The St. Louis Cardinals were scheduled to arrive in Boston in time for a workout on Tuesday afternoon. Much of Mondays discussion focused on Bostons lineup considerations as the series progresses, specifically when the venue shifts to St.SAN JOSE, Calif. - Ryan Miller withstood an early barrage and last-second flurry to carry Vancouver to a big win in San Jose.Miller made 34 saves and was on the right side of a replay review that determined a potential tying goal for the Sharks came an instant too late, giving the Canucks a 3-2 win Thursday night to open their California swing.I got fortunate that we ran out of time to play and it worked out in our favour, Miller said. With the goalie pulled, San Jose pushed furiously for a tying goal and appeared to get it when Tommy Wingels pass deflected off a defenceman and right to Joe Thornton by the side of the net. Thorntons shot hit off Millers blocker and trickled over the goal line, sending the crowd into a tizzy. But a replay review showed the puck crossed the goal line just after the clock expired, giving the Canucks the win.I was hopeful, because I heard the horn when I knew the puck was over there, Miller said. I just didnt know how close.Radim Vrbata, Alex Edler and Nick Bonino scored for the Canucks, who now head to Southern California for weekend games against Los Angeles and Anaheim.Vancouver won just two of 14 games last season against the three California teams, playing a big role in the Canucks missing the playoffs in their first season in the new Pacific Division.James Sheppard and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks, who controlled the play but still lost in their final game before a grueling trip of seven road games in 11 days. Antti Niemi made 16 saves. It was frustrating at times, forward Joe Pavelski said. You get one at the end and just run out of time. We had our chances and we just didnt execute. We didnt finish on them.Miller was tested early with San Jose getting four scoring chances in the opening minutes. He then stood tall again late, making a good save on Couture shortly before Thorntons final shot. The puck went in, it jusst happened a little late, Thornton said.dddddddddddd. We threw everything at them but couldnt get it in. It was so close, I couldnt tell. If only we have another half-second wed be all right. We feel like we let this one get away from us.The Canucks fell behind 2-1 midway through the second when Couture capped a pretty passing sequence on the power play with his team-leading seventh goal.Vancouver then scored twice in a span of less than 5 minutes to take the lead into the third. The equalizer came when Edler beat Niemi with a shot from the top of the circle for a power-play goal. The Canucks then took advantage of a break that came when Tomas Hertl broke his stick attempting a one-timer. That turnover keyed a rush by Alexandre Burrows, who carried the puck into the offensive zone before finding Bonino.Bonino skated around the stickless Hertl and beat Niemi for his team-leading seventh goal to give the Canucks a 3-2 lead.It proves our resiliency, Bonino said. We come in and play probably two of our worst periods of the year but we had Millsy back there shutting the door and keeping us in the game. The Sharks scored first for the 10th time in 14 games this season when the newly formed third line struck midway through the first period. Tyler Kennedy, making his season debut after being sidelined by an upper-body injury in training camp, kept the puck in near the blue line and fed Hertl, who found Sheppard for the goal. But San Jose gave that lead back when Thornton couldnt keep a puck in the offensive zone along the boards. That led to a 2-on-1 break and Vrbata beat Niemi with 7.7 seconds to play.NOTES: Burrows returned from a three-game suspension for a hit to the head of Montreal D Alexei Emelin. ... BARCELONA, Spain -- Osasuna beat Getafe 2-0 at home on Sunday to move four points clear of the Spanish leagues relegation zone, while substitute Humberto Osorio scored twice as Valladolid came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Elche. Also, Real Sociedad was held 0-0 at its Anoeta Stadium by Levante and the inspired form of its goalkeeper, Keylor Navas. Osasunas Oriol Riera opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Francisco Silva spotted his run behind Getafes disjointed defence with a long pass that the striker expertly used one touch to lift over goalkeeper Miguel Moya. Roberto Torres capped the win in Pamplona on the break with two minutes to play. The closest Getafe came to scoring was Angel Lafitas header off the upright in the 34th as it remained winless in eight rounds. Elche went ahead on the waterlogged pitch at Valladolids Jose Zorilla Stadium through goals by Ferran "Coro" Corominas in the 34th and Manuel del Moral in the 66th. Valladolid coach Juan Ignacio Martinez sent on Osorio in the 69th and the forward responded by scoring in the 71st and 78th. Valladolids comeback was undermined when newcomer Jeffren Suarez, recently arrived from Sporting Lisbon, was injured with 10 minutes to play and his team had no substitutions to make. The draw left Valladolid in the drop zone, three points from safety. Levante keeper Navas denied Sociedad forwards Imanol Agirretxe and Antoine Griezmann on two occasions each in the first half before stretching to palm Gonzalo Castros shot over his bar in the 69th. Sociedad stayed in sixth place. It hosts Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinals on Tuesday looking to overturn its 2-0 loss in the first leg. "We did enough to win, but Levantes defensive discipline was too much," Sociedad midfielder Markel Bergara said. "Now we have to think about Barcelona. We know it will be tough, but we will give it our all." Later Sunday, Barcelona visits Sevilla looking for a win that would take the defending champions into a three-way tie for the league lead with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. MANAUS, Brazil -- Xherdan Shaqiris hat trick put Switzerland into the second round of the World Cup, and kept coach Ottmar Hitzfeld gainfully employed for at least a few more days. Shaqiri scored a pair of first-half goals and added another in the second Wednesday to give Switzerland a 3-0 victory over Honduras, a result that put the Swiss in second place in Group E behind France. "We knew that we were going to show great football today," said Shaqiri, a Bayern Munich winger. "For us, this has been really a dream to be in the World Cup, small Switzerland in the World Cup." The small Swiss will next face the not-so-small Lionel Messi and Argentina on Tuesday in Sao Paulo in what could be Hitzfelds final match. The German veteran, a two-time Champions League winner as a coach, has said this tournament will be his last. "We are really anxious for that. We also know that we are not the favourites for the match, but we are going to try for victory," Shaqiri said. "Getting to the round of 16, everything is possible. You never know." Shaqiri scored his first goal in the sixth minute, dribbling into a crowd of defenders and curling a shot into the net off the underside of the crossbar. In the 31st, he collected a pass from Josip Drmic after a defensive error and easily beat Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares. Shaqiri completed his hat trick in the 71st. Drmic did well to beat Honduras defender Victor Bernardez on the left and pass to a charging Shaqiri, who one-timed his shot past a diving Valladares. In the other Group E game, France held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw. The match at the Arena da Amazonia was the fourth and final game to be played in the Brazilian rainforest, and was the second to have an official cooling break because of the stifling heat and humidity. According to FIFA, it was 26 degrees C (79 degrees F) with the humidity at 88 per cent when the match started. Referee Nestor Pitana of Argentina made the decision to stop the match in the 39th, and the break lasted for about a minute. There was also an official break in the first half of the United States-Portugal match on Sunday. After three 6 p.m. starts at the Arena da Amazonia, Wednesdays match started at 4 p.m. But a noontime thunderstorm combiined with overcast skies and a slight breeze cooled the temperature a bit after several days of sunny skies and oppressive heat.dddddddddddd "Toward the end things were getting tougher, but we managed to deal with this," Hitzfeld said. "We ran for the ball." The extreme weather had been something Honduras was looking forward to. The Central American country has a similar climate, and they often play qualifiers under the same circumstances in an effort to gain an advantage over opposing teams. On Wednesday, Honduras struggled to create much on the attacking end, but did manage several decent attempts in the second half. The teams best chance came in the 52nd minute when striker Jerry Bengtson beat Switzerland goalkeeper Diego Benaglio but had his shot cleared off the line by defender Ricardo Rodriguez. A few minutes later, Honduras screamed for a penalty after substitute Jerry Palacios went down in the area with Switzerland defender Johan Djourou on his back, but Pitana decided otherwise. "The second half was very good. We had three or four chances to score, but to score a goal is a different story," said Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez, who said he would not continue as coach of the national team. "In a sense, we disappointed our nation." Switzerland and Honduras played each other at the World Cup in South Africa exactly four years ago, on June 25, 2010, but that match ended in a 0-0 draw and both teams were eliminated. This time, the Swiss move on and Hitzfeld has plenty more work to do against Argentina. "(Its) going to be a match that we have nothing to lose. We have a lot to gain," Hitzfeld said. "We do have a chance, even against Argentina." ------ Lineups: Honduras: Noel Valladares; Brayan Beckeles, Victor Bernardez, Maynor Figueroa, Juan Carlos Garcia; Oscar Boniek Garcia (Andy Najar, 77), Jorge Claros, Wilson Palacios, Roger Espinoza (Marvin Chavez, 46); Carlo Costly (Jerry Palacios, 40), Jerry Bengtson. Rickie Lambert has told Sky Sports News HQ he hopes to remain a West Brom player next season but could leave on loan if not part of Tony Pulis plans. The former Southampton forward made five Premier League starts for West Brom last season, scoring one goal, but is keen to make it work at The Hawthorns.I hope to remain with West Brom, he said. Ill be going to pre-season and then see what happens. Lambert left Liverpool for West Brom in a £3m deal My objective is to help West Brom, thats what I want to do, but it didnt happen for me last season.Ill have to see what happens when I get back and then go from there. My main thought in my head is to come back in the best shape possible. Saido Berahino was often preferred to Lambert off the bench for West Brom Saido Berahino and Salomon Rondon each made more than 30 league appearances for Albion last season, compared to 19 for Lambert, and Pulis was aware the striker was frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities as early as December. When asked by Sky Sports News HQ on Monday if he would consider a loan move, Lambert said: Maybe. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Royals shook up their coaching staff Thursday in an attempt to jumpstart their failing offence, making Dale Sveum the hitting coach and Mike Jirschele their third base coach. Pedro Grifol, who took over as hitting coach last season, will now instruct catchers. The moves were announced after the Royals finished off a disastrous homestand that included a sweep at the hands of Houston, and before they opened a four-game series in Toronto. Sveum said the Royals havent done a good enough job this season of hitting pitches in the upper half of the strike zone. "The bottom line is weve struggled with elevation and weve swung at pitches down in the zone probably way too much," he said. "From thigh high to the top of the strike zone, were not doing enough damage." The Royals began the day last in the majors with 21 homers, putting them on pace to match the 1976 club for the fewest in franchise history for a non-strike-shortened season. Theyre also last in the American League in runs and slugging percentage. "There is not one man in the lineup thats hitting the ball well," Royals designated hitter Billy Butler said Wednesday. "Were just cold." Yost said "a different voice can make a difference," to struggling batters, but the Royals have heard plenty of voices about hitting: Sveum is Kansas Citys fifth hitting coach in lless than three seasons.dddddddddddd The Royals let go of Kevin Seitzer two years ago in the hope that somebody else would help the club generate more power. Seitzer was eventually hired by the Blue Jays, who currently lead the majors with 76 homers -- more than Kansas City is on pace for all season. Jack Maloof and Andre David were hired before last season, but they only made it a couple of months before they were reassigned within the franchise. It was at that point that the Royals hired Grifol and Hall of Famer George Brett on an interim basis. The Royals showed signs of life once that duo was in charge, slowly climbing into playoff contention. Grifol was given the job on a full-time basis after Brett stepped down in July, but lasted less than a year in the role. "Hes the one that pulled us out of our trouble last year," Yost said of Grifol Thursday. "A year later, we find ourselves in the exact same spot." Sveum, a former Brewers and Cubs manager, had been serving as the Royals third base coach. But he also has plenty of experience as a hitting coach, helping Milwaukee finish in the top three of the National League in homers in each of his three seasons. "Hes got experience, he studies hitting," Yost said. "Hes got a lot of knowledge. He helped Prince Fielder get, in my opinion, to the next level as an offensive performer." Custom Tampa Bay Rays Jerseys . -- DeMarcus Cousins had 29 points, nine rebounds and six steals to lead the Sacramento Kings to their third straight preseason win, a 107-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night.MEMPHIS - Rudy Gay has played 244 games in Memphiss FedExForum, perhaps none as vindicating as this one. Coming off the worst shooting night of his career - one of the worst in league history - in a devastating loss on Monday, the Raptors forward bounced back at an opportune time for both himself and his team. For the first time since the three-team trade that sent Gay from the Grizzlies, the only NBA team he had ever known, to Toronto last winter, the 27-year-old returned to Memphis on Wednesday and left with a convincing victory that the Raptors sorely needed. "I dont think it was for me as much as we needed it anyway," Gay said, deflecting attention off himself moments after he scored 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting in Torontos 103-87 upset win over the reigning Western Conference finalists in Memphis. "For me personally, it was a little emotional, but other than that, especially coming off the Houston loss, we needed this game." After shooting an abysmal 11-for-37 from the field in the double-overtime loss to the Rockets, Gay eased into his return. He began the game with a concerted effort to get his teammates involved, but when he failed to convert on any of his first four field goal attempts, the look on faces around the arena spoke louder than words. Here we go again, everyone thought. But then Gay did what he does best. He kept shooting. This time he got into a rhythm and when hes locked in, as Grizzlies fans remember, he becomes an exceptionally dangerous scorer. "After last game, I just wanted to get my teammates involved first, move the ball around, get the offence moving and I picked my spots where I wanted to be aggressive," he said. "I missed shots," he acknowledged of the slow start. "Ive missed shots before, last game I missed a lot of shots, so its nothing. Im one of those guys that, if I go out there and miss two, Im going to make sure I make the third." He missed fou,r but then he made the next one and then the shot after that. In fact, he hit four straight, three of them from beyond the arc and just like that, the Raptors were firing on all cylinders. They led by as many as 15 in the first half, 11 at the break. The Raptors offence that looked so terrible in Houston followed Gays lead, as you would imagine. As he looked to distribute, so did DeMar DeRozan. Both players had four assists and Kyle Lowry added six in his best game of the season. As a team, Toronto had 11 assists in 24 minutes, one more than they accumulated in 58 minutes two nights prior. "Its a lot easier because we drew so much attention," said DeRozan, who had 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. It was the first of nine games this season where both he and Gay were effective at the same time. "One of us has to sacrifice. If we draw two or three guys, we have to kick it to the next man and hell create for the next player. Thats how we have to play. Once we play like that consistently, its definitely going to be hard to guard us." The start of the third quarter brought on another here we go again moment. The Grizzlies, as good teams do, made their run led by the explosive Mike Conley, who scored 12 of his game-high 29 points in the period. With 15 minutes left to play, the home team had tied it up at 70. We have seen this narrrative before and we know how it plays out, generally.dddddddddddd Perhaps the Raptors have learned something from heartbreaking collapses of the past. Perhaps it was an outlier. But they refused to back down from the Grizzlies, a quality and always-intimidating opponent. They ended the third quarter strong and, by the time the fourth rolled along, the game belonged to Gay. It was his night regardless of whether or not his humility would allow him to accept it. "Thats where you find that extra motivation," DeRozan said, mindful of what this game represented for his teammate. "Every game you look for it somewhere, somehow and tonight we played a lot for him. We knew how much he wanted to come back here and win." The reception Gay received as he was introduced to the fans before tip-off was primarily a positive one, but by the time the game was out of reach for the home team, they certainly made him feel like an opponent. As Gay drilled a 19-footer midway through the fourth, giving his team their largest lead of the evening at 19, boos rained down from the stands. "Thats when I realized I dont play here anymore," he joked. What does this game mean in the larger scheme of things? No one knows. The Raptors, at least for now, hope to be a winning team and to do that theyll need to steal games like this. Sure, you can excuse them for cowering to superior teams - Miami, Indiana, Houston - but at some point you need to win one youre not supposed to. They did that on Wednesday and theyll need to do more of it to reach their ultimate goal. "It was a great night for our team," said Lowry, who finished with 21 points. "The effort we showed tonight is how we should play every night." Getting to the line The Raptors set the tone early in the game, aggressively attacking the rim and earning the benefit of the doubt from the officials the rest of the night. "This is a very physical team and we had to be the aggressor," said Lowry, another former Grizzly. "Their physicality can take anybody out of the game, so our goal tonight was to be really aggressive and try to get to the basket and get to the free throw line as much as we could." Toronto outscored the Grizzlies 33-11 at the line, outshooting them 39-17 from the stripe. Quiet, consistent production from Ross Last season, very little of what rookie Terrence Ross did was quiet. He would exchange several ineffective minutes on the floor - on both ends - for one highlight-calibre