The clubs power-play situation plumbed new depths in Game 4, with New York not only failing to score on the man advantage once again but the Rangers also allowed a shorthanded goal to Brandon Sutter late in the second period. Sutters tally made it 2-1 with 1:33 remaining in the period and Pittsburgh would hold a lead the rest of the way. Malkin contributed a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, while Chris Kunitz and Jussi Jokinen also liit the lamp to help the Pens grab a commanding series lead.dddddddddddd. Crosby added two assists in the game and Pittsburghs captain has nine points in the playoffs. Malkin leads the team with 12 points (5g, 7a). Fleury, who in Games 3 and 4 became the first Penguins goalie to record back- to-back playoff shutouts, only needed to make 13 saves for Wednesdays victory. The 15 shots allowed by Pittsburgh in Game 4 were the fewest surrendered in a playoff game in franchise history. "Its a nice cushion you know, but nothings done," said Fleury. "Its fun for now, its a nice win. But get back at it Friday." Pittsburgh did lose Brooks Orpik once again after the defenseman returned from a five-game absence due to an undisclosed injury. Orpik was hurt Wednesday after colliding with Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello late in the first period and did not return. If Orpik is unable to go in Game 5, Robert Bortuzzo expects to take his place in the lineup. Bortuzzo had an assist and was a plus-2 while filling in for Orpik in five games during this postseason. Zuccarello scored in the third period for New York and Henrik Lundqvist gave up all four goals on 27 shots. New York head coach Alain Vigneault blamed the Game 4 loss largely on his teams carelessness with the puck. "We didnt pick a good night to manage the puck the way we did tonight," said Vigneault. "I dont want to take any credit against Pittsburgh, they forced the play and they played a real solid game without the puck that obviously forced us into a lot of those turnovers." The Rangers had speedy forward Chris Kreider in the lineup for the first time since late March in Game 4, and the 23-year-old experienced some ups and downs. Kreider, who returned after recovering from surgery to his left hand, had one shot on net and was a minus-one after logging 15:24 of ice time. "I felt good one shift, rusty the next, good for a shift, rusty the next," Kreider said. "Im excited to play the next one because we have another opportunity. Whenever a team goes deep into this thing they always face some adversity, and thats what weve got right here. This is an opportunity to see what we are made of. Its gut-check time." If New York is able to win Fridays game in the Steel City, it will host Game 6 on Sunday.