dunk that would almost mask the inconsistency that held him back as a player. For the second straight game, Ross has been quietly useful. Hes been efficient offensively, shooting three-of-five, where he may be starting to understand that sometimes less is more and, most importantly, hes been a standout on defence. "Hes very poised out there," Dwane Casey said of Ross, who contributed eight points in 20 minutes off the bench. "Hes growing as a player and thats what this year is about for him." Up next After playing six of their first nine games on the road to begin the season, the Raptors happily return home for six of their next seven. Theyll host the Chicago Bulls at the Air Canada Centre Friday evening, a game you can catch live on TSN 1050 Radio beginning at 7:00 pm et. GLASGOW -- Sultana Frizell didnt get a chance to march in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. But shell be front and centre when the event wraps up tonight. The hammer thrower was named Canadas flagbearer for the closing ceremony after defending her gold medal from four years ago in impressive fashion. Frizell -- who set a new Commonwealth record in the event on three separate occasions in Glasgow -- did not participate in opening ceremony on July 23 because she was still training at a camp in Portugal. The 29-year-old from Perth, Ont., said she was both surprised and honoured to be asked to carry the Maple Leaf into Hampden Park. "Last night everyone took me into a back room and they were like Sultana, weve got something to tell you. And I was like Is somebody dead?" the bubbly Frizell joked. "It was never really in my head. I see the people carrying the flag and Im like Hey thats really cool and it would be really nice to do it someday. "Its definitely a nice cherry on top." Frizell, who trains in Kamloops, B.C., said carrying the flag will also be special for her parents. "Its going to be really nice for my family back home to see because theyre not able to travel anymore," she said. "My mom and my dad are quite ill. This will be nice for them to see me on TV. Its going to be great." Frizell was just one of a number of Canadas 265 athletes in the running for flagbearer on a team that was cemented in third place in the overall medal standings behind England and Australia heading into the final day of competition. "Not only was it an impressive performance, Sultana also displayed exceptional character on and off the field," said Canadian chef de mission Chantal Petitclerc in a release. "Her great attitude and leadership certainly contributed to the success of the entire athletics team here in Glasgow." Frizell threw 71.69 metres to claim gold in the hammer throw, but was disappointed she didnt come closer to the Canadian record of 75.73 she threw earlier this season. With the start of NFL training camp later this month, Payton said he was planning to spend a week relaxing at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. One thing led to another, and Payton ended up agreeing to help Palmer, who gave his regular PGA Tour caddie the week off. "Its pretty cool to hear the mindset of one of the great coaches in the game, Super Bowl winning coach," Palmer said. After two days of participating in practice rounds and pro-am events, Payton said Wednesday he realized "this isnt a vacation." Payton and Palmer are good friends who met in Dallas. They see each other when Palmer plays in the Zurich Classic in Louisiana and theyve played an occasional round together during the summers. While Payton said he isnt good at playing golf, he said hes comfortable with figuring out yardage at the Greenbrier Classic, which starts Thursday. Payton compares being a caddie to visualizing an NFL game through the eyes of a quarterback and said hes taking the opportunity seriously. "I know what game week feels like for me in the faall, and I know what it will feel like for him and what it does feel like for all these golfers," Payton said.dddddddddddd"Just to be invisible as a caddie and do your job and be supportive, those are the things that I look at as being important for me this week." To which Palmer added jokingly: "Just shut up and keep up. Thats it." Palmer, who has four top 10 finishes this season, said other caddies had warm reactions to Payton. While the best work in golf is done in a quiet environment while footballs best work is amid a stadium full of screaming fans, the discipline required to succeed is the same, Payton said. "(Theres) a lot of tedious work that goes for the most part unnoticed," Payton said. "And its pretty interesting to be around this venue and just see how these guys get around the course and whats going through their mind." Payton had plenty of time to play golf during his one-year suspension as part of the NFLs bounty investigation. He was reinstated in January. The Saints went 7-9 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in four years. "I know our players are looking forward to getting back," Payton said. Tim Hortons field for Hamilton

The Miami Heat will try to remain undefeated in this postseason Thursday night when they host the Brooklyn Nets for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Heat, the two-time defending NBA champion, swept the Charlotte Bobcats in round one, then knocked off the Nets, who went 4-0 against Miami during the regular season, 107-86, Tuesday. Dating back to Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, the Heat have won seven straight playoff games, which is one shy of tying the franchise record, which has been done twice. The Heat led by three points at the half Tuesday, but pulled away in the third quarter after outscoring the Nets 33-23 and shooting 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the floor. They took a 13-point advantage into the fourth, where Miami cruised to victory. LeBron James had 22 points and five rebounds, followed by Chris Bosh, who posted 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ray Allen knocked down four 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 19 points for the Heat. Dwyane Wade had 14 points and Mario Chalmers added 12. The Heat shot 56.8 percent from the floor and only committed 10 turnovers. Their precision was impressive considering Miami hadnt played since last Monday after their sweep of the Bobcats. "I was concerned just a little bit about our rhythm and our flow because we were off eight days as far as playing a game," James said after practice on Wednesday. "When we got there, it was like we never missed a beat. Thats a great sign for us." Joe Johnson and Deron Williams netted 17 points apiece to lead the Nets, while Kevin Garnett went scoreless for the first time in his playoff career. "We need to attack them more than we did tonight," Garnett said. Marcus Thornton was the only other Brooklyn player in double figures with 11 for the second unit. The Nets advanced to the East semis after barely hanging on to beat the Toronto Raptors in a Game 7 at Air Canada Centre when Paul Pierce blocked Kyle Lowrys floater right before the buzzer. With the season sweep fresh in their minds, the Nets felt some degree of confidence and played with the Heat for the first half. Miami extended its halftime advantage with a 15-2 run during the middle stages of the third quarter. Bosh put in the first seven points of the surge, which included a triple and a three-point play from the Miami center, and Chalmers capped it with a layup for a 70-54 spread. The Heat built a margin as high 23 points down the stretch. "We know a lot of the things we did wrong defensively," Williams said after practice on Wednesday. "We made a lot of mistakes in our defensive gameplan. The focus going forward is keeping them out of the lane, keeping them from getting so many layups, so many easy baskets. When they do that, they get a lot of confidence and then they start hitting shots from everywhere." This is the third meeting between the two in the postseason and Miami has won the first two series. Game 3 of the series will be Saturday night when the action shifts to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Aaron Colvin Jersey . 3 seed Phillip Kohlschreiber from Germany. Particularly when speaking in the stadium of Tuesdays opponent: Manchester City. "Maybe they dont fear us as before," Pique said on Monday, "because in the last two years we didnt win the Champions League.Congratulations to the Calgary Stampeders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats - now the champions of the West and East and to meet Nov. 30 to find the winner of the 102nd Grey Cup from Vancouver, B.C. You know that Calgary will be the prohibitive favorite and they should be. With 15 regular-season wins and a dominate win over the Edmonton Eskimos, much of the discussion this week will be how can Hamilton even keep it close? I will be surprised if it isnt close. Going into the East finals the Montreal Alouettes were very confident; almost too much so. Often, when you go into a game with bravado and make the statements that Montreal did, the opponent takes it personal and I sense that the Ticats did just that. Mistake by Montreal. The obvious star for the game was Brandon Banks and the smallest player in the game played the biggest role. Jeff Rienbolt, the Ticat special teams coach, also saw his group perform extremely well. It was an example of using your bye week effectively to put in new blocking patterns in the return game and see them work to perfection. The secondary of Hamilton also played well - not just the interceptions but the almost elimination of big plays. Montreal had three tall big-time sprinters at receivers and only once did I see a big play produced of more than 25 yards. Johnathan Crompton did not test the deep ball often but when he did the Ticats covered well. Delvin Breaux in particular was significantly noticeable at cornerback. So much of the success in the playoffs is avoiding mistakes and making plays happen. The two unnecessary roughness penalties on Duron Carter really effected the game. Tim Hortons field for Hamilton has been a major success in so many ways. Now 7-0 in that stadiium it has also become an identity location for the Ticats.ddddddddddddWhen you think of almost the last two years from the University Guelph and Grey Cup representative in 2013 and half a season at McMaster and Grey Cup representative again in 2014, it kind of makes you optimistic for 2015 and all nine games in Tim Hortons Field. Hamilton started the season 1-6, finished the season 9-9 and are now back in the Grey Cup. Well done. For Calgary, the best team won and beat the same team four times. To have a 29-4 lead at half time says your ready to go. Bo Levi Mitchells deep ball was never better and the strategy to go for the kill shot early and often worked out remarkably well. So much emphasis on John Cornish was used for Stampeders advantage early and often. For Edmonton they actually had an excellent year. You take away the four Calgary losses and Edmonton almost dominated everybody and boy did they find a quarterback. I have never played on a broken bone but Mike Rielly did for as long as he could. If he was healthy would it have made a difference in winning. I dont think so, Calgary was ready no matter health or not. An interesting competition will be the Rich Stubler defence against the Kent Austin offence. The Dave Dickenson offence against the Orolndo Stinehouer defence. And can Hamilton control a great running game in John Cornish. I remember what Kory Sheets did in last years Grey Cup and it cant repeat for Hamilton in this years Grey Cup. And I remember what Torontos defence did to the Stampeders offence in the Grey Cup the year before Regina and that cant happen again ether. Hamilton and Calgary, let the week of speculation begin and a new Grey Cup winner be crowned. The partnership includes Omega being the official timekeeper and the sponsor of the tours award for rookie of the year. It already is the title sponsor of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, and it recently signed a personal endorsement deal with English teenager Charley Hull.We get big companies like Omega involved, thats a step forward, Davies said. Because other multinational companies want to be involved with other multinational companies, so hopefully that will draw in some more big support, especially for the LET — more television for us. I know thats one of the things our chief executive is trying to do, and if we get much more live TV, I think everything gets elevated. In recent years, Omega struck up a partnership with the PGA of America and the Ryder Cup (when it is played in America). It is title sponsor for two European Tour events (Switzerland and Dubai) and the finale on the LET.Hull is the youngest in an Omega stable that includes Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman, along with Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis.Hull, a star for Europe in its first Solheim Cup victory in America last year, narrowly missed out on her full LPGA Tour card last week and received only conditional status. The 18-year-old is on the cusp of winning the LET money title going into Dubai. It is important to the brand that we show our appreciation of golf as a while, and we are happy to bring greater attention to the professional women golfers who are taking the game to a new, exciting level, Omega President Stephen Urquhart said.___BACK TO DUBAI: Tiger Woods never got around to finishing that first golf course design project in Dubai. Dubai is fast becoming one of the most influential golfing destinations in the world, both for the professional game and for amateurs looking to enjoy the great weather, great courses and amazing lifestyle.Site preparation work already is underway, and the course is to open by the end of 2017.The first project for Tiger Woods Design was Al Ruwaya Golf Course in Dubai, a $1 billion project that was to include sheik-style palaces and a boutique hotel. The project was scuttled nearly four years ago when the economy crashed. His first golf course since the design company was launched in 2006 is to open this month in Mexico.___DALY DOINGS: John Daly hasnt had a week like this in some time. Not only did he win, he got engaged.Daly announced on Twitter last week that he popped the question to Anna Cladakis, whom he has been with for the last six years. Tonite I asked my best friend, soul mate & no one better to marry me & she said yes! Daly tweeted. Then, he shot a 63 in the second round of the Beko Classic in Turkey and went on to his first victory in 10 years. The tournament is not attached to any tour, and thus offered no ranking points. Daly earned $8,000 for the victory. It will be the fifth marriage for Daly, who is eligible for the Champions Tour in April 2016.___STRANGE SEASON: The lost year for Tiger Woods because of back issues can be illustrated by three results from the Hero World Challenge.Whhile he tied for last place in the 18-man field, it was Woods highest finish in the nine tournaments he entered in 2014.dddddddddddd The tie for 17th topped his previous best, which was a tie for 25 in the World Golf Championship at Doral.Woods earned $102,500, his biggest paycheque of the year (on the golf course). In the seven PGA Tour events he entered, Woods made $108,275.He was awarded 3.16 points toward the world ranking, his second-highest points from any tournament this year. Woods received 3.58 points from Doral. For the year, Woods received 9.729 points, the fewest of any player from the top 200 in the world.___ANOTHER AWARD: Europeans had such a banner year in the big events that their winning Ryder Cup team — normally the story of the year in golf — finished third in media voting for the Golf Writers Trophy. The British-based Association of Golf Writers voted Rory McIlroy as the winner for the second time in three years. McIlroy was the overwhelming choice after winning two majors (the British Open and PGA Championship), a World Golf Championship and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The Golf Writers Trophy is awarded to the European who has made the most outstanding contribution to the sport.Martin Kaymer was runner-up after his wire-to-wire, eight-shot victory in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, along with his victory in The Players Championship. The Ryder Cup team, which had an easy time beating the United States at Gleneagles, finished third.___BUBBA FLOWER BED: This might have been the first time Bubba Watson had a flower bed named after him.The weekend before the Hero World Challenge, someone sent the two-time Masters champion a photo from the seventh hole at Isleworth. One of the residents gave Watson the ultimate tribute by fashioning flowers to spell BUBBA on the right side of the fairway.Watson, a member at Isleworth, said he plays in the money games with the neighbour and hes pulling for a guy who lives here.He didnt ask me. He did it just for this week, Watson said. Somebody sent me a picture on Saturday or Sunday and said, Hey, look at the flower bed. Thats the only time I knew about it. I thought it was funny. It would be like you doing something for your buddy or someone you like. I think he likes me.___DIVOTS: Patrick Reed is in alternate for the second straight week. After filling in for Jim Furyk at the Hero World Challenge, Reed is replacing Chris Kirk at the Franklin-Templeton Shootout. Reed, who earned $212,500 last week at Isleworth, will be partners with Brandt Snedeker. ... Chris Kirk had a familiar face in his pro-am last week at the Hero World Challenge — his regular caddie. Bill Harke, who returns to the bag next month in Kapalua, was asked to play in the pro-am at Isleworth by Harry You, for whom Harke once caddied at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Just their luck, they drew Kirk as their pro.___STAT OF THE WEEK: Rory McIlroy (25), Jason Day (27), Jordan Spieth (21) and Rickie Fowler (25) are all among the top 10 in the world ranking.___FINAL WORD: I hadnt played in four months. To come out here and not play in any kind of pain is great progress, and to be able to hit the ball as hard as I want really without flinching. — Tiger Woods after the fourth round of the Hero World Challenge. It was his first tournament in four months after taking time off to strengthen the muscle structure in his back.___FINAL WORD IN RETROSPECT: The back is great. I had no issues at all. No twinges, no nothing. It felt fantastic. Thats one of the reasons why I let go on those tee shots. I hit it pretty hard out there. — Tiger Woods after the first round of the Quicken Loans National. what had been a close game

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cody Asche took one look at the starting lineup and felt his confidence grow. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg challenged him, and that was enough. Asche hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game and then started the decisive rally with a double to open the 10th as Philadelphia rallied to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Friday night. "He saw something in me that made him want to put me in," Asche said. "I was confident just by the fact I was in there." Chase Utley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th and Ryan Howard followed with a sacrifice fly against Javier Lopez, snapping the Phillies three-game losing streak. Sandberg gave Andres Blanco the day off and went with Asche against Madison Bumgarner. "If you want a chance to become a regular player, you have to face lefties," Sandberg said. Asche connected against Jeremy Affeldt, who allowed his first home run this season, and doubled off Santiago Casilla (1-3) to set the stage for the winning rally. Ken Giles (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Jonathan Papelbon worked the 10th for his 28th save in 31 chances. Bumgarner threw seven strong innings for his first quality start at home since June 10, a span of seven games. He allowed one run and four hits, striking out nine without a walk. "It was nice to pitch a good game at home," Bumgarner said. "Its been forever." Cole Hamels also delivered a quality start for Philadelphia, giving up three runs and nine hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Pablo Sandoval had three hits, but the Giants lost their sixth in seven games. Bumgarner retired the first 10 hitters he faced, five on strikeouts, before allowing back-to-back hits by Jimmy Rollins and Utley. Hamels let the leadoff hitter reach base in five innings and had baserunners every inning. He was able to avoid trouble with the exception of the fourth. Buster Posey led off with a single and Sandoval hit a ground-rule double ahead of Michael Morses first home run in August, a three-run drive into the left-field seats. Marlon Byrd countered with his 23rd homer leading off the fifth. TRAINERS ROOM Phillies: OF John Mayberry Jr. continues to deal with inflammation in his left wrist. His recovery has been interrupted by minor setbacks following workouts. Giants: 1B Brandon Belt will get another opinion on his concussion when the Giants visit Chicago next week. Belt will see concussion specialist Michael Collins in Pittsburgh. UP NEXT Phillies: RHP Kyle Kendrick (5-11, 4.88 ERA) takes the mound Saturday afternoon. He is 1-3 in his past six starts and has an ERA of 6.98 over his last seven. Giants: RHP Tim Hudson (8-9, 2.81) pitches Saturday. The Giants have lost seven of his last 10 starts. Hudson has started 30 games against the Phillies and is 11-10 with a 3.60 ERA against them. BYRD IS THE WORD Giants third base coach Tim Flannery sent Sandoval home with two outs in the eighth on Joe Paniks single to right. Byrds throw to Carlos Ruiz was there in plenty of time, keeping the game tied. "Defence always comes first," Byrd said. "Im not always going to hit, and I take pride in my defence." Byrd also ran down Morses 400-foot fly in the second to the roomy area of the ballpark known as Triples Alley. COOL LIKE CARLTON Hamels had his streak of pitching at least seven innings and allowing no more than one earned run stopped at five games, one shy of matching the franchise record. Steve Carlton was the last Phillies pitcher to do it, in 1972. Grover Cleveland Alexander (1916) and Elmer Jacobs (1918) also accomplished the feat. Xavier Sua-Filo Titans Jersey . The 155th edition of the Plate for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds, the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America, will be televised live on TSN in HD (High Definition) in a special presentation from 4:30 – 6:00 pm ET. Post time is 5:38 pm.Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Currently mired in one of the longest losing streaks of the Barry Hinson era, the Southern Illinois Salukis will try to right the ship when they tangle with the 13th-ranked Wichita State Shockers in a Missouri Valley Conference tussle on Wednesday night. Southern Illinois has lost its last six games to fall to 7-10 overall and 0-4 in conference. The Salukis, who lost at home to Indiana State (59-56) last Saturday, are 2-5 in true road games this season, and they will be seeking their first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 17, 2011 when they topped Butler in Indianapolis. Wichita State went 10-2 during the non-conference portion of its schedule, and has bounced back from a 60-54 loss to George Washington in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii on Christmas Day to win each of its first four MVC bouts. The Shockers, who are a perfect 8-0 at home this season, claimed a 67-53 decision at Loyola-Chicago this past Sunday. SIU won 19-of-22 games between the schools from 1999-2009. Since that time however, the Shockers have won eight of the last 10 meetings. The last time SIU won at Charles Koch Arena was on Feb. 8, 2011. Southern Illinois has really struggled during its current six-game losing streak, and while it pretty much matched Indiana States effort in the recent outing, coach Hinsons club still came out on the losing side. Bola Olaniyan scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead SIU, while Anthony Beane tallied 11 points, Jordan Carolina 10, and Sean OBrien helped the Salukis to a 40-27 rebounding advantage by pulling down 10 boards. Southern Illinois shot 40.7 percent from the field, but only 25 percent from 3-point range, while the Sycamores nailed eight ttreys as part of their 43.dddddddddddd5 percent overall shooting performance. Beane (16.5 ppg) is the lone double-digit scorer for the Salukis this season, but he has hit just 21-of-80 (.263) from the field and 3-of-30 (.100) from 3- point range during the teams current slide. As a team, SIU has fumbled the ball away 83 times while logging only 45 assists, and it is shooting just 38 percent from the floor, and only 22 percent from beyond the arc over the last six games. For the season, the team is scoring 60.5 ppg while permitting only 60.2 ppg. Despite its troubles, Southern Illinois is in the black with regard to both rebounding (+2.4) and turnover (+0.5) margin. The Shockers used a sizzling 71.4 percent shooting effort in the second half to blow open what had been a close game at Loyola-Chicago over the weekend. Wichita State wound up hitting 54.3 percent of its field goal attempts on the day, while the Ramblers found the bottom of the net on only 37 percent of theirs, despite the fact that they drained 10-of-18 3-point tries. Tekele Cotton was high man for the Shockers with 16 points, while Ron Baker tacked on 15 and Fred VanVleet logged a double-double consisting of 14 points and 10 assists. Baker is netting 16.5 ppg to pace four Wichita State players in double figures, the team putting up 72.4 ppg in knocking down 45.1 percent of its total shots, which includes a 37.4 percent showing from beyond the arc. Foes are nearly as successful from distance (.372), but they commit roughly 14 turnovers per outing, while coming up nearly six rebounds shy of the Shockers on average. All of that of course means opponents are scoring just 58.7 ppg against what is a formidable Wichita State squad all the way around. PHILADELPHIA -- Rajon Rondo is starting to feel like his old self -- and the Boston Celtics are starting to win again. Rondo had eight points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in his eighth game back from a serious knee injury, and Jeff Green scored 17 of his 36 points in the third quarter in the Celtics 114-108 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. "Its only a matter of time before we got on the same page," Green said about Rondo. "He puts me in my spots, gets it to me in the open floor. He sees the floor very well. Hes helping me get into a good rhythm. I have to continue to make sure I get open for him." Jared Sullinger had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Boston. The Celtics improved to 17-33, winning their second straight game after losing 19 of 22. Rondo had 19 points and 10 assists in Bostons win over Orlando on Sunday. "Im getting back to my old self," Rondo said. "Im not there yet but Ill take the progress." Brandon Bass had 18 points for the Celtics, 2-6 since Rondos return. Thaddeus Young had 20 points, and Tony Wroten added 18 for Philadelphia. The 76ers (15-35) have lost four straight and 14 of their last 17 games. They also have lost six in a row at home for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Spencer Hawes added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Philadelphia and Lavoy Allen had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sixers coach Brett Brown noticed the difference in the Celtics with an effective Rondo. "Hes their compass," Brown said. "Hes a great point guard and a leader." Green scored 13 straight points during a 2-minute stretch in the third quarter, capped by a 3-pointer that gave the Celtics their biggest lead to that point, 83-71 with 3:44 left. Boston coach Brad Stevens credited Rondo for helping Green succeed. "He made a lot of shots and Rondo found him a couple of times early," Stevens said. "His job is simplified with Rajon out there. He pushed the tempo better than Ive seen him in the first eight games. He got us a lot of good looks. His greatest strength is he makes everyone else better and thats really shown true the last two games." Said Rondo: "Everybody needs easy buckets, especially a guy (Green) whos that talented and athletic. All he needs to do is see it go through a couple of times, get to the free-throw line. He gets hot quick." Wroten made a 58-footer at the buzzer to cut it to 88-82 entering the fourth. Philadelphia got as close as three points in the final quarter on Wrotens two free throws with 8:35 left but never got closer. The Sixers had a chance to get it to two points, but Evan Turner missed a baseline jumper with 1:13 left, and Sullinger converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession off an assist from Rondo with 59.4 seconds left to give Boston a 112-105 advantage. "He made a ton of good decisions and some huge plays late," Stevens said about Rondo. The Boston point guard, who is still getting into game shape, also got some help from his teammates. After going down at one point, Bass resuscitated a winded Rondo. "Nothing was wrong," Rondo said. "I was winded. He brought me back to life a little bit. Those guys pick me up. Whoever hits the floor helps each other up. Were a team and thats what they did on that particular play." The Sixers havent won since last Wednesdays buzzer-beating 95-94 win at Boston. Notes: Philadelphia guard Michael Carter-Williams was selected the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for January. One thing was clear to him, however. "This team needs better from me," Young said. Young got hit hard and often in an uncharacteristically poor outing, and the Mariners missed a chance to move up in the AL playoff race, tagged for five home runs Saturday night in a 10-1 loss to the Astros. The Mariners stayed one game behind AL wild-card leader Oakland and a half-game in back of Kansas City for the second slot. The As and Royals both lost earlier in the day. "I didnt pitch as well as Im capable of," Young said. "Im disappointed. Just felt good going in, dont know what happened. Just didnt make good pitches." Chris Carter and Alex Presley hit two-run homers and Matt Dominguez and Carlos Corporan added back-to-back solo shots. Jake Marisnick had a three-run homer in the seventh inning as the Astros snapped a four-game skid. "They swung the bat well," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "They pretty much decided it real early." The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but managed to come out empty-handed, with Austin Jackson grounding into a double play to end the inning. "We pretty much had one shot and couldnt capitalize with it," McClendon said. Young (12-9) gave up seven runs and eight hits in three-plus innings. He also threw two wild pitches. "For the most part I feel like Ive given the team a chance," Young said. "A couple of starts this month I havent, but Ill bounce back." Dallas Keuchel (12-9) pitched eight strong innings, striking out eighth. He also reached 200 innings in a season for the first time in his career. Carter and Presley homered one batter apart in the first inning. Dominguez and Corporan connected off Young on consecutive pitches in the fourth. It was Carters 37th home run of the season, a career high. Nelson Cruz leads the majors with 39. Dexter Fowler doubled and scored two runs for the Astros. Houstonn tied a season high for homers previously achieved April 6 against the Angels.dddddddddddd Jose Altuve got two hits, giving 218 this season. He tied Rod Carew for most by a second baseman since 1937. Carew reached the feat in 1974 with Minnesota. Charlie Gehringer had 227 with Detroit in 1936. Robinson Cano hit an RBI single for Seattle run in the third. Marisnick homered off Erasmo Ramirez, who pitched four innings in relief. The best thing for Young and the Mariners to do is put this game behind them, third baseman Kyle Seager said. "You are at this point of the year, you are in single-digit games left, and we obviously know where we stand," Seager said. "Every game is magnified right now." EYES ON THE RACE With his team in a tight race for an AL wild-card berth, McClendon delayed his pregame media availability so he could watch the end of Detroits 3-2 win over Kansas City. "Its like I tell the players ---- its not often that you get the opportunity to be in these positions," McClendon said. "Cherish them and enjoy the journey, and this is part of it." HES A HIT The Astros honoured Altuve prior to the game for breaking the clubs record for hits in a season. Craig Biggio, who had held the club record of 210 since 1998, took part in the ceremony at Minute Maid Park, which included Altuve being presented with a giant coupon good for 211 bottles of Minute Maid orange juice. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: OF Dustin Ackley, who hit two homers in Fridays 10-5 win, sat out the game because of a bad left ankle. McClendon said he would play Sunday. Astros: RHP Josh Fields remains day-to-day with what interim manager Tom Lawless described as a strain. LHP Darin Downs, who felt discomfort in his right oblique in Fridays game, is also day to day. UP NEXT Mariners RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (14-8, 3.42 ERA), who is 6-3 over his last 10 starts, faces rookie RHP Collin McHugh (10-9, 2.66). McHugh has won his last six decisions and has allowed two runs or fewer in nine straight starts, the longest active streak in the majors. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was arrested and accused of drunk driving Thursday in Nebraska while on probation for assaulting a police officer, the second New England player to get in serious legal trouble this summer. Dennards early-morning arrest in Lincoln, Neb., where he was a college star for the Cornhuskers, came 15 days after Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder and three days after Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the club will "be looking at our procedures and auditing how we do things" with regard to character reviews. "The New England Patriots are extremely disappointed to learn of Alfonzo Dennards arrest. We take this matter very seriously and are working to get more information on the incident," the team said in a statement. Dennards arrest is his second in 15 months. He hasnt served a 30-day jail sentence for the assault outside a Lincoln bar on Apr. 21, 2012. That is scheduled to begin next March. He also was sentenced to two years of probation. Hernandez, a star tight end, was arrested on June 26 and charged with murder in the killing of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty. The Patriots cut Hernandez after he was arrested and before the charges were announced. Dennard and Hernandez both were highly-touted college prospects whose draft stock dropped because of character concerns. Seven days after being charged with assault, Dennard was drafted in the seventh round last year out of Nebraska by the Patriots. They drafted Hernandez in the fourth round in 2010 after he violated the substance abuse policy at Florida. "If this stuff is true, then Ive been duped and our whole organization has been duped," Kraft said Monday of the case involving Hernandez. The team did not respond to a request Thursday for Krafts reaction to Dennards arrest. The legal issues are bound to hover over the opening of training camp on July 25. Coach Bill Belichick rarely comments on such matters and instructs his players to do the same. Belichick has sometimes signed players who had troubles elsewhere if he felt they could help the team win, hoping his disciplined approach and leaders such as Tom Brady and Vince Wilfork and now-retired Patriots including Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel could keep them in line. Results have been mixed. Running back Corey Dillon and wide receiver Randy Moss, disgruntled on their previous teams, avoided off-field problems with the Patriots and were productive for several seasons. Chad Johnson, then known as Chad Ochocinco, caught just 15 passes in his only season with the Patriots in 2011 but caused no off-field distractions. Dennard became a starter at cornerback in the seventh game of his rookie season. The other starter, Aqib Talib, was obtained from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Nov. 1 then signed a one-year contract on March 16. He missed his first game with the Patriots while completing a four-game suspension imposed by the NFL for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances. Talib had been suspended without pay for the 2010 opener and fined one additional game check for violating the NFLs personal-conduct policy. That followed an altercation with a St. Petersburg cab driver during training camp in 2009. He also had charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Texas dropped a week before he was due to be tried for allegedly firing a gun at his sisters boyfriend. On Thursday, Dennard was pulled over while driving just before 2 a.m. and failed a field sobriety test, police said. A phone listing for Dennard couldnt be found. Police spokeswoman Katie Flood said he was taken to a detoxification centre but not jailed. He also was accused of refusing a chemical test and a driving infraction. She said a final decision on the charges likely will be made by the Lincoln City Attorneys Office before the Aug. 12 court date assigned to Dennard. Assistant city prosecutor John McQuinn said his office had not yet received the citation against Dennard from police. The Patriots first preseason game is scheduled for Aug. 9 at the Philadelphia Eagles. Terry Dougherty, Dennards lawyer in the assault case, said in April that he would ask Lancaster County District Judge Stephanie Stacy to suspend the 30-day sentence if Dennard complied with the terms of his probation over the subsequent 11 months. Stacy said then that she would consider such a motion. Its unclear whether prosecutors will move to have Dennards probation revoked. Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly didnt immediately return a message. Dennards arrest is the latest off-field incident involving a Patriots player while he was with them or before they obtained him. Among the others: -- Brandon Meriweather, a safety drafted in the first round in 2007 from Miami, fired a gun at an assailant who had shot Dolphins backup safety Willie Cooper outside the house the two players shared with another teammate, police said. Meriweather wasnt charged and police said he used the gun legally. -- Willie Andrews, a defensive back drafted in the seventh round in 2006 from Baylor, was cut by the Patriots after being arrested twice following the 2007 season. Daniel Alfredsson scored two goals, including a power-play score at 1:03 of overtime and the Red Wings earned a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. The win snapped Detroits six-game losing streak (0-4-2) and five-game home losing streak. "We were hanging in, playing some good hockey, and then all of a sudden were having some lapses where we give the other team way too many chances," Alfredsson said. "We did that some today, too, but overall we grinded." Alfredsson also had an assist and was set up for the winner by Pavel Datsyuk, who had three assists. Datsyuk threaded a cross-ice pass to Alfredsson, who rifled in a one-time slap shot from the inside edge of the left circle for his ninth goal of the season. Datsyuk drew the penalty on T.J. Brodie, who hooked Datsyuk as he tried to split the defence deep in the Calgary zone with 42 seconds left. Alfredsson also got his 700th assist earlier in the game. Detroit is without eight regulars due to injury. Joakim Andersson also scored for Detroit, defenceman Niklas Kronwall added two assists and goaltender Jonas Gustavsson made 20 saves. led 2-0 at the break after

Veteran skip Kevin Martin will have a much different lineup if he decides to return for another season on the mens curling circuit. Team second Marc Kennedy and lead Ben Hebert plan to leave Martins rink after this season to join reigning national champion Kevin Koe. Its the first major move of whats expected to be an off-season loaded with significant roster changes. As for the 47-year-old Martin, who has national, world and Olympic titles on his glowing resume, he plans to take some time after the season to consider his future plans. "I cant confirm that Im looking for a new roster," Martin told The Canadian Press on Wednesday from Napa Valley, Calif. "But I can confirm that Marc and Ben are going to curl with Kev, yeah. I havent decided if Im going to curl again at all." The timing of the news is less than ideal for Koe and his current lineup of third Pat Simmons, second Carter Rycroft and lead Nolan Thiessen, who will try to put the distraction aside as they prepare to play at the world championship in Beijing this Saturday. Koe preferred to keep his focus on the upcoming competition and respectfully declined comment. Rycroft, whose wife is pregnant, has already said hell be taking a year off from the sport after this season. Simmons and Thiessen were not available for comment and their future plans remain unclear. Hebert declined comment and a message left with Kennedy was not immediately returned. Martin said it was unfortunate that the news surfaced during the season and before the world championship. "I sure wish none of this stuff (came) out," he said. "Im not exactly sure how it did but its too bad." With the Olympic season nearly complete, several roster changes are expected as teams prepare for the next four-year cycle. Team Brad Jacobs, which won gold at the Sochi Games last month, will be one of the rinks to beat next season. Whats uncertain at this time is what ripple effect the new Koe lineup might have on teams throughout the country. The 2014-15 season isnt necessarily critical as rinks start to look ahead to the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but the sooner that players can lock in the better. Martin, Kennedy and Hebert teamed with John Morris to win Tim Hortons Brier titles in 2008 and 2009, going undefeated en route to the championship each year. They also won Olympic gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Morris left the team almost a year ago and later joined Jim Cotters B.C. rink. Morris was replaced by Dave Nedohin and the current Martin lineup has enjoyed a strong season. Martin wasnt surprised at the pending departure of two of his teammates since they want to position themselves for the next Olympic cycle. "Having teams change and personnel change, thats just part of sport," he said. "Thats not unusual I dont think. Its just unfortunate that any of these changes -- and there are a lot of changes that are going to happen this year -- happen before the end of the (season). That should definitely happen in May." Martin added the moves make "perfect sense" for Kennedy and Hebert. The veteran skip expects to decide on his own future plans by the end of June. There is still one major event left on the curling calendar -- the April 15-20 season-ending Grand Slam Players Championships in Summerside, P.E.I. That competition was already shaping up to be an emotional one with Alison Kreviazuks announcement this week that it will be her last competition with Team Rachel Homan. The longtime second has decided to move to Sweden to be with her boyfriend. Joanne Courtney of Val Sweetings rink will join Homan, lead Lisa Weagle and third Emma Miskew next season. Homan is the reigning national champion and won silver at the world championship last weekend. Nick Nelson Jersey . -- Arkansas didnt need a spectacular dunk to beat No. P.J. Hall Jersey . We were ready to go from the beginning. On opening day at Triple-A Buffalo, the Bisons rotation was made up of Marcus Stroman, lefty Sean Nolin, Kyle Drabek, veteran southpaw Ricky Romero and journeyman right hander Liam Hendriks. Of those five today, only Nolin is still with the "Herd" and he missed a chunk of the season with an injury. Stroman is up with the Blue Jays as a key member of the starting rotation. Drabek was just called up this past weekend to be part of the Jays bullpen after the organization decided he was better suited to relief pitching. Romero is done for the season with a knee injury and Hendriks was part of the trade with the Kansas City Royals that brought Danny Valencia to the Blue Jays. So the Bisons rotation for the final two weeks of International Leage season looks distinctly different and appears to offer the Blue Jays a lot more upside. Nolin is still pitching well. Lefty Daniel Norris has been brilliant in his first two Triple-A starts, striking out a total of 23 batters. Raul Valdes is a 36-year-old southpaw, adding a bit of veteran stability. Then, you have a pair of young right handers whove been more than holding their own in Scott Copeland and Kendall Graveman. Graveman is the one who really caught my eye. On Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies-affiliate Lehigh Valley Pigs, he got a no-decision while pitching seven shutout innings. He struck out four and walked none. The 23-year-old right-hander out of Alexander City, Alabama has had a meteoric rise through the Blue Jays organization, especially considering he was just an eighth-round draft pick in 2013. Graveman, or maybe we should start calling him "the Undertaker," has made four different stops throughout the Blue Jays system this season. He started at Low-A Lansing, then moved up to Dunedin in the High-A Florida State League, where he spent the bulk of this season. Then, it was on to Double-A New Hampshire and finally Buffalo. Youvre got to be pretty impressive to move up that fast. In total, Graveman has pitched 155 innings this season. He has built a 12-6 record with a sparkling 1.68 ERA. Opponents have only managed to hit .223 off of him and he has surrendered only two home runs in total. The Blue Jays playoff hopes are looking iffy at best right now with just 37 games to play, but the pitching future looks encouraging, especially with the likes of Stroman, Sanchez, Hutchison, Norris, Nolin and now maybe Graveman. This may be the best group of young arms, this side of the New York Mets. --- All this talk of pitching brings me to a great bit of research by Woody Paige of the Denver Post. Going back over the archives, Paige discovered that the Rockies had drafted 569 pitchers (414 right-handers) over their 22-year history. Of those numbers, the only arms that had made any significant impact with Colorado were Canadian lefty Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, Jason Jennings and Jamey Wright. Is it any wonder then, that Colorado has the worst record in the National League and second-worst in the Majors, just a game ahead of Texas? --- The Detroit Tigers have been stumbling around since June 1, compiling a meagre record of 35-34. They are sitting a half-game back of Seattle for that second Wild Card slot in the American. But one reason not to count Detroit out is that hey have 11 of their remaining games left against the Central cellar-dwellers, the Minnesota twins, and they close out the season at home against with seven-straight games against the Chicago White Sox (three) and the Twins (four). That faith is finally being rewarded. Santanas leadoff homer in the fourth inning lifted Cleveland to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night and continued a hot June for a hitter who struggled for the first two months. "It was inevitable," Francona said. "Hes too good a hitter." The win, which was also sparked by Asdrubal Cabreras two-run homer in the first, moved the Indians (36-35) over the .500 mark. Although Santana is hitting .191 for the season, hes batting .333 (13 for 39) with three homers and nine RBIs in June. "The good thing is, its not just singles, hes going to hit home runs and get extra base hits," Francona said. "We survived to a point with him really being cold and as hes getting hot its going to help our offence." Both home runs came off Jered Weaver (7-6), who lost for the first time in 10 career starts at Progressive Field. Weaver was 6-0 and allowed 11 earned runs in 60 1-3 innings in nine starts at the Indians ballpark going into the game. The Indians managed to win despite having a thin bullpen, forcing starter Trevor Bauer (2-3) to throw 119 pitches -- a season high for Cleveland -- in 6 2-3 innings. With closer Cody Allen and setup man Bryan Shaw both unavailable after pitching the last three days, Carlos Carrasco worked 2 1-3 innings for his first career save. "Carlos pitched really well, that was a huge lift for us," Francona said. "The way he was pitching I didnt want to take him out, and there was no reason to take him out." Indians left fielder Michael Brantley left the game in the fifth for precautionary reasons after receiving a blow to the head and neck area while trying to break up a double play in the third. "He banged the side of his head on that slide," Francona said. "He passed all the concussion tests, which is good. His neck is a little stiff. Well see how he is when he comes in (Tuesday)." The Angels have lost four of five since winning five straight. Weaver allowed four runs in six innings. The right-handers 1.64 ERA going into Monday was the lowest in ballpark history with a minimum of 50 innings pitched, acccording to STATS LLC.dddddddddddd. Weaver had allowed three earned runs in 43 innings over his last six starts in Cleveland before losing Monday. "I know that Ive thrown well in this park but I didnt know that it was that good," he said. "Nothing else to say, just cant stay away from the homer." Bauer, who pitched around trouble all game, allowed three runs for his first win since May 20 and wasnt bothered by his high pitch count. "I can go 130, 150 or 200," he said. "I did that in college. Im used to throwing." Carrasco, who was moved to the bullpen last month after pitching poorly as a starter, struck out Howie Kendrick to end the seventh and worked around a walk and a single in the eighth. He retired Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to start the ninth and struck out Josh Hamilton on three pitches to end the game. "I want to help the team whether its starting or in the bullpen," Carrasco said. "Right now the bullpen is where I am." Cabreras homer gave Cleveland the lead, but Chris Iannetta tied the game with a two-run double in the second. After the Indians went ahead again on Brantleys RBI single in the third, John McDonalds sacrifice fly in the fourth tied the game. Santana homered deep into the seats in right field on a 2-2 pitch. The switch-hitter is 10 for 19 with two homers lifetime against Weaver. Cabreras drive cleared the 19-foot wall in left field. DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings got a break, getting credit for a goal in perhaps one of the most bizarre ways in NHL history. Niklas Kronwalls shot was deflected and bounced off the protective net out of play, caromed back over the glass, and struck goalie Jonathan Quicks back to tie the game with 26.1 seconds left in regulation. Tomas Tatar scored in the shootout, and Jimmy Howard stopped all three shots he faced in the tiebreaker to lift Detroit to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. "Thats embarrassing for the league," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "It doesnt matter if we wouldve scored it or they scored it." Kronwall seemed to agree. "It shouldnt have counted," he said. "But at this stage of the game where were at in the standings, well take it." The Red Wings, who lost their two previous games 1-0, are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division and are in a logjam for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Detroit avoided getting shut out in three straight games for the first time in the regular season, and the first time since the 1945 Stanley Cup finals against Toronto. The Kings, especially defenceman Drew Doughty tried to protest Kronwalls goal, but it wasnt reviewable because none of the officials blew a whistle to stop play when the puck hit the net. "They just said they didnt see it," Doughty said. "Its unfortunate. We shouldve got two points. "Ive never seen that before, thats for sure." Los Angeles took a 2-1 lead when Jeff Carter scored off a rebound during a power play with 2:15 left in the third period. Quick and Howard -- two of the three U.S. Olympic goalies -- bumped into each other and had a heated exchange during a stoppage in play midway through the second period. "We were just discussing what we were going to do in Sochi," Howard joked. Howard roughed up Kings forward Kyle Clifford when he slid into the crease. Howard and Mike Richards then shoved each other and were called for roughing. Howard later skated toward his bench during a break, Quick stood in his way to say something, and the two had to be separated. "For him to do that, I thought it was pretty cool," said Doughty, who will play for Canada next month at the Winter Olympics. "I loved it, actually." Howard finished with 30 saves. Quick, who stopped 33 shots, shrugged off the tough-luck loss. "Season ended against Chicago, Game 5, last year," he said. "Thats tougher." Richards broke a scoreless tie at 9:06 of the second, and Henrik Zetterberg tied it 41 seconds later. The Kings went ahead on a power play, but Dwight King was penalized for holding onto the puck with 1:45 left in regulation. That proved to be costly. "They could see the puck when Dwight King covered it with his hand, but they couldnt see it when it went over the barn and came back in," Sutter said. Zetterbergs goal ended a scoreless streak that lasted 152 minutes, 21 seconds and dated to last weeks win against the Kings. The Red Wings started a season-high, five-game homestand, and they hope that is good news. Detroit, which had won only one of its last eight home games, started Saturday with an NHL-low six home victories this season. The Red Wings won for just the second time in nine shootouts. Detroit was without seven skaters who would have been in its lineup if healthy, including Pavel Datsyuk for the sixth straight game because of a lower-body injury. Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said the team has players making "millions and millions," that never seem to play. NOTES: Tatar returned from a one-game absence to attend his fathers funeral and replaced Mikael Samuelsson. ... Kings D Matt Greene was scratched for a second straight game because of an upper-body injury. ... Datsyuk isnt expected to play Monday against St. Louis. ... AMIR JOHNSON: Nice to see him back in the lineup Tuesday night in Washington DC. Played with great energy and purpose. Its amazing when a guy gets those few precious days to recover what it does to the bounce in their step and overall game/confidence.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, In the Montreal-Anaheim shootout on Wednesday night, they went to review on what appeared to be a goal. The Montreal goalies body language was that the puck went in. The shooter appeared to celebrate. They went to video review and the overhead shot (I was watching the Anaheim feed) was repeatedly shown. You could see the puck hit the first post, then there was a delay, and then you could see the puck come off the second post and trickle along the goal line without going across. Not only was the delay curious, but on double-posters, you can usually see (in the overhead shot) the puck shooting across the goal line towards the second post. Nonetheless, in the overhead shot, you could not see the puck in the net, or cross the goal line, at any time. In the Ducks feed, just before the refs announced Torontos decision, the Ducks broadcast showed a lower side angle shot that clearly showed the puck hitting the stanchion in the back of the net before coming back to the right post. This view conclusively showed the puck in the net. What happened? Im guessing Toronto never saw this angle. Even if they didnt see this angle, didnt the overhead replay raise questions and suggest more angles needed to be viewed? Im also wondering what the call was on the ice. If the call was a good goal, I dont think the overhead showed enough to reverse the refs decision. Any insight on what happened would be appreciated. Greg Ward Greg: I watched the Anaheim feed as well and I respectfully disagree with your assertion that a lower side angle shot clearly showed the puck hitting the stanchion in the back of the net before coming back to the right post. In actuality, Kyle Palmieris shot went post to post and the puck travelled along the goal line before Habs goalie Dustin Tokarski swiped the puck away in disgust. Tokarski only assumed that the puck had entered the net once the shot got past him and he heard the sound of double iron. Once he turned and witnessed the puck dancing along the back edge of the goal line his assumption was that at some point it had entered the net. Since the puck must entirely cross the goal line for a legal goal to be credited (rule 78.4), the overhead camera shot provides the best evidence that Palmieris shot did not cross the line. The decision on the ice by one referee (Mike Hassenfratz) was to signal a goal. The other ref (Chris Rooney) did not make a definitive signal and was jumping out of the way of Kyle Palmieri as the Ducks player curled along the goal line toward the corner after making his shot attempt. I will say that neither referee set himself in "picture perfect" position once they gave Palmieri the signal to commence his shot attempt. Both refs were too far from the net and looking along or from behind the goal line/post once the shot was taken. A quick push to the net from just ahead of the goal line would have been the optimum position from which to determine if the puck crossed the line at any point after striking both goal posts. In spite of the fact that referee Hassenfratz felt the puck had crossed the line and signaled a goal, video review has the authority to overrule the refs decision. The referee has one quick look at a play from his exclusive angle. Video review has access to all replays that may be available by reason of any telecasts of the game (rule 38.5). I concur with the decision rendered by the Situation Room personnel to overturn the call on the ice and to disallow Kyle Palmieris apparent goal given the clear evidence presenteed through multiple video replay angles; particularly from the overhead camera shot.dddddddddddd There are times when an inconclusive verdict is rendered following video review and the referees call on the ice will stand. This clearly wasnt one of those times. For those that wish to read on I want to share a story with excerpts from my book, The Final Call, which involved an "inconclusive verdict" from video review after I signaled a goal when I saw the puck completely cross the line after striking the goal post. The incident occurred in Game 1 of the Toronto Maple Leafs 1999 playoff series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pat Quinn was the coach of the Leafs and at that time the video-replay official in the arena was authorized to review goals and make decisions - a responsibility that later shifted to the leagues war room in Toronto. The series supervisor, Charlie Banfield, sat in the video-replay booth. Charlie is a good friend and was an excellent NHL referee before he took early retirement in 1979 to become a firefighter in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the second period, the video-review process (in particular, the placement of the overhead camera) failed both Charlie and me. I can still see the play as clearly as though it just happened. I was in perfect position, a half-step ahead of the goal line on the opposite side to where the players benches were located. At my back was the door where the visiting team exited the ice to get to their dressing room, located right beside ours. From this vantage point, my sightline was never obstructed by the goalpost or the mesh of the netting. The Leafs bench, where Quinn stood, was more than 100 feet away, so it was impossible for Pat to see what I am about to describe. A Penguin fired a rocket and hit the goal post nearest to me. After striking the post, the puck hit the ice flat and slid along the goal line. Less than halfway across the six-foot span between posts, the puck jumped up on its edge and curled along in an upright position. In a split second, I saw white ice between the black of the puck and the red goal line. I thrust my arm forward, pointing like an Irish setter, to signal the goal. The puck then fell back to flat, once again on the line as it continued to curl and exit the other side of the goal area. No goal light came on—nor should have, as the goal judges perspective would have prevented him from determining that the puck had completely, if narrowly, crossed the goal line. I had to blow my whistle to halt play, as I was the only one in the entire building who had seen that a goal had been scored. At least, this is until the next day. After I described the play to Charlie over the phone at the timekeepers bench, and after extensive review of the videotape, the verdict came back: inconclusive. Charlie apologized and said the overhead camera was positioned so that all he could see was the crossbar. He couldnt see the goal line. It was my call to make on the ice, and I ruled the goal would stand. The Mighty Quinn roared loudly that I had cheated his team that night. The next day, footage shot by an ESPN handheld camera that had been positioned in the corner—behind me and over my shoulder—was broadcast on ESPNs SportsCenter, and it revealed clearly that the puck had crossed the line exactly as I said it had. Even so, Pat would have none of it. He claimed the footage had been doctored. Back to present, it was wonderful to catch a camera shot of Pat Quinn being honored by the BC Place crowd during the Stadium Game Series between the Canucks and Senators. Pat is a very good person and a terrific hockey mind; even if we didnt often agree. Have a great weekend everyone. Back in the sport as a works team for the first time since selling a majority stake in the Enstone squad to Genii Capital at the end of 2009, Renault have to deliver on track to justify the huge investment the French manufacturer have made. With the Renault name on the chassis and the engine there can be no hiding place, and while the team are already downplaying expectations, they certainly dont want to be embarrassed on their return. We need to be humble in our expectations for next year, explained Renault Sport boss Cyril Abiteboul. It is at least a team the firm know well. Not only did Renault previously own the team between 2000 and 2009 but they were also engine suppliers between 1995 and 2014 for the team during its various guises as Benetton, Renault and Lotus. That familiarity should accelerate the process of transition in 2016.This integration is not just measured in track performance, its measured by how you optimise the resources available. Its not an exercise in winning at all costs ; its an exercise in winning in a controlled manner, said chief technical officer Bob Bell. Renault felt they didnt get enough recognition for their contribution to Red Bulls dominance of F1 at the turn of the decade. Having had their reputation dragged through the mud over the past two seasons in a public war of words with Red Bull over power unit performance, they could have been forgiven for walking away from the sport. However, the board should be commended for wanting to prove they can compete at the highest level. Asked what the goals were for the season ahead Bell said: Merging the two operations towards becoming one entity, more than they have ever been before. There will undoubtedly be troubles in this year, though, given the lateness of the deal. Lotus ran Mercedes engines in 2015 and were contracted to the German marque for 2016. The car design is likely to be compromised by the late switch of engine to accommodate the Renault unit. But that will be the least of the teams worries if the power unit continues to lag a long way behind Ferrari and Mercedes. The team at the engine base in Viry-Chatillon must make giant strides for Renaults investment to make sense. Quite what impact Mario Illien has - and the deal for Red Bull to run TAG-Heuer branded Renault unit have - remains to be seen. The power unit guys have done a fairly decent job over the winter, Red Bull boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports during testing. I think what we are hopeful of is further down the line into the season when hopefully that power unit develops what it is saying it should do. Then we should be able to start competing with some of the teams ahead of us.In an ideal world for Red Bull they wouldnt have had Renault engines in 2016 due to the units performance and that can only be regarded as an embarrassment for a firm which pushed hard for the new regulations. Big steps are needed this year or there is the very real possibility of the works team receiving a sole supply by default rather than choice.Renaults own form in testing was mixed. While the opening two days of testing were blighted by unreliability, the team finished the eight days of running with over 2200 miles completed. But the RS16 was a regular cause of red flags throughout testing. The loss of Romain Grosjean is a major blow, and the team will head into 2016 with one of the least experienced line-ups on the grid in Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer.Palmer at least knows the team after a season as reserve driver, but as a rookie he cannot be expected to lead the team. That responsibility is likely to fall on the shoulders of Magnussen who has just one season of F1 under his belt and spent 2016 on the sidelines after being dropped by McLaren. And its McLaren who Renault could be battling in 2016 based on pre-season testing. The French firm seem to be quicker than Haas, Sauber and Manor at the rear of the field, but adrift of the Williams, Red Bull, Force India, Toro Rosso fight behind Ferrari and Mercedes. That could leave the team fighting for minor points places on occasion this year with McLaren - hardly ideal for one of only three works teams on the grid. This very much will be transitional year for Renault and expect focus to quickly shift towards their 2017 car as the French firm look to rebuild the Enstone team and return to the glory years of 2005 and 2006.Even if the results are not seen on track, the ground work laid this season could dictate how successful Renaults return to F1 is. 2011 champion Gilles Simon.Missoula,

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers bench didnt provide much in Saturday nights 97-96 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Danny Granger, Luis Scola, C.J. Watson and Ian Mahinmi combined to shoot just 4 of 18 for 16 points. None played more than Watsons 18:33. "Weve got to figure out something to get a better rhythm with that group," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. Maybe the arrival of Andrew Bynum will help. Hours after the Pacers signed the free-agent centre for the rest of the season, Indiana overcame an early deficit and held off the Nets to improve to an NBA-best 22-2 at home. Bynum wasnt in the arena -- Vogel said before the game that the mercurial big man had returned to Cleveland and hadnt had a chance to meet his new teammates yet. But Indianas All-Star starter, Paul George, isnt concerned about Bynums reputation. "I think it increases our chances (of winning a championship)," George said. "A lot of teams have three centres. With us only having two, him being one of the best ones out there, its a no-brainer to go after a talented guy like that." The Pacers (36-10) eked out the win despite a season-high 24 turnovers that Brooklyn converted into 36 points. "We didnt play a great game," Vogel said. "Weve got to get under control." George and Roy Hibbert both had 20 points for the Pacers, who swept the four-game season series. Lance Stephenson, left out of the All-Star game despite leading the NBA in triple-doubles, added 14 points for Indiana. David West had 17 points and George Hill scored 10. "Weve got to be a little more patient. Were swinging for the fences a little too much in terms of trying to make some tight interior passes as opposed to making the simple play," said West, who had a game-high seven assists. Shaun Livingston scored a season-high 24 points for the Nets, who couldnt hold an early seven-point lead against the Eastern Conference leaders. Joe Johnson, an All-Star selection, spent much of the night dueling with Stephenson and scored 16 for Brooklyn, which has lost three straight since starting January with 11 wins in 12 games. "We play 82 games through the season and youre going to have your ups and downs, and hopefully youre ready come playoff time," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. Stephenson, unhappy he was left off the All-Star team, had words at times with the Brooklyn bench. "I could care less if its personal," Johnson said. "He needs to talk it over with the coaches. Ive got nothing to do with it." Paul Pierce scored 15 points, Deron Williams added 13 and Kevin Garnett had 12 for the Nets, who were coming off a 120-95 loss at home to Oklahoma City on Friday night. "The guys were active tonight and we got our hands on some balls and we turned them over," Kidd said. "We didnt capitalize as well as we wanted, but definitely an improvement from what we did the night before." West scored seven points in the fourth quarter, hitting five of six free throws to help the Pacers hold on. "David always comes through when we need him most," George said. "He shines in those moments. He really picks us up in those moments." Brooklyn tied the score at 76 on Livingstons two free throws with 10 minutes left, but Hibbert converted a three-point play and Indiana led the rest of the way. Livingston pulled Brooklyn to 85-83 with 5:10 to play, but after an extended Indiana possession, Stephenson hit two free throws after being fouled by Johnson, then Hibbert slammed home a dunk. The Nets wouldnt go away, though. Hill hit one of two free throws with 18.6 seconds to play for a 94-90 lead before Johnsons 3-pointer with 8 seconds left made it 94-93. West then hit two free throws, rebounded Pierces missed 3 and hit one more free throw to make it 97-93. Williams hit a 3 with 0.4 seconds left, and the game ended after Scola threw the inbounds pass off Pierces back. "The one thing we said was, Dont throw it out of bounds," Vogel said. "We said, Throw it anywhere where it hits them or us." Brooklyn took advantage of a sluggish start by the Pacers to lead by seven points three times in the first quarter, the last on Johnsons short jumper that put the Nets ahead 13-6 with 7:28 to play in the period. The Pacers took their first lead at 19-18 on Georges 3-pointer. Livingston hit two jumpers and Johnson added another to put Brooklyn back ahead 24-19, but Indiana closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 25-24. Neither team could build a lead greater than four points in the second quarter, and the lead changed hands six times, with five ties. Georges driving layup with 6 seconds to play gave the Pacers a 46-45 halftime lead. The Pacers outscored Brooklyn 12-2 over the first 3:36 of the third quarter, building a 58-47 lead and prompting a timeout by Kidd. Brooklyn responded with a 19-9 run to pull to 67-66. Indiana scored the next five points, but Alan Anderson hit a 3-pointer, Mason Plumlee made one of two free throws and the Nets trailed just 72-70 entering the fourth. hit a post in the 50th minute

TORONTO – Watching Brett Cecil pitch, its difficult to imagine that just a little more than a year ago, a group of reporters approached his locker stall in Dunedin to ask if hed cracked the 2013 lineup. Whats happened since - an All-Star appearance and a 2.82 ERA in 60 appearances last season and a perfect run over his first 10 outings (eight-and-two-thirds innings) this season - is special. There was Cecil on Tuesday, called upon by manager John Gibbons in the seventh inning of a 3-3 game with the Blue Jays in a jam, bailing out his team once again. The Orioles had runners on second and third with one out. Cecil walked slugging left-hander Chris Davis before striking out Adam Jones and Steve Clevenger. The clutch performance paved the way to a six-run eighth and Toronto beat the Orioles 9-3, winning the opening game of a fourth-consecutive series. “Just trying to make good pitches,” said Cecil. Cecil is a native of Dunkirk, Maryland. He went to the University of Maryland and served as the Terrapins closer in his sophomore year of 2006, saving 13 games to set a school record. His success as a reliever in college prepared him for the role hes tasked with now. “I knew right off the bat once I moved to the ‘pen that it wouldnt take long,” said Cecil. “Ive done it before and it worked out in the past and it sure has now.” GIBBONS APPROACH TO BULLPEN Entering Tuesdays action, the Blue Jays had received 103 2/3 innings in 19 games from their starting pitchers, an average of between five-and-a-third and five and two-thirds innings per outing. Toronto will need more from its starting five and the sooner the better. After this coming Mondays off day, the Blue Jays will begin a stretch in which they have one day off between April 29 and June 1. Manager John Gibbons tries to balance the short-term and long-term consequences of each decision. “I mean, youve got to think long-term, but youre trying to win that game, too,” said Gibbons. “If theyre fresh you go to them … You want (starters) to go deeper into the game, but if they start to lose it or start to tire out because of the pitches or whatever it is, you look at the lineup or what youre facing, youre trying to hold that game in check.” Youll start to see more of J.A. Happ, Esmil Rogers and Todd Redmond in the fifth and sixth innings in games if the starters dont get deep. The specialists at the back-end of the bullpen cant be the daily option. “If you wear them down too much, those guys arent going to be probably effective later, anyway,” said Gibbons. “Thats why youre going to need some other guys to step up and get some big outs in the sixth, maybe the seventh.” In the last two seasons, 13 of the 20 playoff teams have had staffs that averaged six or more innings per start. The worst, Cleveland, averaged just better than five-and-two-thirds innings per start last season. The Blue Jays, in the early going of 2014, are averaging about an out fewer per start than the Indians of last year. If that doesnt seem like much, prorate that stat over 162 games. Youre asking your bullpen to get 162 more outs over the course of the season. INJURED JANSSEN IN TORONTO Casey Janssen rejoined his teammates in Toronto on Tuesday after his minor-league rehab assignment was halted. The strain in his abdominal/back area, near his oblique, hasnt improved to the point where Janssen is comfortable continuing to appear in games. He threw an inning for Single-A Dunedin a week ago Tuesday, allowing a hit and striking out one. “To be clear, it wasnt a setback,” said Janssen. “We realized it wasnt going to heal doing what I was doing. So instead of putting our foot on the gas, we had to take it off a bit and listen to my body a little bit more.” Janssen played catch before Tuesdays game with the Orioles. The plan is to throw a bullpen session in Toronto later this week and, if hes feeling better, Janssen will go back out on a rehab assignment. “Thats the frustrating part. Im not in pain,” said Janssen. “I mean theres a little bit of annoyance in there and the thing was, as long as you werent in pain, to keep progressing. So I didnt have symptoms of pain, but realizing that the swelling wasnt going to go away and Im in more jeopardy of maybe reinjuring, either that or somewhere else because Im compensating, we added it all up and it didnt make sense.” The Blue Jays bullpen, usually reliable, had two hiccups toward the end of the just-completed road trip through Baltimore, Minnesota and Cleveland. A six-run, eight-walk eighth inning turned a 5-3 lead into a 9-5 deficit in Thursday nights loss to the Twins. On Sunday, three walks and a bases-clearing double in the sixth turned a 4-2 lead into a 5-4 deficit in a loss to the Indians. Janssen is confident his mates will get back on track. “Those guys are still one of the best in the game,” said Janssen. “I dont care what a game or two happened or didnt happen. Basically, these guys are really, really good. Its a strength of our team and it will be a strength of our team.” ROGERS REBUILDING CONFIDENCE Esmil Rogers pitched two scoreless innings to mop up Saturdays shutout win in Cleveland. After a tough start, he needed it. “I know that I can do that more than one time,” said Rogers. “Anytime they need me, Im going to be there. If Im healthy, Im going to be great.” Rogers has allowed a staff-high four home runs on the season in just 10 1/3 innings pitched. Watching balls fly out of the park, he admits, rattled his confidence. “Sometimes you get a little frustrated about that because people can see you and you want to do the best you can,” said Rogers. “I think about it and I dont want it to happen again, but this is baseball. You dont know when youre going to be good and when youre going to be bad.” Maillot Antoine Griezmann France . A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press the Steelers will part ways with the former Pro Bowler, a move that hardly serves as a surprise after fifth-year linebacker Jason Worilds agreed to accept a "transition player" tag last week. Maillot Samuel Umtiti . - Connor McDavid scored twice and added two assists as the Erie Otters beat the Sarnia Sting 7-3 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action. http://www.maillotdefootequipedefrance.f...se-matuidi.html. The 48th-ranked Williams made her first appearance in Dubai since she won her second straight title here in 2010. Shed missed the last three years either because of injury or Sjogrens Syndrome. Maillot Equipe De France Olivier Giroud .C. United have acquired midfielder Alex Caskey from the Seattle Sounders for a third-round pick in the 2016 MLS draft. Maillot Corentin Tolisso . -- Nelson Cruz has only two hits in 15 at-bats against the Kansas City Royals this season. COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Frank Klopas was happy with his players effort Saturday night. The officiating, on the other hand, left the Montreal Impact coach frustrated and angry. Dillon Powers scored on an early penalty kick to give the Colorado Rapids a 1-0 lead, and three goals in the second half helped them cruise to a 4-1 win over Montreal. Klopas expressed his dissatisfaction with referee Chris Penso, who made the call that awarded Colorado the penalty kick, after the game. "We were controlling the game and its unfortunate," Klopas said. "When the referee is a protagonist in the game its never good. So its a shame. He did a very, very poor job. For me, he had a very bad game." Powers, Kamani Hill and Shane ONeill scored in the second half as Colorado (5-4-3) snapped a two-game losing streak. Powers penalty-kick goal came in the fifth minute of the match, on what the Impact considered a borderline call on midfielder Sanna Nyassi. "Whatever the call was they still had a point-blank shot that was saved," midfielder Justin Mapp said. "Looks like a pretty good advantage to me. Not sure what the call is there." For a team that has struggled to find some footing away from home it was a tough night. The Impact (1-6-4) kept it close until the second half, but Colorado scored two goals in a span of five minutes to put it away. Anders Romero scored the lone goal for Montreal, which is now 0-4-2 on the road. "For us, we have to regroup fast," Klopas said. "We have the Canadian final coming up." The Impact had some chances right after Powers penalty kick but couldnt cash in. Mapp got through the defence on the left side and put a shot on Colorado goalie Clint Irwin, who made the save in the eighth minute. Mapp had another chance in the 16th minute but couldnt convert, and he hit a post in the 50th minute with his team down just a goal. He also was takenn down in the box but no call was made, which didnt sit well with the Impact.dddddddddddd "I thought so but I might be a little biased," Mapp said when asked if the takedown should have resulted in a penalty kick. An offside call that negated a goal by Issey Nakajima-Farran in the 66th minute added to the frustration. "I know the game is fast and people make mistakes, but today when we can talk mainly about the decisions of the referee its never good," Klopas said. The Rapids had several chances early but some good defence and key saves kept the Impact close. Deshorn Brown got a step on midfielder Patrice Bernier and then deked goaltender Troy Perkins in the 14th minute, but as Brown got a low shot off, Bernier slid behind Perkins to kick away the shot. "Once he dribbled I saw he didnt really see me coming from behind," Brenier said. "I dove, made a play and kept us at 1-0. Cant give up." Later, Brown leaped over midfielder Wandrille Lefevre but hit the post. Those near misses didnt cost the Rapids, however. Goals by Hill in the 54th minute and ONeill in the 59th gave the Rapids a 3-0 lead. Hills goal, his first since October 2012, came at the top of the box and faded over Perkins outstretch arm. ONeill dropped his shot over Perkins and just under the crossbar to make it 3-0. Powers finished the rout when he spun at the top of the box and sent a low shot past Perkins in the 84th minute for his second of the game. Romero scored his second goal of the season with a strong individual effort. He took the ball from the sideline, dribbled past three defenders and beat Irwin with a shot to the far post in the 88th minute. "It was a great goal. It just seems for us we have to score a goal for the Oscars," Klopas said. "We had some good chances. It is what it is. My players, they gave everything. Theres nothing I can complain about." The intent of reviewing high-sticking

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. -- Lindsey Vonn squeezed in a little freeskiing on Thanksgiving morning, a step in the right direction for a return to racing after reinjuring her right knee in a recent training crash. The reigning Olympic downhill champion posted on her Facebook page Thursday: "First day back on snow since my crash and it was awesome!" She also attached a picture of herself -- grinning -- on an empty slope in Vail. Although shes skipping the races in Beaver Creek this weekend, the 29-year-old Vonn hasnt ruled out a return to competition in Lake Louise, Alberta, next week. Good friend and rival Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany told The Associated Press on Thursday after a downhill training run that the two are planning to travel together to Lake Louise on Monday. "Shes really positive," said Hoefl-Riesch, who spent some time with Vonn earlier in the week. "Im looking forward to seeing her back on skis and finally back racing. "If she feels well and has no pain and no unstable feeling, I think shes strong enough in her head to ski 100 per cent." Vonn had a training mishap in Copper Mountain nine days ago and partially tore a reconstructed ligament in her right knee. At the time on Facebook, she called it a "temporary setback" and that "nothing will keep me from picking myself back up and continuing to fight for my dreams." The Sochi Olympics are in February. Vonn hasnt raced since tearing ligaments in her right knee during a high-speed accident at the world championships in February. She was well ahead of schedule for a World Cup return -- with her first competition scheduled to be this weekend in Beaver Creek -- before her crash at the U.S. speed centre in Copper. Just the news that Vonn was back on skis was greeted as a good sign for teammate Leanne Smith. "Im psyched for her," Smith said. "I just want her to feel comfortable and ready to get back on it. ... I know shes working (hard) and thats all that matters. I hope the progression is easy for her and that her confidence is right back again." In an interview with NBCs "Today" show on Wednesday, Vonn said that her recent crash was caused when she caught an edge, flipped over her skis and "went head-first into the fence." She said the knee wasnt the reason for the spill and that her protective brace saved her from possibly more damage. "Unfortunately, it was really bad timing for me," Vonn said. "Im still confident. I still feel like I have a lot left to achieve this season. ... I still have time before Sochi." In her Facebook post Thursday, Vonn didnt indicate how aggressively she skied or how long she was on the hill. She did thank Vail for opening the lifts early and wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving. "Im very thankful for many things this year (family, loved ones, great fans) but at this moment Im happy to be on the mountain doing what I love -- skiing!!" she posted. Vonn needs just three more wins to match Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proells record of 62 World Cup race victories. Michel Briere Jersey . The 26-year-old Sobotka injured his left leg playing for the St. Louis Blues in a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. The Blues said he would not recover from the injury in time for the Olympic tournament. Custom Pittsburgh Penguins Jerseys . -- Canadian Erik Bedard pitched into the fifth inning in his bid to win a spot in Tampa Bays rotation, helping the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Saturday. http://www.hockeypenguins.com/authentic-...enguins-jersey/. Vonn had another scary moment at Saturdays World Cup downhill in Val dIsere, ending up clutching her knee in pain after losing her balance and missing a gate. But she gave a reassuring answer shortly afterward, saying no new damage had been done to the surgically repaired knee, and that her plans for the Sochi Olympics were still intact. Justin Schultz Jersey . Ramon, 30, played in a career-high 97 games with the Goldeyes in 2013. He also matched a career-high eight home runs and posted 52 RBI. Mario Lemieux Jersey . The 30-year-old Texas native was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Duke spent six years in Pittsburgh and also had stints with Arizona, Washington and Cincinnati.BELLEVILLE, Ont. -- Colin Campbell believes that when it comes to video review, the NHL does it right. In order to keep to that standard, the league has reversed course and will not use video review to look high-sticking penalties this season according to Campbell, the league executive vice-president and director of hockey operations. The competition committee had agreed to review all high-sticking calls for validity, but on Saturday Campbell said concerns about goals scored on delayed penalties led the NHL to cancel that plan for 2013-14. "Were punting right now," Campbell said in an interview with The Canadian Press. "Were going to watch it, were going to talk about it and see how many times it happens. We just dont want to do something that we werent totally comfortable with on video review. We want everything to be clear and precise, and we didnt think that was." Campbell credited New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello for bringing the issues to the leagues attention. Campbell broached the possibility of a delayed penalty late in a game with the goalie pulled leading to a goal, and there was no consensus on what to do in that situation. "Sometimes you just got to be careful, just like with the high stick, that you dont lean on technical support too much when theres other issues youve got to get straight," he said. "The unintended circumstance there, its clear with that one. We never even thought about that." The intent of reviewing high-sticking calls was to make sure that a player was not penalized if it wasnt his stick that struck an opponent in the faace.dddddddddddd Campbell pointed to an incident last season with Shawn Matthias of the Florida Panthers in a game against the Devils as an example of a play that would have been reviewed. Instead, the NHL will wait and see. "We dont want to do something that will cause more problems," Campbell said. Campbell said there hasnt been serious consideration given to reviewing puck-over-the-glass penalties to see if it went off an opponents stick or touched the glass. He supports the rule, which many coaches and defencemen have protested. "Its something that when we changed all the rules after 04-05 we established a thought process. ... Lets reward offence and punish defence," Campbell said. "So when your teams all over my team in the end zone and I find a way to get the puck out, even if its accidental, the glass is six feet -- five or six feet. When I played it was three feet. These guys are good enough -- dont shoot it over." Campbell would like to see offside calls reviewed, but only in the event that a goal is scored on the play in question. "Wed have to put camera work at the blue-lines or at least see more than we see now because I really hate when a goals scored when its offside," he said. "Thats my own personal request. Well probably talk about it at the next meeting." Hybrid icing is being experimented with during the pre-season, with a final decision for the regular season to come after exhibition games. Shallower nets will be used this season, and all players coming into the NHL or with 25 or fewer games of experience must wear visors. MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens Big Three have been reunited in the Bell Centre rafters.Guy Lapointe, a six-time Stanley Cup winner with the spectacular Canadiens team from the 1970s, had his No. 5 jersey retired ahead of a game Saturday night between the Canadiens and the Minnesota Wild. The 66-year-old Lapointe was in tears with his family as well as the other members of the Big Three defence greats from the Canadiens 1970s dynasty, Larry Robinson and Serge Savard, as a banner was raised to the roof in a pre-game ceremony. It was emotional, Lapointe said. I was thinking of my parents and what it would be like if they could be here.It was my father who convinced me to try out for the Canadiens. He said even if you dont make it, its something youll always remember. You can tell your grandchildren you skated with Jean Believeau, Henri Richard, Jacques Laperriere.Hopefully, hes up there somewhere with a big smile and saying Im glad he listened to me, for once. Savard had his No. 18 retired in 2006 and Robinsons No. 19 went up in 2007.The No. 5 had already been taken out of service for Bernard (Boom Boom) Geoffrion, but the Canadiens have three numbers retired in the name of more than one player who wore it. In all, 18 players and 15 numbers have been honoured over the years. The 30-minute ceremony opened with a highlight video of Lapointes career that included tributes from former teammates Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, Bob Gainey, Murray Wilson and Rejean Houle. At a news conference after the ceremony, Houle and team president Geoff Molson presented Lapointe, a noted practical joker, with a jersey with the No. 5 upside down and his nickname Pointu on the back. It was signed by his former teammates, most of whom turned out for the game.Savard said he suggested to the Canadiens to retire all three rearguards jerseys at once, but that the team at the time had other plans. As years passed, Lapointes family began to push for the oversight to be corrected. It was going to happen one day, said Savard. Its like the Hall of Fame, sometimes it takes two or three times before they get in.It doesnt have anything to do with the value of the player. We knew it would happen for Guy one day. That it happened later is not the problem. He is having his day and he deserves it.Robinson and Savard gave short speeches before Lapointe gave an emotional talk about how proud he was to play for the NHLs most storied franchise and to have won six Stanley Cups as well as being part of winning teams at the 1972 Summit Series and the 1976 Canada Cup.He saved a special thank you for Claude Ruel, the former Canadiens coach and player development ace who helped tutor a long list of defence greats. Its the ultimate honour, he said. To know that my grandchildren will be able to come to the Bell Centre and be able to say thats my grandfather up there. Its unimaginable. The current Canadiens, all wearing No. 5 jerseys with Lapointe name on the back, skated out for the banner raising, with P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov bringing out the banner.Thats when Lapointe eyes welled up with tears. He joked about it later, saying: I was scared they were going to hook me up and put me up there. The Wild players applauded from their bench. The date was chosen because Lapointe is Minnesotas co-ordinator of amateur scouting. Minnesota players had presented him with a signed Wild No. 5 jersey earlier. His former teammates love telling Lapointes practical jokes. He once put Vaseline on his hand to skate Prime minister Pierre Trudeaus hand, and once nailed Drydens shoes to the floor. Savard told a story of how coach Scotty Bowman wanted to punish them with an 8 a.m. practice on the road. When their chartered bus didnt show up, Bowman called and was told that someone with a French accent had phoned to cancel the bus.Lapointe was known for pulling jokes, then looking innocent and saying hey, get the right guy.In his 14 seasons with Montreal from 1968 to 1982, Lapointe was one of the NHLs premier puck-moving defencemen, combining speed and sharp passing with a powerful shot. While Robinson was a physical presence and an offensive force, and Savard played with intelligence and skill, Lapointe was dynamic. In 1970-71, he set a team record for goals by a rookie defenceman with 15 and in 1974-75, he set the standard for goals by a Canadiens rearguard with 29. His highest points total was 76 in 1976-77, when he scored 25 times. The Montreal native won four Stanley Cups in a row from 1976 to 1979 on a powerhouse Montreal team that, along with the Big Three, was led by Lafleur, Steve Shutt, Jacques Lemaire, Gainey and goalie Dryden.Lapointe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.He made his NHL debut on Oct. 27, 1968, his only game that season. He played five more the following season before joining the Canadiens for good in 1970.Injuries plagued his final three seasons in Montreal and he was dealt to St. Louis in 1982. In 1983-84, he played one last season with the Boston Bruins before retiring as a player. He later worked as an assistant coach with the Quebec Nordiques and the Calgary Flames and joined Minnesota as amateur scouting director for their expansion season in 1999. Bradley Chubb Broncos Jersey . Kelli Stack and Alex Carpenter also scored for the Americans, who avoided a repeat of Finlands upset at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., in November. Finnish goalie Noora Raty made 58 saves in that one, but the three-time Olympian could stop just 40 of 43 U. Case Keenum Broncos Jersey . - The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned pitchers Kyle Drabek, Chad Jenkins and Sean Nolin to triple-A Buffalo. http://www.broncosrookiestore.com/Bronco...dom-Jersey/.com) - St. Louis Blues right wing Vladimir Tarasenko, Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk and Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury have been selected as the NHLs top players for last week. Isaac Yiadom Jersey .C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes have activated defenceman Joni Pitkanen from injured reserve. Courtland Sutton Broncos Jersey . Rajon Rondo had 18 of Bostons season-high 38 assists and the Celtics committed just seven turnovers in a 118-111 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Now that hes a key part of the Athletics starting rotation, Drew Pomeranz has tried to maintain the same aggressive approach on the mound that he had coming out of the bullpen. Its turned out better than anyone could have hoped for so far. Making his second start of the season after replacing Dan Straily as Oaklands fourth starter, Pomeranz and three relievers combined on a four-hit shut out as the As beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive win. "Thats that mentality, Im kind of just trying to go right after people," Pomeranz said. "Thats what I was doing out of the bullpen and I had success doing that. I dont see any reason to change that." Pomeranz (3-1) went five shutout innings in his first start on May 7 and matched that with another stellar five-inning outing against Chicago. The Athletics left-hander struck out a career-high eight, walked two and gave up just three hits -- all singles. "Thats a tough lineup to navigate through," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He strikes out the first three hitters of the game, sets the tone, and then the offence was terrific across the board." Brandon Moss homered twice and drove in five runs, Josh Reddick also homered while Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and scored twice to anchor a shuffled Oakland lineup that had catcher John Jaso batting leadoff for just the fourth time this season. Jaso had three hits and scored twice. The White Sox lost their fourth straight. "Guys swung through some pitches and (Pomeranz) pounded the strike zone," Chicago manager Robin Venture said. "We got outplayed all the way around. Nothing went right." Oakland improved to 25-15, matching its best record after 40 games since 2003. The As won their second straight over the White Sox in much the same fashion theyve put together the second-best record in the AL -- strong starting pitching and plenty of offence. Pomeranz, who replaced Dan Straily in the As rotation after Straily was optioned to the minors, blanked the White Sox through five innings and allowed only two runners to reach second base.dddddddddddd. He struck out the side twice and fanned leadoff hitter Marcus Semien three times. Dan Otero pitched two innings, Fernando Abad worked the eighth and Joe Savery handled the ninth to complete the four-hitter. That continued a stellar streak by Oakland starting pitchers. Over a six-game stretch that began when Pomeranz helped blank the Seattle Mariners, As starters are 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA. "I think we feed off of each other," Pomeranz said. "You want to keep it going. You dont want to be the guy that doesnt pitch well." The offence has been just as sharp. The As matched their season-high with 17 hits and had at least three home runs for the fourth time this season. Reddick hit a two-run home run as part of the As four-run fifth while Moss had a two-run shot in the sixth and another two-run homer in the eighth. Eight of Oaklands nine starters had at least one hit. Reddick, Moss, Cespedes, Jed Lowrie and Craig Gentry had two apiece. The As jumped on Chicago starter Scott Carroll (1-3) early then held on behind Pomeranz and the bullpen. "(Carroll) was mixing his pitches but when youre throwing a lot of strikes (hitters) can be aggressive with pitches in the zone," Moss said. "Thats what our guys were doing. Those kind of nights are fun four everybody." NOTES: 3B Josh Donaldson was given the day off by Oakland manager Bob Melvin. ... As LHP Eric OFlaherty threw 25 pitches in the latest step on his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Trainers allowed OFlaherty to throw breaking balls for the first time since having the surgery. ... RHP Ryan Cook (forearm strain) is pain-free but has yet to resume throwing. ... Chicago LHP Chris Sale, on the disabled list since April 22 with a left flexor strain, will make his first rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Charlotte. ... RHP Andre Rienzo (3-0) starts the series finale for the White Sox in his first career appearance against the Athletics. LHP Tommy Milone (1-3) goes for Oakland. The 26-year-old Regina native teamed

There are no guarantees in this life, but in a world where everything bigger, newer and shinier gets the most attention, a young man silently plies his trade on fine hardwood courts throughout the heartland of America in hope of realizing a grand dream. This young man was once Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, a four-year player under the radar of many scouts and the average college basketball fan, doing work at tiny Weber State in Utah. Undeterred, despite the presence of other more high visibility draft picks, Lillard went on to earn the 2013 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and is now an All-Star in his second year in the Association. Now the names changed, but the aims the same. Brampton, Ontarios Melvin Ejim, a senior small forward for Iowa State Cyclones, may be next. With all of the hoopla in college basketball going to freshmen, a couple of whom play in his conference (Kansass Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid,) as well as a sophomore who many thought would enter the NBA Draft last year in Marcus Smart, Melvin Ejim is standing out as the leading scorer on one of the best teams in the Big 12. I had the chance to catch up with Ejim earlier this week. Whats the secret to your success? Its just a lot of hard work and dedication. Those guys [Wiggins, Embiid and Smart] are great players and have the big names in our conference. But were competing. Im playing hard and doing the best I can do to help my team win. Why choose Iowa State? They were the first to recruit me. They treated me well. I felt comfortable from the start with them. I wasnt this heavily recruited guy. They told me I had a chance to come in right away and play…make an impact and I did. Iowa State allowed me to grow and help change the culture here. This being my last semester, I dont carry a heavy class load now. I get to spend a lot more time in the gym, working on my game, getting better. Its pretty typical: breakfast, class, gym, study… What has been the biggest change in how people perceive you now vs. your first 3 years? Ive grown a lot. When I first got here, I was kind of rowdy…my game was unrefined…rough. Some people doubted that I could play at this level. Honestly, I questioned it at times, too. I turned the corner in my junior year when I knew not only could I play and be successful at this level, but also started thinking about what I could do to be successful at the next level. How has coach Fred “The Mayor” Hoiberg helped you and the development of your game? Its been great with Coach Fred. Hes been a friend and a mentor, on and off the court. I mean, he was a star here at Iowa State and played 10 years in the NBA, so he knows what it takes to be successful in college and the pros. Ive grown so much watching him here and how he handles things. Coach is so cool, calm and collected. Watching him helped me to shape my on-court demeanor, where Ive been able to control my emotions when necessary and show them at the right times. What team in the NBA do you see as best fit for Melvin Ejim next season? Really, it doesnt matter. To make it to the NBA is a dream…Id be happy! Any team that is willing to take a chance on me, Id be happy to be a part of. Any team that values an all-around player wholl work hard, comes in with a winning attitude from a winning culture may like a player like me. If Melvin Ejim wasnt playing basketball for a living somewhere next year, what would he be doing? Id be in law school. I want to help people…help society. Thats definitely a goal of mine. Congratulations on being the inaugural Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2013, but which would mean more to you: being named NCAA Scholar Athlete of The Year 2014 or being a Naismith Award winner as the best college basketball player in the country? Oh, thats easy. Its a no brainer, really - the Naismith. I knew I wouldnt have any issues with my schooling. That was going to be handled, regardless. While its be great to be an Academic All-American, to be recognized as the best player in college basketball would be a great feeling. It would be a great accomplishment. What helps your draft stock more: dropping the Big 12 scoring record (48 point with 18 rebounds vs. TCU) or winning the Big 12 and eventually a national title, even if you dont play well? Winning is everything to me. Thats my attitude. While hitting 48 definitely got me some recognition in certain places, Id trade that 48 any day to win the conference and win the NCAA title. Winning matters to me. Omar Infante Jersey . If there is one club built to handle an off-field controversy, its the Bill Belichick era Patriots. Even if New Englands offence stumbles a bit out of the gate, their defence can help them stay in games, especially in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets in the first two weeks. Anthony Gose Jersey . It was just business as usual for the Thunder at home. Durant scored 32 points and the Thunder beat the Bulls 107-95 on Thursday night for their eighth straight win. http://www.authenticbaseshoptigers.com/customized/. The 26-year-old Regina native teamed up with Denny Morrison and Mathieu Giroux to win gold in 2010. Makowsky also was 13th in the 5,000 metres and 19th in the 1,500m in Vancouver. He also represented Canada at the 2014 Games in Sochi, helping the pursuit team finish fourth and finishing 28th in the 1,500. Victor Martinez Jersey .ca. The NHL Play of the Year showdown kicks off with some slick moves going head-to-head with a combination of soft hands and endless patience. James McCann Jersey . Or at least on everyone elses expectations. Costa Rica followed up its surprise win over Uruguay with another World Cup stunner on Friday, beating four-time champion Italy 1-0 to secure a spot in the next round and eliminate England in the process. The hilarious look on Evgenis face shows him enjoying the experience much more than a grown man should, but thats just Malkin being Malkin. The Penguins star is known for posting amazing Instagraams, here are a few more of our favourites :Evgeni the party animal.ddddddddddddEvgeni with a clown.Evgeni as Batman.Evgeni and a small penguin statue.Hopefully he keeps it up. ., native will be especially important

CLEVELAND -- Their playoff chase, which somehow lasted longer that it probably should have, is officially over. The Cavaliers came up short. On a night when they finally put it all together, their hopes crumbled. Dion Waiters scored 22 points and the Cavs played one of their best games this season, routing the Detroit Pistons 122-100 on Wednesday before being eliminated from the playoff race. Tyler Zeller scored 18 and rookie Matthew Dellavedova had 14 points and 12 assists for Cleveland, which had its slim playoff hopes ended when Atlanta defeated Boston 105-97. "Its an empty feeling now that your chances are done," said All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who has missed the post-season in each of his three years in the NBA. "You think about things you could have done, you should have done. Its inevitable, especially as big a competitor as I am. Its definitely going to be on my mind. "You always want to compete for something as special as the playoffs, but our chances were snapped tonight. Its disappointing." As the Hawks were rallying to take down the Celtics, the Cavs played with passion and purpose -- two things missing too often earlier this season. Spencer Hawes added 15 points for the Cavs, who led by 32 at half and rolled to one of their best all-around performances in what has been an otherwise disappointing season. Cleveland set a team record with 26 assists in the first half and finished with a season-high 41. But the Cavs will watch the playoffs, and spend the months ahead thinking about games they let slip away, losses that came back to haunt them. "We put ourselves in this hole," said coach Mike Brown, who returned for a second stint with the club after being fired in 2010. "I wish we could have a couple of those games back from early on. I cant fault anybody but ourselves." Brandon Jennings scored 17 after missing his first 10 shots for the Pistons, who played their second game in a row without forward Josh Smith, sidelined with knee tendinitis. Jonas Jerebko added 17 points for Detroit, which was coming off a surprising win in Atlanta. "They outplayed us and outworked us," Pistons interim coach John Loyer said of the Cavs. "We were embarrassed in the first half. This is an unforgiving league, and they didnt care that we beat Atlanta last night." Clevelands unexpected blowout win capped a turbulent few days. Earlier this week, Irving got into a public spat with Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, an embarrassing squabble between two of the citys biggest sports stars. Irving had told Gordon "to mind his own business" about commenting on his supposed rift with Waiters. Following practice on Monday, Irving and Waiters presented a united front and said they worked through any differences and were only focused on winning. Maybe the backcourt mates patching up their differences rubbed off on the rest of the Cavs, as Brown spent most of the game sitting as opposed to standing and yelling. The Cavs had 14 assists on 14 field goals in the first quarter, which ended with them up 31-18. They were nearly as efficient in the second quarter, outscoring the Pistons 38-19 on the way to a 69-37 halftime lead. "This is the way we want to play most of the time," said Brown, who tied Bill Fitch for the second-most wins in franchise history. "It felt pretty good." Following the game, Atlantas game was on the locker room TV as Irving waited to speak with reporters. The season didnt go as planned, but theres nothing more he can do. "As a man and as a competitor, youve got to suck it up," he said. "This is my third year. Obviously, things didnt go in a perfect way. But theres no perfect season. For me, its just about continuing to grow and finish the season strong." NOTES: Brown and Fitch have 304 wins, 12 behind Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens. ... Irving is "proud" of friend and former high school teammate Derrick Gordon for coming "out" as the first openly gay player in Division I. "Hes a strong person. I think the way he did it is a true test of his character and its big time," Irving said. "Im happy for him." Irving said he would not have any issue with a gay teammate. "To see guys in sports coming out now is part of life," he said. "Im not a judgmental guy, not one bit. But Im proud of Derrick and Im proud of Jason Collins. Its a big step for everybody and every generation." ... Detroit has come to Cleveland with a different coach in each of its past three visits: Lawrence Frank last year, Maurice Cheeks earlier this season and now Loyer. Roquan Smith Jersey . Omar Rahou made the discriminatory gesture several times while celebrating scoring a goal against Romania at Antwerp in January, UEFA said. Aaron Lynch Jersey .com) - Mike Miller scored a season-high 21 points in a rare start and the Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from their worst loss of the season with a 95-91 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Cody Parkey Jersey . The 25-year-old native of Milford, Conn., has 18 points in 41 games this season. MELBOURNE, Australia -- John Isner fired 23 aces in a match which had no service breaks to beat Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) in the final of the ATPs Heineken Open in Auckland on Saturday. Isner, ranked No. 14, won his eighth career singles title and took the title in New Zealand for the second time after his victory in 2010. The match was similar to Isners quarterfinal victory over fifth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber which went to three sets, all tiebreaks and contained no breaks of serve. Isner played six tiebreaks in 10 sets at the tournament and won five. The third-seeded Isner, playing with a right ankle injury he picked up at the Hopman Cup the previous week, took a crucial minibreak to open the first set tiebreaker. In the second tiebreaker, he rallied from 3-0 down and closed with an ace on his third championship point. "This match was very tight as every match Ive played this week was very tight," Isner said. "I needed every bit of it to come out on top. "Ive spent a lot of time on this court this week but as each match progressed I was getting more and more comfortable." Isner heads into the Australian Open with a question mark hanging over his fitness because of his injured ankle. He has drawn a qualifier in the first round. "Id like to thank my chiropractor because I had a bit of a banged-up ankle coming in here and he spent tireless hours working on me," he said. "Without him I wouldnt have been able to take this court." In the final of the Kooyong Classic exhibition event, Japans Kei Nishikori joined his coach Michael Chang as a tournament champion with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Tomas Berdych. Nishikori, seeded No. 16 at the Australian Open, was watched in the stands by former French Open champion Chang, a three-time winner at the Melbourne venue in 1995-97. Nishikori is drawn to face Australias Marinko Matosevic in the first round of the Australian Open. "It wont be an easy first match, and its not easy to play an Australian," Nishikori said. "But if I can play like I did today, I have a big chance to win." In the WTA event at Hobart, Spanish qualifier Garbine Muguruza defeated Klara Zakapalova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-0 to claim her first singles title. The 20-year-old Muguzura, who did not drop a set from the qualifiers to the final, joins 2012 champion Mona Barthel as the only qualifiers to win the Hobart event. Muguruza, ranked 58th, beat second-seeded and Wimbledon semifinalist Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals, while Zakapalova defeated top-seeded and former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur in the semis. Muguruza won the opening set when she broke Zakapalovas service in the 10th game. The 20-year-old Muguruza didnt play after Wimbledon last year after due to right ankle surgery, and the recovery took longer than expected. "I started to play on a chair, and then it was a little bit more until I was like normal," she said. "I didnt expect to win a lot of matches in the second tournament of the year but I just know that Id worked so hard before. I was like a big bull." The Venezuelan-born Muguruza has a first-round match against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia at the Australian Open. Samuel Umtiti Jersey . But this time, the Gunners weathered the storm. Head coach Michel Therrien announced earlier in the day that Price will miss the remainder of series with an injury suffered in the opening game. Listen to the action live on TSN Radio 690 and TSN.ca/Montreal at 8pm et/5pm pt. Also, TSN.ca will provide live streaming of the post-game news conferences. Alex Galchenyuk will make his first appearance of the playoffs and will draw into the lineup in place of Michael Bournival. Galchenyuk has been out since April 10 with a lower-body injury. Daniel Carcillo will play for the Rangers in place of Derick Brassard. Brassard was hurt Saturday in the first period after taking a hard hit from Montreal defenseman Mike Weaver. Brassard only played two shifts for 35 seconds of ice time before leaving the game for good. Fourth-line center Dominic Moore was pressed into an increased role following the injury. The Canadiens hope to regroup after a humiliating defeat in the opener of the Eastern Conference final. The Rangers, who were down 3-1 to Pittsburgh in the conference semifinals before rallying for the series win, posted their fourth straight victory Saturday with a 7-2 trouncing of the Habs. This is the 15th all-time playoff series between these Original Six foes, but Saturdays rout marked New Yorks largest margin of victory against Montreal in a postseason game. The seven goals also set a playoff record for the Rangers against the Habs, who had allowed six goals to New York twice before in the playoffs (Game 4, 1972 quarterfinals; Game 4, 1974 quarterfinals). With the lopsided road victory, New York also became the first team to score at least seven goals in Game 1 of a conference final since Chicago posted an 8-2 win over Edmonton in the 1992 Campbell Conference series. Ryan McDonagh led New Yorks scoring blitz with a goal and three assists, with Mats Zuccarello tallying once and adding two helpers to help make Henrik Lundqvists first win in Montreal since 2009 a rather effortless one. Even the previously slumping Rick Nash got into the act for the Rangers, potting his first goal of these playoffs while also contributing an assist. Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and Martin St. Louis finished with a goal and an assist as well. Lundqvist, 0-3-1 with a 4.63 goals against average in his last four starts at Bell Centre, needed to make just 20 saves to end his recent struggles at the venue.dddddddddddd "I havent won too many games in this building, so its good to get a great start," said Lundqvist afterward. "They have a lot of speed, but our defenders blocked key shots. We played a smart game." Carey Prices afternoon wasnt as effective, as Montreals standout goaltender was pulled after two periods after saving only 16-of-20 attempts. The Rangers then scored three times on eight chances against backup Peter Budaj in the third. Lars Eller had a goal and an assist in the loss, the Canadiens most lopsided one since an 8-2 setback to Carolina in Game 6 of the 2002 East semifinals. Rene Bourque also scored for a Montreal squad that will attempt to bounce back Monday before the series shifts to New York for Games 3 and 4. Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday at Madison Square Garden. "Well put that game behind us now and move forward, but thats a good lesson," Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien remarked. "We werent ready for this game," said a frustrated Therrien. "There were offensive errors and some defensive errors as well. "We were not sharp. We werent ready mentally or physically to compete in this game, and thats the result that you saw." The Rangers improved to 8-2-0 in these playoffs when scoring first, while Montreal is 1-4-0 when allowing the initial goal. In other news for New York, the entire Rangers team spent Sundays off day attending the funeral of St. Louis mother, France, who died of a heart attack on May 8. "It was good for us to be there for him, so today was a lot less about hockey and a lot more about being there for (Marty) and his family," said Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. This best-of-seven series is the first postseason encounter between these Original Six rivals since the opening round of the 1996 playoffs when New York won in six games. The clubs have played 14 playoff series and each club has won seven times, although Montreal earned the biggest victory when it beat the Rangers in the 1979 Cup Finals. Both teams are attempting to get back to the Cup Final for the first time since the 1990s. Montreal was the last team based in Canada to win it all in 1993, but has yet to return to the Cup Final, and the Rangers are aiming to get back to the final stage for the first time since winning their last championship in 1994. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Though his physical condition is no longer a big question mark for Peyton Manning, when he looks around at training camp, he must feel like hes starting over again. Manning lined up for his first snaps Thursday behind an offensive line that has been shuffled, in front of a running back who took only about 25 per cent of the snaps last year and looking down the line at some pass catchers, who 12 months ago, were either bit players or playing somewhere else. The quarterback who thrived on the familiarity of playing with the same receivers -- Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison -- same tight end -- Dallas Clark -- and same running backs -- either Edgerrin James or Joseph Addai -- year after year in Indianapolis, is now having to adjust to a revamped offensive roster to start his third year in Denver. Bottom line: "Just because you did certain things last year means nothing as far as this upcoming season," Manning said. "Ive always felt the NFL does not owe you anything." But even by an NFL rosters constantly shuffling standards, the Broncos did some major reorganizing around their franchise quarterback -- the 43-8 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl exposing too many problems for the AFC champions to stand pat. The line will be different with the return of Ryan Clady at left tackle and the shifting of Orlando Franklin, who had a poor Super Bowl, from right tackle to left guard. Montee Ball will replace Knowshon Moreno at running back. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Sanders replaces Eric Decker at receiver. And just to accentuate the feel Thursday, former No. 5 receiver Andre Caldwell was getting reps in place of Demaryius Thomas, who was excused to attend his grandmothers funeral. "Were certainly looking for continuity and chemistry with the new players," Manning said. "Every year you have to establish that particular teams identity. Were in the process of doing that right now." John Elway, who put this roster together, said he hopes part of the new identity will take some of the focus off Manning, much the same way he became less of a focal point in his final years, which produced his two Super Bowl wins. "I think that weve got to get to be where were a complete football team," Elway said. "We cant rely on 18 to win it because he cant win it by himself." While Elway was talking more about his off-season revamp of the defence, he has also been making plenty of moves to shore up the parts around Manning, who set records for yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55) last season and also won his fifth Most Valuable Player Award. Ball, last years second-round pick, is viewed as a long-term prospect at running back. The Broncos spent this years second-round pick on receiver Cody Latimer, in the hopes hell be catching passes from Manning and his successor for years to come. In practice Thursday, Manning looked often toward tight end Julius Thomas, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound pass catcher with whom the Broncos are hoping to sign a long-term contract extension. "An important part of the team this year," Manning called him. And a familiar one -- something Manning almost certainly didnt think hed be searching for this hard come Year 3 with the Broncos. "Thats probably the worst thing about football, is when you lose great players from the previous year, who are also great guys," Manning said. "Well certainly miss guys like Eric and Knowshon -- guys youve played in a lot of big games with, guys you put a lot of sweat and work in with in this facility and this weight room. "But its an opportunity for other guys to step up." Brian Boyle Jersey . They were still teenagers. It was the second round of the 1999 Australian Open, and Venus won in two sets. "I totally remember," Venus Williams said Friday at the US$2.44 million Rogers Cup. "We had a tough match back then. "Thats the trend that started and it hasnt changed. I suspect this will be another tough match." The 34-year-old Venus and the 32-year-old Serena have their 26th career meeting in the semifinals of the hardcourt event at Uniprix Stadium on Saturday. Serena, ranked first in the world, is 15-10 against her 26th-ranked sister, although one was a walkover when her sister withdrew. She has won the last five head-to-head matches. "I have to play well," added Venus Williams, whose last win over Serena was at Dubai in 2009. "Theres no secret or science to it. "I think anyone who has got any wins against her, theyve pretty much played the match of their life. Granted, Id like to imagine that I wont have to play the match of my life. Thats tough to do. But I know I need to play well." Both rallied from one-set deficits to win their quarter-final matches. Serena Williams defeated Denmarks Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 while Venus Williams dispatched 14th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. "I definitely dont like playing her," Serena Williams said of her sister. "I think Ive lost to her more than anyone on the tour, so its definitely not a fun match. "Shes tough. She has a great serve. She runs every ball down. She has a great backhand. She hits winners off the forehand. She does everything well so its not an ideal matchup for anyone, to be honest." In another quarter-final, Ekaterina Makarova ended the Cinderella run of American qualifier Coco Vanderweghe with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory. Vanderweghe had knocked off two former world No. 1s en route to the quarter-finals. Makarova will play the winner of a later quarter-final between Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska. The sisters will meet for the first time since Serena Williams cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win on clay at Charleston, S.C., in 2003. Between them, the Williams sisters have won 24 grand slam tournaments, with Serena taking 17 and Venus seven. They have also been credited with introducing more of a power game to womens tennis, and of inspiring players from minority communities to take up the sport. "Weve had such a great impact," saiid Serena Williams.dddddddddddd"I think having been pretty much one of the first African-Americans to do well, then to see all the African-Americans, even some Canadians here playing really well, it makes me feel really good. "Im really excited to see that. We just had an opportunity to do something really special. Sometimes I get chill bumps when I think about it because were just so normal and so down-to-earth. We just feel like we want to help everyone to do the best that they can." Serena Williams, the defending champion, extended her Rogers Cup win streak to 14 matches after victories at the 2011 and 2013 events in Toronto. She skipped the 2012 tournament. Wozniacki, coming off a win at Istanbul, ended an eight-match streak. The match that lasted two hours 41 minutes saw Wozniacki take control in the first set and build a 2-0 lead in the second before Williams started hitting the lines. "I was making a lot of unforced errors in general," said Williams. "But I just thought: Just keep fighting. Hopefully I can just hold on and hold on, try to break, keep going for each shot. " She broke service for a 3-2 first-set lead and fought off two break points to close the set. The third set featured five service breaks, the last giving Williams the win on her third match point. Williams is now 7-1 all-time against Wozniacki. Williams won at Stanford last week and has won seven straight matches. But she knew beating Wozniacki wouldnt be easy. "Especially when you play someone like Caroline or other opponents, you know your match might be a little longer than normal," said Williams. "You go in there thinking: This is not going to be routine. Youre ready." Wozniacki was happy with her tournament despite the defeat. "It was really small things that did it out there today," she said. "She came up with quite a few big serves when she needed to. "It could have gone both ways. I had a break in the second set. Didnt manage to hold on. But I gave it everything I had. It just wasnt quite enough." Venus also needed time to find a rhythm against 14th-seeded Suarez Navarro. She has gone three sets in three of her four matches, including her third-round upset of sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber. "Whats happening well for me is just competing," said Venus Williams. "I think my movement has been very helpful to me, as well, covering a lot of court. "Ive been playing some stellar opponents, so it hasnt been easy." NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez dropped a lawsuit accusing a New York Yankees team doctor of botching his treatment for a hip injury, ending what had been a lingering piece of the sluggers legal fight over his baseball career, his lawyer said Friday. Rodriguez withdrew his suit against Dr. Christopher Ahmad "for the sole purpose of having no legal distractions" as the third baseman anticipates returning to play after the season-long suspension hes serving this year, attorney Alan S. Ripka said. "He wants to focus on being the best baseball player he can be, the best Yankee he can be, and wants nothing to distract him from those goals," the attorney said. Ahmads lawyer, Peter T. Crean, said the orthopedic surgeon was very pleased with the development, which he described as "demonstrating that Dr. Ahmads care was complete and appropriate." Ripka insisted that dropping the case wasnt a reflection on its merits. "Its about eliminating more things to think about and deal with instead of whats the most important thing to (Rodriguez), which is playing baseball for the Yankees," the lawyer said. Rodriguez abandoned the medical malpractice case four months after withdrawing two lawsuits against Major League Baseball over its investigation into whether he used banned, performance-enhancing drugs. He has denied it, but he agreed to accept the longest performance-booster-related suspension in baseball history. While he was fighting the suspension last fall, the 38-year-old Rodriguez filed his medical malpractice suit. It said he had kept playing and worsened a left hip injury in October 2012 because Ahmad didnt tell him an MRI had showed a joint tear. Rodriguez ultimately had surgery for the injury in January 2013, and his recuperation kept him from rejoining the Yankees until August. The now-withdrawn suit also named New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where the MRI was done. The hospital "never thought that the case had any merit" and was pleased to see it dropped, said its lawyer, Neil F. Brenes. The case was still in early stages, and arguments hadnt delved into the medical issues. But in a sign of the sensitivity surrounding them, Rodriguezs lawyer had asked a judge to make sure that any potential video of Rodriguez answering pretrial questions wouldnt be publicly disseminated, had the case gotten to that point. The suit didnt name the Yankees, and team representatives didnt immediately respond to email inquiries Friday evening about the development, first reported by the Daily News. Mike Conley hit a driving layup against Austin Rivers with 1.5 seconds remaining to complete Memphis 9-0 run over the final 3:22 and the Grizzlies escaped with a 90-88 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. Conley initially drove to his right, and then split the lane before pulling up just short of the goal for his game-winning basket.. The Pelicans were out of timeouts and Rivers missed a long desperation shot as time expired. "Its very sweet," said Conley, who scored 16 points in leading the Grizzlies to their fourth consecutive win. "We knew who they had on the floor. They were going to switch the pick-and-roll. I ended up splitting it and having a lane." The undermanned Pelicans, playing without guards Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon, missed five shots and committed one turnover during the final 3:22. "Its tough," Rivers said. "We felt like we had the game won. We should have known better. They are a veteran team." Anthony Morrow missed a 3-point attempt with 14.3 seconds remaining, setting up the Grizzlies for the winning shot. "It felt great," Morrow said of his missed shot. "I was open, just a little bit off." Marc Gasol added 15 points, and Zach Randolph and Tony Allen 13 each for Memphis. Anthony Davis scored 29 points, including 22 in the first half, for the Pelicans, who had won their past three games. Rivers scored 14 points, Brian Roberts 12 and Morrow 10 for New Orleans. Davis, who turned 21 Tuesday, added 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. "The last few minutes we could not get anything," Davis said.dddddddddddd"We couldnt run a play. We had a couple of bad shots, turned the ball over." After taking a 57-48 halftime lead, the Pelicans were held to 31 points in the second half, equaling their second-quarter output. New Orleans, which scored 14 points in the final quarter, finished with 17 turnovers and 16 assists. "We just couldnt score," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. "We couldnt get into an offence. We kind of went away from the things that weve been doing, pushing the ball down the floor off stops." Memphis juggled its defence against Davis in the second half, using Tayshaun Prince, then James Johnson. The ploy worked as Davis, who was 8 of 11 in the first half, finished 9 of 14. "I thought that was effective but it was an effort thing," Memphis coach David Joerger said. "We didnt play hard enough or with enough energy in the first half. Then, in the second half, we picked up more energy. We went small a little bit just to kind of junk up the game." Davis was dominant in the first half, scoring 22 points. He displayed his full arsenal, scoring underneath or stepping out and hitting the open jumper. Randolph led the Grizzlies with 12 points and four rebounds in the half. He was 5 of 7, taking advantage of his matchup against the Pelicans Alexis Ajinca. NOTES: The Pelicans made all of 22 of their free throw attempts, the first time they were perfect from the line since March 18, 2013, against Golden State. It was the second most free throws made while staying perfect in franchise history. Few critics had given France any

MOBILE, Ala. -- Arkansas State was down to an interim coach, a backup quarterback and less than a minute remaining in the game. None of it fazed the Red Wolves, who are used to a little bit of post-season adversity. Allen Muse caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Fredi Knighten with 32 seconds remaining to lift Arkansas State past Ball State 23-20 at the GoDaddy Bowl on Sunday night. Ball State had a chance to tie at the end of regulation, but Scott Secors 38-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Ryan Carrethers as time expired. For a second straight season, Arkansas State shrugged off a coaching change to win the GoDaddy Bowl. Arkansas State lost coach Bryan Harsin to Boise State in December. Hes the latest in a string of three ASU coaches, including Hugh Freeze (Mississippi) and Gus Malzahn (Auburn), who have left the program for a more high-profile job. John Thompson was the teams interim coach for a second straight season, and the veteran defensive co-ordinator led a staff that managed to cobble together a workable offence with Knighten, who replaced injured starter Adam Kennedy in the second quarter. Thompson was not retained by new coach Blake Anderson -- the former North Carolina offensive co-ordinator who is Arkansas States fifth head coach in five seasons -- but is confident he left the program in good hands. Despite all the coaching changes, Arkansas State has won 28 games over the past three seasons, turning into one of the Sun Belt Conferences best programs. "Arkansas State is not just that little football team up there in northeast Arkansas," Thompson said. "Arkansas State should now have a national brand. I dont think there were many other football games going on tonight. There are a lot of good things about (this win)." Knighten rescued Arkansas States offence on Sunday after Kennedy left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury, finishing with 115 yards passing and 97 yards rushing. Muse, who considered quitting football following his fathers suicide three years ago, wound up with the biggest catch of the night just five plays after Ball State scored what appeared to be the decisive touchdown. "Im extremely blessed," Muse said. "Its really hard to put into words what this means." Ball State (10-3) went ahead 20-16 with 1:33 remaining on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jahwan Edwards, but couldnt hold the lead. Edwards finished with a game-high 146 yards rushing, but had to watch as Arkansas State rallied for the win. "Its not over until the times over," Edwards said. "Its hard to swallow." Keith Wenning capped his Ball State career with 215 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception. Hes the first Ball State quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season. Arkansas State moved the ball well throughout the third quarter, but had to settle for two short field goals to take a 16-10 lead. It nearly came back to haunt them. But Knightens clutch throw to Muse proved to be the difference. Ball State still had a chance to tie. The Cardinals drove downfield -- and with the help of a 15-yard personal foul penalty on Arkansas States Andrew Tryon for a late hit -- lined up for the 38-yard field goal with 2 seconds left. But it never got past the line of scrimmage, smacking off Carrethers hands and setting off an Arkansas State celebration that quickly spilled onto the field. "It was crazy," Carrethers said. "Ive never experienced anything like that. To put everything on the line and then come through like that -- it was an amazing feeling. I couldnt have written it any better." Ball States normally prolific passing offence struggled early in the game. Wenning missed on four of his first five pass attempts -- and also took a vicious hit on a sack by Rocky Hayes. "When we pressured him, our guys brought some steam," Thompson said. "Just hitting him. (Quarterbacks) dont like to get hit." Edwards rushed for 92 yards in the first half, including 44 yards on a 14-play drive that ended with Wennings 9-yard touchdown pass to Willie Snead. It helped Ball State push out to a 10-3 lead by late in the second quarter, but Arkansas State responded with its own long drive just before halftime, capped by Sirgregory Thorntons 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10. Wenning, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, holds just about every passing record in Ball State history, but struggled in his finale. He completed 23 of 44 passes. "The seniors and the rest of the team -- thats who Im hurting for right now," Wenning said. The top-seeded Wawrinka earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory and will take on Slovenian qualifier Aljaz Bedene on Sunday for the championship. Bedene, ranked 156th in the world, continued his surprising run with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) win over third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut in the first semifinal. Bedene saved four match points to reach his first-ever ATP World Tour final. He was a semifinalist at this event two years ago, when he knocked off Wawrinka in the quarterfinals before falling to Janko Tipsarevic in the next round.dddddddddddd Bautista Agut was the 2013 Chennai runner-up to Tipsarevic and last year captured his first two ATP World Tour titles. Bedene has a tough task ahead of him on Sunday, as Wawrinka will try for his eighth career title and third at this season-opening event. The Swiss star used this tournament victory last year as a stepping stone to his first major title a few weeks later at the Australian Open. He also won the Chennai crown in 2011 and was the runner-up in 2010. Chennai serves as a tune-up for the Aussie Open, which will begin Jan. 19.
